This vaguely flavoured animal feed suffers from obvious cost saving cut backs. The portion sizes were small. The price was high. Western ingredients pitch hit for anything that might cost a little more to import. Forget about ban chan (traditional side dishes)! The flavour itself is just bad. They must have used half a cup of corn starch to thicken up what they dare to call dak bokuem. I came for Korean food. This was not Korean and this was not food.
Good food. Environment leave a little to be desired, but if you have a group of friends it's a great place to get together. Easy to order too much food. Which isn't really a bad thing haha.
The decor is certainly dive-y but the food was pretty respectable. Our beef short ribs were tender and perfectly sweet and savoury. The jap chae was the best plate we ordered - so flavourful and piping hot. The only disappointment was the bibimbap. It lacked flavour and there was so much rice. We would have liked to see more veggies for the price. All in all, not bad, but also not the best Korean food I've had, either.
I've been wanting to try this gem in my neighbourhood for a long time and I finally did! Its right in front of my Favorite little pub, Duggans Boundary.
You can tell it gets busy because of the menu- they have pre set menu items for parties of 20+ people. A good sign right away.
I ordered the beef bul go gi, as one should at the Bul Go Gi house! I actually had to text my Korean foodie friend to ask how to eat it, because they brought me a bowl of rice, the plate of bulgogi, a spoon and some kimchi.
The beef was probably the most delicious part about the dish. Tender, perfectly cooked and so flavourful! Mixed together with a bit of kimchi, the cabbage and carrot mixture, savoury sauce =heaven. They also provide a chilled pitcher of water at every table so I was never waiting for my glass to be filled.
Service was good, food was brought out fairly quick, and the owners seem very friendly.
Don't just pass by, check it out!
We went here this evening and loved it! Compared to the almost Hipster apocalypse and high prices of Nongbu, Bul Go Gi seems to focus on 1) make tasty food, 2) give you lots of it, and 3) keep prices low. Both of us came out full (with leftovers) on some $35 and completely satisfied with our offerings. I see where some complain about the building and the lack of fancy styling, but what they lack in slick design they make up for with the things that really count in a restaurant. You might also argue that other places--such as Nongbu--make more authentic dishes with more authentic ingredients, but to be honest, flavour to me is far more important than using "North American" ingredients like celery and bell peppers.
Best Korean food I've had in Edmonton.
Typical dated restaurant that doesn't look like anything special in quite a weird area off the beaten path, but I will tell you now, it is worth it.
Sketchy building, amazing food!. Located in the middle of a residential area of Bonnie Doon, Bulgogi House looks very run down on the outside (and is actually pretty similarly old on the inside). However, what it lacks in aesthetics, it more than makes up for it in food quality and quantity! I thoroughly enjoyed my food experience here, with 6 people ending up sharing 6 dishes, meaning that each of us were stuffed and the bill coming to $20 each after tip and gst, which is affordable. Service was average, which was typical of my experiences at other Korean restaurants. All in all, I loved my visit to Bulgogi house and won't hesitate to stop by again when I'm nearby. Recommended.
Bul Gal Bee. It's very awesome !!!
HANDS DOWN BEST FOOD EVER!!!. I LOVE Bul Go Gi House. I have been coming here for 16 yrs. I have NEVER had a bad meal nor have I EVER had bad service. When I go there I eat sooo much, I feel uncomfortable. However it is so worth it cause the food is AMAZING!!!
Fantastic vietnemise restaurant much recommend it.
Good for the price. One of my fav korean place to go eat but not the best in edmonton good food for the price you pay
Come for the food not the ambience. Don't come for the atmosphere. It a weird sort of cut-up and put back together crooked house with door that really lead no where. Looks like a small town Alberta café BUT food is great. Really fresh, as they bring out the dishes as they are ready, and not all at once (which I really like but some people don't). Service was just friendly enough without being irritating (hear that chain restaurants?). Lots od selection.
One of the best. My family has been coming here for over 20 years, one of the best places in the city.
