Review Oranj Sushi - Edmonton

Ley Dla
Sorry, but this place was not good at all. I first came here maybe 6 years ago when they first opened up. The food was terrible. I came back last week to give them another shot but unfortunately the food was as horrible as I remembered. The spring rolls tasted like dough and barely had any filling... definitely a frozen item. The sushi and sashimi were not fresh and the chicken was drenched in a very sweet, sugary sauce. The ramen is way too expensive for such a small, underwhelming bowl. I wont be coming back. There are a TON of way better Japanese restaurants in the city who deserve every cent you pay... sorry.

Cooked well and in good quanitity, price is pretty high for most items. The menu has a decent variety of items, including sushi, rolls, tempura, bento, ramen, and plenty of appetizers. Tastes great and has excellent texture and flavour. Place is clean and staff is friendly. Great place for groups.

The food was really good. I was surprised at the thickness of the beef tataki and the amount of seaweed it came with! Most Japanese restaurants give the tiniest amount of seaweed but plenty of onion slices. The sashimi was super fresh. I really liked the food. Only downside is that it is expensive, hence only ordered 2 dishes.

Typical Edmonton prices on sushi, not the cheapest selection. Not impressed with the service and timelines, but otherwise they served with a smile. Definitely hasn’t earn my recurring business.

Portion is generous, the food is okay, Sashimi is fresh. Price is a it steep, the restaurant should definitely offer higher quality food for this price. Id recommend visiting when it is not as busy.

Came here unsure of what to expect and I was still blown away by the quality. The food was absolutely fantastic as well as the drinks, and all fairly priced as well. I was very impressed at the freshness of the fish despite how far inland we are. I would say this is a must eat for anyone visiting West Edmonton mall.

I come here whenever i crave for aburi sushi cake and salmon sushi pizza.. My goodness its the best tasting i have been to so far.. Service is a little slow but that's cause they make it from scratch.. Totally worth it!! Check it out and try those 2 items. Worth every penny.

This is one of my favourite Japanese restaurants Quality food, friendly server and inside West Edmonton mall Ordered beef teriyaki and chirashi donburi

I went here without any expectations because I had heard from the past that this sushi place isn't exactly the best. When we got here, we were seated promptly and offered drinks. Food came out pretty quickly as well.<br/><br/>The pricing is similar to majority of sushi places in Edmonton and is comparable to Kyoto or Mikado.<br/><br/>However, the quality of the food is really bad. We got pressed tuna sushi, beef tataki, and premium assorted sushi.<br/><br/>The pressed tuna sushi was pretty big - bigger than others I've had in the past - but the tuna wasn't seared very well or not enough to my liking. The sauce and flavours didn't really taste that great either. Worst of all the sushi wasn't pressed tightly enough so it was really hard to eat and it kept falling apart. Overall I didn't enjoy the pressed tuna sushi and this is probably the worst place to get it at.<br/><br/>The beef tataki was not bad, the ponzu sauce was perfect but the beef slices were not cold at all so it didn't feel right eating it.<br/><br/>The premium assorted sushi comes with 10 nigiri sushi and some maki. It was really not bad at all but the sushi weren't fresh and they were small in size.<br/><br/>overall, service was decent as the food didn't take too long to come out and they were pretty prompt in taking our orders but there was little interaction and our server didn't seem very happy. <br/><br/>the ambience wasn't anything too great. From the outside it kinda looks decent when you look in but when you're already sitting there it has a very different feel from a regular sushi restaurant.<br/><br/>the food could really be better especially for the price that you pay. I could go to a much better sushi restaurant with the same prices and leave satisfied.

Best sushi we have had in alberta in a long time. Ordered the boat and was not disappointed. Portions were so large we could not even finish with two of us and had to take lots home!<br/><br/>Our Server was a refreshing change as well. She remembered our names and brought good conversation and recommendations to our experience. Prices were reasonable for west edmonton with a boat + beers. Low crowds meant instant service. Food came within 10 mins!<br/><br/>Would recommend for any sushi lover.

