Review Back Home Fish And Chips - Edmonton

Haddock is my favorite fish to eat, so it was nice to see. Cod is overrated. Iced tea was made, not canned, which was good. Service was prompt and friendly. I'd recommend the burger as well. My girlfriend got it and she adored it. It's decently priced, but a little high on certain products. Despite the name, it's a great place to go for things other than fish. My girlfriend hates even the smell of fish but she enjoyed herself greatly.

Good fish and batter. The fries with the Newfie gravy was tasteless however.

Fish was decent. Fries weren’t fully cooked and there was no gravy or coleslaw available because they were busy the night before. How have they not made more by 2:30 the next afternoon after a busy night? Our waitress was awesome though.

A great stop for your fish and chips fix. It's a family run business, that is family friendly. It is accessible and offers suitable seating. The staff are friendly and serve as fast as they can. A good beer or a nice glass of lemonade goes nicely with the meal.

Barely deserves 1 star.... if this is what they think easy coast food is they are WAY WAY OFF! The fish is super dry and coated in a bland thin batter with no fluffiness. The fries are barely warm and super chewy and again flavourless. Highly suggest going anywhere else, even McDonald’s has better fish and fries!

The food was good. I wouldn't say amazing but I only ordered a blt & fries w/ gravy, which was good. The service was good as well. I wouldn't say amazing but the lady who served me was kind and attentive. The bathroom desperately needs renovations!! As does the whole restaurant itself!! Its old and looks like its been this way for as long as Ive been alive or... older!!!!! The location is good. I like that is has wheelchair access!! Always a plus for ppl who need! The restaurant gets a 2 out of 5 stars. I would have given 1 out of 5 but the lady who served me was very nice and I always appreciate good customer service!

Went to this restaurant last year, it was amazing, home made fries, and huge fluffy fish...WHAT HAPPENED?? Tonight we ordered takeout. Was talked into getting the Family Deal . 10 pieces of fish, fries and gravy........10 pieces were actually only 9 . fries were not home made or even made fresh (soggy and old) and the gravy came from a can or package...Extremely disappointed.. $56.00 wasted.. Not worth the one star I reluctantly gave..:(

After craving fish and chips and a quick google search, my Dad and I found ourselves leaving this establishment extremely satisfied. From the batter of the fish, to the cut of the fries. I definitely recommend the seafood chowder. The only reason this was 4 and not 5 stars was the tarter sauce, which left me searching for the 'tart'.

Not the best fish and chips in Edmo but its a good stop on the "tour de trout" I've been on as of late. the price is about right and the prep is on point, the batter is just the right texture, and cooked juuuuuuust right. the big drawback was the ingredients. As far as fish goes you only have the one option of haddock. that's it. You take haddock or you pound salt. Haddock is generally just the worst in terms of texture, and I would have gladly peeled off a few extra bucks for cod or really anything else. that wasn't the only ingredient faux pas in my books though: squeeze bottle lemon juice. That's a serious issue in my opinion. The tangy bright accompaniment of a FRESH wedge of lemon is an indispensable component to a classic fish and chips, and there is no acceptable reason to substitute that with the bottled variety. They don't taste nearly the same and to cut corners on such a simple, lynch-pin component is just asinine. Seriously, I don't mean to harp, but what the hell? was cutting up a lemon too much of a bother? that really soured my experience (pun intended.)
It could be a much MUCH better place than it is with some very simple alterations. Stock at least one other fish and cut up some flippin lemons and this place would be an easy 4.0, or at least a 3.5. But I don't know, as it stands now I think I'll go elsewhere for my fishies

Really enjoy the fish and chips here. Instead of ordering an individual order you order the amount of fish for how many people there are. They have fries that come with homemade stuffing and gravy, you have to try it. Don't order to go, eat in. Fish will get soggy if you order to go.

Not the best but not the worst. Good to fulfill your fish and chip cravings. Interior is old and dated but maybe its because they were going for the UK look.

Went here with a few friends for dinner. Nice quite place, wasn't packed with many people and we were seated right away. We all knew what we wanted...Fish & Chips of course. Our order came out in an appropriate time. Not sure if they used fresh fish, but it tasted alright. I thought the batter was a bit on the greasy side. The fries didn't taste as fresh or hand cut, maybe it was frozen store bought fries. Overll, it was just okay for me. Would I be back, probably not.

Service is diabolical. Took 45 minutes to get the meal, and it was not very busy. Fish is good. Nice light crust. No choice of fish though, Haddock only. Very strange as other fish and chip places in town offer a variety. The chips were horrible. Soggy, droopy and lukewarm. No lemon wedges, but the plastic lemon shaped lemon juice thingy. Horrendous tartar sauce. I can still taste it!!! Make your own - takes 5 minutes! Will make your meal special! Restaurant is creepy, and toilets soooooooo bad. Never again!!

