Dinner at the Bothy. This small pub/bar is all wood when you walk in the door. Staff were quick to seat us. However we find ourselves waiting throughout the rest of our meal for service.
The scotch list is a long one. A very long one. Great selection to choose from, including singles and flights. Staff are very knowledgeable of the types flavors and styles of scotch on the shelf. Wine list is much shorter than the scotch but has excellent choices to choose from.
Rack of lamb for dinner tonight. Lamb arrives perfectly cooked with flavorful sides.
Food and drink are great at the Bothy just be prepared to spend most of your night. Relax!
The Bothy has great food and an excellent selection of wine and whiskey (as the name implies). The staff is always friendly and accommodating and the place has a great atmosphere all around. Definitely one of my favourite spots in the city.
If you come here, get one of their meat pies or the chef's special of the day. The charcuterie boards are also a good choice! Great selection of scotch and wine. A great atmosphere for a cozy date or double date
Just went here with my fiance, and we both loved everything. The charcuterie was excellent, lots of tastey pickles and sauces to go with the meats we chose (smoked duck, smoked bison and elk sausage). We also got the baked brie, which was amazing (as baked brie always is). My fiance got the haggis, which was pretty good, if I little unusual. I ate all of his 'neeps' (turnip puree). I got the steak and mushroom pie, which was rich and filling. All our drinks were good, and the service was good. We will be back.
I am very happy with the experiencethis establishment provided.
On June 11/12th, 2016, my girlfriend and I decided to check out this place to celebrate our anniversary. We arrived fairly late (2300 hrs) and the kitchen was closed, but our server (the guy with the fantastic beard and mustache) still went and made us this amazing tray of stuffed olives, an olive-based spread, and thinly cut bread to accompany the wine. He offered us some wine samples prior to ordering and his recommendations were right on point.
I'd like to thank him once again for making our anniversary memorable, and I will definitely pay a visit the next time I'm visiting Edmonton.
Thank you,
Pablo and Genessa
One of my favorite places. I come here often since it is close to home. Great service with very knowledgeable staff. I always enjoy the food as well but typically only get tapas.
Had the chicken pie, it was a little over cooked, but the flavours were awesome. Defiantly recommend this place for a small quaint atmosphere.
This place is very very good! I loved the atmosphere and the service was fantastic. The cheese platter and baked Brie were fantastic I loved the herbs in the Brie. The wine was great as well. Definitely coming back!
The food seems overpriced for the portion sizes. I had the lamb here and I honestly could make a better one myself. The reason you would want to come here is the ridiculously huge selection of scotch and whiskey. That's about it.
A Nice Cozy Treat. Tried this out last week and it was rather nice. It's a bit pricey for the food. Had the meat cheese platter and added some extra stuff. Felt like what we paid for, there should have had a fair bit more food. I also tried their haggis, and it wasn't the best I have ever had, but wasn't the worst. I have had haggis while travelling Scotland and now have a very high standard for the dish. The neeps were really good, potatoes bland and the haggis looks like a fried store bought hamburger (not appealing) and tasted like herb and spice liver sausage. With that said, still the best I have had in Canada thus far.
PROS: Whiskey/Scotch 1/2 once tastings; Red Wine Selection; Cozy Atmosphere
CONS: White Wine Selection; Food Portion to Cost Ratio; They don't take reservations
I always forget to take photos....Dang-it!!
Mostly quite good. I like the Bothy. They have extensive wine and whiskey options and a pleasing atmosphere and menu. The chicken pot pie is a treat, flakey and flavourful, and the starters are all quite tasty as well. The Bothy follows suite with a lot of other smaller boutique restaurants these days in offering a more localized menu though they are not as die-hard on that principle as some and deviate freely so as to not lose out on any ingredient options. Having said all that though, I have to say that the Bothy has the worst valued charcuterie plates in the city (in my experience). Serving sizes for the mix and match plates are pitiful, and opt to try and fill you up on accompanying jams and breads instead. I am used to the small portioned and high price of the average charcuterie plate but I find that the Bothy takes it just a bit too far. The nice part of the charcuterie plate though, is that you can, in this case, freely mix and match. So it might be worth it to you if you are fussy about your fine cheeses and cured meats.
What has happens to ye?. I was so looking forward to getting back to the The Bothy after a long absence and the whole meal was awful! The $24 charcuterie plate was dismal with about $5 worth of meat and cheese and condiments..including pesto? Pesto?
