Review Vi's For Pies - Edmonton

Went for the first time today. Very friendly staff and local cafe atmosphere. The Creamy Chicken Barley soup was do die for. My Chicken Sandwich had a soft bun, fresh crisp vegetables and creamy dill sauce. The portion size and quality of food exceeded the price point. Got a piece of Blueberry/Strawberry Crumble cake to try later. Will definitely visit again!

I go to this great landmark restaurant at least twice a week and am never disappointed. One of only a few now still requiring proof of vaccination and that makes me very happy! The special each day is a delectable choice of usually a rice or noodle dish prepared by skilled chef(s). Salads and two different soups each day are fantastic especially accompanied by a house specialty whole grain bun. And the desserts are lavishly and spectacularly delicious; so large that most are shareable. Vi’s also has a good selection of fine wines and other specialty beverages. Servers are very friendly, knowledgeable, and attentive to detail. Please support local business by visiting this Glenora restaurant with a reputation for excellent quality and service.

I tried the key lime pie and found it to be smooth, creamy and cool. Yum! I would love to come back to try the savoury menu. Love the vibe of this place. Please open one on the south side!

Good services and delicious pies. Very comfy inside. I love both shepherd's and chicken pies, but their cakes are yummy too! Highly recommended!

Good value for the meal! The staff are friendly and the place has a comfy cafe feel with a beautiful patio option! Looking forward to visiting again, and taking a whole pie home !

It’s been awhile since I’ve eaten or had dessert here. Went in today and purchased a piece of chocolate and caramel cake to take home. It tastes even better than I remember! Decadent, rich, flavourful, and you can tell that they use quality ingredients. I ate about half the slice and will eat the rest tomorrow (that is, if I don’t wake-up in the middle of the night and devour it lol). A wonderful treat! Next on the list, the Oreo cheesecake!

I just finished a fantastic lunch here. Service and food were excellent. Prices are very reasonable and the quality of the food was great. We had brisket and ribs. Sides were soup, slaw, and biscuit. Amazing. Atmosphere is casual, the light in the afternoon was lovely. Not pretentious, this is a comfortable, “everything made in house” neighbourhood gem. Almost like a bistro atmosphere with excellent comfort food. Of course we got pie to go!

We ordered a big order of assorted pies for a work function. Vi's made an amazing assortment. So many happy people raving about the pies. Deep, flavorful and amazing crust. Will have to go visit and try more food. Thank you for helping make our day so yummy.

Our first server was a really sweet young guy. Patient with us taking a long time with menu. Thought is was weird that they bring over a giant chalk board instead of menus. The food was actually ok. Hummus platter was lovely, maybe a tad salty on the hummus. Spanakopita tasted a bit Herby but the phyllo was perfect. I also had a small bowl of soup. My biggest complaint was out total was 60$. For soup, hummus and a small spanakopita, two coffees and shared one piece of cheesecake. To be fair the hummus platter was large and beautiful but it still seemed a little much. The other thing that made me feel obligated to give a poor review was the attitude of the server that ended up talking over for ours. I saw her turn away a customer because she " didn't want to waster her float on one piece of pie" and she yelled across the restaurant if anyone had change. Noone responded so the customer (young mom with toddler) just left. Then she was talking loudly about how it was dead and sold out of dessert so she "didn't care" what the owners thought if she closed early without telling them. Just thought she spoke a little harshly and unprofessionally. At the end of the day, the cheesecake was lovely and I would come back for dessert but not a meal.

The brisket on the caramelized onion bagel. The brisket was so soft and with the sweet bagel. What a delight. Finished with a piece of flapper pie. What a great place!

The roasted chicken sandwich was so disappointing for 11$. The bun was old and dry as well as the tomatoes tasted old and pulled from the cooler. The chicken was ice cold as well. I’ve had better airplane food. I will never return. Soup was fantastic.

Best pies in YEG!
Great place to stop for a slice of pie and hot beverage. Take-out order is wonderful and the staff are so friendly.
Must try!

We ordered all of the cakes for our wedding from Vi's for Pies. We picked an assortment of regular cakes and cheesecakes. They looked beautiful and our guests loved them!

I have enjoyed Vi's in the past, but on June 30, 2017, I arrived with three other people at 9:45 pm. They were open until 11:00 pm and suddenly made the decision to "close early for Canada Day". Nothing on the door and we felt uncomfortable as some blonde girl said "yeah we are closing early, but you're here so I guess it's ok". After we were "lucky" enough make the cut, 2 groups were turned away. During our time, the whole kitchen staff sat out near the till, and our server kept coming back to fill our waters. Pies were predictably delicious. We felt so awkward like we were intruding.

