Review Cafe Blackbird - Edmonton

Pleasant surroundings, good quality and well flavoured food. Enjoyed a lovely lunch here. Original art for sale as a bonus.

Love their atmosphere, service, and food. Now it’s one of my favourite cafes.

I tell everyone I can about this place. The price point is definitely a bit high which has turned off others I've brought with me but honestly, the quality of everything you get from here is WORTH IT. It's not an everyday thing unless you can afford it but if you're a student (like myself) looking for some great, brain-fueling food this is where to find it. I've never once left unsatisfied. When anyone I bring shows me discomfort with the prices I happily grab their bill so they can focus on the fantastic food they had instead. I should also mention I've been working in the industry well over five years, so truthfully it can be difficult to consistently impress me with something like this but they seriously hit the nail on the head everytime. I also hate hollandaise sauce normally but the first time I came in the chef personally came to me to mention that they'd missed the note of no hollandaise/on the side and I didn't even know it was on there. They offered to make it right but I was happy with it the way they intended it and now I get the hollandaise everytime! Keep up the great work! ♡ I'll keep coming whenever I need a benny or want to bring someone special to a nice brunch :)

The food was tasty, the staff are friendly. 1 star lost for being somewhat overpriced. OEB provides more food at a lower price but similar quality. 1 star lost for an overwhelming smell in the cafe. Smells somewhere between chai tea and curry. We left smelling.

Exclusively delicious local food experience! The staff are patient and friendly at the busiest hour as well. The warm and cozy atmosphere in cafe will make you visit them often for sure!!

Early morning breakfast - Egg Soldiers with crispy bacon and sour dough toast. Yum! Presentation was equal to the taste or is it the others easy around? 😋

Friendly staff. Strong americano worked well with avocado benny. Outside patio surrounded by trees. Clean. Pleasant music. Friendly fellow patrons. A hidden gem.

Good quality food, a perfect place for brunch. Avocado toast is awesome

Delicious food but pricey. Brunch bowl is my favourite menu item. Staff are always friendly. We love to come here on Sunday mornings. One of the best cafes in the Glenora Crestwood area.

Wonderful service, and my chai tea latte was the absolute perfect temperature. Breakfast sandwich was also perfection. It was a wonderful stop right after a cold dog park walk, and I will certainly be back for more-it's great having a cafe with hot food options in the neighbourhood!

Edit - we were there again today (the long weekend), and Cafe Blackbird was a fantastic place to stop for lunch. It's so nice to have a place nearby where we can get reliably awesome food that's neighbourhood focused. Love it, and glad we've made this one of our "go-to" spots. :)

This is my first visit to this west end café. I had a lunch which was a vegetarian panini and coffee. It was so nice to hear that you get one free refill if you order a meal. I wish more places did that. I just had the drip coffee but they have a selection for the most discriminating coffee drinker. My panini was good and the service was very friendly. Overall it was a very satisfying lunch.

The borscht was great, the coffee and chai latte were bland! No flavour in the chai unfortunately. The staff are always very friendly and kind

I try to be generous and fair while reviewing foodie spots, so let's start with good points. Cool live music - check. Decent coffee beverages - check. Small yet interesting wine list with artisanal wines - check. Polite and friendly service - check. I guess that's it. Any time I have tried food, whether sandwiches or pastries, all tasted dry and lacking flavors. If price tags were friendly, I could probably forgive quality of food, but they are high. Overall impression: Blackbird is a good spot to enjoy morning coffee and newspapers, and that's it.

Very Poor service, poor coffee! They forgot half our order the last time we were there. it's to bad because the location is great and we need a great coffee place in our community. This however is not it 😕

As Pictured on the First Photo, the Slamon Open Sandwich. We were expecting a 'closed' sandwich, but were quite satisfied with this presentation , and the quailitiy of taste... the pickeled onions and fresh spinach make this a signature dish for the cafe

Dissapointing Coffee. Had passed by this cafe numerous times along my morning strolls and today decided to finally check it out. Tucked away in the beautiful neighborhood of Crestwood this cafe was definitely open and spacious with an inviting young lady who greeted me as I walked in. First thing that caught my eyes was the good looking food in the display case. The menu even more as it had some delicious brunch and lunch items that definitely made my mouth water. Having gone in for coffee I decided to order a cappuccino. Now I've had cappuccino's in Italy and OMG out of this world but is Italy the only place I can get my fix..? Don't have unlimited air miles unfortunately. As soon as the young lady delivered my coffee my heart sank. Is it really that IMPOSSIBLE to find in this city a place to get a cappuccino that is made properly. Italians take great pride in there coffee, these people go to cappuccino schools to perfect this work of art. A chef studies or masters the kitchen before they open up a restaurant right.? Why cant the same be done for those who open up cafes. I guess I will just have to wait till we go back to Italy to have my beloved cappuccinos. As for going back to Blackbird.....yes food menu looked great and Eggs Benny are my weakness. Will just have to go without the coffee.

