Review South Common - Edmonton

Alie Desrosiers
Went for Happy Hour yesterday with a friend. Place wasn't busy but you could tell it was a place that others enjoyed. Got seat right away, their menu is easy to figure out and is clearly marked what is available for Happy Hour. We both got their Aperol Crush to start along with some Shrimp Dumplings and Hot Wings. The drink was great, totally something I'd love during the summer. It's also something I could see myself making at home. The dumplings were super tasty and loved the sauces. Wings were good just right, even dipped them into the dumpling sauce and it was very good. Ordered each a spiced Rum and coke for dessert ;) Would come back again for Happy Hour.

Had a great time at Local Eatery. Went for brunch a I will highly recommended. Fast and great service if you are their early, once it started to get busy; I am afraid to say that we waited for simple stuff. Simple stuff like coffee, milk and even my bill. This would be my only complaint and to be honest the food made up for it. Give it a try! Let me know your thoughts and keep on eating. #chicosreviews76

Update: we have been back twice since..and each time is amazing!!! We were there today and Kat served us. Great service and amazing good. The atmosphere was wonderful ( we went around 1130ish). Has a pub feeling but like a nice one. Staff were 100% amazing. From the host to every waitress. Our drinks were always full. They have a wide selection of food to choose from. Seating is booths and tables. Sports playing on the TV with music that is just loud enough to hear it but you can always have a conversation. The food!!!!! The food was spot on. From presentation to taste... it had it all. The wait times were good and pricing is fair. We will be back. Portions were also really good!.

I love Local’s ambience. Chill place for a date or to have a meal with friends or family. The Mains menu could see more variety. I ordered the enchiladas with blackened chicken which was a burst of flavour…very interesting. The drunken chicken was okay. Shrimp dumplings are a good bet too. For drinks I opted for Aperol Crush, which is a perfect summer drink. Service is quick and efficient. Went on a weekday for dinner.

Great place to hang out with friends , family, or your significant other.. the food and service were fabulous. The truffle mayo is to DIE for ! Our server was awesome , very attentive, warm and friendly , went out of her way to ensure we were taken care of. She also had little scribbly notes on the bill, small gestures like that go the extra mile. Definitely recommend this place just for the food and awesome service

Decent quality food. The menu is a bit limited for entrees as half of it is taken up by brunch items that I could not order, whereas the steaks/meat dishes I would love likely go next door to Montana's if I needed to. I may try the Nachos next time to get some variety. I ended up trying their curry so that I could get away from the typical hamburgers. Good selection of beer, however. I can only assume it's a rotating seasonal selection. Different varieties and even found a sour which is a rarity for a fan of sours like myself. They didn't bring a spoon at first so I asked for one but was given a dessert spoon. Luckily the server's colleague noticed the mistake and brought me a proper dinner spoon without my asking. Full points for attention to detail. Good job.

Very good brunch. Everything was fresh and delicious. Service was quick and friendly. We had eggs Benny, fish tacos and brisket hash. Would recommend all three.

My friend and I wandered into Local because we wanted to try something different. I opted for the drunken chicken, and while it looked good, looks can be deceiving. I took one bit of the rice, and it was the worse rice I have ever eaten. It had a chemical taste to it which I could not get rid of. I turned the food back to the waitress and refused anything else. If you can't make rice properly, why would I trust anything else. The waitress was very nice and apologetic, but while good food can sometimes make up for bad service, good service can only do so much to make up for bad food.

This is definately the best place to go for a drink & a bite in Edmonton Joanna Higgins the restaurant manager is my vote for top restaurant GM in YEG and Maddy is my vote for top waitress! All the servers there are really good.. food is really good.. prices are good.. and always a good time had by all. #my-cheers

Great selection of beer. With rotating kegs. Food is excellent, menu changes slightly with the season, with continued favourites kept on. The ladies are proficient, knowledgeable and very good looking. Patio is great, the bar can be very loud, but I've never had to wait for a seat. It's a good space. Five friggin stars baby.

Love this spot. The food is consistently good and the servers are top notch. Whomever is doing the hiring definately knows how to pick them. Yesterday we had Melissa as our server and not only does she do her job extremely well she is funny, smart and we actually stayed way longer than we intended to because we were having so much fun with her. Thanks Local for your amazing staff, tasty food and let's not forget your yummy beverages.

What's not to love about my local watering hole. Everything from the food to the staff to the atmosphere is incredible!! Nothing but love for you guys. Crispy chicken sandwich is the bomb and nachos to boot.

Recently I called to see if I could reserve tables for a large group to celebrate my birthday on a Friday. I was let know they don't do reservations on the weekend but to come a bit earlier (before my guests were to arrive) and they would try to accommodate my situation. I arrived an hour earlier and they sat us at a table and slowly as some guests left, they grouped together some tables for us. In the end we had a large group of just over 20 people and the service and food were amazing!! The manager and staff were extremely helpful and went above and beyond to make my birthday run smoothly. I would absolutely recommend this location not only for the staff but the food is great. Thanks again Local!!

Food was great, Parrallel 49 on tap is a huge bonus. Plus they have Games to choose from so we hammered out a quick game of crib while we waited for our food lol Good times

The food was awesome but and we'd give higher stars but we were sorely disappointed that the happy hour deal for $2.50 tacos and $2.50 beers is no more. It was the best deal ever and we loved it as did many of our friend. We hope you bring it back!!

An old friend was driving through Edmonton so we wanted to meet up for some food. He had his dog with him and we didn't want to leave it in the car so I called and asked if the dog could sit with us outside on the deck. They said they would reserve a spot for us next to the gate so that we could tie the dog there and have it sit next to us in the open gate. When we got there, there was also a water dish waiting for the dog as well. We really appreciated this kind of service! I had the curry chicken & rice and my friend had the tacos. We both thought the food was excellent. I will eat here any chance I get!

Great food , service and drinks. My only problem with the place it's that is way too loud , you can barely have a conversation:(.