Look - businesses close early. But if you dropped the ball and have nothing posted on your door I don't want to hear anything about TIME especially if I come 75 minutes before closing!

Sad to say I don't return to restaurants when I feel like an inconvenience to the establishment taking my money.
Laura
Good food, and a nice atmosphere (great little patio) the only issue I have is that the crust on their cheesecake is always too salty. I've talked about it with a friend who agrees, so it's not all in my head, but folks who love salt may not notice/care. Great BBQ and fantastic thick slices of cheese on their sandwiches with a fantastic spread.

Cute place for a quiet date night
We came on a rainy night but there was something romantic about having pie/cake and milk near a window

Hubby had berry pie a la mode and I had German chocolate cake; servings are great and staff do not pressure you to finish your dessert quickly

Patio is cute with lanterns and foliage and I'm aiming to sit outside next visit on a cool summer night !

VI'S FOR PIES. Do you know this place? I went there in the past. Food is reasonable, but service is bad. I mean, bad! Recently my son was there and was served a sour, dry and hard cheesecake. Talking with the manager about it, she basically did not care, did not apologize and said that "nobody complained before" (??). Since my son had eaten portion of the pie she "couldn't replace it, but she could give a discount (!) - which was $70 cents (what a joke!). She was rude, prepotent and no-professional. Any decent business care about their clients and quality of products and service, it is crucial, vital, unquestionable. What a shame for our city to have a business like that.

This really isn't a full review per se as I have yet to actually sit down and dine but getting some pie to go is enough to warrant a review. Me and my girlfriend got their Lemon Raspberry and Strawberry Creme to go. The Lemon Raspberry has a nice blend of lemon flavour and raspberry without being too sweet. My Strawberry pie was filled with strawberries and I love the crust when you mix it was with Creme on top. Everything is home made of course but the price is a little steep in my opinion. Both slices of pie came out to just under $15. For almost $7+ dollars for a slice of pie it better be the most amazing slice of pie I ever had in my life. But it wasn't, it was good but no where near amazing. I'd rather go to Duchess or Cobbs Bakery instead. Or better yet head to any grocery store and pickup a whole pie for yourself.

I enjoyed the chicken pot pie and was very impressed with the deserts. My only suggestion would be to add a little love to the salad side, but regardless very fresh and tasty still!

I've always loved coming here since I was in Jr. High 8 years ago! Been coming back ever since. I will attest to the fact that the service could always use some improvement (servers at points are great at the disappearing act) but the food has always been fantastic! Veggie lasagna will always be my fave! Not a dessert person but if they have their Nanaimo Bars I always get one! It's a must try if you're not too uptight about the service aspect of eating out 😝

Lived literally beside this restaurant for 20 years of my life and have never had a bad experience, homemade food and desserts a definite favorite is Keylime pie and Carmel bars

This is a hidden gem for Edmonton. Period.

Vi's is one of our favourites for date night. It is small and relatively intimate. There is a beautiful patio for when weather permits and a fireplace inside for winter.

The daily menu is brought to your table as a chalkboard on an easel. They generally have a selection of comfort food all year round, and barbeque in the summer months.

We have never been disappointed with the soups. They are always flavourful and hit the spot every time. They always use really good ingredients for everything on the menu. You will never leave hungry!

Vi's, as the name suggests, is famous for the desserts. The selection is always different. Cheesecakes, tortes, pies, squares etc. There hasn't been anything that we have tried yet that we haven't enjoyed.

They also sell the cakes etc whole to take home, but I suggest you call ahead, as you never know what will be in the case.

Vi's is such a quality go to lunch spot, from a great place to take a date or a friend. My go to is the chicken pot pie with a salad and their amazing homemade fill dressing. Make sure you save room for dessert as the name holds true.
Nicola
I frequently introduce people to this restaurant and whether they be new to town or tried and true Edmontonians, everyone raves about how much they love this gem of a place and how they want to come back soon.
BananaRocket
Great Pies and Cakes, very uncomfortable chairs.

We live in the burbs and once in awhile we drove in to pick up deserts from Vis. They are one of the few bakers at open later than 5 or 6.

We always just get takeout. The tables are smallish, the chairs are wood with no padding and the service is not very good. BUT, the carrot cake is great!

