Review Gama Cafe - Edmonton

Yellow Parsley
Beautiful and relaxing place. I've been here a couple times, and I like this place more and more each time. Service is great 10/10. Food is also 10/10. I would recommend to anyone. The owner of this cafe is super nice.

Thr place is lovely, reviews are pisitive and the photos are amazing. So my friends and I arranged to meet there and we became compeletely disappointed. Here you can check the photos of our orders. The idea of serving jasmine tea in jug and those designs are ......!!!!! Also the owner (i think he was the owner, maybe he wasnt) was talking to the waiter badly and infront of us!👎🏻 We wont be back

Gama cafe has been a favorite for years. The whole family has always made us feel welcome since it first visit in their original location. There are now a few places that offer green cap but this is still the best! They have a whole menu of other great drinks and food. Try the winter melon or the black cap, very refreshing.

Amazing, tender and delicious. Jasmine Peach Tea (cold) is beautiful and refreshing. Mango waffle is a dream. Perfect temperature, pleasant music, and wonderful service completes this marvelous experience. All senses happy. Will be back and will bring friends.

Was hungry for breakfast (at 3:30pm, on a Wednesday haha) so did a quick search of "waffles near Whyte Ave" and was surprised when this popped up because I'd walked past it a million times and never even seen it! So, gave it a shot and my friend and I popped in. Only customers in, and the man was very friendly and approachable. I asked what "Tommi Toast" was and he explained and that's what I ordered - it was delicious. Cute little café, I hate to think I've never seen it before ! Will definitely come back.

Great spot to hang out. The food is awesome I love their pastas, drinks, waffles and pancakes plus the price are perfect and worth it. Check this place out, the staff here’s friendly too.

Went to hang out with some friends and went here for the first time. Service was a little slow because there's only one person, but friendly enough. He was very helpful in explaining what some of the menu items were (the Golden Pancake is salted egg btw.) Kinda hoped for more variety in their sweets menu. Chose a red bean pancake that came in 2 and shaped like medallions and it was a tiny bit sweet but not sweet enough to really satisfy my sweet tooth. Decorations and seating are pretty nice and definitely selfie/insta-worthy

The cafe itself is beautiful with lovely details and fixtures... but it doesn't make up for the lack of service. As with the other reviews, the service is pretty off. I've been here a couple times, the first time a lovely girl handed us menus, served us our food with no problem. But the second time we had to grab the menus ourselves and order at the front. The desserts are beautiful, but it is pricey. So be prepared to pay up on the higher end for the waffles and toast. The fresh fruit tea is refreshing and nice, but it's small and the content is filled with ice and fruit so you don't actually get a lot of tea. With all the other cafes and dessert places open nearby, I'm not sure if I'll be heading back here anytime soon.

I went to Gama cafe with my friend yesterday, and we had the WORST service, when we entered, the guy asked us to grab the meun and sit down, and when we are ready, we HAD to go up and order, then he asked us to pay right after we ordered. which is OK. when the food was ready, he RANG THE BELL and we had to go up and get the food, and he expected us to clean up after ourselves. It was the worst service my friend and I ever experienced, does he think this is fast food? my friend and i will never going back to that place again.

I've been to gama a few times in the past two years. The interior is very unique, reminds me of a maid cafe haha. I feel that the prices are much too steep for the product given. Their waffles are alright, but not worth the price. Everything is super pretty though and the owner is really nice. When my friends and I went recently, it was only the owner working on a Saturday afternoon. So we had to order and pickup the food ourselves. I had the fruit tea which was surprisingly decent. It wasn't too sweet at all and it was very cute. The size was much smaller than what I had anticipated though.

My friend and I sat down at this cafe for 20 minutes and no one came by to place our order. We used to go to the old location back when it was run by an elderly husband and wife and the pancake and milk tea were delicious. I'm sure the food would taste good if I ever got a chance to order. After 25 minutes of seeing if anyone would come offer us service, no one came and so we left.

Edmonton lacks little cafes and restaurants orientated towards long, late night chats with friends. Gama Cafe is one of the few places that you can with intimate seating and delicious desserts. So far, I've only ever come here for the desserts although I am aware of the other main course menu items. The staff are cute and very friendly. My only complaint is that even though the seats look plushy, they're actually not that comfortable. Lol. Well worth a stop!!!