We were very pleasantly surprised. Finding a good sushi place in landlocked Alberta is tough, but Oranj really was a lot better than we expected. The sashimi was surprisingly fresh and good quality, the rolls were great, and the sushi pizza was pretty interesting! All in all I would definitely recommend this place. We are pretty picky about sushi as we've had some pretty amazing experiences (Hawaii, Hong Kong, Vancouver, San Francisco to name a few).
Ryan David
Probably one of the worst sushi experiences I've had in a long time. The sushi is extremely overpriced for what you receive. The rolls are 90% rice and the sushi is bland and tasteless. I would absolutely 100% not recommend this restaurant to anyone.
Seefood
Pretty good. Sat down..googled the place. The ratings had me worried but the sushi is actually really good. Philadelphia roll, sushi pizza with salmon, and spring salad rolls were great!
Littleduckyg
They will scam you!. I've gone here a couple times and it's not bad food wise however today I was charged double the price because I did a substitute on a sushi! I thought the server was joking so the chef came out and explained that because they don't normally do the substitution it will cost me double the price of the original roll. I showed him the price difference on similar rolls and he pretty much told me to stick it. After this rude service I will never go back. Stay away if you have special dietary needs!

Over sized, flimsy sushi at exorbitant prices. There are some very basic expectation s that I think are reasonable to have for any sushi restaurant, like fresh fish, properly cooked rice, and good construction, and its on the lattermost deliverable that Oranj totally flops for me. over all the meal was a barely passable eating experience, tastes were basic, freshness was questionable, texture was fast-food sushi quality but the construction, the actual build of the rolls, was just terrible. They have no hold, the moment you take a bite it will completely fall apart and you'll be left with sushi salad. And hey, I know that typically one is expected to eat a roll in one bite, so I wouldn't bat one lash if it weren't for that they make the rolls so freaken big! There is NO way they can expect customers to eat rolls this wide in one bite. Further more I have a problem with the prices. given the heft of their sushi I can't really complain too much about the roll prices, but the appies and other such menu items are stupid expensive (you are gunna charge me $7 for some sliced up tofu with miso dressing on it? really?) <br/>Oranj has got to one of the worst sushi experiences I have had in the greater Edmonton area, but because of their convenient location and being the only sushi place in west Edmonton mall, I have actually gone twice and regretted it both times. I won't be back a third time though.

Disappointed. I was at Oranj today in west Edmonton mall . I was really looking forward to having sushi, the place looked very nice . Unfortunately the food was quite bad . This is my first review & normally I wouldn't do this but it was honestly pretty awful and highly priced . It cost me almost 30$ for myself . I had a Bento box . The teriyaki chicken was very tough and fatty . The California rolls were squishy and the avocado in them was brown . The rice was very hard and like rubber . Lastly the "fresh " salmon , and shrimp was super tough rubbery and foul smelling . I have had sushi many times . I know it's fish but it should not give off an awful fishy smell . <br/>I'm normally never one to complain about food and I wouldn't take my time to write a review ... But honestly it was pretty bad & im not feeling great since I ate it . The waitresses were very nice and the atmosphere was pleasant just unfortunately the food was a really big miss . <br/>I wouldn't go back to Oranj Sushi again .
Abby
Over priced sushi and not very fresh either. I ordered their sushi pizza and the crust was so hard and the sauce was drenched in mayo. This is the 2nd visit and both times failed.
Ashley Allen
I have been there twice. Each time was a good experience. Staff was super accommodating and friendly. Service was fast. The food was a bit over priced but it was mediocre food.
Jared
This place sucks!!! Overpriced
Dallas Graham
Way over priced and tasted fake. Took so long to even get a drink order. Entire process was painful
Kayleigh
The soy-wrapped roll was very good. The rest of the rolls were average

The low rating this place has is Astounding!. I want to start off by saying I LOVE THIS restaurant! It is delicious and I don't care if I'm paying more here then I would be elsewhere I enjoy my meal consistently every time. The golden deep fried scallops and the Dragon rolls are a constant go to favorite! Also love the cooked beef they do. I think this place is the perfect example of don't base your decision to go try somewhere on other peoples opinions. Most people I have met in life don't know their ass from a hole in the wall so why would they know where is good to eat? lol Try things for your own and come up with your own conclusions! It's a lot more fun then eating at franchise restaurants every day or missing out on a potential gem!

