Review Kaengthai Bistro - Edmonton

Bonnie
I ordered take out and absolutely loved it. I had the Phanang curry (mild) with chicken and veggie spring rolls. The curry included rice. The curry had a good amount of veggies and protein, and the flavor was wonderful. This will be my go to for Thai going forward.

Great food. Their Thai red and green curries are amazing. Great price for great value. I just wish they were open for a longer duration. They open at around 5pm and close before 8pm.

The pad kea mao and green curry are delicious!!! Also tried the Tom Kha soup, which is sooooo tasty. You can choose the level of spiciness you want. My husband and mine favorite Thai place hands down!!

Our regular restaurant was closed to we tried a new place! We love spice & eat thai food regularly - we ordered Mild this time for the kids. Tom Kha Soup & Red Curry dishes were absolutely inedible, even for us. Insane spice. See photo - pure red pepper seeds and skins. It was like someone dumped an entire jar of red pepper paste into the small dishes. There was more pepper seeds than chicken and vegetables. No other flavour. Very confusing. Not edible dishes. Disappointed to waste money trying a new restaurant. We've been eating dishes like this for years and never had an experience like this.

Delicious, unassuming place. Service was friendly and welcoming. The Pad Thai was amazing and hit the spot for my craving. Don't let the picture fool you, the serving was large with lots of chicken cooked to perfection. Will be back!

Our favourite Thai place! I've tried several things on the menu and the food consistently delicious. It's also always an extremely pleasant interaction order from here and pick up the food (I haven't eaten in since we first tried this restaurant during the pandemic). Highly recommend! Thank you for the great meals and service!

So delicious! Great customer service. 10/10 recommend and will be back soon!

We regularly get takeout and the food is always delicious! Best tom yum soup in the city, IMHO! The curries are excellent, and so are the stir fries. Try #15- Pad Prik Kaeng Tour. They do a good job with the veggies- always nicely cooked and not overdone. Also a good place if you like spicy food- unlike some other places they really make it HOT if you order it that way.

The good is always delicious. I have nothing absolutely nothing bad to say about this place. If you have not yet been graced with the opportunity to eat here you need to change that asap.

This is my favourite place to go on Whyte ave for a quick, affordable, delicious meal. It's also just far enough off the busiest part of Whyte Ave so there is always parking close by if you are driving. If you like authentic Thai food, try it out. They will make it as mild or spicy as you want!

Had dinner here for the first time tonight. We tried the Thai Calamari and the Penang Curry...it was delicious and the server was very friendly! Portions are huge and they welcome substitutions! I will definitely be back and will tell my friends!

Best currry ever!!! Fresh, delicious, reasonably priced!

Fresh ingredients picked daily. Love this place. Authentic Thai food at its best. Junior the cook never fails to impress!

A hidden gem. Fantastic food and a great value. I probably get take out here once a week.

Delicious, fresh, and fast! Eating here is just as amazing as eating in Thailand. I will be a regular for sure!

Our very own piece of Thailand on Whyte Ave!

My friend and I went here for lunch on a Saturday afternoon. It wasn't hard to find and there was parking out front (paid to the city of Edmonton). You order from a board with pictures and descriptions near the cashier then pay and wait for your food. I had the red curry with beef and my friend had the cashew chicken. I like my food spicy so I ordered 'hot'. Turns out I could have ordered 'close to Thailand' without a problem so I will next time! Both of us enjoyed our meal very much. The owner/server was very kind and professional. Portions were also a good size. Recommended!

Comfortable and relaxed atmosphere. Ordered Green onion cake, Thai iced tea, spring rolls, and paid Thai were all 10/10. Liked being able to request spice level. Friendly and promt service!

This place is without a doubt the best Thai in Edmonton! It's so good we eat here or get take out every week! We have never had a bad meal here, and the staff are the nicest, friendliest you could find! The menu is small but has all the best Thai dishes, and they also have some gear Asian beers! The red curry is always spot on, you can choose how hot to have each meal which is great...we've found that other places here don't make the food spicy enough but here you can select "welcome to Thailand" which is exactly what you'd get in Thailand! Delicious!!

Really enjoyed this cozy, casual spot along Whyte ave. We ordered the Panang Curry and Cashew Chicken -both were delightful and very well priced! Not too spicy either. Will return for the great value.

Family owned restaurant with amazing food. Cute space and perfect for a cheaper dinner on whyte. Great service! Would definitely recommend the tofu pad thai!

