Always delicious! My favourite is the sizzling coconut curry dish! My go to for sure! The staff are all very friendly and polite! Highly Recommended! A neighbourhood gem for sure!
The only problem I have with this place is that when I eat here I always order the same thing (pork with the wok fried eggs and mango salad) because it's fantastic but I want to try everything else too! So many good choices!
With a name like Brooklyn Tomato, one of the last things you'd expect that they sell is Viet food! A friend and I went on a Monday evening after a recommendation from a fellow south sider. It's located in the corner near Tasty Choice and Coco's, regardless of what Google Maps says (it put me on Calgary Trail on the opposite side of the strip mall). My friend decided to make a reservation so we wouldn't have to wait, but when we got to the restaurant it was EMPTY. Like we were the only ones in the restaurant. Awkwarddd. Pretty cool though, our own table in an empty restaurant.
We asked for his recommendation and my friend got their pork chop while I got their six coloured don with tons of food in it (chicken, beef, shrimp, pork, etc). My friend also got Coconut rice with it. The coconut rice was decent. The fragrance was there, but it definitely wasn't the strongest that I've ever had which left me expecting more. My don...had a lot of food. I didn't notice too much vermicelli that came with it, but geez I swear more than half of it was food. Which is a great thing. I couldn't finish it and got it to go. Food was good, no complaints there. Solid but nothing special.
Service started out well, but towards the end it significantly deteriorated to being neglected entirely. We had to ask the guy to come over and help us with stuff which isn't a big deal but we were waiting for a while for him to come. Food was a bit on the pricier side ($16 for that don) but regardless with the quantity given it was fair. It's not a bad place to go, but I feel it's missing something to be outstanding, and I don't know what that is. I also hope that the service thing doesn't happen on a regular basis. All in all, recommended.
We ordered delivery from Brooklyn Tomato recently using Skip The Dishes. The food was very good but the delivery left a lot to be desired. In particular, the estimated delivery time was 36-56 minutes (already not great) but took at least 75 minutes. I don't think it was the fault of the delivery person who delivered the food because it seems he was added to the delivery after the previous delivery person dropped out.
The food we ordered was very good, despite the delay. Dishes were appropriately spiced based on our preferences. I just wish the delivery had been better.
Spring rolls were really fresh and good, the pho was a bit whitewashed broth wise not much complexity. No options to add brisket flank or tripe to the soups just basic things large menu of alternative options however. Clean restaurant and bathrooms, good service as well.
Great food and friendly service. The restraint was nice and clean and fairly busy during the afternoon. The food was super fresh and the price was good. Portions were pretty big for the price.
The pho we got here was very tasty, with standard portion sizes, apart from that I have to confess that I had eaten here before at their previous location and LOVED it. I, however, have yet to try their vermicelli, although I cant wait to!
Here's an inside scoop- a "friend" of mine knows the health inspector that checked this place out and it has one of the cleanest kitchens in the city. ****
Came here strictly for the Sate soup. The cost was $12.00 which is a little high in comparison to other restaurants, but it was very good. I thought the broth could a have been a little thicker for my liking. I’ve seen larger bowls also. But like I said, it was very good.
If I’m in the area, I will come back to try other dishes on the menu.
Service was quick and friendly, food was delicious, decor is clean and modern, lots of parking, and the menu had a great variety. They offered varied levels of hotness with the lemongrass chicken dishes, which was nice for one of our group who can't handle hot spices. The vermicelli bowl was gigantic! After trying several apps (chicken salad rolls, fried shrimp, and green onion cake), I ended up taking home most of of my bowl. Good value, that's for sure. Everyone enjoyed their meals, and I would come back again.
I had the tom yum with chicken, and I was not disappointed. It was a huge bowl, so I couldn't finish it all. It has more chicken and veggies than I have ever seen in a tom yum. The flavors were wonderful! It's a lovely restaurant, very clean, and service is excellent. You should consider trying this place. I'll certainly be back. Parking: 5/5. Service: 5/5. Presentation: 4/5. Ambience: 4/5. Portion Size: 5/5 Flavors: 5/5. Value: 5/5.
First things first. The calamari was a rip-off given the portion size and it didn't taste particularly unique for a Vietnamese calamari dish. I was hoping for more spices and garlic and seasoning.
