Review The Butternut Tree - Edmonton

Great service, atmosphere and experience - if you can get over the small amount and relatively subpar quality of food given the price you pay ($65-80/person and you get 1 unique item on the picture you see). The bacon muffin was very dry and crumbly and you definitely need the butter they provide. The cinnamon bun had good flavor but the texture of the dough was borderline cooked. While I liked the savory treats I wish there was more of it. I think you need to eat lunch first before coming for high tea. I've only been to art of cake for high tea so that's my bar. To be honest I would just go to Ernest at NAIT and try their Tiffin menu for $20. Yeah it's not high tea but at least you won't get to feel how I feel right now. Bummed out. :/

Michelin Chef Scott Downey and Chef de Parte made this one of the most memorable dining experiences imaginable. It was exactly what I envisioned and can not wait for the next time for them to 'create' our meals!!

The best place for a fine dining. I had a wonderful experience and got a extraordinary service. Love the oysters and beefs!

We visited for my partners birthday and could not have been more pleased. The view is amazing and the restaurant is well appointed to highlight the food. I had the tasting menu, and they had the vegetarian tasting menu an drink pairing. The wine pairings were not just amazingly well matched to the food, but also wonderful wines on their own. The service was quick, friendly, and very knowledgeable. The management checked in and was friendly and helpful. Not once did I feel imposed upon for pandemic rules, they were very friendly and helpful. The food was unbelievable, without a doubt the best meal I've had in Edmonton. Everything was prepared perfectly and the food put in amazing flavor, texture and temperature combinations in an order that reminds me of an iconic musical arrangement. The chef has worked at world-renowned Michelin 3-star restaurants, and it shows. The ingredients were fresh, bright, beautifully arranged and prepared while also being seasonal and regional. We will definitely be back, and recommend if you are considering it, that you go as well! I don't say it often, but I wouldn't change a thing if I could have! All of these people in the reviews whining about not being able to walk around and talk to people while standing without masks on are completely callous and narcissistic. Have some compassion for the people forced to work in public during "these hard times" instead of being selfish and condemning them for trying to protect themselves and other guests.

Absolutely blown away! To set the stage a bit, a friend and I were having post work drinks and trying to decide where to go for dinner – I throughout Butternut Tree having seen their food on Instagram where it looked good, but also not having an understanding of the concept. So we pop-in and start getting vibes like this is not a normal place – it did feel a wee bit judgey… but anyhow got seated and our actual server could not have been better, really top notch! This is cooking on a whole different level – I could not do justice to the quality to attempt to describe it; I will say that eating this food reminds me how technically good food can be amazing – it’s a tour de force of exquisitely thought out and prepared dishes. The way they are presented and explained to you is something I see lots of places that try and be fancy do, but really it only works when *this* much thought and care has been incorporated into the dish. We had the Tuna app, swordfish and beef in the main and bread pudding to finish the night off – it was all of the highest quality and the best preparation. All in I am kinda happy that I didn’t know what I was getting into when we walked in – it made the experience all the more amazing.

High tea honestly pretty mediocre. Focus seems to be more on things that SOUND fancy and local, but without enough concern about if flavors work together or are good. Everything was either sweet or greasy, with not enough savory/salty flavors. The scones were basically like pie crust, too fatty, and then the clotted/whipped cream on the side turned out to actually just be butter. Like, those scones don't need more fat.

Went here for my anniversary and got a free glass of bubbles and it happened to be the first time my fiancé has been in Canada, so why not take him to an all Canadian restaurant. We had the chef’s tasting menu and let me just say- WOW! This menu wowed us, opened us up to new foods and try amazing dishes. Our personal favourite was the bison tartare- it was delicious. We were very full by the end as well. We also tried two of their non alcoholic drinks and they were both different and delicious. I definitely recommend this restaurant to any couples! The customer service was amazing too.

Amazing experience at the Butternut Tree. Our table did the 7 course tasting menu and each course was better than the last. An amazing variety of Canadian fare combined with excellent service and tasty cocktails. Everything is sourced from somewhere within Canada down to the spices used. There was a little bit of everything in the tasting menu, from smoked asparagus, east coast fried oysters, halibut with ancient grains, duo of beef and everything adorned with little local gems like edible flowers, spruce tips, morel mushrooms, the list was endless. Worth every penny and definitely a fun evening out.

A beautiful new restaurant in Edmonton with an amazing open kitchen and view of the Legislature . I hope with some time and training everything gets pulled together. Our reservation was backed down 30 min to accommodate a large party - we were then seated 25 min after the new reservation time. We asked if there was a specialty cocktail while we were waiting - unfortunately the elderflower martini tasted / smelled uninviting. Cutlery was placed once we we were seated quite irregularly around the table. We were told at the bar that the kitchen was open to the public and encouraged to go and watch the chef at work, yet once we were seated and asked when would be appropriate- we were never invited into see the kitchen in operation. Now things get better- The tasting menu was wonderful. The rockfish with kelp broth and greens was absolutely outstanding. None of our party cared for the dessert. We all left the dessert basically untouched yet nobody asked if there was a problem. The chef did come out to chat with us once we asked again about seeing the kitchen. He was extremely knowledgeable and interesting to talk to about the different dishes and his changing menu. We should have asked about the dessert - perhaps a missing ingredient or something had gone wrong. I hope the Butternut Tree can iron out their service hick ups quickly as this price point ($600.00 for 4 with tax and tip) their is a short public opinion runway.

Such a great experience. Had the oysters followed by salmon. Best seafood I’ve had anywhere which is all the more shocking since we’re in landlocked Alberta. Edmonton is lucky to have a place like this. So delicious. Great work guys.

We ate at The Butternut Tree the first week it opened. The food was excellent! We tried three of the starters, two main courses and two desserts. Couldn't pick a favorite as each was so good! Our server was knowledgeable and able to explain the various ingredients in each dish and where it came from. The decor and atmosphere are very inviting and relaxing. The view is exceptional overlooking the park and river valley. We will be back next month for our anniversary dinner and can't wait.

Absolutely fantastic gem in the heart of our city. The food was inventive, exciting and thoroughly satisfying. This would be a top restaurant in any city in the world, so it's doubly thrilling that it's here in our backyard. LOVED IT. We'll be back.

Excellent space. Food needed more seasoning and our waitress was so uncomfortable it made us uncomfortable. Great presentation. Needs more liquor/wine options.

We had an amazing night here with great views, good friends, and incredible views. Our server was helpful and attentive and was a big part of making our evening so much fun. Loved the cocktails and the food and the attention to detail in our dinner - try the bannock! The local Canadian ingredients were a highlight for us.