It use to be good, I use to come here all the time. Now the quality of food, drink and service has degraded much. The drink I order normally was winter melon with grass jelly. They tried to pass off this canned, whole jelly grass in my drink, to me thinking I wouldnt notice. They forgot to put in two enter orders and service too forever. We use to come here often. Now don't bother.

I ordered the Squash Risotto and it was delicious. There was mushrooms, green beans, and baby corn cooked with a creamy cheese and squash sauce. It was seasoned well enough and had a strong parmesan cheese flavour. I had a couple bites of the Strawberry Hill and it was also tasty. Not too sweet of a dessert to finish off my risotto. 1/1

Service was good. There was only one waiter and he was running all over the place which took him a while to get to us. However, not a major concern. 0.5/1

Decor was unique in itself. It had a maid theme for the lack of a better word... 0.5/1

Price was fair. 1/1

I would come back if I have a chance but definitely trying out other cafes first. 0.5/1

This is one of my favourite cafes in Edmonton. I love the clean, classy, and elegant interior design. I usually come here in the day where the overall ambiance is relaxed and quiet. Great place for hot and cold drinks. I really love their Potted Green Tea Cap (hot). It's definitely a must-try here! Their basil pesto dish is so delicious and one of my favourite dishes here. Did I also mention their desserts?? Their Melting Gold custard cakes and Strawberry Castles are to die for!

I only come here for the green tea cap and the pancakes. Have not tried anything else. It would really help if the staff were more knowledgeable about the menu items. (ie. Is there dairy in specific items.) One of them did not recommend a certain drink to be served hot; so why put it on the menu then?

Gama Cafe is a Taiwanese dessert house that's located right on Whyte. They used to have another location a few blocks east, and then moved to 108 street. It's a little bit tough to spot unless you know what you're looking for. The interior is brightly lit with nice and comfy booths. They are open a little bit on the later side and is a nice little spot to take someone after dinner, or if you're just looking for some late night sweets.
Ah
We came early afternoon, and it was really only us and another table. The one and only server was the usual cute old mandarin man dressed in black pants and a white dress shirt. - playing the part as a "maid" cafe. He did small talk as best he could in English but was definitely much more comfortable with mandarin.

We ordered a winter melon salt cap and a rose salt cap, along with 2 orders of custard pancakes. ---maybe it was me reminiscing on the taste from before they moved. But the pancakes weren't as delicious as they once were. And the winter melon which has been one of my favorites was waaaaay too sweet.

The high-ish rating is solely on the entertainment and how friendly the server was.
Tbh you'd probably get better prices and snacks at a bbt shop.

This is my new favourite restaurant. Fantastic atmosphere, wonderful ambiance, and incredible food. The Fruit party waffles are my favourite. very artistic, relatively healthy, and the plates, as do all the plates in this restaurant, look like a piece of artwork. I have been to this restaurant about 8 times in the last month and the only criticism I have is that the service is a little suspect. Some of the waitresses speak very little english which has caused a few problems with getting the right order. Also, I am not sure they even give you a bill after your meal. Every time I have been there I never received a bill even after waiting quite a while. They seem to expect you to just come to the front and pay when you are ready to leave. Overall a really cool restaurant.

My fiance and I were walking around whyte ave and were mesmerized by the delicious looking desserts shown on a giant tv at a window. So of course, we had to go in to check it out. The cafe is beautifully decorated with chandeliers and red velvet sofas. The server in the cute apron uniform was very helpful and we ordered milk cap teas and strawberry castle tommi toast. The food was good, but not "wow". The price was ok. We definitely liked the atmosphere more than the food. Overall, the cafe is good and I would recommend it.

Still tasty green cap tea aka buttery foam topped slightly sweetened green tea, tasty stuffed pancakes and delish new towers of toast topped with whipped cream and other yummies at new location. Full review of other drinks and desserts on website

Gama Cafe is one of the only places in Edmonton that offers trendy Taiwanese snacks and drinks. I really miss this type of cutesy and semi-pretentious decor that is common among Taiwanese style cafes in Vancouver. The owner is very talkative if you speak Mandarin, and he kept convincing my friend and I to check in on Facebook for a free gift. The gift turned out to be a small scoop of ice cream.

Been here a couple of times atmosphere is good, they brought out a newer menu haven't tried the food yet but the new dessert toasts are wonderful probably best in Edmonton so far ! :)

I like the new decore of the cafe. It has the vag maid/butler cafe free, which I like. It has the same owner, which is good. The staff are uniformly dressed in white shirt and black pants. I like that the menu is mostly the same, but with some new stuff. I like the old location, the miss matched furniture, gamer freindly atmosphere, and the merchandise area. Miss the merchandise. But glad that the store still exists in one form or another.