One of my fav cafés in Edmonton! I've been coming here ever since I was a kid. I've had their ham and swiss sandwich countless times, and it's always delicious and fresh. I also love their chicken pot pie and shepherd's pie. And of course, no trip to Vi's is complete without some pastry... the carrot cake is to die for!!!
Heidi Rapanos
Great homemade soups! One of my favorite lunch places with my girlfriends💖Enjoy their desserts after or take dessert home for later👍It can be quite busy at lunch so come early

Jade
The service was quick and friendly. The food and desserts were truly scrumptious! And the ambiance was cozy. I will definitely be back soon!
Dee
I always like dropping in for the cheesecake. They always have a variety to choose from. Like to meet friends for dinner as well they always have nice specials.
Allaria
I don't really have a sweet tooth but this place has a large varieties of cakes, pies and cheesecakes. Besides the desserts, they also have a delicious regular menu for those of you who want to grab lunch or dinner. I would recommend the shepard's pie. The line up can be quite long at times but is well worth it.

Good food!. I visited Vi's for Pies for the first time tonight, and I thought it was a nice place to eat. It's small, so you need to be careful about going during the dinner rush. The diner menu is written on large easels that they bring to your table, which is interesting. We had the Chicken Pot Pie and the BBQ Briquette. Both were really good! For dessert we had the Strawberry Shortcake and Chocolate Fudge Cake. Yum! The service was good. Everyone working there was really nice and friendly.
Earth2bella
Love it!. I used to eat here almost every evening when I lived in the area. Beef brisket with baked beans and coleslaw wad my favourite. Their key Lome pie is to die for.
Facebook User
Surprised. A nice little hide away. Menu is written on big boards. Decent food. Will have to go back and actually try the pie.

Come for the dessert leave for the service. If you are doing take out this place is the best, desserts and key line pie are by far the best in edmonton
But to sit in and done I would not recommend

Service has taken a real turn for the worse :(. I had read some recent reviews about this very issue, but given that I've had really good experiences with Vi's For Pies in the past, I didn't want to believe that these reviews were accurate. Unfortunately, I was just there (Saturday Feb. 21) and was shocked by the attitude that we were given by the server.

He didn't even say 'Hello' or 'Welcome' but just barked 'food or dessert' at us after we sat ourselves. I replied with dessert and he told us to go order at the front and promptly left. Beyond that, he came by once with an equally short interaction which was the end of any sort of service he was providing us that day. I felt obligated to leave a typical tip, but I truly feel he didn't do a single thing to warrant one cent of it.

I was very disappointed in the service we received from this man on Saturday, especially since the food was great, as always. It's a shame that the good quality of the food will now be overshadowed in my memory by this unfriendly server. If I have a craving for pie from this place in the future (and haven't decided to go somewhere else instead), maybe I'll just pick it up to go :/
Tasty Feasts
I used to live just a few blocks away and Vi's was a favourite. Love their cheesecakes, selection, veggie lasagna and in house buns!

Really good food, better service. I went in today because my gf requested a vi's key lime pie for after her surgery. The girls told me that I have to order a pie 2 days in advance but they had 1 pie and would make a special exception for us. I can't tell you how much I appreciated that. Class A establishment.

Too much for too little. I went here for lunch with a large group of people and we ordered our meals a few days ahead of time. I had the chicken cordon bleu, which was okay, nothing terrible, but not spectacular. It came with mashed potatoes, but they were instant potatoes, and a cheap kind of instant potatoes, and they were a little cold. And the salad left something to be desired, 2 slices of tomato and a couple lettuce leaves. Because we were in such a big group the tip was automatically added on. So in all I paid $20 for a mediocre lunch. Definitely adding this to the "don't waste my money" list of restaurants
Heidi
I didn't know pie could taste so good. I'm not one to be easily impressed by desserts. I'm a good baker, so usually I end up working out in my head how much cheaper I could've made it at home rather than just enjoying myself. This was definitely an exception! I went for date night with my hubby, he got the apple pie and I got the caramel chocolate cake, both with ice cream. The apple pie was amazing. Crust was flaky and light, apples were sweet, and the spice blend was amazing. He likes my pies but happily conceded that this was better. The chocolate cake slice was HUGE and very rich so I couldn't finish it, but tasted amazing. I love chocolate but find chocolate cake to be hit and miss - this was definitely a hit! Great depth of flavor and the caramel layers were delicious. We estimated the bill before it came, figuring it'd be at least $20 due to the quality and the added ice cream. We were pleasantly surprised with the $15 damage. Hubby has already got it in his calendar that we're coming back for his birthday, 9 months from now!

Even though they have a decent line of pies and cakes, I simply cannot recommend this place. Service is REALLY bad!!!...!!!...!!!...!!!...!!!