Ok food, I'll tell you when I get some service.. What is the one thing that kills any desire to eat at a restraunt (aside from atmosphere/cleanliness) yup the automatic gratuity. oh hey, you have a group of X or more people? well we're just going to tack on XX% to your bill because obviously you are going to skimp on the tip.<br/><br/>The problem with Oranj is that after they have done this, they decided that since they are getting the tip no matter what, they don't need to do anything in the way of service. we waited twice as long as any customer for anything. including simple water. almost all of our orders were messed up in some way, and one of the members of our group didn't even get his food. we had to order it a second time. no apology was made, instead our server tried to pretend that they were still waiting for it to be made and came back five minutes later to "Confirm" his order. And even when we got the food it was sub-par at best<br/><br/>Please note, this was in the middle of the day during the workweek. The restaurant was NOT busy and other groups who had arrived after us were seated quickly, and served faster than anything we got. the only reasoning we can think of for this was that those customers had control over what they would have to leave for their tip and needed to be pleased more.<br/><br/>had I had any control over my tip I would not have given the amount that was forced upon us.<br/><br/>I will never return to this restaurant again nor will I recommend it to anyone I know. (enemies included.)

Never go here. Although Oranj looks like a nice place, I do not recommend it.<br/>First they informed us of the mandatory 15% gratuity, that would have been ok had the service been acceptable and the food had been better than sub-par.<br/><br/>I ordered a steamed rice, 2 pieces of nigiri and some kappa mak.<br/><br/>After everyone else at our table received their meals, I had to wait 20 minutes after everyone was eating to be informed that, my food was coming. After about 10 minutes of watching my friends eat, they asked me whether I wanted steamed rice or sushi rice. I was flabbergasted that they asked me when I had clearly stated steamed rice. Who eats sushi rice in a bowl anyways?<br/><br/> I received my rice and 2 pieces of nigiri..about 5 minutes later I received my Kappa maki.. All of these items were overpriced and didn't taste very good. A friend of mine ordered a sushi boat that was 69$, didn't have many pieces of sushi on it, and the rolls were apparently terrible.<br/><br/>After this the hostess took about 15 minutes after we were clearly finished to even ask us if we wanted our bills, once they brought them they asked if we wanted a debit machine, after she brought that she continually left the table to talk to the other table then came back to finish our transactions, she did this about 6 or 7 times. <br/>Overall this was a terrible dining experience for us, I rate this a 0.3/10 and I would not recommend this place to anyone.<br/><br/>I would much rather eat at the spaghetti factory across the way next time.

The food here is pricey but well worth it. You get a lot for the price, my friend and I shared a lunch for approximately $60 and was very satisfied and completely stuffed. The food is yummy, their service was nice and quick. The only thing I did not like was the beef tataki. It was completely bland, the beef managed to have no flavour to it! You can get much better tataki elsewhere, and for less.
Jason Young
Do not listen to the bad reviewers. They probably think Tokyo express is good. <br/><br/>The food is quite good actually. Service could use some work. Very pricy. Pricier than Mikado but on par in terms of nigiri sushi, sashimi, etc.<br/><br/>I went there today for lunch with two friends. We had deluxe sushi, deluxe sashimi, chicken kara-age and beef tataki. All were delicious..sashimi included yellowfin (not bluefin, erroneously assumed by one of the reviewers.)<br/>And also toro, along with other staples of fish such as tako and salmon.

Suprised by the %, Been there a number of times; always had friendly service and good sushi. I have and recommend to friends all the time, who have agreed it good

This is a insult of Japanese food. Crappy service and ripoff pricey menu, which they deserves burn into hell. And the food are not even close to good. I can pay the same price to have a much better supper in Kyoto

Surprisingly great!. Small restaurant with a big menu and great food! Waitress was informative, attentive and good fun. <br/> Not a lot of atmosphere but terrific food, artfully displayed.

Worst Service Ever.. Our server was too busy talking to her friends to take our order. I had to ask the hostess to get her from the back. When she finally came over to take our order, she didn't bother writing it down. She actually interrupted me to tell me that maybe we shouldn't be ordering so much food. We ended up getting spring rolls instead of dynamite rolls. We ordered eight items off the menu and only ended getting 4. Food was terrible. Service was terrible. Don't bother going here. It's just a waste of money.