It felt like I walked into an anime scene when I entered this cafe. It was a nice touch of French and Goth mixed with maid outfits. I was half-expecting girls greeting me at the entrance but glad that didn't happen.
The tea was delicious and the portion was generous, and the waffles were amazing! It was nice and fluffy with a touch of ice cream, which was nice.
Although I wouldn't say the service is the greatest. I went with a friend who speaks Mandarin and the whole time they wouldn't even talk to me even when I addressed them directly, multiple times. They would prefer talking to my friend.
I understand the language barrier issue (I at one point too, had to learn English) but this I find quite unacceptable.
Would I go back? Probably not.

A very unique food spot. The interior of this cafe has a fusion of asian, french and goth look to it. Definitely something I have never seen before. Personally, I think it works! I tried the Green Tea Milk Cap. I would definitely recommended this! Again, very unique yet very good! I also tried the Taiwanese Pancakes and Porcini Risotto. The pancakes, not bad. I like the one with ham & corn as well as the one with cheese, but don't like the red bean version. The risotto, a mixed bag. The flavour is there but the consistency sucks. Overall, it was a good unique experience. Would definitely come back.

Their milk cap tea is my fave:) but avoid any food in this place if possible..doesn't worth the $$ Worst food I've ever tried!! Love the old gama much better

First thought, it's a very interesting cafe. Different in a good way compared to others. They have cushy sofas you can sit back and relax. It also made me feel like I'm in more of a restaurant than a cafe. The food and drinks are above expectations. I would definitely see myself going again.

You walk in and you're surround by bright interior, red velvet chairs, and chandeliers as if you just stepped in a cafe from an anime (if that's what they're going for, they've got it spot on). The place looks spotless, it's cute though. You're greeted by the worker(s) and they seat you. The hostess was attentive to any/all of our needs and refilled our waters quite often.

Though I did feel like my small party of 3 was disrupting this oh so quiet cafe, getting looks from the hostess. You almost feel like you have to whisper in order to not disturb the atmosphere the cafe gives off. Would be a great place to go for a date or on your own, not so much in a larger group.

My first visit here I ordered the Tiramisu (cold) and custard Taiwanese pancakes. Both came out in a decent time, no long excessive wait. My drink was delicious, just the perfect amount of caffeine in it and a great size. Something I will be ordering again. The taiwanese pancakes were small and came in a pair. They were delicious and came out hot, really enjoyable. Just the right amount of custard filling to the ratio of the pancake. They're quite small at a bit smaller than the diameter of an average mug but really thick.

Aside from the weird vibe walking into Gama, I did enjoy my drink and pancakes. The menu looks very promising with a lot of options offered. I will be coming back to try some of their other stuff and I definitely recommend it.

Cute cafe to catch up with friends or to take a date. Drinks are great but the food is overpriced for what you get. The toast is literally bread with a scoop of ice cream and some syrup for $15. Come here for the drinks but not the food.

Gama Café recently moved a few streets west of its original location on Whyte Ave and is now housed in bright, fancy new digs. Fancy! Comfy booths, plushy cushions, this is definitely a cute place to bring a date for after-meal drinks and desserts. No signage on the outside. Love places that do that. Makes it feel like only you know about it. Or at the very least, a pleasant surprise when you stumble upon it. Menu consists of two pages. Coffee, tea, waffles, Taiwanese pancakes, toast and a few hot dishes to round things off.

