Came with two ladies from work who have been here before. They ordered several selections off the menu for us to indulge in. Really enjoyed the dim sum dumplings as I do love dim sum. They have a parking lot right next door and they take your license plate when you first enter the restaurant to register your vehicle. The parking lot isn't that big but we found it accommodating for us as it wasn't busy for an afternoon. Service was prompt and good. Enjoyed all the different menu items we tried
Tasty dim sum and speedy service made our visit to Urban China very enjoyable. Everything we picked from the carts was excellent, as was the gai lan that we ordered off of the menu.
The service was quick and responsive, while being friendly. Overall, an excellent experience.
Great dinner. Prices are alright. Friendly service. Come here for dinner quite often, but can vouch for the dim sum. Great fried rice, dumplings, lo back gao, etc.
Urban China is usually my go-to for dim sum and Chinese dinners. Price is a bit higher compared to other Chinese restaurants but their food is usually really good especially their dim sum. Service is prompt and food comes out fairly quickly. We've tried many dishes here so it's hard to give a separate description and review for each, but overall they're good in comparison to others. I would say dim sum is their highlight. Go here for dim sum. It will easily become your favourite.
Urban China Is A Great Dim Sum I Recommend To Go Here. Its A Very Nice Place And I Will Love To Come Again So Come And Enjoy A Great Dim Sum
Came in on a Friday night, to be honest, looking for dim sum. I'm not really sure what the hours they serve dim sum, I've only figured out they serve it daily.... Anyway, since there was no dim sum we got a couple beers and decided what we wanted. We ended up starting with some pork intestine as well as shrimp with chili and garlic. I cant speak for everyone, but I consider myself a fairly savvy eater and I've come to realize certain "textures" are not suitable for the north American palette. The pork intestine fell under that category. Maybe its really good, I don't know. But it certainly wasn't for me. To be fair our waitress gave me the "are you sure you want that?" look. On the other hand the shrimp were huge and full of flavor. You can tell when somebody waited until the shrimp was partially cooked then added the garlic so it didn't burn. I appreciate things like that. I cant say anything bad about them.We ordered the Chongqing style beef and were recommended a rice dish on the side. I think it was the yi ge fried rice, but I'm not 100%. The beef was spicy, hot and it came out in a big bowl smothered in dried chilies on a hidden bed of greens all boiling away in this steel bowl. The beef was absolutely amazing, easily in my top 5 favourite Chinese dishes. The rice was a very good version of fried rice, full of shrimp and scallops. Definitely enjoyed it as much as one enjoys fried rice. Overall it was a great meal, The staff are very helpful and the food is great. I'm not sure why I cant figure out when they serve dim sum, also why the parking lot asked me to "text in" my parking info(which I certainly did not do) but asides from those minimal bothers it was a great meal. Ill be back again for sure. Maybe even get lucky and stumble upon the mythical dim sum hour.

The restaurant is well taken care of, with white tablecloths, plenty of traditional decorations, and a nice, relaxing atmosphere. It’s a little classier than many of its Chinatown competitors and the price point reflects that–it’s a few dollars more per dish than restaurants like All Happy and Garden Bakery, but the food is made fresh and the service is much more attentive.
My very Vietnamese side of the family came tonight to celebrate my cousins birthday; with four tables of 8-10 people , my auntie decided on ordering separate dishes rather than going for the pre made sets. The reservation was for 7:30;but we didn't end up eating until 9...waiting for people to arrive. Service throughout the nice was quick. Always having tea and waters refilled along with changing of plates. List of dishes and my opinion below...
**I've come for dim sum a dozen times and service was always quick to get us seated. The trolleys are pretty slow to refill though depending on what time of the day you show up. I like the rice rolls and the siu mai here; the chicken feet isn't as juicy as jumbo! 😑
First dish; Tossed jelly-like pasta sheet with sauce...cold dish and was topped with fried fish cakes with imitation crab meat in the middle. Quite random and the fish cakes were warm to basically cold. I was starving by the time I actually got to taste this, so to me it tastes amazing. There's a bit of a tangy taste to it quite like the cold squid you'd get at other appetizers for the set meals. (Menu#1)
Second dish; Diced beef tenderloin with cashew, SO TENDER. The beef was so soft I barely had to chew- nice heat and the green peppers gave a nice crunch. (Menu#64)
Third dish; Sliced abalone with oyster sauce. Okay, so the most expensive thing on the menu. And it wasn't the star of the night. Though I haven't been a fan of abalone. This one was really chewy. The veggies underneath were drenched in oil as well. (Menu#26)
Fourth dish; Shark fin soup with fresh shrimp. Comparing this with the Jumbo one and I honestly really like the way Urban has the taste. Especially with the chunks of shrimp mixed in. (Menu#21)
Fifth dish; Fresh lobster with butter cream sauce with wide wonton noodles. Taste the same as jumbo. But I really didn't like that we had the wide wonton noodles over the skinny ones. This dish is by far my favorite. The cream is addictive.