Better than the rating. Stopped in for dinner one night on the recommendation of a friend. I wasn't sure what to expect. The place is trendy looking but it's still in the mall... so I half expected over-priced mall sushi. I was surprised, it was actually quite good.<br/><br/>The service was great; friendly and attentive without being all over us. We ordered the chicken karaage and a few different maki rolls and nigiri sushi. The karaage was definitely some of better I've had. It was actually the tender marinated chunks of dark meat, lightly battered and fried like it should be; unlike the chicken wings or breast meat skewers I've seen around Edmonton. It was sided with a crisp and fresh flavorful veggie salad which was a nice touch. The spider roll was an explosion of fresh crunchy veggies and crispy, warm, and freshly fried crab, which is a must. The sauce for it was nice too. Not overly imposing. They also served the red tuna, or Bluefin, which seems such a scarcity in Edmonton, so I indulged with that. The rest of the food was good but not particularly memorable.<br/><br/>Overall the place was a bit pricey but on par with most spots in the city. The food was above average and the service was good. Is it the best sushi place ever, anywhere? No. Is it about as good as you'll get here? Pretty much, and it's a step ahead of most places. I'll be back.

Authentic, delightful. Some people might find it awful because they are so used to with Canadian-tailored mediocre sushi bars around Edmonton. I found this restaurant authentic. Tuna Tataki. I heard some people complaining about the acidity of it and thick texture. Oh well, the fish they got might not be as fresh as the fish you could get in Vancouver or East Coast, but the way they cooked it was just enough to bring me nostalgia of having good seafood. I'd rather come to this place to enjoy some authentic Asian sushi food than some other real mediocre sushi bars in the town. If you really know what makes a real good sushi or if you have been to countries where the food is from, you will appreciate Oranj more. Just my opinion. I enjoyed every single visit I had.

My wife and I really enjoy sushi, and make a point of eating at interesting looking sushi places when we travel. We decided on Oranj because we were hungry and it looked like a well put-together restaurant. Well, don't judge a book by its cover! We were seated quickly by a friendly waitress who then disappeared; when she finally returned after a long while, she informed us that she had been awhile because she had been in the washroom. Not a good sign! We ordered a mixed sushi sampler, tuna tataki, and agedashi tofu. The mixed sushi was ok, although the fish was pretty meager. The tuna tataki was disgusting, and we couldn't even finish it. The fish should NEVER have been served, especially as sashimi; it had a thick band of gristle or membrane running through it, which made the texture, taste, and appearance very unpleasant. Furthermore, it was bathed in a very acidic and unpleasant sauce. Likely the worst thing I have been served at a japanese restaurant. The tofu was ok. But underneath it we found a mound of what looked like fried cabbage (?). Very odd. All in all, a terrible meal that I was embarrassed to pay for.

When I got to Oranj, i was expecting something really different. The server was very friendly and she showed me to my table. The waitress came, took my drink order and was fairly quick about bringing it back. That was where the good service ended. I ordered the lunch box, and asked if they could substitute something to include the dynamite roll (i didnt really care how much extra it would cost)The waitress said very flatly "no," without even another suggestion or a "sorry" so I had finally just settled on a roll. Now, before I ordered I thought the prices were a little ridiculous. However, when my food was brought out to me - it was huge! I'm a avid sushi fan and I'm always trying new places, and this roll was by far the biggest one I've ever received. If you're looking for great sushi in Edmonton, definitely eat here... Just don't ask to substitute anything. :)

Not so great. Ordered the lunch bento, the menu clearly stated pick from the following items; beef, chicken, tempura or sashimi. I tried to order the chicken and beef but they said I couldn't. She informed me I may if I paid an extra charge. I declined and had the chicken and sashimi. My friend ordered the tempura and chicken. Both of our terriyaki chicken were cold. The tempura was doughy and undercooked, maybe the batter was too thick, i don't know. It was fairly expensive. I'd save your money and go elsewhere for better quality sushi.