Went for brunch yesterday I had "hippie " eggs on toast with avocado. Was delicious after they redid the order without hot sauce. I don't understand this fascination with putting hot sauce on everything. It was not mentioned in the description of the item, so apparently the servers have to remember to tell everyone ordering that item that there is hot sauce on it. I don't think that is very fair to them. How about not putting it on everything you cook and put the bottle of hot sauce on the table. Hubby had a Hawaiian burger with bacon and grilled pineapple which also was loaded in hot sauce but he ate it anyway even though he said that was all he could taste. Trying to be "original " by slobbering hot sauce on everything is getting old and tiresome for people whose stomachs cannot handle it! We like all the menu items there and the house wine is good and hubby likes the assortment of beer on tap available.
Sue Catto
Great “feel” , I loved the decor and the food was amazing ! The potatoes served with the hippy breakfast were so yummy.

Stopped here for lunch yesterday, July 10th, and OMG! The food is amazing!!! Will definitely be back!!

Went last night with the boyfriend. It was a Friday night in Edmonton so it was VERY busy and VERY loud. Not going to lie, was expecting it to be slow and cold food because of it but omg. The nachos were amazing. My boyfriend had fish tacos and I had a steak sandwhich. The fish tacos were hands down the BEST. The steak was rare and juicy. On top of it all, out waitress was quick, happy and had no problem answering any questions. 10/10, will go again.

I was in town on business with a few coworkers of mine and Local was suggested by a few of them whom had frequented the restaurant previously. I was a little hesitant to try it as I felt I was just going to be walking into another Earls or whatever and really didn’t want that experience. Honestly, the second we walked up I thought to myself “this is such a cool spot!!” Local is a super cool spot with great ambiance and this amazing outdoor/indoor space. The service was great, the food did not disappoint one bit and the prices were on par for what we were ordering. I’d go back in a heart beat and wished we had one back in my home city as it’d be my new “go to” restaurant.
Jordanna
We went here Wednesday night, grabbed our own menus after 10ish mins, flagged a server down for drink service, than asked for the bill after we were nearly done our drinks because we decided to head somewhere else lol. I’m sure the food is amazing here, as I’ve heard, just need to get on hiring servers that like to serve people.

I always resort to local for the good food, reasonable prices and lively atmosphere. Service is always friendly and relaxed but can be a bit slower if there is a game or a full house but that's understandable. My favourite thing on the menu are the fish tacos and I still believe that local has the best fish tacos in the city. We also had the pulled pork poutine this visit and it was great, although I think I'd ask for no pork next time just as a personal preference. I'll be back, as always!
Emmy💕
A go-to in summer for the patio and the drinks. Wine spritzer (cheap skate) is about 4 and some change. And the ahi tuna club or ahi tuna salad are both amazing.
Anthony
Went here last Wednesday for their happy hour, $2.50 draft beer (P49 Craft Lager) and $2.50 taco... can't really beat that! If I were to go back, I would try their late night happy hour, you get a burger, bourbon and beer for $12.00! Great service and awesome food :)
Cjohnstoni
We had a great lunch with great service, thought we should try a new place and are so glad that we did! The crispy chicken sandwich was huge and packed with flavour and the wife's jalapeño Caesar salad with seared ahi tuna was awesome. Pints of beer were $4.50. We will definitely be back.
Mich
We often go here for drinks, and we really like the patio. The food, however, is mediocre. There's not a lot of options, and what they do have is just okay. We usually won't bother going to Local if we want food.<br/><br/>Update:<br/>I'm updating this because I tried their food again. I had the Caesar salad and really enjoyed it. The dressing was really flavourful! I enjoyed the twist on a normal Caesar with jalapeños and avocados. The blackened chicken was really juicy and delicious. My boyfriend had the steak sandwich and found it a bit tough, but liked the flavour. Drinks were good as always, probably would have food there again!
Patio Buzz
Windy day in Edmonton but still patio worthy! Walked in to a closed patio and they opened it for us! Sweet beer special on. Jeff ordered the tuna sandwich and loved it. Wife ordered chicken tortilla soup and found it just the right amount of spicy. Fries Dynamite! Great service! View of the parking lot offers plenty of opportunities to people watch!<br/>Good music playlist and fun atmosphere.<br/><br/>ONE CHANGE: ADD SOME MORE MEAT TO THE PATTY. (Ordered the delux burg, super tasty just not much meat)

Favorite place for our weekly office lunch.  Service is awesome and food is great (get the crispy chicken sandwich).  Love this place and try to come every single week.
Laurel Hawkswell
Wanted a very special lunch before bringing our daughter to the airport because she was moving to England. We didn't stay long enough to get water because the music was so loud that 7 of us would have had to shout to be heard. If you're sitting at a small round table with 3 people then you might be okay, other than that you'll be hooped if you want to talk to somebody other than the person beside you. How good is the food? Who knows, didn't stay long enough to find out.

I love local! Always have such a good time when I'm here and everyone is always friendly. Renee Danielle Erica and Ashley are my favourite, super nice and always smiling :)
LebHotelier
Best fish tacos in YEG hands down! Great buzzing atmosphere, also nice patio for the summer time! Service is friendly and efficient! Just need to improve bathroom cleanliness to become a 5/5
Sweetsally
Great steak sandwich and fish tacos. Yummy churros too. Service is average.

Always a good time. Good food and a good atmosphere. The servers are nice and attentive. The bathrooms and really nice and the parking was good.