Stingy Portions for Desserts. While passing by this place every day to downtown and back, my husband and I decided to stop by. We picked a Chocolate cake which was a visual delight, tall, magnificent and tempting. We paid about 8 dollars and expected a decent portion. However when I opened the box I saw a teeny slice. First I thought that they made a mistake for 8 bucks the portion size was pretty bad. I went back to check with the server, brushing aside my husbands embarrassment for wanting to talk about it. They confirmed that that was a regular portion. Now about the taste, I liked the icing it was chocolate but nothing extraordinary, the cake had very little icing compared to the thick plain chocolate cake layers they were sandwiched in. I just ate the icing as the cake was too chalky and dense and not so moist. I will never go back not even to try other stuff. And do not recommend anyone to go there. I would go to Duchess bakery instead!!

Poor Complaint Management. My wife and I have dined at Vi’s for Pies on several occasions and normally enjoy the food and usually the service.

While substituting a thimble-sized soup serving over a salad will run you close to $4.00 we’ve never had any real complaints until last night, September 3, 2014.

On the evening of September 3, we both enjoyed our meals at Vi’s for Pies and then decided to purchase desserts to take home. That was a mistake.

Upon arriving at home we could not believe the miniscule size of the Carrot Cake we purchased for $7.00. It was not even a full-sized piece. To show the relative size pictures of the cake were taken with a twenty-five cent piece.

Sadly the experience does not stop there.

We decided to place a complaint on Vi’s for Pies Facebook page, with the picture mentioned above showing how small the piece of cake was. The complaint was however promptly removed by Vi’s Management, and further posting by myself or my wife to their Facebook page has been blocked.

We’ve not received any communication from Vi’s for Pies, even though it would have taken about as long to address the issue as to delete our comment and change their Facebook configurations to prevent further posts.

Apparently Vi’s for Pies Management has decided that censoring any sort of negative feedback is more important than actually addressing it.

Therefore, we have decided to post in this forum, and hope that Vi’s for Pies Management will actually choose to respond to the complaint, since they can’t delete it here.

I hope that this seriously inappropriate customer service attitude by Vi’s for Pies is a one off event, and not indicative of Vi’s for Pies being a generally poor Corporate Citizen overall.

If you do purchase a dessert here for takeaway make sure you check the size before paying.

AMAZING. Had a piece of pie there and took a piece of cheesecake home because I actually could not decide on just one dessert! The service was so fabulous and the atmosphere even better. We sat on the patio as it was so warm out and I could picture myself there for hours with a book. This place has the trio of excellence - good service, good food, and good location. Great place to go!

We stopped in while out on a drive through town and it was fantastic! We dessert which just slammed our taste buds! While there we saw many other meals going to other tables and wow! We will be back for supper!

A great little place. This is a cute little restaurant that I've been to on a number of occasions for lunch. The food is always tasty and there is a fair bit of unique variety on the lunch menus. Dessert is always good, regardless of what I've ordered.

The highlight here is the outdoor seating area in the summer time. Would recommend.

After several years back on assignment in Edmonton. Saturday on my way to the Museum of Alberta to get culture and out of the cold I stopped at Vi's Pies intersection of 135 and Stony Plain. The same warm welcome, spectacular food sampling and omg desert big enough to share. But I was alone this time. The spousal unit was home in Leucadia Calif. Linda and I have fond memories of Vi's. This is a must find for culinary cultured who like a fast food price.

Chicken Salad Over Pies. When I was in junior high I'd run just a couple blocks in the worst weather (-30/pouring rain) just to get a vanilla steamed milk and a chicken salad sandwich. It is seriously the BEST CHICKEN SALAD SANDWICH i have ever had in my life. Go ahead, get one and see for yourself. Just don't mind the staff, they can be quite snappy... or it could have been that i was just a kid at the time, but either way. still worth it
Foodie89
Good place to eat. I love the cozy atmosphere and their amazing Shepards Pie! It's a good place to have lunch or dinner with a few friends in an intimate setting. The dessert portions are always generous enough to share!!
Rhonda
Disappointed, waited over 10 mins to be acknowledged at our table for water. the first server was really nice but there was a second floating around and when she poured my friends water the water jug touched our hummas. I would of said something but seeing as the humas lacked any flavor we left it. We tried some cheese cakes and honestly very disappointed. Cheesecake is our favorite dessert and it was extremely thick to the point it was un enjoyable and had very little flavor. I was looking forward to going there but was let down. There was 20 mins left til closing and we felt very pressured to leave, they cranked the music up very load and there was only 3 people in there and were added chairs to our table. Wouldn't go back.