Onto the good stuff - this place was quiet when I went so the service was heads over heels excellent. The prices are decent and if you are sick of Pho Hoan Pasteur in Millwoods or Tien Tuyen or Hung Phat this is a good alternative. I actually quite liked this place but nothing is screaming at me for me to go back ASAP. It felt pretty standard. You can't go wrong with it but it doesn't excite you by going there either.
What excites me... however... is the competition next door called Pho Langs. Legend has it that Pho Langs had a contract with the strip mall that it is the sole Vietnamese restaurant permissible on the strip. However, someone obviously messed up and let "Brooklyn Tomato", a non-Vietnamese sounding restaurant, to open. HA! Urban Legend for you so take it for what it's worth. The decor at Pho Langs is much better and modern in feel. I feel like Brooklyn Tomato just cheaped out just like its previous location in Bonnie Doon and called it a day. Or it's the fact that I HATED Nellos and this place replaced Nellos. That made me feel unpleasant just typing that.
So, for that reason, come here if you are a long time fan or want something more traditional. Otherwise, give Pho Langs a shot for something uniquely fresh and different. More details in a later Pho Langs review ;)
Nice hidden gem along Calgary Trail. Although it doesn't sound like a Vietnamese place, the food is delicious. With a big group, we ordered about 10 different appetizers (beef salad rolls, spring rolls, deep fried squid, green onion cakes, deep fried won tons) and all were very good. The main meal portions are large, and you get very different flavors depending on which plate you order. Definitely recommended.
We were feeling like Vietnamese and used the zomato app like we always do and it brought us to the Brooklyn Tomato. It was amazing! It was so good that we came back the next day for lunch!
We had #26 the vermicelli rice bowl with all the meats and veggies. And the next day we had a red coconut curry with coconut rice that was awesome. I can honestly say that that's the best coconut rice I've tasted. (And I've tried quite a few). You won't be disappointed if you eat here!
Came here with the family jam. Hidden location but it blown away with the delivery. Medium priced. Service excellent. Hands down best Vietnamese restaurant in South Edmonton. Stop wondering where to go you've found it.
Before heading to south Edmonton common we decided to try out a new pho place on the way.
Parking is wonky, and it's near tasty choice and cafe de tropika!
You sit yourself while they bring you your menu and water. Our server was nice and friendly and was quick to offer suggestions and her personal favorites.
Brooklyn Tomato is Vietnamese owned, so I obviously had to have pho.
Price was on the higher side. One size bowl of pho dac biet was $11, which was worth it. They don't skimp on the meat and the broth was really clear and perfectly seasoned and harmoniously played with my taste buds with the hint of lemon grass and lime. So yum!
My sister has the pork chop with rice, which was $14. The pork was good, and the plate had 2 eggs a slice of orange with a bit of a salad on the side, the pork was good. But we didn't think it was worth the price. It kind of taste like the flavoring of the pork chop from pho hoa, and it's 5 dollars cheaper for basically the same plate.
Boyfriend ordered the seafood over crispy noodles, $17.35. Uhm, we weren't a fan. None of the seafood tasted fresh, there was imitation crab sticks and the shrimp still had the ends on them. We'd prefer the crispy noodle and seafood over at xu hue instead for also a smaller price tag.
My rating is a 4 because my pho was good. The service was fast and wait for food wasn't long either.
I'm probably not going to have a second go to Brooklyn Tomato, price and distance would lead me somewhere else.
Order pho for take out.
Not sure where the miscommunication was, but when I realized they have had given me the wrong thing I called back, and they said to come in an exchange.
I did, exchange was no issues, and I loved my food!
Great service, delicious food!
Great service and even better food. The prices are reasonable too. Out of all the Vietnamese restaurants in the city, Brooklyn Tomato is my favourite. We have been regular customers for a few years and have never been disappointed.
Tried this place for the first time. Got the Six Coloured Vermicelli for takeout. Took a look inside, and it was definitely very modernized and attractive. The staff was friendly when I picked up my food. The meal was quite filling with 2 large spring rolls, beef, grilled chicken, pork sausage, shrimps on a skewer and the typical vegetables on the side. It was quite delicious and good quality. All the meats were seasoned quite well. Just a little bit pricey, which reflects the quality of food. Will dine-in next time with some friends.