Sixth dish; Fresh crab fried with duck egg yolk; I didn't like this. There's a weird crust to it...which is the egg yolk and the taste is bitter and dry. Majority of the tables ended up eating a lot of it but for the younger crowd throughout the tables, this was not a favorite. Not on menu, ask and you shall receive though!
Seventh dish; Golden Crispy Chicken, I feel like they used a sweeter soy sauce for the marinade and it made the chicken meat taste really weird. Though it was consistent with taste, I really prefer the crispy chicken at Jumbo.
Eight dish; Ling COD with onion and garlic, my dad makes this at home atleast once a week, so I didn't even touch it when this reached the table. I watched them take the spine out though and it doesn't seem as moist as my dad has it.
Ninth dish; Yi Ge fried rice-- Bombbbbbbb. Second favorite dish tonight. And I'm happy because I got to take it for left overs. The crispy toppings on top are what make the dish complete. So once placed on table get a leveled amounts of top and bottom!
NUMBER TEN- Chouzhou style needle fried noodles. Honestly, it looks like maggots or worms. But this dish is SO good. There's heat and a bit of a bite to each noodle. Must try.
🙄😅
Great place for Chinese cuisine. Food quality is very good, menu selection is great, service is fast, interior is nice, and general ambiance is comfortable. Their Deep Fried Eggplant & Chicken, Assorted Seafood Chow Mein, Deep Fried Shrimp, hot pots, deep fried ginger chicken, and seafood dishes are some of their great quality, delicious dishes. Good place to go to for dim sum. Service is fast and receptive but not as personable. Definitely one of my go-to places for Chinese food in Edmonton
A few months before the big day, we headed over to Urban China to try out a more adventurous menu than usual... we had a big group and were indecisive, so we ordered a Chinese set meal for 10 randomly off the menu. Could we read the menu? Nope! Did we have any idea what we were going to eat - nope! Was it adventurous and tasty? Yup! See full review for pics as they're not uploading today for some reason.
Consistent food quality and good service.. Fourth time I came to this restaurant and I've never been disappointed. The service was good for both dinner and lunch every time I've been there. We came for dimsum and there is always a long in but they work fast and efficiently and the wait time has never been long. Food quality is decent and most importantly it remains steady and has been good every time I've went. One of my favorite Chinese restaurants in Edmonton.
Yummy!. Urban China has the best dim sum I could find in Edmonton. However, if you're looking for fast service this isn't your place. It's always busy there but I personally think the wait is worth it.
I love this place. Pick up is great, just moved to the area. I have been trying lots of restaurants and finally found a great one the chicken fried rice is great, the garlic shrimp no shell is amazing, there is not a lot of choice for do dim sum but the menu is incredible
We did our shopping at china town then 3min drive to this place! Very good Chinese food! We had 5 items from dimsum and Singapore noodle(noddle were ok) but everything else was good!
It's our second time here..
Wonderful traditional chinese. My wife and I went to Urban China for lunch yesterday. They have dim sum, as well as two different menus, one with more traditional options that are strange to western palates, and another for us gweilo. We ordered off both menus and were very happy with the results.
We arrived at the restaurant around 2:30, our initial choice, a sushi restaurant we rarely are able to go to, being closed. Although it was at the end of the usual lunch period, the store was clean and all the tables were set. There were only a handful of other patrons there, and all were Asian (usually a good sign). The hostess seated us quickly and offered Jasmine tea. From the menus, we ordered the Yi Ge Fried rice, Chicken Hot Pot, and Stir Fried Gai Lai with garlic. As an afterthought, my wife added a small wonton soup.
The soup came first and the serving was fairly large for a 'small' soup. The broth and wontons were fairly bland, but the veggies in it were fresh. We were kinda leery on what the main course would bring, but we were not kept in suspense long.