Pretty good place for Fish and Chips (Newfoundland-style, not British-style, just to be clear).
The service was friendly, the fish (it's haddock, I was expecting cod, but who cares?) fresh, the fries OK and they had the best coleslaw I've ever tasted.
Sure, it's greasy and such, but what's not to like?

Be Patient, Be Compassionate. I and my neighbours have been repeat customers here for many years!! And we have enjoyed bringing friends
and relatives here......having NOT HAD any bad experiences as yet, we will continue to go here and find others
interested in experiencing this place.
THERE IS NO, I REPEAT NO, PERFECT RESTAURANT!!!......as nobody can always please all the time!!!
THAT'S LIFE!!!

When the place is packed busy.....Be Patient....;
When one person that is no longer a young kid, is the only server
and the place is packed, and with Government taxes and the cost of hiring waitresses is higher then the headache
involved in keeping their attention on work instead of their iphone.....Be Compassionate...;
The only reason they stay in business and keep going.....is NOT because they are making money!!....but because
of you-me-my friends and others like us! They love the product they know and serve!, they love sharing it with us
for a small return for their efforts!, and they love to see the joy and pleasure on your faces of appreciation to their
tastes!

Can't wait to go back!. This was my first time here. I had the fish bites and chips. The fish and homemade chips were were delicious! I can't wait to go back and try some other items on the menu.
Lisa Hynes
I love the food but the only reason I come here is for the dressing and gravy and half the time there out off it.

This has to be the worst place in Edmonton for fish and chips. Even the fish will stay away from this place. My hunch is the the service is better in a prison camp. It took an hour to get a bowl of soup. The kitchen is extremely disorganized and dysfunctional. Staff are clearly not working as a team. If you want a night out and a desire to experience the worst in service... Come dine here

Will not go back. Worst. Service. Ever. Went in on lunch break at 12 and they waited half an hour to tell me they couldn't do part of my order then another 20 minutes later put my new order through! Usually I'm not picky but this was AWFUL!
PrairieGal
Not good. It's too greasy and the fries are limp. I see no reason to return.
Tedonna
Starved newfie girl. I haven't been there in over a year, went a few time last month and there's a sign saying closed. I just heard they re-opened and I am going this weekend because I absolutely love their food. We have never had a bad experience...Stay tuned
April
Bad service! They made us wait 1 hour and a half for a table for my family. When we finally got seats they selected my family and 2 hours for our food to be served it was horrible
:(
Karlkesper9
Not Good Value. Went there the evening of April 16, 2014 upon hearing that it had just recently re-opened. It was closed at the start of the new year. I was a regular customer before, but not now. The prices have jumped considerably, and the portion sizes for both the fish and chips have diminished considerably. I don't know what they are thinking. I will not be back.

Best fish and chips in town. My family has been a frequient customer of back home fish & chips on 104th &124 street and it is by far the best to the homemade coleslaw to the pies and best of all homemade chips. i would recommend it to nayone. The service is friendly and the price is tight.
Mary

Never Going Back. Had been a customer of their's back to when the had a location on 170th street many years ago. I cannot fault the staff but the owner doesn't care any more. Went there three times last year and the gave up. Had it out with the owner the last time we took my parents there as it took 2 hours to get our meals (two family catches)
They lost their best cook (Bob) and the owner miss treats his staff so after 17 years (not kidding) of putting bread on the owners table will never go back.
Used to be the best fish & chip joint west of Halifax - surprised the place is still open.

Mm mmm good!. Great fish and chips! Add a little lemon to your coleslaw to make it perfect! Also ask for malt vinegar if thats the only way you roll! Great place dont go for service or a dining experience go for fish and chips! 5 out of 5 and deffintly best F&C's in town! Kicks ass over Brits!
Ben
Best fish and chippies in town. Went into this place not expecting much. Well, fish and chippies were excellent!
I am from coastal fishing village in england (does this make me a fish and chip expert?) and can appeciate all kinds of fish and chips - this one was certainly the best I have had in the edmonton area.
Full of friendly newfies - if that is not an endorsement i dont know what is!
Scaredsky
Sub-par. It's fried fish. There are chips. The service is indifferent. That's about all I can say.

I've never been to Newfoundland, but I've been to England. I had thought there couldn't be too much of a difference between fish and chips no matter where you went in the world, but based on some of the reviews here, it seems like maybe this is how Newfoundlanders like their food. Which is a pity, if true.

There's an authentic British-style fish and chips shop a few blocks down from this one. Do yourself a favour and get the good stuff.

ATROCIOUS. The absolute, bar none, worst restaurant experience of my life. we waited a few minutes for a table, were brought beverages, and the ignored for an hour and a half. when i inquired as to the whereabouts of our dinner i was met with hostility and rudeness. in the meantime table after table of people came in, ate, and left. when i pointed this out, i was again rudely put off. in all, we were at that horrible place for about 2.5 hours. my kids were late getting to bed and the rest of the evening ruined. oh and the food? very soggy fries and super greasy fish. and my husbands dinner didn't even include all the items listed on the menu. save your time and frustration, go elsewhere!!!!