My husband and I went to Local, Edmonton South a few weeks ago, then Local, DT Calgary last week. He had the Local Burger and Edmonton and Deluxe Burger in Calgary. I ordered a guacamole both times. The burgers are great in both places and we enjoyed both's atmosphere. It might be the servers we had, but I enjoyed the service in Edmonton abit more. We will definitely go to both again.
Ladyrose
Stopped in for a visit to the patio on this fabulous day. Wish I had chosen another restaurant. Service is slow, forgot drinks, did not bring our refills or second drinks. When our pitcher of mojitos arrived it came with dirty glasses, the second set of glasses were dirty as well. Had to ask again. Calamari came warm, not crispy and seemed a very small portion. Chips and guacamole were mixed at the table ( not sure I like the waitress squeezing lime with her un gloved hands on the patio at the table) and they were almost flavorless.
Steph
This place is amazing! Service is always on par when I get here, never have to wait for drinks which is awesome. Food is amazing as well. You have to try their steak sandwich (it is always cooked perfectly) and their amazing churros! This is definitely my go to place to eat!!<br/>This is their amazing fish tacos and amazing sweet potato fries!
Foodie-ness89
Decent pub food for a sports bar. Had a good selection of beer and beer specials. The service was good. Enjoyed the fish and chips, edamame and west coast chopped salad. Good place to just grab some beers with friends and catch a hockey game
Jeremy
The have a poor beer selection that's dressed up like a place that respects beer (I mean, do we really need glowing descriptions of Coors and Bud?).  We had 2 over-done and bland burgers and weak nachos with too many goopy beans.  The fries were OK.  The servers are disinterested at best.  Best line of the night was "we don't put lime wedges in our g&t because limes are too expensive."  Edmonton, you can do so much better.
Iris
Although the front of house service was very good -as well as the food- a couple of young men in the kitchen kept looking over at my friends and I and began to snicker amongst themselves. This carried through the duration of our meal. Having to deal with that throughout our dinner made the four of us feel very uncomfortable and eventually pushed us to leave. Im not sure if they were just teenage boys being boys or if they personally felt as though there was a need to be laughing at us - Either way it made our over all experience very poor. We are now hesitant to return to Local South Common because of this.
Chrysler
Yummy pub food similar to Original Joe's. Tuna Poke and the local Burger were excellent. Fries were pretty meh. Service was fine, beer specials are great. Good for a burger on the south side at a reasonable price.

Been once for a beer with a Buddy. <br/>Enjoyed the atmoshphere.<br/>Menu was decent.<br/>Food quite good.<br/>Service solid.<br/>Certainly worthy of a chance to prove themselves to everyone who's game!
Vik
Love, love, love Local! Especially Alexa A?! Best service, amazing food (and I'm a vegetarian!) and hey - cheap beer! Wouldn't pass up local for anywhere else.

Went on Thursday Night with my "Forties and Fabulous" Girls' Night group.  First impressions were that it was absolutely packed at 7:00 pm on a Thursday night and VERY loud!  The service was very fast, however, and the food was delivered very quickly.  I had the Fish and Chips and my friend Bonnie had the Seared Tuna Clubhouse and we shared some Calamari.  Many others had the burgers.  All was good.  The yam fries with the truffle lemon mayonnaise with parmesan cheese was amazing (just a $1 upgrade from the included fries).  They have $4 glasses of "mystery wine" which was just fine for $4!!  Had a great night with great company but I'm not sure that I would return here.  It was just a little too noisy for me and too hard to hear the ladies at the other end of the long booth table.
Lindsey Brooke
I've been here a few times, for dinner and just for coffee. Good service, coffee is good as well. Service was nothing special, average. I've noticed its usually always busy here
Jessetherrien
Went here for lunch with a couple of coworkers. The space is cool, decent atmosphere. <br/><br/>Sadly that's where the awesomeness ends. Service was sporadic at best. I got the fish and chips and the fish didn't taste beer battered at all. It was super soggy and greasy.<br/><br/>Apparently the fish tacos are amazing, so maybe I'll have to go back and try them. But definitely not impressed.
Cindy Orischuk
Despite what is listed on this site it is NOT gluten-free friendly. Staff try to be helpful, but not very well versed on their menu nor allergies.
Jennifer
Not For Us. My husband and I decided to check this place out Tuesday evening just after 7. The restaurant and patio were nearly full and it didn't take long for us to wonder "Why?".<br/>The menu did not appeal to us, looking for some appetizers or a light meal. We each had a chicken taco which consisted of a small chicken strip and cabbage along with an order of yam fries and a couple of pints. The chicken was delicious but perhaps a second small piece of chicken would of certainly helped. Fries were good.<br/>We were not impressed at all and were soon enough wishing we had gone to Original Joe's or Hudson's... Anywhere..<br/>The service was pretty good and the noisy crowd seemed to be loving it, just not for us.
Margie
I have always enjoyed this place! Yummy sangria pitchers and nachos!<br/>Just the service does lack most of the time, please servers don't sit with groups on men for 10 mins while your other tables are waiting on you!
Jaimee.mccracken
I never post anything about anything but this just is sad.... We have been coming to locals since it opened in south common. We go at least 2x a week. Unfortunately as of late this fall a new bar manager started and he is a complete a**hole. We recently sat down and waiting maybe 5 min and no waitress so went to the bar to order a beer while we wait and was told by the bar manager that he couldn't help us as he was "too busy and he couldn't help" then get away from the bar and put someone in there that can help! The place wasn't even half full. After our waitress passed us on to another waitress we ordered drinks, one of which was a single caesar with and asked for the garnish that comes with the house Caesar. After she brought the drinks we were told that starting "today" that the garnish would be an extra $2. Seriously that single drink cost more now than a half order of nachos. WTF, I'm just disappointed as his used to be a favourite spot for us and can see it going down hill.
Omg
Good food, decent service!. We came here for a nice dinner before catching a movie and had a great time! Our server Rachelle was friendly and attentive. Despite the restaurant being super busy, our food arrived quickly and was delicious. The burger was fantastic and the yam fries were awesome. The salad portion was a little smaller than expected for the price, but we were sharing everything so it was fine. We will definitely be back.
Carmenschutz
Side salad for $15. Just had an entree salad that they tried to space out across a full dish, but only made it half way. The chop salad is not a full salad, it is most definitly a side salad that they tried to fluff across a full entree dish. They could have put it in a side bowl and called it a side salad. Waste of time and money. I will now go to one of the surrounding restaurants to get an actual meal. Kaylee the server was actually a great server but considering this was not her fault, I will say service was the best part! Thanks local...
Vickers
Terrible Service. While the concept, the ambiance, and the food are what you would expect from a restaurant in a prairie boom town, the attitude of our server was extraordinary. A truly remarkable creature- a forehead as wide as a toaster, beady little eyes, wrapped up with disheveled clothing and an aura radiating petty self-importance and a phlegmatism that could almost be mistaken as world weariness excepting she has been maybe three places outside Edmonton in her lifetime. <br/>Such a mix of judgment and laissez faire, you would think she was the unfortunate offspring of a burnt out middle school English teacher and an unemployed artist whose talents have been mysteriously overlooked all this time. And despite fierce claims to independent thinking, I bet she still lives with them. <br/>Don't waste your time arguing with this one, just eat it the way it is, pay, and never go back.
FoodE
Better than expected. Not a bad eatery. Its part of the earls and joeys family, so if you like the food at either of those places you will probably enjoy what they have here. the food is pretty good, out of all the dishes our table ordered there were maybe two where they haven't quite figured out what they are doing, but even then they weren't terrible dishes. Price was right to, these days it seems a treat when you can get a good meal and a drink for you and your date in under $45. Speaking of drinks, the drink list here is pretty good, they have a good base selection and a number of taps that rotate out with different beers. There are a lot of bars and restaurants about Edmonton now, but not many of them have regularly changing selection. The service was fantastic, our waitress was friendly, conversational without being overbearing, and just generally exactly what you want in a server. some of our dishes were dropped as they came out of the kitchen so they covered a handful of our drinks by way of apology, and rushed replacements out of the kitchen pretty quickly. the atmosphere and vibe is pretty good, though it is just a bit too loud between the music and what the acoustics do to drown out the conversations at the other tables (which is very little). They have a shuffleboard table which I thought was amazing, I can think of literally no other place that has one, a nice departure from the pool table if you know how to play.<br/>Here's a grief I have for this place though; the location SUCKS. South Edmonton common is a terrible location for a restaurant, especially one with a focus on alcohol. Its a gross sea of parking lots yet somehow there is never any open parking spots to be found because the only way to get here is by car so everyone has to drive, its not practical to walk here regardless of where you live, and public transit to the area is poor as well. It really sucks to get to and its even worse to figure out transportation if you want to have a few drinks.