Run down but good food. Basically, don't go there for the decor: it's an old building with really old decorating and a dingy feel to it. It's clean, mind you, just old. The service isn't bad but it's extremely informal, especially when you go up to pay at the front. The food is really good, on the other hand. I usually get the bul go gi and beebimbop and it's always great. Can't comment on authenticity, but for what it is, it tastes as good as I'd expect for the price (13-15$). Don't forget to check out the strange cat illustration hanging by the cash register at the front!
Good, but not great.. Service was par for family run asian places, that is to say that its ok but unprofessional. Guys sitting around in track suits reading the paper and eating snacks until they are called upon.
Room is old and in need of a face lift. Carpet is pretty nasty.
Had the Beef short rib and chicken combo. Portion was huge for $13. I don't normally like kim chi bit this was good. Barley soup was very good. Marinated bean sprouts was refreshing. Beef was flavourful and tender. Chicken char'ed properly and not dry. Veg was cooked properly, not soggy and mushy. Rice was good, not dry or too sticky.
Everything was good, but nothing out standing.
Most definitely a must on ones itinerary list of restaurants in Edmonton. I've been going here for over 20 years and have never had a bad experience. Always good and fresh
Nice meal. Had the kimchee stew. The broth was tasty not enough pork or tofu and too much kimchee. The flavour was great service was also good. I will go back
Awesome. Been going to Bul Go Gi House for at least 12 years now and i've never ever had a bad meal. Very fast and prompt service. Excellent food. The Bul Gal Bae Ribs are fantastic.
This place has the BEST KOREAN FOOD. Had the Korean ribs with kimichi on the side, the dish was bursting with fantastic flavours. ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT! Service was friendly, atmosphere was alright. Highly recommended!
Great food, not much parking. My family went to the Bul Go Gi House on a Saturday evening, thank goodness we made a reservation ahead of time! I felt guilty walking by all those people who were waiting for a table. The restaurant was packed, which meant that there wasn't much parking, so we had to street park in the residential area and walk over. We ordered the dumplngs, bul go gi, kalbi, bi bim bap, all were pretty good, especially the kalbi. It was a bit expensive, but most of the other korean restaurants are similar in pricing, so i'd definitely return.
Love!. I absolutely love this place! The food is delicious and spicy, the portions are a good size. The service is courteous and prompt and I have absolutely no complaints. One of my favourite restaurants in this city!
Our first time here tonight & it was so good. The BBQ beef short ribs were amazing & the wonton soup was really good. Put this one on my favorites list!
Great little hole-in-the-wall!. The appearance of this restaurant might put some people off, however, the food is not to be missed! Kind of think like your eating food in your Korean grandmother's place.
Very good Korean food and the signature dish for which the restaurant was named is delicious! Plus, oh, the BBQ! Go once and you'll certainly be back!
Great place. A friend and I came here for our annual Xmas lunch. Neither of us had tried Korean food before. We each had a bowl of the wonton soup and split the chicken barbecue lunch special. Both were great, we really liked the flavours of the Korean barbecue.
Good lunch. As other diners have noted, the place is a little dingy, but I had a bowl of Ya-chae-bok-kum and it was great. A little pricey at $14, but lots of vegetables, and I like the way the rice stuck to the heated earthenware bowl and got all crunchy. Friendly waiter.
Since 1978. New friends in high school brought me along one day to this place
in 1978 - My family and I do a pilgrimage to this humble little dinner
at least once a month.
Cannot recall a lunch or dinner we didn't thoroughly enjoy in all these
years
The food was delicious and the serving sizes were plentiful. Friendly staff and family owned - highly recommend!
My Edmonton/Korean Experience. This restaurant has been a staple of my family's for about as far back as I can remember. There are some dishes that we consistently order (such as the Fried Mountain Vegetables), and others that we mix and match. Whatever we end up ordering, it's usually great.
After going vegetarian, I was a little worried about missing out on Bul-Go-Gi's food, but soon realized that there are pleantly of meat-free items to please!