The entrees were all similarly skimpy. The blast sandwich was tiny, the soup was salty, the steak and mushroom pie was so bad it was removed uneaten. The haggis was awesome and appetizer sized with a entree price. It was plated, well, cafeteria style. The salad with the pie was literally inedible due to a very bitter vinaigrette. We skipped desert.
The server was pleasant and inattentive. She took the plate full of uneaten pie away with nary a word or query. I asked her when she returned if she had it noticed anything when she cleared the plates. She said she did notice we had hardly touched much of the pie...so why not ask why I asked her...she said "some people aren't that hungry".
Never will we return...great place once. Maybe that's why 6-7:30 on a Friday it was almost empty.
Fantastic spot to eat dinner, called to check if they were open for dinner. The waitress gave me very helpful directions. I ordered the Haggis it was great. Nice atmosphere, very friendly staff. Highly recommend it !
Probably the most civilized place in Edmonton to spend the evening hours.
4/5 for The Bothy. The Bothy has been on my 'to-try list' ever since it opened on Calgary Trail in Pleasantview. I actually attempted to go once, but walked in to find the place totally packed to the brim, so I did not stay. They have since opened a second location downtown on trendy 124th Street.
My visit on a Thursday night was a much less crowded experience. I arrived to my choice of any table in the room, and the place remained sparsely occupied throughout my stay. The space is quite adorable and warm, very much like a Scottish pub. The word 'bothy' is derived from the Gaelic word 'bothan' meaning small hut. This small hut is painted a bright mustard yellow, plenty of light pours in from the windows, and the deep wood of the bar tie everything together. There is a wine cellar at the back of the room and there are whisky bottles everywhere, for as far as the eye can see! This place is highly specialized in whisky, if that wasn't immediately obvious. In fact, I flipped through their five pages of available whiskies in awe. Unfortunately I was not here to drink alcohol on this particular visit, but it's very obvious that doing so would be the best way to experience this place. They even offer whisky flight programmes and other such whisky-related tid-bits of fun. If you are a whisky lover, this place has been created for you.
Luckily, their food is excellent as well, giving you many reasons to try this place out. There is a definite 'whisky region' theme to the menu, which is a lot of fun. They have an incredible cheese and charcuterie selection, which is made even more interesting by being able to create your own boards. I was very close to ordering the Haggis for dinner (I'm very much a 'when-in-Rome' type of person) but if there is one thing that I adore about UK cuisine, it's meat pies. They offer both beef and chicken varieties, and I opted for the beef - Steak and Mushroom Pie (sirloin steak, wild mushrooms, red wine gravy, and seasoned vegetables - $18.00). It arrived after a reasonable amount of time and looked pretty unassuming. It's difficult to tell what the insides are going to be like, but the outside appeared to be a perfect golden-brown. As soon as I cracked into the flaky pie shell, I was met with piping-hot contents that were prepared to perfection and created a harmonious balance to the buttery crust. This was savoury and delicious! I loved the large and flavourful pieces of mushroom and the sirloin and gravy created the perfect filling. This was very likely the best meat pie that I've had in the city, and I would order it again and again.
The meat pie was served with choice of soup, salad, or mashed potatoes, and I picked the Tomato and Bacon Soup (tomato soup finished with cream, bacon and basil pesto), which is their house soup. Wow! I really loved this soup! The tomato purée was dense, and the best part were the thick-cut chunks of salty bacon on top. The pesto added a pleasant hit of olive oil that I absolutely enjoyed.
I love that the food was so excellent, making it such a wonderful focus, even though their specialty is actually their booze. I would love to try this place again, and sample much more of what they have to offer. On top of that, the service was very friendly and informative. She even asked if it was my first visit and explained the menu to me. If you're interested in a brief foray over to Scotland without leaving the city, this is the place to go.
Food, wine and service was incredible!
Very VF. I came here with a friend and was pleasantly surprised when they whipped up some delicious vegan food for me. They were extremely accommodating and I will definitely be coming back. Service was great, drinks were perfect and food was delicious as well!
Great, knowledgable staff. Had an excellent petit syrah, steak tartare, maple yam steak, desserts and whiskey to follow. Everything tasted fabulous. Excellent evening
Great service & delicious food. Really enjoyed the main dishes, wine suggestions and scotch tasting. Will go back as the menu is fabulous and the staff are friendly & knowledgeable.
