Pretty standard Vietnamese menu, but well made. We started with 6 Salad Rolls, then I had the Special Pho, my wife had the Special for one with Grilled Prawns, and my son had the Bun Tom with Grilled Prawns and Beef. All were pretty good, and the Pho had a nice broth - not too oily or salty.
Very fast lunch service. A Friday morning craving for pho at work turned into a quick trip to Doan's during my lunch break. The food itself was good, but I never knew that chicken curry noodles had hash browns in it. It was...interesting to say the least. The rest of the dish was good, and was a good portion size for the price. But the most impressive part was the service that I got. Even while the restaurant was around 80% full at lunch, I managed to make it from being seated to out the door and having paid for the bill in 30 minutes, which was very good!
The Pho was very good the broth was a little on the sweet side. My partner had the chicken curry soup which was very good. Would definitely come back.
Our go to restaurant. Have been going to Doan's either on Whyte of downtown for years and have always loved the food and casual atmosphere. Quiet and always friendly. Usual orders are lemongrass chicken or pho. Prices remain very reasonable.
I don't know what everyone is talking about, this place is great!
Food was amazing, atmosphere is cozy and classy and service was excellent. All at a decent price. Will definitely be returning!
Tasty. Just ate there tonight. Visiting Edmonton for the weekend and fancied Vietnamese tonight. We both liked it, nice atmosphere, good food. I had the sizzling satay and my wife had the sizzling coconut curry with an order of spring rolls. The spring rolls were average. We'd go again but it was a touch on the expensive side. Our waiter was really nice but the girl at the till didn't appear to want to be there.
Excellent service, tasty food at a fair price. We will be back for sure. Reservations recommended
Mediocre Service, fantastic food. Tonight we went to the Doans just off of Jasper ave for supper, me and my boy friend were going to meet some friends there. When we arrived they sat us almost immediately which was great but they didnt bring us anything to drink or ask us what we wanted to drink for over 10 mins! When our friends finally arrived they were quick to take our order and our food came out quickly. The food was good for the price that we paid. I had the bun mau dish and the spring rolls that came with it were fantastic. My boyfriend had the pork chops and said that tthey were really delicious they weren't dry at all ! We all really enjoyed our meals the food is well done, however I cant say the same for the service. although the girl was quick to take our orders she was not the one to bring out our food, she hardly refilled our water and when the bill came she didn't split it! But the worst part was that she kept checking back even though we were still sitting there talking.
Consistently yummy. I have been going to Doans south and downtown for a good 10 years now - not often but nonetheless. I ALWAYS enjoy my meal and leave feeling satisfied. They have nice vegetarian options (lemongrass grilled veggies are my all time fave) and the food is super fresh. They will also make a vegetarian salad roll, which isn't filling by any means but still very tasty with the peanut sauce to dip. No delivery though - boo!!! A bit pricey for take-out but if you're going to spend money on take-out, why not spend a bit more and get an awesome meal? 2 thumbs up.
The best soup ever and the vermicelli w pork and chicken was delightful! Well done to the staff as well
Decent. The all popular vermicelli bowls are not the best in town! But its always decent! WHAT IS IN THAT SAUCE!!!!! You can gurantee good service. It is a little pricey, but what do you expect for downtown! Good location! The rest of the menu is tasty!
Our family has been going here for a very long time. My favorite dish is the lemon grass chicken. The coconut curry vegetables are also very good
Good in the clutch. Doans is a good reliable restaurant where you know you can get a decent meal in a relaxed atmosphere at a good price. It's pretty much toned down Vietnamese food that appeals to a western palette.
All the Vietnamese staples are there. Spring rolls, salad rolls, vermicelli bowls and hot pots. The hot pots can be salty at times but still have a lot of flavour to them. The rice is usually good. Sometimes I get crispy bits of rice, but I think that's because they cook it in a big rice cooker and I probably got some rice from the edge of the cooker.
Doans just falls short of amazing food, but I can't really fault it for anything.
Fantastic Tofu. The food here in general is really great, and affordable. You get a ton of food for very little coin. The lemon grass tofu, curry chicken soup and salad rolls are among my faves.
Average. This place is a safe bet if you've never tried Vietnamese food, I'd take my parents here, but for myself, I prefer a place like Thanh Thanh on 97th St.
Doan's is quite spacious and clean, so it's nice for a family outing or a first date. The menu is pretty long and there is a good selection items that are more Chinese or Thai in addition to traditional Vietnamese dishes. We had Vietnamese coffee (great - but VERY strong, don't have this with dinner, or you won't sleep til the morning!), salad rolls, Singapore style noodles, and spicy beef soup. The salad rolls were very average - I find that most restaurants skimp on the ingredients. If you want good salad rolls, make your own! Use pork, shrimp, cucumbers, carrots, and most importantly, basil and mint for the best flavor.
