Review Blue Plate Diner - Edmonton

Bailey Blue Rose
Went for my sister's birthday and it was really great, I had a/the French toast, bro had bacon cheddar burger, sis had chicken burger. Everyone thought it was delicious. Drinks were good. Don't recall what we all got. We were all super excited for this place and it definitely met our expectations. It was nice to hang with them as I don't see them often. Will definitely come again

One of the best dining experiences I've had in a very long time. Exceptional service and quality food. If you're in town looking for a great breakfast with good coffee service this is the spot.

First and last time here. Owners did not look happy to serve clients. Food was extremely dry and had little flavour. As soon as we were finished they rushed over with the bill. The whole visit felt unwelcoming.

came here for the first time with my mom for mother’s day brunch and enjoyed it very much. the decor is nostalgic & charming. eggs benny & the french toast special was delicious :-) best hollandaise sauce i’ve had.
Colton Peacey
Simple food favorites, but with a slight twist, this place has high quality friendly staff that know the menu and make suggestions if requested, A good place to go for a relaxed and quiet atmosphere.

Quite enjoyed it !good value for your dollar, down home cooking with a really warm feel…. Warm service and a cool room to Dine! Will be back

Heard a lot of good things about this place so maybe my expectations were too high, but I found the food to be run of the mill and the mimosas were more than 50% just a cup of ice. Absolutely couldn't taste any bubbly in it. One slice of my French toast was perfect but the other was undercooked and jiggly. Thought the walnut butter flavor would be inside the toast but it was just a small pile of overly buttery candied walnuts op top of the French toast. At $15 for two pieces of French toast and two tiny pieces of jalapeño bacon it felt like poor value. I'd probably go back to a variety of other brunch options in town before returning here unfortunately.

My first time at the new location (Ya don't get out much). Food was very good, is it the best cinnamon bun I had this weekend, no (high level all the way) but it was a more than passable brunch appetizer; the potatoes and eggs were top notch really some of the best, sausage was very good as well. Also had their cold tea with was nicely sweetened - almost like a tea/lemonade - a very refreshing drink on a hot day.

Visited here today for lunch, the bacon mushroom sandwich special was fabulous ( we both had it)...i had the side of mac and cheese while across the table had pureed borsht, a first for the both of us. The service was exceptional. At the end of the meal, i noticed i had been charged an extra $2.50 for the side of mac and cheese. When i asked our server, she confirmed it was an up charge, however, in her initial description of the special prior to our ordering, she did not indicate any up charge for the 4 sides included with the special. ( fries, sweet potato fries, soup or mac and cheese)....

Underground parking available, ramp in the back of the building. Food and service were both good, not great, not bad.

Cozy place to go to on a cold winter Eve. Interesting beer selections on tap. Reasonable prices and tasty entrees. Friendly staff. I will definately be returning.

Blue Plate Diner is always a downtown favorite and a solid place for lunch. Great and friendly service and food. On this visit, the only complaint I have is the soup tasted bland... but everything else was very tasty.

Interesting Place, certainly thrives on simple homey type selections, I was there with a business associate and we had a simple quick lunch, the service was good and quick, Meat loaf sandwich and Mac and Cheese, was good, I would go back

This was one of our favourite spots until today when our friend's allergic reaction was handed extremely poorly! She has a nut allergy, prior to ordering she asked if her dish contained nuts and she was assured there was no nuts in the dish. After asking again we were assured that the only dish with nuts in it is the peanut butter pie. Through the whole ordeal she was never asked if she was ok, or if she needed anything else. The manager never once came to our table to check on her, only communicated through the waitress. She ended up having to use her Epipen in their washroom and nearly vomited on the way home. And to top it all off she was handed the bill to her meal! We will not be going back ever.

I've been going to a lot of places on 104st and Blue Plate Diner caught my eye. My girlfriend and I went during lunch time on Friday. Evidently it was busy but we got seated right away. The place is has got a old school vibe to it with brick and tarnished metal tables. Their menu is standard fair; salads, burgers, couple mains, nothing too exciting here to be honest. <br/><br/>Now time of ordering was around 12:00pm and my girlfriend got a Orangina and I got their Strawberry Lemonade which was pretty dope and not overly sweet. Now our food did not arrive until 12:45 which was a real buzzkill. But when the ice in your drink has fully melted and your food hasn't arrived yet then that's a real shame. My girlfriend got their BBQ Meatloaf Sandwich and it was pretty tasty. Meatloaf had a nice soft texture and the BBQ was spot on. The Ciabatta bread wasn't the best as it was already falling apart on the plate. I got their Bison & Duck confit burger and this was truly forgettable. I doubt there is enough duck confit in the patty to be detectable cause I couldn't taste any. Besides that the toppings were meh and my beloved Brioche bun was beyond soggy when I took my first bite. The burger did nothing for me but fill my stomach. Their fries are pretty bomb though but they give you the tiniest portion of ketchup you would get at McDonalds in the classic paper cups. <br/><br/>Blue Plate Diner has a nice lively vibe to it but not for me. Another restaurant on 104st down and I personally won't be coming back anytime soon.

I thought I had done a review on Blue Plate but looking back, I haven't.  Here it is.  I think blue plate is a very standard and hip kind of place.  It doesn't have a lot of things surprising you but the small menu and local flavours are definitely there.  It's kinda like a sugar bowl.  Good contemporary Canadian food.  If you are sick of chains then this is the place to be.