Great food, and delightful atmosphere!. I've been going to Vi's for many years now, and have to say that this remains a favorite bistro of ours! The service is always prompt and friendly, and the food has remained consistently good over the years.
I would recommend any of the desserts, but my personal favourite is the chocolate caramel cake! For a relaxed afternoon or evening dining experience, you won't go wrong with this uniquely Edmontonian institution!

Best West End Bistro. Vi's for Pies is definitely the best café style restaurant in Edmonton's west end. The food is consistently superior and the cakes and pies are to die for. Always fresh and flavorful. From manager to servers to counter staff, everyone makes you feel like family. The service is professional, courteous and quick -- always with a smile. Love the patio in the summer and the fireplace in the winter. Coziest spot for a meal with a glass of wine or super cake with coffee.
Christinaellen.h
The cake IS a lie. I ordered the chicken curry risotto which was on special (for a whopping $14.95 ... not very special sounding to me). I waited about 10 minutes after everyone else had gotten their food before mine came out. It was not risotto at all; just a mush of rice and sauce, with some mixed peas and carrots. Either they don't know how to cook risotto properly, or they forgot about it and decided to still serve it.

The flavour was okay, a typical chicken curry sauce, and the portion was large, so there's that.

My husband got the blueberry pie, with no option of getting it heated up. It came on a small plate with two scoops of ice cream so he felt bad and didn't want to ask for it heated. The pie was nothing special and the crust was extremely thick and not flaky.

My friend at the table got the carrot cake and let me try some. It deceivingly looked delicious. It was dry and stale, and there was hardly any flavour to it.

Before we were even done eating our desserts, we could tell that they were trying to rush us out of the establishment earlier than expected because they impromptu decided to close early because they had a slow day.

Overall, the dining experience was lacking, and the "to-die-for" desserts were less than satisfactory and I would not recommend eating here, or even stopping for what appears to be "freshly baked" cake or pie.
Millerwa
Good but could be great. Pie crust was a bit of a disappointment. I have been making pie for years and the crust did not taste rich and flakey rather soggy and tough. It could be inexpensive ingredients. chicken pie was good. Again it was good because you did not use your crust. You need a new recipe or better methods to work the pastry. Perhaps both.
Carrie
Yummy!. We went for coffee and Key Lime Pie last week.
Every time we go we get the Key Lime Pie. Because, it's brilliant! It's literally the very best I've ever tasted! Bravo!
Dishn'-it-out
Dessert!!. This is the place to go for dessert and a cup of tea or coffee. The desserts are some of the best around and if you can get a seat on the patio on a nice sunny day it makes your visit that much more worthwhile. There is a very simple menu on their board that they bring to the table and specials that they have. The food is pretty good also, but hey,...when you've got that showcase of desserts staring at you in the face it's pretty hard to concentrate on anything else but what your dessert is going to be. :)
Lovesfood
Love their desserts. I rarely come here to eat, but I love it for take out desserts. Their key lime pie is THE best I've ever had and they do a great cheesecake. They seem to make their desserts just the right sweetness level in my opinion, they're never too sweet.
PrairieGal
Yum! Yum!. The 5 of us girls headed her for dessert on a Saturday night, and we were all impressed. Everyone order something different, and everyone was satisfied. I had a raspberry-lemon cheesecake and is was smooth and decadent. I'll definitely be back.
Mangosteen
Have liked it in the past. Had the raspberry lemon pie. Really terrible. The filling was chewy. Hope the other desserts are better.
Nitsa Al
I have been living beside Vi's for 23 years (seriously, the house on the corner, please dont block my drive way when u come eat at this amazing little restaurant) While I have had none of their dinner items, I have had ALL their desserts And let me tell you that they are worth the drive down to the middle of nowhere. Everything from the caramel squares to the Keylime pie are freshly made daily and just the best in Edmonton
I wouldn't write a review unless it was worth my time and this was worth all 23 years
Ryan
The food is really good but unfortunately if you are expecting anything above average to poor customer service, this could be an agitating experience.
Singlemaltgirl
Great staff, lovely to hang out on rainy afternoon. I don't live in the area so it is a bit of a trek for me but the staff are always so accommodating and it's lovely to sit in a corner and just hang out with a lovely piece of cake (there are pies but i'm not a pie gal) and a cup of tea. Casual spot to just wile away an hour or so...although I do tend to stay away on the weekends as it gets a bit busy.
Jeremy
Third visit in a year. I don't often go back to a restaurant multiple times in a year unless it's the type of place that fills a craving. That's what Vie's is.