I'd give this place 6 stars if I could. Best dinner on my recent three-night trip to Edmonton, and it was all of $9.50. Basil (kra-pow) pork, 4 star hot. PERFECT complement of heat and salty goodness that kra-pow should be. Almost no cheap veg filler other restaurants use, just a few strips of well-cooked bell pepper. With a nice base of jasmine rice, this was absolutely, completely delicious, and cheap to boot. If I lived in Edmonton I'd be here weekly. No AC and zero ambiance, order at counter, but I'd sit on the ground and eat with my hands if I could enjoy this dish.

Spicy, but not in the right way.
My wife and I were seeking for some good Thai food around the Old Strathcona area. The impressive high score on Urbanspoon for this place got our attention. However, the lunch with one of our friends there was very, very disappointing.
We all love spicy food, while I especially like spicy Tom Yum soup. Our friend also ordered one with mild spiciness, however, the only difference between hers and mine, which was supposed to be with extreme spiciness, was the amount of crushed chili peppers on top of the soup. I was literally "stunned" when they brought a bowl of Tom Yum soup with so much crushed chili peppers to our table.
The rest of our orders did not make much differences either. The Pad Thai was terrible, even worse than what we could get from Thai Express. The Green Curry was OK, but it was clearly not enough for a meal, even with the coconut rice.

Pad Thai (Chicken). We ordered the Pad Thai - and it was a great experience. The noodles were perfectly cooked. The flavor was tasty and consistent. I'm very sensitive to flavors and this one was just right. Wait time was acceptable. I came in very hungry so I was not sure if the serving was small or just right. The one in-charge suggested additional condiments that might fit well with our preferred level of "spicy-ness".

My friends recently moved to the Bonnie Doon area, and we decided to go out on Whyte for some thai food. They’ve ordered from this place before, and it was pretty good, so we decided to try and dine-in. Kaengthai Bistro is located on Whyte ave, around 101 street. The outside of it is typical for what you’d expect to see from any place on Whyte. The inside is fairly small, with only a few tables. It’s nice and casual here, and not as formal and nice as the other Thai restaurants in Edmonton. They have a giant menu displayed, and you can customize the spiciness of your dish. The protocol is to order at the front and pay, and you can sit down and they’ll bring you your food. The service was friendly and prompt. The prices of this place is really good compared to the other thai places in Edmonton! Definitely a plus. I decided to order a beverage this time around. Usually I don’t order a beverage and just opt to drink water, but my friend from Red Deer insisted that I try some Thai iced tea. It comes with a nice layer of milk on top that you mix, and it creates a nice a smooth drink. It was actually quite refreshing, and it was one of those pseudo-hot spring days in Edmonton so it was really nice to drink on warm day. We decided to start off with the spring rolls and the Calamari. The spring rolls were okay, not great. I’ve definitely had better spring rolls. They are pretty thick, and though vegetarian, there didn’t seem to be that many flavours going on. I usually like vegetarian options for spring rolls, samosas and things alike because the meat alternatives are often single-noted. There was a lack of flavour. The calamari, however, was probably one of the best that I’ve ever had. Calamari is one of those dishes where it can either be really well done, or just completely overcooked and rubbery. These were seasoned well, and cooked perfectly. The squid was very tender and soft, and the accompanied sauce was amazing. The sauce was light and garlic-ey with a hint of swee

Tucked away past the hustle and bustle of Whyte Ave, Kaengthai Bistro is worth the walk east, just past the Strathcona tracks. The decor and menu is straightforward and simple, but the food more than makes up for it. It’s a bit of a mix between a take out and sit down restaurant. You order at the counter (menus plastered on the wall with pictures!) but the waitress/owner will bring out a pot of tea and your dishes so pick a table/booth to sit at while you wait...

A real gem. We love Thai food and have been to many restaurants in the city. This is one of our favorites.
It is a quaint eclectic decor. You are always welcomed by friendly staff and owner. The menu is small but everything is extremely flavorful and delicious. A must try for real Thai lovers!

AMAZING. My brother Mike introduced me to this little Thai rest on whyte ave last week, and the food is to die for:) I will keep going back as now it is one of my favs!!!!

Wow. So good.. I fully approve. Got Spring Rolls and they were bigger than the norm. The Thai Calamari was the best squid I've ever had. I had the Green Curry and even though it was a mild heat, it still cut through my tolerance. The Pad Thai was solid.

Excellent Thai Food. The inside of the place was well put together and quasi-intimate. Will happily go back. Give it a shot.