Nutritional Facts Guide. Can you please post on your website your nutritional facts guide? I am unable to find the calories of my dinner anywhere..

First time and absolutely loved. Had the heuvos rancheros and hubby had steak sandwich. Both awesome. Service was prompt and friendly. Would definitely go back.
Fred
MEh. If you want a pub that is too loud, not so great food, but a wonderful assortment of eye candy serving you...this is your place
Nata
I usually love Local, but I didn't go for a couple months, and I went there for dinner today. Did not get acknowledged for 15 minutes, so I walked out. Maybe they should have a hostess since no waitresses will even make eye contact with a female customer. Sorry if you think I won't tip you because I am a female and you are a female just looking to help the 90% population of men in the restaurant.

Not Safe for celiac. Recently diagnosed with Celiac Disease i have been trying out some of my previously favorite resurants.<br/>I love local and so does my boyfriend! But a fair WARNING to my celiac friends the "gluten-free" option has left me very ill. The server even asked if it was a preference or a allergy... Concerns me. Although the Drunken chicken was delicious i will never be returning to one of my previously favorite resturants. I think in this day and age if you can't provide "safe" gluten-free food than just don't serve it at all. Very dissapointing.
Withawye
My Go To Place. Always good food, good beer selection, good servers, a little loud but that's getting picky.
Quyen
Awe place!!! Great environment and great food! Awesome servers too
Sarah McDonald
Best fish tacos!!!!!!! Soup, drunken chicken and brunch items sooo great too.
Lynn
Drunken Chicken- just awesome!. The Drunken Chicken by far is the best thing on the menu. Carried over from OPM, it's so flavourful and delicious! Sort of a ginger taste. It's nice that it's served with bell peppers so you get some veggies too. I also really like the Edamame. Good food selection in general. And a good amount of gluten free options, including the amazing drunken chicken. Service is a bit on the slow side, but it's a pub so you're usually there to relax anyway, not rush.
Dylan Smith
Local should have stayed in Calgary, the Edmonton location sucks, servers are slow and inaccurate, the menu is minuscule compared to Calgary. I like that bars like these are coming to edmonton. Hoping for a National now.
Erin
Service is decent. Fish tacos, calamari and wings were great! Veggie burger was ok, it was lacking something. Drunken chicken was quite good too. Chili chicken was ok (way better at earls over jasmine rice... One of my favorites there). I would come back here!
RMB
Love Local! They have such great food and service and really a great atmosphere. If you go there on a Friday or Saturday you better be prepared for a wait because the rest of Edmonton loves this place and it's crazy busy but I'd wait just for the amazing food! I would definitely go back here any day. Any time I'm on the South side I want to go here!
J
Horrible service. Took just about an hour to get our food.
Kevin Fink
Unbelievable steak sandwich!!
LJ
Terrible service. Food was bland. Most of us ordered burgers, not great but not bad.<br/><br/>Went for a birthday party (8 people) and the birthday guy didn't get his food. Took a half hour to get the waitress' attention and had to tell her that he didn't get food despite a giant empty space in front of him. Other items didn't show up as well and I'm pretty sure my burger should have had lettuce and tomato on it but it ended up litterally being 'just the burger' despite my asking about lettuce and tomato.<br/><br/>Drinks were not refilled without reminders and lots of time waiting for the waitress to come back.<br/>Our party was there for an hour and 50 minutes for a meal that should have taken MAYBE an hour.<br/><br/>At the end it took the waitress 20 minutes to figure out we wanted the bill, then brought it as one. We had to ask to get it split up, then corrected 3 times moving food and drinks around.<br/><br/>At least we were able to get a discount on the birthday guy's bill since his food NEVER ARRIVED.<br/><br/>If I go again, it will not be my choice.
Foodie For Life
Consistently good. I must have been to Local at least 10 times and every time it's been good. They are reasonably priced and the everyday drink specials make it an affordable place to go with friends. Self seating works well and there are all types of seating options from large booths tucked at the back to stools at the bar and longer tables. <br/><br/>So far my favourite is the ahi tuna sandwich with a side of yam fries, they even have the best aioli (its secret is a little truffle oil). I've also tried the nachos, wings, burger, veggie burger (one of the best I've ever had), chicken sandwich and steak sandwich, none have disappointed. Even their side salad is good and a little more unusual than your average side. <br/><br/>The service does vary visit to visit but for the most part it's good. Local have got the concept right and I know I'll be coming back again and again.
Scottishhottie
50/50. Don't go to this place expecting good service. On the days I have gotten good service I was suprised. The food on the other hand is decent. My favorites are the crispy chicken burger. Done in more of a tempura style batter and complimented by the awesome fries, a must try. And the Drunken Chicken. I try to eat gluten free and this one is a regular on my list of take out!!!
Patrick Nguyen
Their burgers are top friggin' notch. Also has plenty of TVs, something I can appreciate when the game is on.
Sstyre
The service is hit and miss, we have been here half a dozen times or so now. Our favorites include the hot wings, calamari, fish and chips, burgers, huevos rancheros, chopped salad and fish tacos. Not a fan of the Caesars, they add something that reminds me of bbq sauce and it just ruins the flavor. They have a great wine and beer selection, though. Something delish for everyone.
Peter Trembley
I love this place. The staff are always amazing and treat me like gold and the atmosphere is amazing. The open walls make it nice and breezy inside on a warm day. The drunk chicken is soooo good.
Tasha
The food was awesome. Our server was amazing. Refills kept coming. Food was quick. And we got in really quick for a Saturday night at 7:00. <br/>We had the goat cheese mushroom burger, the tuna clubhouse and the gyoza appetizer. All fantastic.
Julie
Omfg. We heard this place was a hit or miss and was that ever right. We waited at the bar to get a drink and the bartender was great! Then we were told our table was ready. Then we were told "your table is around the corner" and had to find it ourselves. Lol. Then we waited for 10 minutes before we were greeted. About 10 minutes later the drinks came and we had to ASK for a menu because we still didn't have one. Another 10 minutes passed and we just left cash for the drinks and left. What a joke. Joey is next door and they are amazing every time. Save the hassle and just go there.
TCoup
Great pub food. My husband had the Deluxe burger, I had the crispy chicken sandwich. Both were enormous and delicious. Plus $4 beer... You can't beat that! Would go again.
Dschlepp
I'd go back.. We had a group of five. We ordered salt and pepper wings and nachos for appetizers. I had the Oil City Burger with Yam fries. It was all good, as was the service. I would go back if in the area.
Robin
Best Burger. This is the best VEGGIE BURGER I have ever had. It is everything you need a burger to be and then some. <br/>The staff is hit or miss here, from one extreme to the next. I find the beer menu to be good and the patrons are generally a relaxed and friendly. I love that is family friendly and the have a comfortable family seating
Jess
Okay - be careful about the burgers. Went to Local for the first time tonight with my boyfriend. I had heard good things about the burger, so we order the "press and cheese" burger. Our server was kind enough to split the burger and yam fries ($1 extra vs. regular fries) on to two plates for us, as I had mentioned we were sharing. Unfortunately, the burger was quite pink on the inside. After after asking for it to be re-fired to a well done temperature, we were told that they "cook their burgers to a medium-well temperature". I would understand cooking to anything less than well-done at a customer's request, but in light of the recent e.coli outbreaks in Edmonton, I would definitely suggest requesting a well-done burger if you try it at Local. Other than that, nothing really extraordinary stood out to me.
Skell
Awesome beer and tacos.. The only place that serves Alley Kat Aprikat on tap and thats the only way to enjoy this beer. Served up with two tacos, one fish one chicken and a half order of nachos.....Wicked place, great atmosphere and awsome patio.