I'm super exicted to try them all (along with some old favorites). A new addition to my list of "tried that" items, is the Buh-Sut-Bock-Kum (Fried black mushrooms and vegetables with sliced tofu). Delicious.
All meals are served with bean sprouts, kim chee, and white sticky rice. Load up on the kim chee if you like the heat! We usually order out, but having a meal in the restaurant with a group of people (so you can order multiple dishes to share) is a treat as well!
Sooooo good! I've been going here my whole life and I love it. I recommend deep fried vegetable and bul go gi.
Been going there for 30 years...food very consistant, love the Bul go gi, deep fried wonton and of course the kimcee and spout.
Tasty Meal. I ate here with my family. We had the korean BBQ, glass noodles and of course the kim chi. Very good place to eat if you want something different than chinese all the time. :)
Okay place.... My uncle took me to this restaurant for the first time. Well, I wasn't overly impressed by the quality of the food there, but it wasn't bad. I loved their spicy tofu soup. I sure hope it wasn't loaded with MSG though... I found some of their dishes to be overly sweet, but maybe it was just me feeling that way. Everyone around me seemed to enjoy their food. The place was always packed whenever I visited. Obviously the locals love this place. I'd visit the place again. I just can't get too enthusiastic about it. That's all.
Huge Portions for the Price!. We had the sweet and sour chicken and pork! So tasty! Its the obvious favorite. The hot and spicy beef and vegetables was excellant! Not as spicy as I was expecting! The marinated chicken was very yummy. A flavour I was not expecting!Very tasy nonetheless! My parents have been going for years and I see why! Very nice staff! Poor decor but who is worried about that when the food is that good! Will be going again!
Found this place by accident on a random drive in Edmonton. Wow! For a place in the middle of no where, this was very good. Very large restaurant and very nice staff. I would come here again.
Went there once and it was unforgettable! Would revisit again for sure :)
Wow. My first korean experience and i was blown away by the flavours. they give you so much food for your money that we had left overs the next day for lunch and it tasted even better the next day
I WISH THE BUL GO GI HOUSE WAS MY HOUSE.... This is one of my favorite places to eat in the City, and favorite Korean restaurant, the service is exceptional, with the food always coming out very quickly after its ordered. The staff are always friendly and helpful. The food is amazing… our two favorite signature dishes we get from there is the Kan-Pung-Gi - Deep-fried chicken tossed in sweet & spicy sauce, and the Bul-gal-bee Marinated barbecued beef short ribs. You can't go wrong with either or. I love the jug of ice cold water each table gets (hate always asking for more water). My only issue is that they don't have a location in every part of the city, so I could be minutes away from a Bul Go House at all times!!!
Seriously people, try the place out, you will thank me later.
Fantastic!. I was introduced to this place by a friend of mine who had spent years living in Korea. He explained that this place was as good as some of the best food he'd had while there and every time he's back in Edmonton this place is a must for him. While I don't have a lot of experience with Korean cuisine, I can now understand why he enjoys this place so much; the food really is fantastic.
Everyone notes the rough décor, the unengaged service, and difficult parking at this place. They're right, but they forgot to mention that the menu is a bit daunting too. Tonnes of options and not all of them are familiar. Don't be deterred though, frankly the food is worth it. My buddy knew exactly what he wanted and ordered for the table in Korean. We got the Jap Chae, the fried wontons, the So Tang Soo Yuk, a spicy beef dish whose name escapes me and few other dishes. Everything was amazing; fresh, hot, and served surprisingly fast, yet you could tell it didn't come off a steam tray in the back. The deep fried items weren't heavy and greasy and the sauces were light and distinct.
I'll definitely be back with friends and hopefully I can remember the names of what was ordered. I can see the potential for consistency issues here so I'll be on the lookout for them.
So Delicious. I was weary at first of this place that looks like an old house, but I am sure glad I stuck it out. Had the Bul Gal Bee steak and sweet chili chicken. The flavours were amazing and have gone back several times to get the same order!