The Ye Ge rice was fried rice with pieces of shrimp and scallops. The shellfish were seasoned perfectly and the pieces were just the right size for chopsticks (not whole, like most places serve). The rice was chewy and perfectly cooked.
The chicken hot pot was offered one of 2 ways: without bone (mostly white meat), or with bone. We went the traditional way, bone in. The bowl came sizzling to our table; the pot was loaded with chicken, whole roasted garlic cloves, quartered baby onions, green onions, and mushrooms. Absolutely delicious - just mind the bones. It was kinda like eating an unfamiliar fish, with small bones everywhere.
The stir fried Gai Lai is basically Chinese broccoli. It has the broccoli stalk, but instead of the flowery 'tree' top, it is more like spinach. The gai lai was firm and fresh, very crisp - perfectly cooked. A simple dish, very well done.
By the time we left, we were running short on time, so no desert. This was probably the best Chinese my wife and I have had in Edmonton.
Good food and fair prices. I eat here regularly whether it be dim sum or their seafood. They also gave me coupons which made me keep on returning. dim sum was both push carts and order off the sheet. lots of free parking and it was never too busy inside. the area isn't the best of edmonton as there might be bums nearby so beware.
I am very disappointed in my most recent experience here. I had a craving for dim sum, especially for those steamed egg yolk dumplings. After running errands and such we needed up going to dim sum a bit later during the day, at 3:30pm. We called urban china to ask if we were still able to order from the dim sum menu, and the lady on the phone answered that we were still able to. When we got there and order 8 doses between the two of us, the server told us that two were unavailable, and throughout the ordering continued scratching out items that we have ordered because they were not available. In the end, we got 2 items from the 8 we ordered. They failed to tell us that we would have restrictions in ordering from the dim sum menu just to get us in the door. I am unhappy and mad at their untruthfulness and because I have been a faithful customer for so long, the disappointment felt great. I hope they will make up for my unpleasant experience with great ones.
Delicious food. This is simply the premier chinese restaurant in edmonton (alberta for that matter). the best food, most professional staff! highly recommended.
Fantastic dim sum options and Peking duck! You should come before 11 for dim sum on a sunday or Saturday because it does get crowded. Their taro, pumpkin, and durian pastries are delicious. The Peking duck is wonderful as well. It's served as a three-course meal like most Peking duck. It arrived very fast and the skins are nice and crispy. The little crepes used to wrap the duck were not very fresh, and I had a feeling the cucumbers and green onions weren't freshly sliced either, but overall it was very good. The duck soup was flavorful but subdued, even though the cabbages were a bit undercooked when the soup first came to the table. I wasn't as big of a fan of the lettuce wrap, but all in all it was a great meal - worth the money.
Good Dim Sum. Overall was a pretty good place to eat at. Nice interior and the staff are friendly. The only thing I didn't like, was that I honestly didn't know who my waiter was cause he disappeared as soon as he gave me tea and so i didn't see him after that. Food was very good though. Highly recomended!
Enjoy Dim sum? This place meets the standards!
• FOOD: Food is served hot and delicious, straight from the food cart!
• PRICE: Dim Sum dishes range from $3-7. Price is pretty good, usually around $4.
• SERVICE: Service is nice and friendly, except of the lady in the front who handles the money when you check out. She is always cranky and rude. When you say "Thank you" she just gives you the best stank face, gotta love her for that! :)
• ATMOSPHERE: The interior is nice, Urban China has clean and comfortable atmosphere.
OVERALL, URBAN CHINA is a great place for Dim Sum. [ 4.5 Chewbacca Stars ]
My husband and I just ate there. It was delicious! The steamed pork dumplings were huge. All of the food we ate was amazing. We'll definitely go there again.
A bit over priced for chinatown.. Service was awful. Servers are abrupt, asking for water and hot sauces was futile. One guy looked and smelled dirty.
Room was a bit of a half ass-ed reno of the old Rosie's dinner. it looks ok but considering that it was only there for a just over a year, it already looking run down.
Dim Sum was ok. Portions are ok, There was no stand out dishes, every dim sum chef has a specialty, there was none here, everything was just standard. Prices seamed a bit much for a nothing special place. And the tea was not hot.
Dinner was good, there was some creative touches, slight changes that gave the old china town standards a bit of new life. But just like dim sum, it was a bit over priced for what you got.