Excellent experience!. I was so happy finally WEM has such a decent Japanese restaurant (don't like the Tokyo Express at the food corner)~ Anyway, we tried the sushi cake. The crunchy layer inside was nice! ~ We also ordered some veggie rolls and California rolls (but with brown rice). I was impressive the sushi chef here are so creative. <br/>I think this place is still worth to go. I don't understand why there are many negative reviews here...
EdmontonTasteTest
Went there while hosting family for vacation - HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE experience!<br/><br/>No WONDER this place only has a 35% rating at the time of me writing this review.<br/><br/>Walked in, and the seating was rather lame compared to how the restaurant looks from afar / walking past.<br/><br/>Looked at the menu and it looked great. Prices were rather high, but I tried to deal with that and order what we wanted.<br/><br/>The tempura was soggy, overly battered, and just plain wrong.<br/><br/>The only decent thing of my menu selection was the TINY TINY pieces of sushi I had (that were $2.99 per PIECE) that i had in a mouthful... I know sushi is small but this was ridiculous. <br/><br/>Now, the service... don't get me STARTED on the service. First of all, THREE asian girls working at the front barely speak English, which is why all of the communication rests on the one asian girl who does speak fluent english... She waits on us and my food is wrong, so she takes $2.50 off of my order. Yes. A whole $2.50. Didn't offer to correct that my order came out wrong, no apology, nothing. Most places would correct it and give you your proper food dish... nope... so I still had to pay for this lame dish that i didn't even order. It was close on the menu but was not what I wanted. I said it was wrong as soon as I saw it but with barely any English communication, it was hard to get my point across without looking like a big beach in the restaurant.<br/><br/>So, the bill comes, the stupidly expensive bill for maybe 10 bites of food... I look at it and see that she didn't actually take the $2.50 off. I finally had enough and didn't even care about the $2.50 at this point... I asked her to remove at least half if not all of the cost of my food dish since it was wrong and NOT what i ordered. In my defense, I DID state that it was not what I ordered at the TIME it was put on the table, so it is not like I ate it and then complained after...<br/><br/>I decide to not be a pushover and demand that the item be removed. Server huffs and puffs and looks at me like i am stupid, and disappears for 17 minutes. Yes, 17 minutes... so I decide to get up and go to the front of the restaurant and asked the hostess if I can pay with her and just leave... they are lucky I didn't dine and dash.. I shouldn't have to pay for their mistake but they got hostile and even threatened to call mall security when I said "I will pay for my bill but not the incorrect dish that I did not order at all."<br/><br/>Now, after being told "you don't understand do you" and feeling like i wanted to smack this rude beach in the face, I decided to say "screw it ill pay for it" and she was like oh okay.<br/><br/>Sure enough, I paid up, not like I had a choice other than the oh-so-intimidating mall security being called on me..... and i made a point of saying i was giving her ZERO tip for her attitude and horrible experience.<br/><br/>All in all, server is rude and does not understand anything apparently... food is NOT worth it... price is STUPID!<br/><br/>go 30 seconds upstairs to T&T asian supermarket and get a delicious dish of sushi for $7, freshly made and portioned properly... go sit in the food court even.. not like Oranj offers anything special.<br/><br/>AVOID ORANJ!!!!

Very high priced for mediocre sushi and sashimi. You pay Mikado or wasabi price yet it is worse than Tokyo express. My friend ordered beef bowl most of it was just rice and very little dried up beef. Is it only me that saw rolls were premade in the sushi bar? $2 charge for extra wasabi??? I mean come on, if I EVER go back I will bring my own wasabi.
Woof
Worst sushi i ever had. tuna was not fresh. portions were small. next time i will just go to t&t cause at least i know it will be fresh. gross.