Highly recommended.
Simply Amazing!. I have been going to Bul Go Gi House for over 25 years now, I grew up on this place basically, and I have to say the food is of most excellence. I have taken friends, relatives, boyfriends and not one has ever had a bad word to say about Bul Go Gi House the food is SIMPLY AMAZING.I wish they had more than one place in Alberta for the food. I wish they would expand on their location. it's just simply a waste to not share with the rest of the world in other locations. The service is quick, they are friendly, always have a smile on their faces no matter how busy they are and trust me sometimes you have to wait to be seated they are just that busy!
I just can't say enough about how fantastic the food and service is. The place is a little out-dated, in an older building, but I do believe they have been around now for over 40 years and it's still the original owners just been passed down to their children over the years as the retire and have moved on to different venues in their lives.
The menu is plentiful. ONE thing that might be considered a bit negative and that would be the prices they have managed to climb up quite a bit over the years, but I guess it all comes down to good food and the old saying "You get what you pay for"
I do wish they would bring their egg-rolls back on the menu they took them off a few years ago now, but they are apparently quite complex to make, but they are nothing like I have ever tasted before so light and full of flavor, so friggen good!! They do have the deep friend wonton they are so delicious however.
I make special trips to Edmonton now that I have moved from there, just 2 hours South, just to have dinner, or even lunch it's really that good! If I'm in Edmonton for other reasons like seeing family, friends, I never miss going to have my fill of Bul Go Gi House.
I recommend this place highly you have to try it at least once and I can almost guarantee once you have tried it once you will be back for seconds, thirds and so on.
5 out of 5 for me!
I have grown up with this restaurant and when I ever go there, I'm always greeted with a smile and that's just te beginning. They're food is so tasty, unique and just plain amazing. I would recommend this place to anyone, anytime!
Tasty authentic food. This is the best Korean restaurant in Edmonton! Don't be turned off by the decor, the food tastes fresh and authentic. I've tried many things on the menu and they were all delicious. The only bad part of this restaurant is how it smells like food and your clothes and hair smell like it after you leave.
Yum,yum, yum! I think this place has wonderful charm and wonderful food! Great service !
Hands-down, one of the best Korean restaurants in Edmonton. Every visit is an extreme delight, I have yet to find a bad item on the menu. Just writing and thinking about it is making me crave it!
GREAT Traditional Korean Food!. Don't let the aesthetics of the restaurant turn you off because they have some pretty good traditional korean food!
They always give you a jug of water, bean sprouts, kim chi and rice to start off with so thats nice that it comes with the meal.
I love the Korean BBQ Short ribs! They are cooked to perfection. Tender, and full of flavour. They give you nice big portions and the price is pretty decent as well. I've also had other numerous dishes like Jap Chae (Glass noodles), hot pots, chicken, seafood stir frys and everything tastes great!
have been here many times and would definately go back for many more!
My mom and dad went on their first date here over 30 years ago, and they haven't redecorated since. The food is amazing! Especially the BBQ chicken, bi bim bop, deep fried won tons and signature bulgogi. I strongly recommend take out over dining in for the best experience.
Decor is nothing to look at - but it's authentic food done well.
Mmm!. Love bul go gi, have been going since the early '90s. food has not changed. i noticed the lunch special has shrunk a wee bit, but the taste is still just as good to me! and really, for the cost of the lunch special and all that comes with it, how can one complain? the service leaves something to be desired, and i always wonder if the owners ever think about renovating it just a little... i hate the washroom, but i am not eating in it, so i highly recommend this place for good korean food! the bul gal bee is my staple.
SOOOO GOOD. I have been dining here since I was a kid & still love the food! The decor, like a lot of review say, is aged but for me, it's like going to any asian restaurant. The ribs are to die for & I can't get enough of the deep fried wontons.
The food here is authentic Korean food & is not filled to the brim with other Koreans because most are already eating it at home. I should know this because I am Korean. I don't know how to cook Korean food, so I come here to get my fill. I like the speedy service as I'm usually starving when I come here.