Pricing at chinatown places are highly competitive, and you get what you pay for. IMO, the problem with this place is that the price dose not reflect the food/room/service. It's an ok place but I a few blocks away, there is better food for the same price or the same food for cheaper.
Went there for supper tonite, and we find it very nice, Food and service were both excellent. Freaked out part was that they have 2 small TV in the washroom which is inside the mirror. Very nice touch. Highly recommened the Peking Duck. Price is high, but Oh Well, I have paid more. Will go back for sure.
Great Peking Duck. The 3 course Beijing BBQ Duck was a delicious meal - and a big one. I'd recommend sharing this among 4 people. We experienced very good service - the staff were friendly and the food came out quickly.
Exceptional! I have never tasted such good Chinese food before. The service was very friendly and attentive. We got home with additional food for tomorrows lunch! I am definitely going there more often!
Custard Nom!. Let me start with a disclaimer that my experience with Dim Sum only consists of a few stints to Mirama, who is now closed down so I was in the market for a new fix.
That being said, I was immediately impressed as we were seated AND served immediately. It may have just been excellent timing but at least it is possible! The service remained excellent throughout the lunch, even catering to our request for a special order and delivering in excellent time.
As for the food, in most cases it compares with Mirama with a few flavorful exceptions. The taro root balls with sesame seeds was great; great sesame taste but didn't overrun the sweetness of the middle. The fried dumplings were also a hit in my book.
The steamed rice however bombed my dining experience. It was overly oily and the chicken pieces in it were as dry as cardboard. I understand serving size is limited as the rice is cooked in leaves but it seemed like a very small package to me compared to Mirama's.
The dish that stole the show and saved it from the steamed rice was the egg-custard buns. I practically moaned from the pleasure of eating one of those. Special care should be taken if you order these however, the temperature inside can be way higher then the outside and it can run down your face like napalm. Let it cool for a bit and eat top down.
Finally the special order we requested was curried squid. This was my favorite from Mirama and was a good 1:1 comparison. I have to say Urban China cooks it better, just slightly chewy on the inside edge but the rest of the squid was very tender. I had hoped the curry was a bit stronger but maybe my taste buds were still recovering from the egg-custard treat...
As for cost it is about $4 more per person then other dim sum places I've seen. If the quality of food and service remains the same (and not just a random fluke) that I have to agree it is a good value. Time will tell if this place makes my favorites list.
SO DELICIOUS!. Everything tastes like legit; Hong Kong dishes. Salty, Oily, and delicious!! If you think the service sucks at Urban China is probably because you never tried eating in Asia, no one will give you 'good' service since tipping doesn't exist there.
I give this place a thumbs up
Very Good!. Went there for dim sum today. 7 people for a total of 57 dollars. A bit expensive, but the potion of each dim sum items were huge. Also get a coupon for a 5 dollars off for your next visit, which was good. Don't be fooled by the looks of the outside. Inside is very well decorated and very fancy. Would come back to try the diner they offer in the near future. Same with the dim sum, will visit again very soon.
Joined our friends there for Dim Sum and it was good. Slightly tacky decor, and funny Cantonese variety shows on the TV, but somehow it added to the vibe.
Considering just dim sum: not bad at all.. Being from Saskatchewan, there aren't too many decent dim sum joints. And although Urban China isn't exactly Vancouver quality, they certainly do serve some very good fare.
As mentioned in another review, their golden, taro-filled, pumpkin thingies tasted delicious. On second thought, it seemed like everything on our table that was taro-related tasted excellent. The curried squid was also particularly appeasing, as the texture was not rubbery and the curry not overpowering. Without going on a rant regarding every dish, I'll just say that 80% of the dim sum tasted excellent.
Two that did not reach the standard of the others were the steamed BBQ pork buns and those white noodle rolls (filled with either BBQ pork, beef, or shrimp). The steamed buns' filling, with it's radioactive red colour, not only looked off, but tasted that way as well. The white noodle rolls lacked any real presence of meat and also had subpar taste.
Overall, besides the wait to sit down, Urban China has pretty good dim sum (I've only eaten at 3 dim sum restaurants in Calgary, so take my advice with a tsp of soy sauce). Try to avoid being seated under the "sun room/patio" section, as sound seems to reverberate and amplify itself much more than in the regular dining area. It eventually became quite distracting, as people yelled increasingly louder in order to drown out the hollering couple sitting three feet away (only thing worse would've been more steamed BBQ pork buns).