Love the Music. Don't spend too much time in South Common but had the plan of going to see a movie...needed to kill some time and both the g/f & I were hungry so decided to check out Local. I originally ordered the crispy chicken sandwich...our server asked if I'd ever had it there before to which I obviously replied no. She did explain that it has quite a lot of breading on it...kind of like breaded fish. I remember a friend ordering something similar at a different restaurant and it was not very good so decided to skip that...thank you to our server ;) Changed my order to the Classic Burger with a pint of Aprikat (was on special)...the g/f ordered House-Made Organic Veggie Burger along with a Long Island Iced Tea. My meal was ok...the fries were good and while the burger was ok, it was a little overcooked to my liking. It seemed a little dry with very little flavor. My g/f really enjoyed her meal though. Was hilarious listening to the mid-late 90's music...loved it! Despite not being blown away by the food, our server was very good and the meal was enough to entice back to try it at least a second time. In case anyone from Local reads this...I'd love to see some sort of pulled pork sandwich on the menu.

We give it a -2. Today was our second time visiting Local and we WILL NEVER BE GOING BACK. We thought we would give it another shot after our first bad experience there, but today proved to be a much worse experience. Today, much like the first time, the service was horrible. I had to ask for a coffee refill three times, similar to having to ask for ketchup 3 times on our prior visit. Our server was never around and when she was billing us she was extremely disinterested. Our food took a good 35-45 minute to come out, the same as last time. When it did come out it came in spurts, my plate coming first with one eggs benny and then 3 other bennys and finally the last one, 10 minutes later. Four out of the six of us today ate the hash browns and were left with VERY upset stomachs afterwards, we think due to the amount of oil and onion/ spices they use in them. All of our eggs benedicts were cold to the touch, the same thing also happened on our last visit. The only plate worth mentioning was my steak and eggs, which while very tasty, my steak was also cold to the touch. My eggs were lukewarm, if that. My friend got 2 tomato slices for her benny and when the bill came, we saw a charge of $3.25 for them. When our server finally came around to take payment, we asked her about this and she tried to make us feel like idiots by telling us that it was a "special variety" of tomatoes and that was why they were expensive. The "special variety" was not ripe, still green, and was only two slices. We pointed this out and the server laughed at us and proceeded to take payment. As a server myself, if a customer complained about something so minute in the scheme of things I would take it off of the bill, no questions asked. Needless to say we were not impressed, will never be going back, and will be taking our business elsewhere.