Perfect for date night. This is one of the few wine bars we have in Edmonton, i was looking for something less traditional for a night out. i found The Bothy online, Thought we'd give it a try considering its imense variety of Wine and Whisky. We were provided with great service, the ambience was intimate, and the wine and whisky selection was more then we anticipated! it was great! Im a huge fan of Pinot for its not so "dry" taste. We tried the Linea 300 Pinot , its a really light fruity red wine. We drank it like water, Although i wouldnt pair that with their Salmon ( which the waitress had advised us of) It brought out the metallc taste of the fish. For an entree i ordered the Chicken Pie. This was just your standard home made pot pie. Overall we had a fabolous night and tons of fun choosing different wines. Definately will be back
Such a warm and cozy place!!! Love it! Wine list is wonderful.
Awesome. It was my first time at the Bothy this past Friday, at first my friends and I didnt know what to expect. The menu is very large and can be a bit overwhelming for a whisky beginner but with the wonderful help from our server we were guided to taste some great scotches! I can't wait to come back serveral times to conquer the "wall of whisky". Overall, this was more than I ever expected!
Great Night. I recently went out to the bothy with my wife for an enjoyable night. We went in for some wine mostly, but ended up trying some pretty amazing scotch that our knowledgable server (Georgia) recommended. Everything was great from the service to the food, the wine, and the whisky!!! Highly recommended! We will be back.
My oh My!. I love The Bothy. Simply put, the service is great. They are a very knowledgeable staff, but in no way pretentious. Our server gave us excellent scotch recommendations and overall, they created a very inviting atmosphere. The food was amazing. More of a Tapas kind of place, so don't expect Nachos and Onion rings ( but thats fine with me!).
So, visit the Bothy. Go with an adventurous spirit, and enjoy!
Now this is a glimpse to the city Edmonton can be! Over 200 whiskies, 20 wines by the glass and a system to keep them fresh! I was there on a Friday night and there was a line out the door, so I'd say get there early. We sat at the bar and our Scottish bartender put together a flight of scotch for us ( glendronach 95, scapa 16, ardbeg uig) when a table came open we were passed to small table next to the fireplace. Our server (chelsey) answered all of our food and alcohol questions with ease, putting together another flight ( my memory goes a little foggy with the booze!) and cheese / charcuterie plate to go with it. Music was right along my tastes (LCD soundsystem, hot chip, mountain goats) Don't go on the weekend if you were expecting a quiet little night as it is loud and doesn't slow down. I hear they are opening a new place downtown so I'd expect a few new staff on the horizon, but with the amount of drinks on offer I'd think new servers may need a 2/3 month grace period. This isn't your average bar, they aren't just opening up a bottle or pouring a hi ball. Again, this isn't a restaurant. Notice the bar in the actual name. When compared to bars in he city the food is fresh and in my opinion great! Go now, before it gets even busier when the rest of the city knows about it.
Delicious! I had the haggis and a flight of wine. Everything was delicious and the service was great!
Warm & cozy. Went Sunday night, so quiet! But that meant we had excellent attention and input from server/bartender David. I love the selection of red wines (not much of a scotch drinker).
Price is a little higher than we're used to, but it's worth it. Will definitely be back!
Great food & service! Sat on their little patio and thought it was great considering the restaurant's proximity to Calgary Trail. The charcuterie platter was well portioned and tasty and the pot pies seemed very authentic- homemade pastry & fresh fillings. Also the tomato bacon soup is definitely a reason to go back! We drank cider & wine this visit so next time - whisky!
I love love love this place. The staff are always warm and welcoming. Great food and wine selection. Definitely worth every penny, I've never been disappointed.
Great food and great wine list! Overall awesome. Not a very extensive white wine by the glass list, and would be nice to see a few more Canadian wines in the cellar.
Unique. Awesome whisky and wine selection with very knoweldgable and friendly staff. Shared appetizers that were interesting, different, and delicious. We continue to return primarily because of the diversity in the liquor menu and the education we gain from talking with the staff. Great atmosphere and always a unique experience.
Absolutely fantastic food, service and wine selection! I would rate this plae as one of the best in the city... By far!