The strange thing is that for me, it's not the pies. I grew up on homemade pies with fresh fruit from my grandma's trees in BC. The pies here are good (certainly better than average) but I haven't had any that were the kind I crave.

The brisket here I usually find good, as well as the ribs, the sandwiches, etc. The side beans are always good, though the mac and cheese could use some work. I always find it more than just a little bland.

Recently my wife and I made another return trip, and I got the brisket. This time, it really just wasn't very good. Very, very fatty, and actually a little tough. The meat itself didn't even have much flavor, just the sauce.

I'm sure I'll be back again, but I'm a little nervous.
Corinne
An old standby. Vi's is one of those places that for me hasn't changed a bit over the years. Their food is consistently good and because of their location is just a nice walk for either a nice meal or coffee and desert. I've never had a bad experience here, and will continue to go back.
JaLu
Love the desserts! And dinner there can I'd surprisingly good as well. Highly recommend the chocolate caramel cake.
Lindsey O
I have never had a less than amazing meal at Vi's. It is my favorite spot for good, home cooked, comfort food. I almost always get the chicken cheddar salsa because its so amazing!
JJ
I find it rediculious that a pie shop won't sell me a whole pie. Unless you order it two days in advance. Guess I don't want to go there with five friends who all like the same thing. Waste of my time!

Service = 0, Pie = Gross!. So I have read some really great reviews about this place. Based on my experience today I am having to disagree. I went there today with 3 friends. The building was very nice, it was decorated well for Christmas. But that was it. Heres my experience:

1. Arrvied, waited a few minutes for a server then just seated myself. She was already inside. It was a late lunch, there were 3 tables of guests.
2. waiited about 10 minutes for a server to come see us.(my friend was already at the table with tea so the server knew about us
3. Ordered tea, waited about 10 minutes, I asked for lemon and honey with my tea....never got either even after 3 or 4 times asking for it.
4. Ordered lunch, the waitress was well versed in the menu and offered up great suggestions.
5. Lunch came out in about 10 minutes - not bad.Food was good. Maybe not as good as it should be at a place like that but good.
6. A friend comes, 20 minutes later we haven't seenour waitress to order anything else. We had to go find our server for cuttlery and napkins.
7. Time for Pie! I ordered what looked like the best lemon merigune pie in the world.............its my favourite pie of all time........it was the WORST Ihave ever eaten. It was obviously old, like overa day old (which is no good for this kindof pie) The lemmon didn't taste like lemon and the merigune didn't taste like merigune . The lemonhad the texture of hard tofu. The waitress said it was because they made the lemon out of real lemons....well they should go to the grocery store and buy a pie mix because it was DISGUSTING! The server tol us that mostpeople dont like it, she offered to bring me something else. I gotthe peanut butter pie....yummie,but too sweet I could only eat a few bites!
My friends had various desserts, only the cheese cakes were good. their coconut cake was stale. Which was too bad. I bet it was amazing when fresh. For a place with Pie in the name they certianly don't have a clue about making pies!

Throughout this my friends went to the front to get the attention of the wait staff! Who loooked at them but ignored them. Absolutely terrible experience.
Fanelli
One of the best. Home cooking style, with the best in-house smoked beef brisket in Alberta! Great, in-house smoked ribs as well! Don't forget the pies!
Ryan Letendre
The best bumble pie ever
NerdLaura
The BBQ is fabulous, the sides (potato salad and coleslaw) were bland. I have had cheesecake with overly salty crust several times, and very poor service several times as well. The bunwich is great, with really thick pieces of cheese and super tasty dill spread. Wonderful atmosphere, the back patio is heaven. So I don't know how to rate Vi's. you'll have to see how you feel about it yourself.

I always come here when I go to Edmonton, even though I stay in the far south side of the city. Had the chicken pot pie....would've preferred a yummy pastry as opposed to a puff pastry nugget plunked on top, otherwise delicious. Caramel chocolate cake for dessert...a winner but the service had gone downhill since the last few times I went. It's a bit of a blemish on an otherise great place!
Matthieu Coulombe
The ribs...they are simply amazing!

Waited at the counter for eight minutes before anyone would look me in the eye to acknowledge my existence. Yes, they were busy but I was obviously standing at their counter, nicely illuminated by the dessert lighting, trying to get someone's attention. Would have left had I not been meeting someone.