Sometimes hit and miss, but mostly hit.. I've been to Local quite a few times in the past couple of years, and I've had some bad but mostly good experiences. Sure, when busy, the service can be a little slow, but that's true for any restaurant during peak hours, and I've always been apologized to when this happens. <br/><br/>One night the service was especially slow due to some staffing mishaps; first there was confusion with the hosting staff regarding seating, then there was confusion with the serving staff regarding who's section our table was in, resulting in a lengthy wait from the time my husband and I entered, to the time our order was taken. However, the manager noticed this and came over to apologize, and insisted on paying for our beers and giving us dessert on the house. We appreciated this very much, especially since we had chosen to visit on one of the busiest nights of the week (Saturday night). <br/><br/>For a sports (ish) bar in South Common, the beer selection is pretty big, and features a few local and Canadian microbreweries, which is what drew me there in the first place. The food menu is small but everything I've had off of it has been very tasty.<br/><br/>Local is part of a small but growing number of pubs and restaurants in Edmonton that serve beers outside of the 'same old same old' selection, along with some creative twists on pub grub. It's worth it to wait a while.

???. Unfocussed menu and average draft selection (although apparently not bad for yeg). Baja tacos good stuff.

Visited on Mon Oct 1st - the food and the service were excellent. I had the baja tacos (fish) and my husband had the drunken chicken - both dishes were delicious! Two thumbs up.

Rude manager - big disappointment. Came in for the very first time on Sunday. We headed to the patio and sat at an empty table that was in the shade and shortly after we ordered our drinks we decided it was a bit too cool in the shade and decided to look for a table in the sun. I got up and found the only available small table that was next to other occupied tables but for some reason this one had a tarp over it. I asked a man who appeared to be the manager if we could move there and he said “sorry it’s not open because our patio was not even really supposed to be open today”. I said “well our table is too cold over there in the shade so can we move here instead” he said “ I understand that but we don’t have enough staff working out here so you can’t sit here”. Very unaccommodating! There were other large tables that were open but it was just the two of us so I didn’t want to take up a big table and the manager didn’t even offer a solution to our issue with the table being too cold in the shade. We paid our bill and left before we even had our drinks. We'll never be back.

I went to local eatery for a quick lunch. I was there for 10min and walked out. Horrible atmosphere and the service was brutal and the manager was very unprofessional. I wouldn't recommend it. We went over to Joeys next door and had no problem. Great service and great food.

Horrid. We walked out. Went there for a late lunch on a Tuesday, it took around 40 minutes before we thought our food was coming, turns out it was not ours. The kitchen was lethargic, and I watched a bun get prepped 20 minutes before the meat was ready. Sat sauced and then the meat came out of the fryer and sat on the lettuce for 5 minutes. Glad it was not our sandwich. Would have complained but there was no way anyone could hear, the music was blaring. We told our waitress we are leaving, she said it is ok, I understand. Sadly no server should understand why someone would want to leave.

I held a customer appreciation dinner at Local for some clients ( 16 in total) on August 2nd.<br/><br/>I had made reservations a few days before and our table was promptly waiting us.<br/><br/>Our server Nicole was FANTASTIC.. She made sure all of my guests were looked after throughout our time there.. A great personality, very fun and professional .<br/><br/>We order some terrific Calamari and Nacho's to start which was awesome and not one of my guests complained about there food at all.. Each of them individually loved what they ordered and the portion sizes were great.<br/><br/>Even the manager came over and introduced himself to me and asked if all was going well which it was..<br/><br/>This is the 2nd year I have hosted a customer appreciation at Local Pub and Eatery and will continue to do so.<br/><br/>My Crispy Chicken Sandwich was so good I just had to return the following evening with my son just to have another taste, the only down fall was that Nicole's section was already full.<br/><br/>Thanks again to the staff and management<br/><br/>Scott Norris :)

Great atmosphere, ok service, and HORRIBLE food! <br/><br/>The head chef must be a smoker cause the salt is over wealming! Give me a 5L of water please!

Poor service. Had poutine(which I don't reccomend), sent it back to the kitchen twice and it came back cold both times. The server didn't do much about it. A little upsetting..

Just okay. I had a girls night here. We each had some drinks and then shared some nachos. there was nothing special about this restaurant, everything just seemed normal and okay. Nothing really stood out at all.

Impressed!. When my husband and I first moved to Edmonton we saw this restaurant next to Joey's in South Common and we thought wow big competition next door how good could it be? Well it sure fooled us the food is awesome and the atmosphere makes you feel like staying all night! We went on a Friday evening and yes it was busy, but we still found a nice place to sit and didn't have to wait in any line up as you seat yourself here. The restaurant is spacious and open and has a nice sized uncovered patio. My husband enjoyed the Seven Flavoured Beef and I had the fish and chips which we both loved. If you don't like the taste of fish you'll LOVE their fish and chips! I also ordered the Kung Fu Punch cocktail because it is served in a cute boot mug. On the menu I noticed they serve brunch on the weekends until 3pm. We wanted to try it too so we came back for breakfast the very next morning. Well, If you want a great tasting breakfast that fills you up, then come here! I very much enjoyed my eggs benedict which was served with delicious hashbrowns. It went really well with another order of Kung Fu Punch. My husband had the Steak and eggs which he doesn't normally have for a breakfast choice but he was very much impressed with his perfectly cooked steak. After enjoying our time here I would definitely pick this place over Joey's next door. I noticed on other peoples' comments about it being loud. What do you expect it's a pub, stay home if you don't like a little noise that makes you feel like you're out for a good time. It’s common food done uncommonly well, it’s a great pint, and cocktails as you like them. Enjoy! We did.

First time here, the service was okay but nothing great. Our food on the other hand was horrible, the calamari was way too salty almost couldn't eat. I got a quesadilla and it was bland, need hot sauce. Will not be coming back. Beer selection was meh better at other places.
Jay
The food was decent. The service to begin with during the lunch rush was good but as it slowed down it got worse as our server had to talk at the bar. The worst thing was that she left us with the debit/credit device for five to seven minutes while she went to serve another table. If this happens a lot I have concerns about the device being tampered with.
Miaya
Service was terrible our waitress was more interested in sitting and talking to a hot guy in a booth then checking our drinks and the fact that we waited 45 min for wings is Terrible
Laura K
It wasn't bad it's just that it wasn't great either. The salsa was served warm wothout any recognizable vegetables, and the homemade chips were greasy. The drunk chicken tastes great for the first bite then it bacomes apparent that its salty and tastes like a dish you would get from any Chinese restaurant. The test of the menu is limited in selection. The best part of the meal was the wide selection of cold beer. Atmosphere was way too loud and service friend but slow.