The Singapore noodles were really tasty, they didn't skimp on the meat/shrimp and the dish was spicy AND savory. Big serving, too, I got 3 meals out of my order! I didn't try my boyfriend's beef soup, but he seemed satisfied with it.
Bottom line: take grandma here, she'll find it "interesting." Safe lunch/dinner option if you are in the neighborhood, but this isn't really a "destination," if you know what I mean.
I had the combo plate. Good portion size for the price. Very tasty. Menus and decor are very very dated.
4/5 for Doan's. I've noticed Doan's a lot with it's two locations, one downtown and one off Whyte Ave. Then I finally got around to trying it! We chose the downtown location, which is just north of Jasper Ave. It was too chilly for the patio, but upon entering, I noticed that their patio out front was quite nice, with very nice outdoor seating. Inside, you enter into a very large, spacious and bright room. The decor is fairly simple, with a lot of greenery and some tasteful art on the walls. There was a mix of booths and tables and we were promptly seated at a table for four. The service was very friendly and attentive.
The menu is quite large, with various pages of options. It took a while to get through every page and narrow down the choices. It all sounded really good! I decided to figure out what I wanted to drink first - I felt like I wanted to try something interesting. I was almost sold on the Ca Phe Phin Sua (Vietnamese Coffee) when I noticed the Che Ba Mau (A dessert drink good for during or after meals. Mixed red & green bean, jelly, and coconut milk. - $4.00) in the Dessert section. The description gave me permission to order this for "during my meal" so that's what I chose to do. But actually, I finished it before the meal even came. I wanted interesting, and that's what I got! I'd had something similar before at another Viet place in town, but I think that this one was much better. It was very much like a coconut milkshake, except with a lot of strange stuff thrown in like beans and long strings of green jelly. Also, there was a big pasty ball of something which broke down as I drank. It all tasted great, and the weirdness didn't phase me!
I was pretty certain that I was going to go with a Bun (Vermicelli) bowl for my main course. But then right at the last moment I got a different recommendation and was informed that there was something else on the menu that I HAD to try. It sounded like it was the dish that most people came to Doan's for: Bun Ca Ri Ga (Curry chicken soup with slices of chicken breast, potato, onions & vermicelli. - $8.95). Since I don't eat meat on weekdays, I requested to have mine made without chicken, but with tofu instead. They were more then willing to oblige. Where to begin with my thoughts on this soup? Firstly, thank you to those who recommended it, because I wouldn't have chosen it on my own. This soup is spot-on. It's a must-try. The broth is a creamy, curry, coconut dream come true - extremely flavourful in the very best ways. I can't comment on what it would be like the intended way with chicken, but the tofu was perfect. It absorbed all of the delicious flavours, and it was tasty fried tofu, not just the plain white cubes. The biggest surprise was the potatos. Not normally a vegetable that I would associate with Asian foods, these were incredible! It tasted like they were deliciously roasted before becoming a part of the soup. The only thing that would have improved the soup would have been more potatos! The whole thing just came together so beautifully. So in short, do yourself a favour and try this soup. You won't be sorry.
Originally I had planned on having dessert because they serve the hazelnut ice cream pear here, but I just had no more room. I even had to take most of my soup home because it had been so huge. We sat around chatting for quite a while longer after the meal was finished, and the server still kept coming around and refilling our waters and never pressured us to leave. I was impressed with this place!
Needs remodeling. The Whyte Ave location has a better atmosphere.. but they both taste lovely! Good Vietnamese food!
Good food, but not service.... The food here was delicious. It took a while for our server to come over and take our order. The food took a while to come and came at very different times. Not a great place to go for lunch if you are restricted by time. Remember to reserve a spot as it fills very fast.
Food is ok, service is slow especially at lunch with a big group. Definately not the place to go if you're in a rush. Don't forget to make a reservation as it gets busy fast.
Delish! Fast and awesome service with great food - no idea why anyone else would not like it. Plus they have a fantastic outdoor patio.
Food is just okay. Service is terrible. I once had to change my order 'to go' and eat it in my office. I was the only one at the table whose meal didn't come.
Excellent pho tai and vermicelli bowls
No wonder this has been an Edmonton institution for 30 years!
Amazing food. Had the spicy Vietnamese soup (Bun Bo Hue), which was great, with an outstanding broth.
Nice location, clean, intimate.
Excellent service!
My spouse is pregnant and was craving Won Ton Soup and we came across this restaurant. They were about to close and didn't mind serving us and oh my gosh the food looked amazing and tasted amazing. They also didn't rush us or the food which was great. Roger the server was amazing
Doan's is the place to go for some authentic Vietnamese meals. The service and the quality of the food are always top notch. Some of the best Pho in Edmonton, and the salad rolls are always super delicious.
Loved this place when I went to university many moons ago, and was so pleased to see that 20 years later it is thriving. Some of the best broth this side of Vietnam, and rare beef actually arrives at the table still rare. If you're visiting Edmonton, visit Doan's. You will enjoy.