Have some surprised but not totally impressed. Oranj has been opened for awhile now. The first time I passed by them, it was a busy Friday evening and one could smell the distinctive 'deep fried' odour 3 feet from their store. It was a big turn off since I hate smelling like deep fried food after my meal.<br/><br/>Yesterday, I passed by their store again but this time, the odour was gone. Maybe they took care of the ventilating issue or it was just close to closing time (8:30pm). Anyway, I decided to give them a try. After all, I cannot say no to sushi.<br/><br/>A couple of items on their menu caught my eyes: Cones/sushi with soybean sheet instead of the traditional seaweed sheet and Sushi Cake. Since I was by myself, I only ordered a Sushi Cake and a Chop Chop cone with soybean sheet.<br/><br/>First up was Chop Chop cone. For those who do not know Chop Chop, it is diced raw scallop mixed with mayo. Some restaurant also mixed in tobiko (flying fish roe) to add texture and saltiness. I am not an expert with seafood; however, I could tell the color of the scallop was not the usual pearl/pinkish white. It was more the color of very pale salmon. Maybe it wasn’t scallop, I am not sure. Anyhow, whatever it was, it tasted fishy. Yes, it had that fishy taste when I ate it. It wasn’t every strong but it was there. And the only reason seafood tastes fishy is because it is not fresh. So the main ingredient wasn’t fresh then what about the soybean sheet? It was a yellow sheet with no taste. The color resemble cooked egg yolk, a pretty colour. Add a few cucumber strips and Chop Chop, the presentation wasn’t bad. However, the cone didn’t rolled tight enough and it took me some effort to keep all the ingredients inside the cone while I ate. I love Chop Chop but I was disappointed with the Chop Chop cone with soybean sheet. I say 6 out of 10.<br/><br/>Next up was Sushi Cake with tuna. Tenkasu (tempura bits), avocado and tuna was pressed as filling with a layer of pressed rice as crust and a layer as top to form a cake. Topping for the Sushi Cake was thousand island dressing and Oranj special sauce. The presentation was pretty good but I was not delighted to see the dressing and sauce covered sushi. The dressing and sauce wasn’t drizzled on top. It was the topping and there was a lot of topping.<br/><br/>Since there was sauce everywhere, I figured it would be a mess to pick up any piece by hand and so I used chopsticks. As an Asian, chopsticks are my best friend at dinner time. Since there was no seaweed around each piece, there was nothing to hold each layer together. As soon as I picked up a piece, half of the bottom dropped and the top almost fell over. So it ended up a mess no matter what. They could have cut the cake into bit size to avoid this problem. The larger the pieces, the more unstable of each layer and harder to pick up. Despite the messiness, I liked the Oranj special sauce which was slightly spicy and mixed well with the rice and tenkasu. I would give this 8 out of 10.<br/><br/>The food wasn’t anything too special. Service was decent. Location was good. Price was slightly expensive but I cannot complain when it is the only sushi restaurant, not counting the sushi fast food stores in the food court, in the biggest mall in Canada.<br/><br/>I won’t say it is a bad experience but I doubt that I would go back since there are other choices in town for quality Japanese food.

Okay service. The food is mediocre for its price. The appetizer came after our main and the sashimi was dull and food was not appealing. The food also took a long time to come out as well as the tables beside us also got their appetizers after their mains.

First visit. I enjoyed the free appetizer (tuna tartar) at the door but inside was nothing special. I had the deluxe sushi combo but it was not spectacular by any means. Considering the price I hoped for better than normal. Service was decent. 60%

AMAZING - Don't read the negative reviews. I've been to NUMEROUS sushi bars, and most were "so-so". We decided to go here on a Saturday afternoon, just the two of us for a late lunch/early dinner. Ordered some Sake and the salad rolls to start. The food is so amazingly fresh and very tasty! Ordered the bento box with calamari on the side, some of the best sushi I've had in Edmonton. All of the ingredients are fresh and very flavourful. Service was great - and for what we ate/drank the prices are pretty competitive. I highly recommend anyone who loves Sushi to check it out - great to see a new sushi bar in Edmonton that is serving FRESH food!
Rob Roy
Not Impressed. I have eaten at MANY Sushi Bars and this one ranks dead last....I ordered the lunch Bento Box - 15 dollars - so you would think the food would match the high cost but not so. Other places range under 15 bucks and are well worth the cost but this place is a rip off.<br/><br/>The BIGGEST disappointment was the Nigri (slice of fish over rice) the size of the fish portion was a joke - sliced thin like lunch meat!!!! There were 3 pieces total of this and all were the same thin sliced fish pieces so it was no mistake. The salad was not even fresh and ready for the garbage, and the beef was dry except for the sauce that gave it some moistness. And who ever heard that Spring Rolls are Japanese????? Why not Tempura instead of Spring Rolls as this would make more sense....I guess this place being part of a Western Food Chain pretty much sums up why it is bad.<br/><br/>I thought that this place looked like a good place to try and was i wrong - save your money and go to Mikado instead which is just up 170st near Stony Plain Road - at least you get your moneys worth. I did fill out a comment card so maybe this will give the manager some insight.

$70 bucks for nothing. I really hate going to a resturant and being served microscopic pieces of fish. It orange and brown and tried to ultra comtemporary but it was nothing but boringville from the plating to the actual flavors. I would never eat here even if it someone was paying. Not even worth wasting my 2 cents. Came there hungry and left hungry.