Eventually got seated but then had a similar experience of waiting at the counter again, this time to order. The staff scurried around this way and that, again avoiding direct eye contact for another five minutes. Again, I had to "interrupt" an employee to place our order.

Fortunately, the food arrived promptly.

Unfortunately, the lovely looking strawberry shortcake made on a scone looked lovelier than it tasted. The strawberries and cream were fine but the hard, crumbly scone obviously had seen better days.

Oh well - should've complained while I was there!

Amazing banana cream pie!

Best Pies I've Ever Tasted. They don't make pie like this anywhere else! The Key lime pie is a must-try! But even when it isn't there are loads of other delectable pies, cakes and cheesecake! Every flavour is delicious and every helping is generous. If you think you're hungry enough, the lunch they serve is worth a try too! Specifically the spinach and cheese quiche! I highly recommend sharing lunch with a friend though, because I guarantee you're both going to want your own slice of pie after!

Best cake in Edmonton!

What Went Wrong. Was excited to stop here, so many good reviews. Patio very cute. Ordered Chicken Salad sandwich. The dressing was very runny, it made the bread all soggy and it fell apart. Tried to eat with fork but plate was a mess. Had no knife to cut giant cucumbers that were in sandwich. Didn't have server visit even once to see if we needed anything. Might go again, just for desert.

Loved the Shepherds Pie. Very well made and delicious. The French onion soup was very hard to stomach as all I could taste was wine. Slightly disappointed that they had run out of the BBQ.

Very good IF.... Went to Vi's for Pies today. Even though it was super hot outside we wanted a nice meal AND dessert. Very nice atmosphere and despite a lot of the other reviews I have read we didn't notice any unusual wait times and the staff were perfectly fine. I ordered the brisket and my friend ordered the pot pie. The menu is small but nice enough; basically the menu and the food are very indicative of a bakery-turned restaurant and everything we had was good. For dessert I had the German Chocolate Cake and my friend had the chocolate cheesecake. Both good, both obviously homemade. The only way I can really sum up Vi's, and this will sound a bit lame, is that it is really good if it is EXACTLY what you feel like at the time or you have a favourite on the menu. It strikes me as a good lunch or dessert place, or a place when you have a very specific craving. Both the limited menu and the food we had, though good and well prepared, were not in any real way unique or expectional. It is good, solid food at reasonable prices. But I don't think it will blow you away.

The only place in Edmonton where I feel like I'm eating home-made, comfort food... the only place.. Good place to come to after a break-up or if you are just having a bad day. I think it's one of those rare places where you can dine on your own without feeling much embarrassment. The portions look small at first but it will fill you up till you are happy; and if that wasn't enough, there's always dessert around the corner. Unpretentious and down to earth, you can't go wrong coming here. Oh and please ladies and gents, don't complain about how much you are paying for something you can make at home. Unless you are a cook who actually loves food and loves your job, or you have a grandmother that is still taking care of you, this is the only place that can provide you with that level of zen.

Excellent!. We visited Vi's last night for supper. Upon entering we were greeted immeadiately and offered our choice of tables. Our waitress delivered water right away and brought over the menu board. After ordering our food arrived within no more than 15 minutes. Our table sampled the bbq ribs, brisket, and roast chicken bunwich with a homemade chicken enchilada soup. Everything was delicious, and our request for additional bbq sauce and butter were fufilled promptly. Our server was friendly, accomodating and present without being intrusive. After packing up leftovers we enjoyed some of their fabulous desserts and tea. We enjoyed our visit and would not hesitate to return!!

May 4, 2012. We left after standing in line for ten minutes based on the inattentive serving staff allowing the woman and her children who literally barged in after us to be served first. Didn't want to make a scene in front of the kids.

The food here is always very good - especially the barbecue dishes. And, of course, the pie is phenomenal. However, be prepared to do quite a bit of waiting here...most of the servers are nice, but they're incredibly slow and can be somewhat neglectful with their service. I'll give you an example. There were dirty dishes sitting at an empty table for 20 minutes after we arrived for dinner tonight, waited almost 15 to be acknowledged, and another 10-15 to get our leftovers packed up.

Great spot for dessert. We went for a weekday lunch and while the place was packed, we still received great service all around. The chicken pot pie was tasty, but luke warm at best. The ribs were okay, and unfortunately also suffered a bit on the temperature scale. No need to comment on the dessert...there's nothing bad, all sinfully delicious!!

Pie was delish! I got a sandwich to go and the wait was a little crazy. But everything tasted awesome!