Great food, wine , whisky. atmosphere. First time visiting the bothy. brought my family as we'd heard wonderful things about this bar from friends. my boys love whisky and the barman was really knowledgable about scotland and it's whiskies. told us stories where whisky was distilled and suggested that they have a balvenie doublewood 12 with the salmon gastrique... they loved it. for myself and my husband we had wine ..a glass of an italian wine, an ameone i think but i'm not up on my wines. however, now i've been to the bothy i may just try to improve my knowledge of wines and whiskies to. i had a chicken and leek pie that reminded me of my omas cooking and my husband had something called lorn sasage. got to go back. looks like the patio is ready to go.. i'll be there again. great service. great bar.
Nobody In Particular
+4.5
Great for Drinks. Came here one night for a late dinner and some drinks. I really love charcuterie, so when I read about this place, I thought it would be worth a shot. So far, this is the only place I know of in Edmonton that advertises charcuterie.
Its a small venue, that you probably wouldn't notice at a glance. All the tables were occupied, so we were offfered seats at the bar, and could move as soon as a table opened up. We ended up really enjoying the atmosphere at the counter, so we stayed. It was
very casual, light, and fun conversation. This place's focus is on whiskey and wine, as the name suggests. Lots of wines to choose from, and even more whiskeys. Our server was the bartender, and he seemed very knowledgable about all the wines and whiskeys. He had a very laid back attitude.
We had the charcuterie, and it was okay. Maybe I just had high charcutrie board expectations, but I didn't think the meat and cheese, and presentation was all that great. I didn't seem like the quality of ingredients were there. We also had the steak and mushroom pie with a side of their tomatoe bacon soup. The soup was awful. The texture was like a lumpy, luke warm tomatoe soup. Bacon bits were hard and chewy. Maybe it was the end of the pot, since it was getting late. The steak pie on the other hand was delicious! I was full from our appetizers, but from what I did have of the pie, I loved. The crust was flaky and buttery, and the filling was hearty and flavourful.
I think this place would be the perfect venue for friends to come and have a fun, casual, yet sophisticated night of drinks, and something not too bad to nibble on in the background. The food as the main event on the other hand, I woulnd't recommend.
Absolutely great place. This place has a great comfortable atmosphere with good food and a great drink selection. The food menu is not large, but the items they serve are well prepared and I'm sure any of them are a great choice. Don't be afraid of the haggis, its excellent. My only knock on this place is its location, I would love to actually be able to walk to it or ride the LRT. It just doesn't seem right in a strip mall down on Calgary Trail.
Love the Bothy. Definitely one of my most favourite restaurants - the Bothy combines amazing food, wine and scotch, with excellent service and a warm and relaxing atmosphere.
Highly recommended!
Wonderful. What a great place to go for lunch or dinner. We always order different items so we can share them, and every single one of them was amazing, but the pies.... sweet or savoury... mmm
Great scotch and wine selection and the staff is incredibly knowledgeable.
Surprised. I had the pleasure of trying this place today for lunch, and I have to say I was impressed. The menu is not huge but what they do have is worth trying. I love that they concentrate on a few dishes and have mastered them rather then having a huge menu and mastering one or two or worse...none.
I tried the chicken & leek pie with mashed potatoes and it was sooo good, the pastry it was was flakey and soft, it wasn't dry either like a look of crusts for a pie have the potential to end up being. The potatoes were soft and melt in your mouth good.
For dessert I tried the apple pie which was also amazing, It was really well presented and wasn't just pleasing to the eye but to the taste buds as well. It wasn't over sweet but a nice conclusion to the main course.
The person I was with had the Maple Yam Spread sandwich and had nothing but good things to say about it.
I do not know what the final bill was as I was not the person paying for it but I know my dish was $15 and I would have to say more then worth it.
The server was friendly and talkative with an awesome scottish brogue.
I can't say enough good things about this establishment, I will definitely return and bring friends with me.
Overall, one of my new favorite bars in Edmonton. Very classy place, great ambiance, knowledgeable staff and great service, not to mention a wonderful selection of wine and scotch. Oh, and they have a great wine machine that pumps Argon into open bottles so they last over a month! Very cool.
I hope to head back to The Bothy soon. Friendly, helpful service, incredible food, a relaxed and warm atmosphere, lots of laughing people... just great! And pictures next time - I promise.
The look and feel of the downtown Bothy is much the same as the south location – warm colours, relaxed ambiance, gorgeous staff, rich wood, long bar with granite top, convenient hooks under the bar for coats and purses. The menu continues to offer is array of cheese, charcuterie, their famous tomato bacon soup, and top-notch sandwiches, salads, entrees and desserts.