Great Drunken Chicken!!. I love the fact that this is one of the places i can get a great gluten free dish. The Drunken Chicken is the best and we have not went once where we did not get great service. Their burgers and fries are also great and the little buckets the fries come in is a nice touch. We have never walked away dissatisfied.

Great place to go to watch the oilers and get a high class meal. The Mediterranean Ahi Tuna Salad in GF was absolutely delicious. Hats off to the Cheff!

Second Time. I have been to Local twice now and both times have been great. <br/><br/>I went before earlier in the year in the summer time and we were able to eat on the patio. The concept of the restaurant is very cool. The service was great and also quick. I ordered a burger with a side of yam fries. I did not particularly enjoy the burger, but the yam fries and the mayo they serve with it is to die for. Great atmosphere overall. <br/><br/>I went back today and was equally impressed. The decor inside is lovely, and our server was very nice and ordered and gave us our drinks quickly. This time I ordered a crunchy chicken sandwich and a side of yam fries. Both were DELICIOUS, the food is really great, no doubt. It is very true that is is VERY loud inside, but nothing too bad for a sports place. I would recommend it, particularly in the summer because being on the patio means a much lower noise level.

Lots of beer, good food, give it a try!. The beer selection is expansive. The menu is short, but the Tuna club (ahi tuna) and Deluxe Burger are great. Served with a side of the yamiest yam fries ever. I recommend it and I'll definitely go back<br/>I'm not sure why this place has such a low % like. Maybe they had to get some kinks out? We enjoyed ourselves. We had good food and beer and fine service (a little more attention would have been better). This is a nice change from Moxies or Joeys.

Pretty good.. I had a $50 gift card to OPM before it closed, and the managers at Local gladly changed it over to the new brand, as the restaurant was still owned by the same people. I have had several dealing with LPE's management, and they have always been good to work with.<br/><br/>We decided to use the GC one Friday night. We got a table in about 20 minutes, and aside from taking forever to get the cheque, the service thereafter was good. We ordered calamari to start, and burgers. The calamari was fantastic; I don't remember much about my burger, so it couldn't have been awful. I got sweet potato fries with mine, and they were crispy without being battered.<br/><br/>The food was not revolutionary, but it was pretty solid. I doubt we'd go back for dinner, but we'll probably go back to share some calamari and have a few pints.

Best Tuna Sandwich in the World. I don't even need to write a review. Just read Erika's. The tuna sandwich is the best thing you'll ever eat and the yam fries are good, but the truffle oil mayo they come with makes them amazing. Don't even look at a menu, just go there and eat this. Then dream about it...

This place is great! The Goyza was great. The chop salad was amazing. The beer selection is large and the servers where friendly. Great service.
Amanda
I like the drunken chicken and the banana pancakes, like the interior, hate the noise level.

Supper from hell!. Went to the local eatery last Sunday - got greeted fairly quickly with a waitress asking what we would like to drink. I asked for suggestions but she really was not very helpful. Took a drink that had rum and apple/ginger ale. It was 30 degrees and the drink with ice was refreshing but not very palletable. Waitress asked if I would like another one and I said not of this kind as I did not like it that much. She commented that for someone who did not like it, I sure drank it fast!!! Then I asked about the mystery wine - she brought me a drop to taste - not a good wine. Waitress said "what do you expect for $4"<br/>I ordered a long island ice tea. This came in a highball glass. This drink is suppose to be "long"<br/>Ordered a hambuger with mushroom soup. Hardly enough soup to cover the bottom of the cup - hamburger was very well done - not something I would expect for $15.<br/>Won't be going back - this place is very over-rated and overpriced!

Noise level a deterrent. There isn't a baffle or soft spot to absorb the noise. It was a Friday night about 7:30 pm when the three of us entered the cacophonous atmosphere. We looked at each other, but decided to tough it out. <br/><br/>Seating was not an issue as there were several tables available. One of our group was convinced that they pipe in the 'white noise' of people having fun, as there was no way the 75 or so people in the restaurant could make that much noise. There was no special game on, and most were couples in groups of four. We could hardly tell what song was playing in the background, and did not hear any of the game commentary.<br/><br/>The food was no more than adequate, just the same as any other bar menu. The exception was the truffle aioli which was very tasty with the yam fries. The burgers and wings were 'pedestrian'.<br/><br/>The waitress did a fine job, however her short shorts were lost on us.<br/><br/>Once was enough.

Great gyoza, service was fast, it is loud though, and I like loud! But this was a little too loud
Randy
To loud for us.. Really enjoyed the burger as did my date but the restaurant was cold and very loud making conversation difficult. Not really sure what they are trying for.<br/>Would not return

Crappy management. Clean your taps<br/><br/>clean your hose's <br/><br/>they serve really good beer but unfortunately with taps that are not clean and hose's that run 2 the kegs not being changed they make good beer into crappy beer<br/><br/><br/>-----15 May, 2011-----<br/><br/>Lost my business make food a priority. Be quick with the food please

Best Beers on Tap in City. Not sure what to make of this place, loud music and blinding amounts of sports on multiple televisions is probably what is the turn off about this eatery. Can't really tell if they are trying to market themselves as a restopub or a sportsbar. I went there for the beer but stayed for the food. <br/><br/>Service was excellent, much better than what most establishments provide in this city.<br/> <br/>As for the food, the drunken chicken is pretty goodthey offer alot of good selection in thier good<br/>, yam fries are pretty damn good for non-battered yam fries. good slightly spicy chicken wings <br/><br/>Howe Sound Brown Ale on tap.....! if that isn't a good enough reason to go there I don't know what is.<br/>In a city starved for options for GOOD local beer on tap this place offers at least one good sessioner beer<br/><br/>UPDATE: after trying more beers on tap Hands-down the Audacious Apricot from Pyramid Brewing co. is the best beer on tap in the city, it is a really good drinkable beer.<br/><br/>This place is exactly what southside is in need of, good beer paired with a good menu and great service, hopefully it won't get worse once it's get popular.<br/><br/>UPDATE: sure enough this place has gotten busier every weekend, the EXTREMELY loud music is what makes this place unbearable. I have a really loud sound system in my car that can shatter windows, but this places crappy speakers do a way worse number on my ears. Don't even get me started on the type of random music they play.<br/><br/>Crowd that goes there is pretty varied, if you are there during an oilers game expect a lot of young women who can't handle their drinks screaming every few mins and acting lame. Overall a good place to go when the music is not cranked up.<br/><br/>UPDATE - 10:17 10/17 - This place is not cleaning their taps, it is SHAMEFUL to serve beer that good out of unclean taps.