Cozy place _ Love it :). I came here with my date few days ago. Outside was raining, cold and windy, and I was craving for something warm, so we decided to have dinner here. We had Tomyum soup, and shared Red Curry and some noodles. Tomyum was hot, spicy and sweet, I totally loved it. The bowl was huge, I already felt full before having the curry. Red Curry (with beef) was good but it didn't have that wow factor. The rice was a bit dry, the curry was alright. Having said that, it also came in good portion. We couldn't finish the noodles because we were really full. The family-like atmosphere definitely deserved a A+. The service was good too, the staff were extremely polite and attentive. I absolutely would recommend my friends to visit Kaengthai.

Had the calamari, pad Thai and the garlic pork on rice. Everything was great especially the calamari. Great value! Finally a reasonably priced Thai place that serves legit food.

Tasty Thai Food on Whyte. We dropped in for lunch and were impressed. Delicious food at reasonable prices, simple but pleasant atmosphere, You order at the counter, but food is served to your table. Attractive presentation and lovely flavour.

Nice, low-key. A nice place to have some yummy Pad Thai or a quick curry. You order at the counter but there are tables to sit and the music was unobtrusive when we tried it out.

Make sure you know what you are doing if you ask for extra spicy!

:-)

Went here for dinner tonight. Service was SUPER fast and the food was DELICIOUS!! We had spring rolls, tofu pad Thai and tofu red curry. Everything was really fresh and the flavours and spice were perfect. I would highly recommend this place!

New Thai on Whyte. Cute little Thai place on east Whyte. The menu is short, simple and delicious. The appetizers include tasty satays while the mains are divided into curries and stir-frys (both come with complimentary jasmine rice). The food is fresh, spicy (they ask for your preferred level of heat) and reasonably authentic. Prices are very reasonable for the quality and location. Glad to see a new and affordable Thai place on the southside !

Best Thai food in Edmonton! It makes me sad that this place isn't busier. I really hope they can keep their doors open.

They seriously have the best Thai food in the city. The curries are great. Service is attentive without being overbearing. Food comes out hot, fresh and fast.
Send all your friends and family here! Keep this place open!

Amazing Thai Food!!!! I am addicted!!!. I LOVE Thai - it is my absolute favorite cuisine. I have eaten Thai at many restaurants in Edmonton, and I would have to say that Kaengthai Bistro is now my fave (based on three visits). Their panang curry is so delicious. I would say it is the best dish to try when first visiting. Both soups are also amazing! The prices are extremely reasonable, and the service is fast and attentive. If you love Thai and you are in the Whyte Ave area - eat here!!!!!!! I just took my sister and brother in law out to dinner last night - and they both agreed - the Thai food here is amazing!
Chris
Great casual Thai place. Fresh food with tons of authentic Thai flavor. Definitely coming back soon.
Reasonable prices ($13 for a curry). Portions are large enough but don't expect a ton of leftovers.
Very casual atmosphere - dine-in customers order at the counter first and then get served at their table.
Would love to see them add beer/wine and desserts to the menu.

Very good. Food tastes good, authentic with a touch of european style. food is fresh and the taste is on the side of sweet and spicy; staff is friendly and service is fast... will go back again soon
Maureen
Great food - flavorful, fresh and not heavy or greasy! Food was really fast and service was friendly. Reasonably priced, too!

Awesome curry dishes. And certainly there is value for your money

What a gem. As good as Thai food gets, and reasonable prices. Curries are delicious.
Friendly service and nice clean little spot to enjoy a meal. Will be back for sure.

A new concept for Edmonton - Thai Bistro. The menu is small but the quality of the dishes is very good and the prices are reasonable. Authentic ingredients and fresh. Only complaint is that I found the Tom Yum soup portion to be relatively small. Altogether a very good option on east whyte ave. - definitely worthy of a go.

We both ordered the green curry with coconut milk, eggplant, bell peppers, and basil leaves. The curry is served with a bowl of jasmine rice. You have the option to order the food as spicy as you like. They have a cute hot meter ranging from mild (one pepper) to Welcome to Thailand (5 peppers). Take it to Thailand if you dare… For a place with reasonable prices (My curry was roughly 10 dollars), the food definitely hit the spot. The curry was flavorful, and a little spicy (I like it hot), the rice was cooked perfectly, and the veggies in the curry added a nice flavor. If you’re looking for a quick bite of Thai food, I would recommend hitting up Kaengthai Bistro!