On a final note: finding parking is a pain in the hoo-ha-ha.
Group of Friends on a Sunday - Good Times. A group of six of us went for Dim Sum starting around 11:15 and ended around 2:30.
The dumplings were all very good - especially the duck ones - very yummy. We had some adventurous types at the table trying beef tripe and chicken feet. I stuck to the main stream dumplings (shrimp, pork and shrimp, etc)... The pumpkin dessert dumplings were very good.
One thing I noted with my friends was that the dim sum wasn't salty which is sometimes a problem with other dim sum places. Kudos on that.
The service was fast and furious there for a while, which was a little crazy (I think we had three servers at our table at one time all talking at the same time), but that seems pretty typical for dim sum. The decor was very nice and the staff friendly.
Overall a good lunch with the dim sum and definitely a place I would go back to.
Good dim sum. Dim sum is pretty good. The har gow and other dumplings have very good skin. The rice rolls are also very tasty, while the fung chao has an odd sour tang. They are still good, but the tang is offputting. Prices are inline with the rest of the decent dim sum places in Edmonton.
Really nice place reasonable price best Chinese food in town
Urban China offers solid Chinese cuisine and is a staple for both dim sum and sit down dinners in Edmonton. More-over, it encompasses all the fun meals and memories I have amalgamated there and, for that, I will always hold it dear and close to me.
Overall, one of the best places in the city for dim sum. The prices are a bit higher than the others, but Urban China stands above the others in terms of food and flavor.
The variety was fantastic, food was hot, and because all Dim sums still circulate on little push carts... everyone could see what they wanted to order.
Urban China is one of the best value dim sum restaurants in Downtown Edmonton. The restaurant offers a $5 off coupon after each visit that is good for 1-2 months. The place didn't seem very spacious because all of the tables were crammed right up against each other. Seating wasn't the most comfortable, but that's a common issue at many dim sum restaurants. Almost everyone ordered from the dim sum carts that came around. All of the dishes we had were quite good with decent portions. The fried sesame balls had a sweet lotus paste filling instead of the usual red bean paste. It was a nice change and I liked it, but I still think red bean goes better with the chewy sticky rice ball. The bean curd roll in soup was a bit oily, but the soup was very savoury and full of flavour. It took a while to hunt down these big and fluffy BBQ pork buns because the first round sold out. Service was spotty as in most other dim sum restaurants, but the food was not bad and prices were good with the $5 coupo
One of my top three favorite place to go to for dim sum in Edmonton and one of my favorite restaurant for Chinese food. Food is amazing. Peking duck for dinner is also really good here. Their peking duck soup is the only place where I find it very flavorful. Service is good and staff are friendly. There are plenty of free parking spots outside the restaurant (which is hard to find in downtown restaurants) as long as you register your license plate with a staff.
This is my Dim Sum place. The staff is amazingly friendly and the food ranges for excellent to unbelievably good. Go on Sunday but get there early because it's a favourite of many people. The food is always fresh and if you're looking for something special all you have to do is ask.
Urban China is one of my favorite places for dimsum on Saturday mornings. This particular time, I went for dinner and got seasonal veg, egg white rice and ginger beef. All 3 dishes were far better than average chinese food you get from elsewhere. However, the service was really terrible though I am already well aware not to expect great services from Asian restaurants :(
Been here a couple times and I would say their dim sum menu shines over their set meal menu. Good atmosphere and service as well, with dishes typically arriving in a timely manner.
This is currently my go to for dim sum, the Curry Squid is delicious. I do feel their dinner meals fall short on expectations considering the price. We ordered their Happy Meal for Four and unfortunately most of the dishes tasted quite bland (especially the shrimp/squid dish), and did not stand out when I compared them to similar dishes at other Chinese restaurants. The lobster was the only dish I thought was good. However, I will likely go again to try some of their individual dishes (as opposed to set meals), and see how that goes.
We tried some of the dim sum and two menu items... Large portions and good flavour. The room is clean and bright and the service is very good. Prices are high but the large portions explain the high prices.
food are decent and nice quiet environment but the price are very expensive. Will go back for dimsum but probably not hot dishes.
My regular dim sum spot! Lots of selection and the steamers are piping hot. Just remember there may be a wait of Saturday or Sunday for a table! Happy Eating!