DISGUSTING!!. Being from Newfoundland. My husband and I decided we'd give this place a try last night Jan 29th, 2012.

It is in no way a "Newfie" Fish and Chips place, nor is it a British joint either.

It makes a reference to "Newfie dressing and gravy" on the menu, which they were out out but I doubt it was any great loss.

Frozen fries are not "Chips". And canned corn and canned gravy are nothing to be desired. Chips are fresh potatoes cut into long wedge shape and deep fried. Home we call them "home fries".

My hubby had to add white vinegar (as they don't even serve malt) artificial lemon juice, not even a real wedge of lemon and tarter sauce to his fish to get it down.

I myself had cod tongues which were deep friend (big no no). The batter was under cooked I couldn't even eat them. The texture when biting into them was greasy, and you know when your ill and you cough up flem. Well biting into these were like biting into a greasy battered flem covered piece of fish. And even tho it was only $18 for a pound of cod tongues. It was not wort it.

We will not be returning to this place. And unfortunately I will be advising others not to try this place either.

It was great. went during lunch. Home style fries, tartar sauce and coleslaw.

Take out at Back Home Fish & Chips. I found Back Home Fish & Chips very disappointing. Phoned to find out what time they closed on Saturday night and was told by a server that I better hurry up and order because they were closing at 8:30. Raced down at 7:45 because I don't live very far. When I got down there at 7:55 I read on the door they closed at 9:30. They had 4 tables with customers at them. I picked up two orders of fish and chips which were already up, paid and left. When I opened them at home they had been packed so tightly they were just a clump of dried up fish and soggy chips. I phoned back to ask her what time they closed and again she told me 8:30. I then asked her what time the sign on the door said they closed. She said she didn't know. I said you work there but you don't know what the sign says on your door? She didn't answer. I had been there before about 5 years earlier and had been very pleased with the food and the service. What a shame it has not done well since.

Sorely disappointing! A place with a specialty of fish and chips should have the absolute best in their field! But the fish was only ok, the fries were soggy, the gravy was fake, and the condiments were terrible! The "home made" tartar sauce tasted like I unwittingly poured a jar of mayo on my fish, and I was not even provided with real lemon wedges, but fake lemon juice. All in all, not worth the trip, or the price. I think I could get better from a street vendor.
Jessica Winton
Didn't like the fish and chips at all. Found them extremely greasy.
Janine Abbott
Fish was execellent, fried perfectly. Fries weren't quite "home fries" but still good.
Canitcook
This definitely does not taste like back home! Greasy, grimy, go, go somewhere else! Soggy, thick, heavy.... I could not have been more disappointed.
Get In My Belly
Always the best tasting fish and chips in town. Has a great mom and pop feel to it. Make sure you try the newfie dressing with your fries.
Eurica
Definitely the place. I go to this restaurant regularly with my friends. Their fish and chips are the best in town. I tried a fish burger which was not the best, so I would stay away from that. Just stick to fish and chips.

I have been here a couple of times! The fish is to battery! The fries are not crisp! However they have good fried shrimp! You people need to take lessons from Brits Fish and Chips!

The Best!. This is now my favorite fish & chips place in Edmonton! Large tasty portions, friendly staff, underground parking.
Will be back

Over-Fried Fish. I've now tried Back Home twice and both times I have left thinking that the meal could have been better. The food is not bad but the pieces of fish are small and because they are small, when fried they tend to be overcooked. Which give you a piece of marginally crispy, chewy, dry pieces of fish. Which overall gave me a mediocre experience.

On the up side the resturant has very promt friendly wait staff. I haven't tried anything else on the menu but for a place with "Fish & Chips" in the name I expeced better.

Aberta Fish n chips. Light and Crispy batter. Alberta's the only place I have seen this sold on fish. But I have never been to Nfld and they have Nflders working their that give this the authentic approval. This type of fish n chips are by far the most prevalent in Edmonton and people seem to like it. But as a Maritimer I am pretty tradition, cod and (yes) heavy batter thank you. Although I miss fried clams more this is a second for sure on things I eat when home. Now this kind of batter works well on many other seafood just not fish. So I guess to me Edson would have to be home in the "back home" to like this type of fish and chips
JonJonPoPong
Not my kind of fish and chips. I decided to drop in for dinner one evening and after trying to find a place to park ended up having to go inside and be told that parking is underground. They have a sign pointing in a direction (opposite the underground parking) that says they have parking but it doesn't say that the parking is in the underground facility.
The place was fairly full so I figured the food must be good, and it was okay, its more of a thin batter and the fish was just bland and tasteless. Also they have French fries that are really bad, not chips. Though oddly enough the picture on their menu showed chips, not fries.
I guess this is more of a newfie back home fish and French fries place not a back home British. I would prefer the Red Robins fish and chips over this.