Here's to another 30 plus years!!!
Place looks like an old steakhouse in the most random area but don't let it's look deter you from going. Food is phenomenal and the service is amazing. One of my favourite places in this town!
Best Korean Food. I love this place. it happens to be in the area that I live and I love stopping in to bul go gi house for some tang soo hook (sweet and sour pork). The decor is a little dated but the excellent food makes up for the decor.
GREAT food. Love this place...Korean icon in Edmonton...if you want Korean food, this is the place to go. Good to order with lots of friends and a few different things, there is usually an abundance of leftovers. Food comes out so fast and service is friendly. recommend reservations for bigger parties on the weekends....
Bang for your buck. I recently went to this restaurant and I LOVED it! The portions were plentiful and the food was SO GOOD!! Plus you get an order of rice, bean sprout salad and spicy kim chee with every dish!
Their lunch specials come with a soup, kim chi, bean sprouts, and their generous lunch plate. Good amount of delicious food for around $10.
Just good. Just plain good food
Great Mountain Vegetables. Have my favorite dishes and have to force myself to order one new dish per visit. Enjoyed everything so far and this is my go to place when the craving for Korean food strikes!
Have to fight through the football players. Great food, cheap eats well worth it
Great Restaurant. Just had dinner there with a bunch of friends. It was delicious as usual and always has offered good bang for the buck. The bul go gi is a must-have and this fried chicken dish (which is to die for). I wish i remembered the dish name. haha... yummmy!! with a cold beer too!!
I love bul go go house because I am a very picky eater and I don't normaly like this type of food but the bbq chicken is really good
Excellent korean bbq! One of my favorite restuarants.
This is one of my favorite restaurants. My boyfriend and I try to go there every Saturday for lunch. Delicious food and very friendly staff.
Bul Go Gi House is located right in the heart of U of A’s campus Saint-Jean. It looks a bit run down on the outside but don’t let that deter you. The interior is clean and the space is surprisingly much bigger than one would anticipate from the outside. The restaurant was packed for a Tuesday night and seriously, I can’t say I’ve ever seen such a variety in clientele at a Korean restaurant before. I guess being open for 40+ years and being the first Korean, family run restaurant in town has its perks.
The service is decent (typical Asian style) but they are quick and friendly. I like how they bring out a jug of water right at the beginning so that you don’t have to constantly ask for more water.

Eating Is The Hard Part

Last week I opened my gmail account and found a request of sorts. It seemed Dr.CaSo was craving a bit of a food break and wondered if I’d be interested in getting together. I’m all for a night of conversation and food, and figured Friday night would be be
It's been about 2 years since we've eaten at the Bulgogi House, and the food is just as tasty and delicious now as it was before. I called for take out and everything was ready at the promised time, and it was still hot even after returning home to Fort Saskatchewan. Yes, you read that right, the food is worth the 30-40 minute drive! We always order the same dishes as we've found our favourites since we first discovered this hidden gem over 30 years ago. I have to agree with some of the other reviewers in that the portions seem a little smaller, and the prices a little higher than the last time we ate there, but I'm willing to pay a premium for constantly delicious food. We won't let another 2 years go by again before returning to the Bulgogi House.
I spend every birthday at this place for two simple reasons.
- Their food is absolutely amazing
- The staff are the friendliest and quickest I could ever ask for.
Its not an understatement to say I love the bulgogi house. They treat you like family here.
There were 6 of us and we all enjoyed the experience. Food was tasty but not spicy and I've decided that I like kimchi and that was surprising.
The portions were fine but I did notice here as well as lots of other restaurants recently seem to be putting less meat in the dishes and who can blame them.
All in all it was a good experience.
The owner Sue was an absolute gem. Had a wonderful date night with my husband eating Korean food for the first time. Looking forward to going back and trying more! Everything was delicious 😋
Amazing food and very pleasant service. Came here as my wife has loved it since she was a child.