Went today with friends for dinner. The server was nice and attentive. The restaurant was super quiet but i guess it's new plus Sunday night??? Tried the fried squid for 13 dollars... The squid was fresh and yummy but small portion... not really worth the price. My husband ordered the Lemongrass Seafood and i got the spicy hot soup... Omg the portion on the lemongrass dish was huge. The spicy soup was very yummy as well. Would definitely go back
My wife and I have frequented the Brooklyn Tomato for some time now, I would say our experience has been excellent.
They've recently relocated to the gateway village building on Calgary trail between Japanese village and the home centre. The new restaurant is large, modern and clean. Maybe a little too big, but the chairs are comfortable and service has been very good.
As for the food, the vermicelli bowls are super generous, fresh and really good. Try the 3 color with the pork balls, some of the best in Edmonton.
As for appy's the green onion cakes and the deep fried wontons both are delicious but maybe a little expensive. Worth it though in my opinion.
Highly recommended - come hungry.
Honestly, one of my favorite restaurants. I always leave this place, just to be wanting more the next day. Their menu is great and they have so many options to choose from. Impossible to get tired of this restaurant. Happy they moved closer to ellerslie. I use to have quiet the hike before they moved.
I am so glad they have reopened. I missed them terribly while they were temporarily closed. I got my usual order when they re-opened, Green Onion Cake and Tofu Curry Vegetables with Coconut rice. It was still as good as I remembered it. Hope this new location works out for them.
I am so happy Brooklyn Tomato is now open again at its new location on Calgary Trail. Their Vietnamese Menu is really good. The new place is big and very clean. The owner there is always making sure our dining experience is great and I am just really happy they are open again. My favorite Vietnamese restaurant in all of Edmonton!
Have they closed down?. Just tried their number and message said the number is no longer in service! Does anyone know if they've closed down? We loved this place!
It's always so good when I come here. It's family run and the food is great, quick and the restaurant is clean. I peeked into the kitchen when paying and it was really clean back there too. Service is great, food is good. I always come here after work or school. I've also gotten delivery and take out, always great. Food quality is always nice and presentation is clean and inviting. I really like it here
Definitely Going Back!. I've driven by this restaurant many times and have been intrigued by the name and high reviews. Yum! Inside was simple but clean with a variety of clientele. Service was efficient and friendly. Was happy to find a vegetarian section in the menu and ordered some tofu dishes. My favourite was the Thai Tofu Salad. So peanuty and tasty with red onions and cilantro :) Delicious as a leftover when mixed with rice because the sauce just penetrates everything when left at room temperature for a few hours. Definitely going back to try other vegetarian dishes!!
I don't write reviews. So I don't typically write reviews. I pefer to read them try the food and quietly criticize telling my friends when they ask and they often do. So here it goes. I have come here for the first time and had the house pho. It's good not the best I have ever had but definitely not the worst I would give it a 4 out of 5. The presentation of the food and the restaurant is amazing. There is no uniform so all I can say about the server is that he was clean and diligent. I also had the spring rolls which i can say with confidence is that they are not factory made and are quite enjoyable. As for the price it is about what I expect the pho was almost exactly what I tend to see at almost all the places I've been but the spring rolls were a little more than expected (the taste makes up for that). After all that the only thing I have left to say is the place was packed by the time I left.
Good stuff. We eat here regularly and never dissapoints! lots of vegetarian options too! yummy food, friendly service, big portions at good prices.
A new place I decided to try today. Came here on a lunch hour and there was still room for one. The service was awesome and the food was even better. Probably the best Pho Tai I have ever had. #17 is a mist try.
Best viet food in the city!. Everything we ordered was not only great tasting but big portions and great presentation....bonus Great price!!
Don't let their quirky name fool you. This place is Vietnamiese. It is also ANAZING! You're not limited to Vermacelli here. Try their peanut satay soup or any of their curries.
Great place. Fast service. Support this restraint it is an amazing joint that deserves it
We ate at the Brooklyn Tomato during the Christmas holidays after seeing the great reviews on urbanspoon. The food was great! We got the cashew curry, fried fish, and another tofu curry dish. We loved it all and argued a bit over which dish was best. Three dishes plus rice was the perfrct amount of food for four of us. The decor was as bad as we expected, comparable to a gas station diner, and the music was awful, but the staff were excellent and we were glad we went. I think we will likely get takeout from now on, but I would also feel comfortable eating there alone, plenty of quiet reading corners ;)
We've been looking all over the southside for a delicious but well priced Vietnamese restaurant. Brooklyn Tomato didn't disappoint!