I love the atmosphere and homey feel of the place, especially in the summer. The food and service are a hit or miss, but good for the most part. Either way, its Still one if my favorite places in the city to go for an long coffee date with friends.

Soup was delicious but the service was slow and neglectful. I found it pretty pricey for soup and sandwich. Wanted to try the pie but for the price I decided not to

Went there for dinner. Absolutely delicious BBQ, hands down best cheesecake I have ever had. Ambience was nice and relaxed. I have no complaints about the service.

Pies. I was amazed on my first visit to learn that a slice of pie costs over $6. That seemed excessive so I didn't stay to try any!!

Not too impressed. Quiche dry. Salad not even cut up properly. Great ambiance.

This place used to be a nice local cafe I was proud to bring out of towners to. Lately I've become emberrassed to do so. I was there very recently. We waited over 20 mins for our drinks and food. Only after 20 mins were we told that they run out of most food and were given cold lattes. We waited another 30 mins for a couple pieces of cake, which never came. My guests left hungry, thirsty and very annoyed. Too bad.

A favorite date restaurant of mine. The entrees are tasty, great portions and are reasonably priced. The pies are exceptional, and the other desserts are just as delicious. You can't go wrong here.
Mimi
Not impressed by their customer service. Took over ten minutes to get our pies and tea when it wasn't even busy. Probably won't be coming back

I'm currently receiving the worst service I've ever had. I've been coming to this place for ages and have never experienced service like I'm getting today. Slow slow slow slow. There are people lined up out the door waiting for a table when there are 10 empty tables in the back. Usually they let you seat yourself but for some stupid reason they have a wait to be seated sign up and only like 2 people working. Stupid. - end of venting

Outstanding. Since my daughter moved to Edmonton (we are from Yellowknife, NWT), our favourite place to go is Vi's Pies. Their quiche is out of this world. The ambience, the service, the food is outstanding. Vi's pies is a place we never miss on my visits to Edmonton. The prices are more than reasonable, the friendly atmosphere and the pumpkin pie for dessert has turned into a tradition with Sarah and I. We talk, laugh and thoroughly enjoy each other and the terrific food.

What are you people waiting for?!. As a person who absolutely adores food, Vi's for Pies has got to be one of the best places for food. I used to go to school not to far from Vi's and i went there all the time for food at lunch. mostly for the cakes and pies(and yes if you dont like it i dont know what will make you people happy) true that the customer service can be somewhat rude but hey people everywhere you go will have rude services here and there. look past the service for once and enjoy the food. Vi's for Pies is a must try (specially the chocolate caramel cake warmed up with whipped cream)

Great food, poor server. I was really exited to go for a cheesecake on our anniversary. As we're new in town I being checking urban spoon a lot. And, as everyone said, the pies are gorgeous, delicious. the lemon pie was perfect, and the cheesecake one of the best ever had. But the servers are rude, and extremely unpolited. I'll go back b/c I love pies, but for sure not gonna leave any tips as I did last time.

Edmonton Landmark. A must visit place in Edmonton! It should be in all Edmonton tourism literature. A place worth the drive for a late night cheesecake and a milk steamer.... going there right now!

Vi's hates families. Arriving at Vi's for our weekly visit I was amazed to find a large sign on the front door banning strollers. When we asked about the ban the owner dived into a rant against families of small kids, strollers, and other people she does not want in her place. She did not approached us before about our stroller and did not provide any options this time such as high chairs and kids seats. Crazy for a family cafe... if you have a little one stay far away from this place.

A neat place. Lunch was good and affordable. Will go again.

Great except for service. The ongoing saga of this establishment is poor service. It isn't only isolated to eat in, as we went there to get some dessert, and as first time customers were excited to try them out.
Upon entering we were greeted with disdain from the woman attending the cooler containing the cakes at the front.
When I asked to see their menu we were coldly given one to peruse and after asking if they had a price list for cakes to buy whole, were given a response to the effect of 'there is no pricelist'.
We walked out (not buying anything of course) with the thought that this place caters to the rich and well heeled, but I see from other comments that this isn't the case.
I believe that one way to remedy this is go eat there, but don't leave one cent tip (or do, as then they may get the message).

Really good food. The food is wonderful, homemade taste and the deserts are extremely yummy. I have to agree with other reviewer's the servers are extremely rude. It's almost like you are an inconvenience to them.

Sandwich obsessed. I love their sandwiches. Pies not so much. Food is great though! Will have to try more pies in the future. Maybe it was just not a pie day for me.

Always a busy place for lunch so plan to get there really early or have a late lunch. Nice place to go with your girlfriends for a bite and a chat.