Never Again!. I must say this place looks trendy and the decor is all up to date and nice however, the food doesn't come close. I find the prices a bit high for the portions they offer. The food is medicore and honestly just doesn't taste good.
Nobody In Particular
Surprised and Delighted. I was shocked to see that this restaurant had such a low percentage of people who like it. I want to go as far as to say that it was one of the best sushi experiences I've had in this city.<br/><br/>It was a late Sun afternoon, so all of Bourbon Street was not busy at all including this place. It is kind of a whole in the wall. A hole in the wall with very inviting modern decor. We were seated and greeted by our server right away. She was young, friendly, and upbeat. <br/><br/>To be honest, everything on the menu seemed more expensive compared to other sushi restaurants. We started with the beef tataki and it was phenomenal! We think that Furusato has the best beef tataki we've tasted, but until now there hasn't been a place that even came close. The beef tataki here was a very close second, which is still extremely good. It came garnished with pickled red onions, pureed carrots, seaweed, green onions, and at the bottom of the bowl was ponzu. We inhaled it in record time and probably could have just eaten that for the rest of our visit.<br/><br/>Next we shared the california roll with tobiko, a spider roll, and some pieces of chop chop, salmon, and toro sushi. The sushi pieces were melt in your mouth fresh. I can say with confidence that the chop chop was the best I've had. Usually chop chop comes with this weird smell/taste, but this didn't have that at all. The rolls were also very fresh and delicious.<br/><br/>I hope that I didn't make this review sound like it was too unrealistic of an experience, because this is truly how we both felt about the food and the service.<br/><br/>Just as a quick side note, I find it very strange that a lot of the negative reviews about this restaurant are posted by individuals who have only made the one review on this site. More often than not, that usually means that person is a making a biased opinion for reasons unrelated to the actual restaurant experience.
Edfoodie
Worst experience I have ever had. Food was inedible for myself and even my boyfriend who is not fussy at all. Service was a joke.

A Hole in the Wall with Great Food!. The first time I visited this undiscovered hideaway was quite pleasant. The waitresses are as friendly as they are cute. The music selection is really enjoyable even to those who wouldn't understand a word. For those familiar with Japanese Pop one might be able to recognize songs by Tohoshinki and Shoujo Jidai (Girls' Generation)<br/><br/>The Miso soup is a great appetizer and warm-up for the main dishes. There's a wide variety of Sushi to choose from and I recommend the Chop-Chop, specifically the Chop-Chop Cones. As for a good meal with Quantity and Quality, I'd recommend the Special Lunch Meal; Lunch Bento Boxes. I suggest to order the meal with an empty stomach because it's literally loaded!<br/><br/>I really like the Sapporo beer out of the 3 selections they had. Apparently it's the best beer imported from Japan. The Hot Saki really hits the spot after a long cold day at work.

Maybe I came on a good day?. I had a friend tell me it's not a very good sushi restaraunt, but my date was curious so we decided to try it...<br/>I'm not sure whats with all the horrid reviews...I'm really quite surprised. I will agree it's not the best sushi in town but I definitely had lower expectations from what my friend was telling me...and it was better than I expected. <br/>I got one of the bento boxes which was really good! Got rolls, sushi, rice, and meats which were all tasty. My date got some california rolls and some other kind of rolls which I can't remember now, and they weren't too bad either. Yes, I agree I've eaten way better sushi but it wasnt horrible, I liked it. Service for us was just mediocore, nothing to complain about...but nothing to rave because generally these type of workers in Asian style resteraunts dont really have any idea of what customer service is. <br/>Overall, I liked it. It was a one-time thing.

Like it!. The sushi cake in this place is fantastic! I really like this creative sushi style. On the top, the fish was barbecued. The rice is crispy, and it tastes crunchy. We tried both salmon and tuna sushi cakes, both were tasty!<br/><br/>The lobster combo roll was also good. The combo includes one lobster sushi roll and a crab salad. The lobster sushi has black roe on top and lobster tempura inside. The crab salad's sauce was tasty. My friends and I really like this combination! <br/><br/>We also tried some special rolls with soybean sheet. I think the best vegetarian choice is 'vegetable lover'. The server told us the rice can be changed to brown rice. How healthy they are!<br/>This place also offers Japanese sake. My friends and I tried the Ginjo. It was good.<br/><br/>I'm a little bit surprised about the negative reviews below…it seems that my experience is a little bit different…I'm glad the West Edmonton Mall has this new sushi resturant! I will definitely take my friends go there again!