A change, but not for the best.. Let me start off with the good things that have changed with the reinvention of OPM into LOCAL:<br/><br/>1) The decor has a very trendy industrial/rural feel too it that almost feels a little steam-punk with over sized light bulbs and exposed fixtures. The new booths are very comfy too.<br/><br/>2) Some of the servers there are fantastic.<br/><br/>3) You can still order the Seven Flavoured Beef made with Soy instead of meat.<br/><br/>4) The Veggie burger is decent, but nowhere near as good as their closet neighbours (Montana's).<br/><br/><br/><br/>Now lets discuss the downsides:<br/><br/>1) When its busy, it's *very* loud. The huge open concept without any division means you can't really get away from the blaring flat screens which inevitably have sports playing on them all the time during operating hours (because, you know, Edmonton needed _another_ sports bar).<br/><br/>2) Of all the servers I've had there (6 so far) only _1_ knew that you could order the Seven flavoured beef made with Soy, and it's not remotely indicated anywhere on the incredibly cheap menus (cheap as in a single sheet of paper that could easily be edited).<br/><br/>3) Compared to OPM there the options for vegetarians and vegans are almost non existent (and as I mentioned above, hidden).<br/><br/>4) The Kitchen is strangely accommodating and yet fickle, sometimes, to peoples dietary restrictions. For example, on one visit we were able to get a dish edited to be vegan, but on another they wouldn't change the dish for a vegan, but would change it if there was an allergy...<br/><br/>When I first reviewed OPM I was contacted by the head chef of OPM who invited me down to the restaurant personally to go over the menu and review which options were vegan or vegetarian and within a few months of that visit you could get almost any dish on the menu prepared vegan, vegetarian or gluten free. As a result of this amazing feedback we took several dozen people through their doors on a regular basis (a mandatory stop for any guests from out of town as well). Since the re-opening, however, it's a place that we *maybe* goto once a month, because really, who wants to goto a restaurant where you can only eat one dish on the menu?<br/><br/>Losing OPM was a huge disappointment and LOCAL doesn't come close to its ancestor. I'd be more than happy to make similar suggestions and recommendations for menu alterations, I just don't if/think they care anymore.

Not Impressed. Not impressed. The food seems to be average with not much selection or creativity. The drinks are surprisingly bad for an "upscale" bar. The only impressive dish was the fish and chips. The portion was huge and the fish do just right.

It's too dark and I needed the light on my iPhone to read the menu!

May be Local, but I would drive farther for something better. Our first time at Local, but maybe it will be our last. <br/><br/>We came early in the evening, around 5 pm, attempting to avoid the busy rush and ensure a nice time. There were plenty of tables to choose from, it looked not too busy. We sat down near the windows and took in the decor (interesting lights) and drink menu (extensive). It took about 10 minutes before anyone came over to take a drink order. I had the Caesar ($6) and my husband the Charlie Flint Alley Kat beer ($5.5). It took another 12 minutes for the drinks to arrive. <br/><br/>When they did arrive, this new girl announced that she was actually our server because "things have been kinda crazy so other people have been covering for me" . Okay, I don't really care who my server is as long as I get some kind of service, for all I care you guys can work as one big team, just get it done. <br/><br/>At this time we placed our order...wings ($11) to start and then the Classic burger with original fries ($14). I figured they should be able to wow us with the standard pub fare. It took a very long time for our wings to arrive, about 25 minutes. <br/><br/>We had been sitting at our table for almost an hour by now. Our drinks were empty, nobody came by to ask us about refills or even to take the empty cups away, I had asked for a glass of water twice, still no water, still no food. And no server to be found. <br/><br/>The wings did finally come, they were pretty good. Hot, crispy, and just spicy enough for my taste. We got 10 fairly large wings in our order. It comes with celery and blue chesse dip. Oh, but our celery had dirt all over it...it just hadn't been washed or prepared properly. <br/><br/>Long time later, out dinner came. The burger was really tasty. Stacked high with all the fixings and a unique spicy kind of mayo spread. It was quite nice. The fries were thin cut with skins on, they were served hot and with just a little salt. The food overall is really pretty good, and the presentation is lovely, especially for a pub. <br/><br/>We did end up talking to the evening manager. I just felt really bad walking out and not saying anything. I felt that I should probably explain to someone why I was not wanting to leave a very nice tip. I wanted to let him know about our experience. He apologized and did take the drinks and wings off our bill. <br/><br/>So, in the end we did get comped some food and drink to make up for our hour and forty minutes of let down... Was it worth it? No. I don't think that pretty good food makes up for terribly awful service. Local or not, it is worth it to drive somewhere better.

When we walked in ,we were surprised to see OPM wasn't there anymore, surprised but happy since OPM had bad service....so we thought! We sat down and in a mere 12 minutes some one greeted us and took out drink order neglecting to offer us menus. In quicksilver fashion , 11 minutes, our drinks ( water and draft beer) arrived with the long elusive menus. A quick glance around the joint revealed that it was us and roughly 6-8 other tables with a couple of patrons in each of them, hardly a semi-busy period for any restaurant. Our server came into our area on a couple occasions but neglected to acknowledge us. After about a total wait time of 34 minutes without placing our order we left money for the beer and walked out and into Joeys South Edmonton Common. Along with another couple . Who experienced the same "quality" . We Were greeted , seated and our orders taken right away. All within 8 minutes. So in closing avoid this abortion of an establishment at all costs and do yourself a favor.