A cute Taiwanese cafe. Gama Cafe recently moved to it's new location a few streets down on Whyte Ave by the Oodle Noodle and Pizza Hut, and if it wasn't for my friend who had been there before I would have missed it since I didn't see a sign! A group of friends and I went there on a Wednesday afternoon, and entering I noticed that their decor had been significantly overhauled for the better compared to it's previous location! There are new couches and chairs, and it seems a lot more welcoming and modern than it's previous location. Since we had made a reservation, we had an area of the cafe sectioned off for us, providing us with some privacy which was nice. However, they decided that because we had reserved as a group, that it was appropriate to charge us 15% gratuity like a restaurant even though the entire cafe was empty! And this happened after we had sat down and were ready to start ordering, so we weren't that impressed by that. However we decided to stay and got our drinks and food. I had their cold Wintermelon Cap, and shared their Chocolate Waffles and Strawberry Castle (Bread with Ice Cream and Berries on it). I loved their Wintermelon Cap, it reminded me of my vacation last year to Taiwan as it was extremely refreshing and just sweet enough. Their Chocolate Waffles were average, nothing special. Their Strawberry Castle was delicious, and we wanted another one later but they forgot our order (granted it was such a huge group, but still) so we gave up on it. I also saw a centipede in their washroom while I was using it, though otherwise it was clean. Overall, there were definitely a few negatives like charging 15% gratuity when the place was empty, finding a centipede crawling across the floor in the washroom, and forgetting our order. However, overall I still enjoyed my experience here and wouldn't hesitate recommending this place for it's tea and Strawberry Castle to others. Recommended.

They still serve their well-known signature cap tea but added on some new features to the menu. Waffles, Taiwanese pancakes, and different variations of toast can be ordered for dessert. If you're feeling like having a full meal there, there's risotto and pasta. The prices are a bit overpriced though for the portions and the food itself.

Arriving here at 10pm there is only one waiter. She seated us. Asked us if we were ready to order. As we were still looking at the menu, we asked for a couple more minutes. Turned out they were so under staffed the waiter thought it was better to ignore us then to tell us she is swamped as we tried to flag her down for ten minutes. The Manager from the other location arrived and greeted us right away. I commend her for trying. The other waiter only treated mandarin speakers with any respect. So now. How do I tip the Manager that tried and waiter that was a fail. As we got our food ordered and served. The other tables automatically get water and water refilled. Where is our? Summary. Food and drinks are good. Manager is good. Your waiter is killing your business

So disappointed!. I started with a rose salt cap milk tea. That wasn't bad. Interesting mildly salty flavour in the tea. Then I ordered a sticky cheese thick toast. Sadly, this was when I was grossly disappointed with my grotesque serving of cheese whiz on Texas thick bread. It didn't look appetizing and didn't taste appetizing. It certainly wasn't worth the $7. I also ordered a Strawberriffle Waffle. The waffle was filling albeit was plain, but the horrible custard served with it was amateur at best. Master Chef Junior could have done far better. At least they would have known to use cream when making custard. Not a return experience in my future.

Bring back the custard pancakes!. We miss them!

Thumbs Up. It's apparent even from the first sip that Gama uses good quality tea. Yum. Definitely my favorite spot for some quick and delicious cold traditional milk tea.

Yum. Come here if u like milk tea best in city custard pancakes are must try

The shop owner is very kind and welcoming. Great food but it's not a place to go if you have time constraints. Atmosphere of the cafe could improve but the food and drink make up for it.
YumYum
Hidden yumyum. Hidden. Well priced. Delicious. Enough said.

Green cap milk tea!. I love the green cap milk teas here! I want to try the other flavors but I just can't because every time I go, I order the same thing. I love the salty cheese foam combination with the sweet tea. The little cakes are great too - fresh made to order at a very decent price. I think that this store is the only place in the city with the concept of the salty cheese foam, so it's quite unique.

Update on June 18, 2016:

Great tasting porcini risotto and oyster mushroom pasta. Very flavorful. The pasta was al dente and had a fusion feel to it. Very authentic Taiwanese cafe as always and it has stood the test of time. Excellent service. I didn't like my Taiwanese milk tea and the server kindly let me order the mountain cap which tasted way better. The pricing is on the high side yes but the quality comes with it as well. I kinda got used to the decor now and now it doesn't feel as creepy LOL...(helps to come during day time). Anyways check this place out! A good alternative to other Taiwanese bbt places like purple and Taiwan bubble zone

This new 108st/Whyte Ave location is very creepy, quiet, and it's nothing like you've experienced before.. From red couches to chandeliers to the two servers that look 100% identical but are not twins nor sisters... I just don't know what happened to this place. It's not a casual bubble tea place anymore. This is a fully sit-down, don't take out, eat some pasta & risotto for $15 a drop place. I am not even sure if you can take out if you wanted to try.

I went on a Friday evening and it was so quiet I thought I was in a furniture shop past 9 PM. There was just no one around seemingly. What adds to the creepiness is the red couches... which I chose to sit... The decor, the people working far, far away in the kitchen, and the two servers just made me feel very estranged. I am 1000% sure they are all lovely people but everything just added up together to creepiness.