What to say....not much to say....decor was decent...I get better service at McDonalds than this place. Food was expensive compared to other Japanese restaurants and for the quality you get it's garbage. Sashimi was very thinly sliced, probably not even wider than your average thumb. Don't bother with this place, looks are deceiving. Terrible service, terrible food. Just waste of money and guarantee you'll walk out unhappy.

Went there one night, never again. Slow service, my husband's food arrived way before mine and was stale. My food arrived when my husband was almost done eating, my salmon was made from frozen fish and half the veggies in my salad were beginning to rot. I will never go there again nor recommend it to anyone.

I wasn't expecting much from this place, as I constantly passed by whenever going through bourbon street. We made a quick stop yesterday after my exam for a quick bite, only to further prove how wrong it was for us to eat there. We ordered a salmon tataki, spider maki and a chirashi bowl. Service was slow, even when the place only had 3 tables. Our salmon tataki was actually quite good, except the ponzu sauce was slightly more sour than it really should be. Salmon was nicely seared and thin cut. Our chirashi was a disappointment. A few slices of sashimi, tamago and seaweed all over the dish. The portion wasn't huge or taste-worthy, definitely not worth 23.50. Lastly, our spider roll came in the middle of our meal. presentation was good, until I saw ketchup around the roll. Totally offset the taste of soft shell crab, fooling my taste buds to think I was eating kaki fry. The roll fell apart while picking it up, not even making to my plate as its solid form. All in all, I give this place a 3/10, and I never give poor ratings to sushi restaurants. For a $60 lunch, you'd expect something more than just decor & food that fools sushi amateurs. A rip off meal indeed.

Food taste very bad. No an official Japanese restaurant . Will not come again
Good Food
Waste of money. Service is slow and bad. Food is garbage. Beef tataki is black and not fresh. Deep fried gyoza, wow. This is he worst Japanese food even in my life.

Epic sushi fail. The quality is somewhere between Tokyo Express and Kyoto, yet the prices match or exceed what you would pay at Wasabi or Mikado. <br/><br/>The gyoza was cold and the sushi rice in the rolls felt as though it had been refrigerated for a good amount of time. The tofu was 'meh' at best. The salmon skin and spider rolls were both tough and difficult to eat. Everything was garnished by plain beansprouts, which you wouldn't expect in a restaurant with this price point. My girlfriend's cup had a whole napkin wrapper in it, which everyone failed to notice. The illusion of the nice, modern looking restaurant quickly fades when you need to visit the washroom, which is actually in their sister restaurant Jungle Jims, which literally looks like an African safari. To top it off, your receipt says Tony Roma's, which is also a sister company. It just all feels like they rushed into the market just because Sushi is popular.

Wasn't even let in. The restaurant was nearly empty at 6pm on Saturday and we asked for a table. We were told that they could not seat us for at least 30 minutes since they ran out of prepared sushi. We asked if they had other stuff on their menu and said we wouldn't mind waiting, we'd just have a drink while waiting. They told us that it was restaurant policy not to let us in.<br/><br/>I asked to speak to the manager for an explanation. The head chef said that they couldn't let us in because they'd already turned away many other people. I questioned if he had any clue how to run a business.<br/><br/>We left and went to Mikado. It was very good. Drive down the street to Mikado instead of going to Oranj, You won't be disappointed.

The resto looks good but the food is a fail... we ordered the dynamite roll, special california roll, agadeshi tofu and fry oyster and nothing tastes great.. it's overpriced and the grocery sushi are more tasteful... i won't eat here again..

I must say they got some pretty good decor and the colour scheme really speaks to me. I really hate eating at a place that doesn't have a good vibe or atmosphere. <br/>This place is quite tiny actually in comparison with the other food place on BOURBON STREET. Despite how small it is I have never seen a huge line either.

The last and final thing that I had at this restaurant was their vegetable tempura. The tempura was disgusting. It was the greasiest tempura I have ever eaten in my life. Also, the vegetables were undercooked and some of the vegetables had a metal taste to them.

I always find it weird when restaurants decide to name themselves after everyday objects, but obscure the spelling to make themselves seem upscale and trendy. And that is what happened when Oranj Sushi Bar opened up in West Edmonton Mall. When I first saw the signs that a new Japanese restaurant was set to open up on Bourbon street this past holiday season, I was actually quite excited to see that another type of cuisine would be available in the mall.