When you combine good sized portions, good quality ingredients and reasonable prices you can't go wrong!
We've definitely found our new favorite Viet place in Edmonton :). We will definitely be back!
Best...everything!. They have a wonderful vegetairan menu, I suggest (14V) curry cashew tofu with mixed veggies and coconut rice. One order is enough for two people. Great veggie sprig roles. Amazing Pho, giant portions of every dish. My partner and I have gone over a dozen times, and it has always been fabulous! This place has quickly became "our" place, as its affordable, healthy, and always bang on delicious!
Terrible Delivery Experience. I ordered delivery last night for supper, #68 Sweet & Sour pork with coconut rice. The lady told me it would take about 20-35 mins, and I waited for more than 40 mins. And when I opened my food, I was shocked, it looked like left overs! There were only 8 pieces of meat, and NO rice at all! I can't believe it cost me 13 bucks! So disappointed!
Great food !! And the prize is too cheap!! This was the second time I had been there with my friends and my wife !! This restaurant alway make me and my wife surprise with their food !! I ordered a zizziling sate beef it's come with steam or coconut rice " your choice" and my wife ordered Peach with prawn and 2other friends ordered 2dishes six colors vermicelli !! It looked awesome and the food tast like a champ !! Highly Recommend !! Will come back for dinner time ! Every weeks !!
Hidden(ish) gem!. Let's be honest...it's not a great location, and it's not a good name, but it is a REALLY good place for Vietnamese food. The flavours are wonderful (they do an especially tasty lemongrass stirfry), and the quality is truly impressive for the value - I like that they use cashews, fresh herbs and plenty of veggies. This place is super vegetarian-friendly, with a good chunk of designated vegetarian items on the menu. My boyfriend and I have tried most of them, and they have all been outstanding. The vegetarian "pho" is often exactly what the doctor ordered. The portions are gigantic: one vermicelli bowl for takeout easily makes up 2 very happy meals for me. I always feel so sorry for this place being empty most of the time, despite great reviews... I can only assume it is mostly a takeout and lunch rush place? I hope so! I really want this yummy little Bonnie Doon treasure to get the business it deserves! Highly recommended.
Ridiculous name but tasty food. charming atmosphere and great vermicelli bowls. veggie spring rolls were good to
Loved it!! This restaurant doesn't look like much from the outside but it is clean and bright inside. The food was fresh and delicious. The pho was nummy, as was the vermicelli and the prices were really affordable. Oh and portion sizes are generous. Eat here! :)
Great food, great service. The service was excellent and the food was really good. We ordered the deep fried seaweed wrapped shrimp for an appetizer. I had a vermicelli bowl and my wife had the pho for our mains. Both were generously sized and had a lot flavor without being too salty.
Very quick service. Went for lunch a few days ago and ordered the "small" wonton soup and spring rolls. The food arrived within 10 minutes and was so hot I nearly burned my mouth. The wonton soup was excellent- lots of veggies and wontons- and the spring rolls were pretty good. Food is reasonably priced but the drinks are expensive- $2.50 for a can of soda. The restaurant is extremely clean. Overall a good experience.
Tasty!. Finally tried this restaurant today because I had a serious craving for pho. Very clean, service was great, and prices fair. I had chicken pho and found it to be just as delicious as many other more well-known Vietnamese restaurants. My bf had Ginger Beef with steamed rice, and it was great. Something about the sauce was different than most ginger beef, but in a really good way! I will definitely be eating from this little hidden gem again!
Rest assured, this is a Vietnamese restaurant, maybe one day I'll ask, "Why Brooklyn Tomato" and do a write up on it. Brooklyn Tomato offers a ' Peanut Sate Beef Noodle Soup ' for $8.95, this meal comes in an incredibly deep bowl that's deceiving to the eye, at first you think you're getting the bare minimum serving for the price, but as you eat, the illusion uncovers itself as there is more food than meets the eye. The broth has a slight tinge of red and is drizzled with chili oil, there's a scant fishy smell that wafts from the broth, possibly from a little inadvertent mixing from their seafood soup that is also offered in the