I enjoyed my potted plant drink very much so I do not doubt their competency with making drinks. I also suspect that the food would be very good and I'd come back to try. But otherwise, I felt like I was in a Breakout game or some kind of murder mystery dinner thing. It is so quiet it adds on top to any awkward silence you might have. Also, you'll be sure that you can hear the other tables...

Just come here and tell me I'm not crazy!

-----29 Jun, 2012-----

I don't even know where to start... I adore this place.. I felt like I was in a store-library-bubble-tea type place that is nicely tucked away from the wildness of whyte ave. It's a place where you want to go and reflect on life a little. The service was excellent and the girls there were just down to earth. I think they are just so young that they haven't learned to be grumpy and disgruntled - that's a plus.

The teas and custard cakes were very good there. I've always wanted to try Taiwanese food and wondered if a restaurant would ever open in Edmonton. Well, look no further, even if it's just a $5 snack-ish dry noodle, I was very happy already. This is a pretty cool place to be to get a tiny tiny glimpse into what Taiwan would be like. Check it out! (Stop going to Dream Tea that's so 1999!)
Jessica Happy Liu
Well, just like normal.. If I want some bubble tea, I will choose dream house. If I want green tea, I will go to starbucks. I won't pay more than $5 for a cup of green tea. Only those red bean cakes are good and price is reasonable fare. but those clothes, like a little dress, quality is not good, for over $100??? OMG I'd better go to Arizia.
Yum-ilicious
This place is great. You actually feel as though you ate getting a totally new experience and legit Taiwan style teas and desserts. The gentleman running everything is so friendly and happy to explain everything. This was fun. Would recommend to anyone wanting a mid-day snack or anyone looking for a out-of-the-ordinary experience.

If you have been to Taiwan~you will find yourself identify with this place :). When my fiance and I 1st walked into the store. (I believe that was the owner's mom?) greeted us with a very warm and welcoming attitude. Then she introduced us to uncle Paul (her husband). The renovation, food, drinks and their hospitality remind me of my Taiwan trip last year.
You can see the sincerity of Taiwanese in Gama store.

I guess people grow up locally might take a little while to get use to their tea since the tea they offer is authentic Taiwan style. Lighter, refresh and creamy.

I'd say this is what we need in Edmonton and a place for you to go if you want to taste real Taiwanese tea and snacks.
Their red bean cake is another thumbs up item. It's freshly make when you order. (I personally like cheese and red bean flavor the most.)

To me~their tea isn't over priced at all..$5 in terms of the size you get. (It's literally in a bucket and it's big.) What more can you expect?? compare to whatever tea in large size you get in other independent or franchise cafe, this is relatively a pretty good deal.

One thing I like about the Taiwanese couple is they know how to do business and are not stingy with customers. Reputation and quality is everything and this store has both. :)

Love this place! The sweets are delicious! Sesame toast was really good to. Love to look at the clothing and accessories here while I'm waiting for the food. Owner is really friendly and super nice. Check this place out people! Don't miss out!

Overpriced..blehh... My girlfriend and I decided to stop by this tucked away "cafe", I paid $5 for a very sweet, average tea (I had the green cap milk tea, overpriced). My friend had the black tea ice cream (also $5), she said it was only okay...the service wasn't that awesome either. Next time I think I'll just walk across the way to starbucks/second cup.. tastes the same anyways and plus costs less. I wouldn't really recommend this place
Liz Ellie
Alright...nothing special!!. A little pricey for tea in a bucket. The concept is cool with a clothing store upfront and tea being sold in the back but definitely nothing special...the tea is okay but when you are paying $5 for a drink it should at least have some sago bubbles or something. Probably will not go back!
Giovanna Spadaro
Had to actually share this with others!. First review because it was so awesome I had to sign up and gush. The owner is a blast to talk to and very generous and enthusiastic about his product; we bought drinks and when we asked about the cakes, he made us one for free! The drinks, of course, are amazing, the salty foam is delicious with the sweet milk teas, and the cakes made from scratch to order are filled with a variety of things. Do yourself a favor and try the melting gold. AMAZING. A total gem.

Had the green tea with the foam on top. Soo good!!!! An the cake with some yolk inside. Heavenly ~

it took me a long time to get over the thought of salted cheese foam on green tea. And I'm glad I did... cuz it actually tastes great - just like salt works with caramel. Plus great little cakes!