Overall a very nice experience. I quite enjoyed café blackbird, the location was in a trendy little strip mall in a trendy little space with a very homie yet sophisticated feel. It kind of felt like a marriage between a wine bar and a community café. The drinks were fantastic, I went with my girl and we tried each others drinks so I got to have a taste of 4 different drink items, and they all blew my socks off. my standout favourite was the espresso martini which they have been making specially for Edmonton coffee week, but the maple whiskey hot chocolate was great to. They use iconoclast coffee, a local roaster who does pretty good work.
Prices were a bit steep though. Even excluding the specialty coffees (liquor is always expensive) it was still a little more than the going rate on drinks. And though I thought the service was fine all-in all (the owner and the barista were both very friendly) I can see what some of the other commenters are referring to when they say it was bad. See, In terms of service, Blackbird doesn't seem to have it all figured out, they push you to take a seat and wait for table service like its a sit down restaurant, that's fine, we intended on staying a while, but a walk-up counter implies a different arrangement, and on top of that hey missed out on the accompanying trappings that make the sit-down arrangement good, like asking how everything was or asking if we want anything else which they were only patchy at at best. It was like a weird hybrid between a sit-down experience and your standard café arrangement, it didn't make it unbearable but it was certainly awkward.
I feel like I would have really enjoyed this place on one of its live music nights, it has a good setup for that and the above average drink price but high quality drinks would have seemed very appropriate with a nice jazz show or a folk set.

Poor Service. I really want to like this place because it is so close to my house, but I've tried it several times and every time the service is poor. Each time I visited here I had to go find someone to take my order. Sometimes there are a few people behind the counter, but they are too busy cleaning to notice any customers. Last time, after I finally got the attention of someone behind the counter, she told me they were having "table service" and I should go sit down and a waitress would come. We'd already been there for 20 minutes, and if a waitress had come, I would have gladly ordered from her. After I ordered, and my food was delivered, the waitress never came back. I would have liked some dessert and a beer, but there was no one to order from.

If I can't even make my order, it doesn't matter if the food is good or not. I will not be returning.

Nice neighbourhood cafe. It a nice neighbourhood restaurant. Good to go for coffee/ snack Would i go back? Hmm.. maybe for coffee to meet up with friends around the area. The flatbread is a good deal though - good portion for lunch.

Lisa. I found it to be more cluttered with tables than Jeffrey's was. Sofa setting is gone. Less comfortable all round.

Feiendly people and good lunches.. I've been to Cafe Blackbird only twice and each time I've had their soup and delicious sandwiches. The Borscht was excellent and the sandwich superb. Also my coffee was made to order and served with a friendly smile. I'll be back to try more of their soups. Perhaps I'll even try the BLACKBIRD PIE. That sounds very interesting even though there's no meat in it. Try this restaurant. I think you'll like it. sky

Cafe Blackbird is a great spot in the Crestwood community and I'm sure the local residents are loving it! They offer comforting cafe fare, and support local producers at the same time. Brunch is available on weekends, and tapas are available in the evenings from 5pm til close. They even have some wines for you to indulge in! I'd love to have a locally owned cafe like this near my home - those of you in the west end are lucky.

Situated right in the Groot Dermatology strip mall, you're greeted by delicious savory smells and the aromatic scent of coffee when you walk in. Regulars make a beeline for "their" tables, while the rest of us meander to find a table with the winter sunlight filtering in through the front windows, brightening up the warm neutral tones of of the café. We warmed up with a Chai Latte - nicely made with Cally's tea, a bit of creamy froth and tasting of cinnamon, ginger, cardamom and maybe cloves in there.. mmmm. My fiancé had the London Fog (no pic cuz I think my phone ate it) which had nice vanilla-y notes and warmed us up. Our accountant beat us to the cafe and was sipping away at a diet coke. We got the munchies, so I ordered a gigantic Croque Monsieur , which we asked to cut up into four small pieces (its basically the size of 2 sandwiches in one). Its a simple toasted sandwich of Cob's bread, cheese and ham.. and it totally hits the spot with savory ooey gooey cheesey happiness. It could have used a bit more tiem getting toasted so all the cheese melts, but not complaining!