This is a staple of dining downtown; it's comfort food taken to the next level. The burgers are amazing and the green onion cakes are the best in town. I've tried almost everything else on the menu and haven't been disappointed. <br/><br/>The patio is small but comfortable. There are 6 rotating beer taps, and pints are $5 during happy hour. The few times that we've had wine, it's been a good selection. Overall, it's hard to fault this gem.

This was disappointing. Service was fine, but slow (kitchen seemed a bit slow perhaps?). Ordered duck burger special - it was just ok, not anything to rave about, and pork loin. Pork was almost non-existent on the plate... and very dry. I think maybe they ran out of meat? I'd have been happy if they'd told me there wasn't enough to go around and chosen something else. As it was I got 5 very small, dry pieces and lots and lots of potatoes, onions and carrots to fill up the plate. Tasty but not good value for $24. Maybe another time would be better... Hope they can improve

I love celebrity gossip.  For instance – did you know, that back in 2012 when Justin Bieber was in Edmonton that he went to the Blue Plate Diner with then girlfriend Selena Gomez?  Yep, its true. And if you have ever eaten at the Blue Plate Diner, you would understand.  There is something about the food and atmosphere that make the 104 Street fixture unique.  The staff are accessible and friendly.  It is just plain good.
Chrissy Meets World
I love the cozy and casual atmosphere here. They offer a breakfast, brunch, lunch and dinner menu. They are also have gluten-free and vegan options. The food is an interesting mix of contemporary comfort food that I enjoyed. Good portion sizes but a little bit pricey. Lunch for two with one drink each and an appetizer to share was $60.
Around The City
Cozy place with amazing comfort food. Located on 104st which is the ultimate foodie place to be. Parking can be tricky as it's all street parking but once you make it inside you won't be disappointed. The service was good, attentive and friendly. <br/><br/>I ordered the famous mac n cheese to share. It was so creamy and cheesy it made me want more. <br/><br/>I also got the shepherds pie which was flavourful. The potatoes were creamy, the ground lamb was delicious and brought the whole dish together. <br/><br/>I'll be back for sure to try out the other things on the menu. A great place for vegetarians too as there are lots of options for everyone!

Bland, pricey cold brunch. Clueless service (no checking how food was), not served for 10 minutes on arrival etc. I am easygoing but food took extremely long and $10 child's 2 pancakes (cold, no butter) and one piece of bacon with a thimble of maple syrup. Shocked at how poor it was. Our burritos were bland and barely warm-one of the worst meals out I've had. They may do dinner better but go for brunch food elsewhere. Service needs reboot and food prep needs to step it up.

Went to Blue Plate Diner on the weekend. Their weekend brunch ends at 2PM and we got there at 1:45PM hoping for lunch... they were quite friendly and accommodating when we told them that. They set up a lunch reservation for us for 2PM and let us explore the local area.<br/><br/>The food we had when we got back was great. The burger was excellent, as was the mac and cheese. There was plenty of food and the service was very friendly.

Great food great atmosphere. One of the best Caesars I've had in a while. We had a chicken club and a meatloaf sandwich with a polenta starter which were all amazing Love the decor and can't wait to eat there again

Amazing place to hangout with family and friends! The staff were friendly and their eggs beneduckt (eggs benedict + duck confit) was to die for! Their cornbread was great as well, it was nice and moist! Definitely coming back!

I often hear about Blue Plate Diner from coworkers so I finally found an occasion to go out and try it for breakfast one day. Overall, I found it... ok. I instructed the waitress to fry me an egg without the yoke. This caused significant confusion. I tried to explain a sunny side up egg but minus the yolk. I am not sure if they did not know how to remove egg yolk from an egg (simply using the shell). When the food came it was simple. Hearty and filling but nothing special. An okay place I suppose but I feel there are better places to go for breakfast in Edmonton.

Went here because Rostizado ain’t open for lunchies on the weekend, anyways this place is aight. The pancakes were pretty light and fluffy, as pancakes should be. The skillet was supposed to have meat, well how fast I read it I had assumed it had some kind of meat. So this disappointment biting into this thing was pretty large, but this thing turned out to be not that bad because they had an assortment of hot sauces that were pretty spice. The eggs benedukt was what I should’ve got, it had topped with jalapeno hollandaise which i’ve grown accustomed to in Costa Rica because yknow, world traveller. Jalapeno hollandaise is the truth though, and with the duck, it’s a good combo, Stockton and Malone good.<br/><br/>Located on 104 st and Jasper, this place has a pretty cool interior. I’ll probably check this place out for the duck and probably for a dinner.<br/><br/>Sal says: Just try it<br/><br/>#yegeats #yeg #yegdt #food #foodie #foodporn #instafood #delicious #yummy #brunch #italian

I remember coming her before and ordering the mac n cheese but I surprisingly do not recall how it tasted so I decided to order it again. Honestly, it was not bad because it had the rich cheese flavor in the béchamel sauce but it lacked a bit of seasoning. I also added bacon because who doesn’t like bacon? Unfortunately, there was a maybe about 5-6 pieces of bacon that I remember eating. Besides that, service was super and I very much enjoyed the retro/hip interior. I might come back to try the other dishes they have on their menu.

Full Disclosure: I used to work at Blue Plate Diner. I started out in 2006 as a support worker (making drinks/running food/busing tables) and then soon became a server. I mostly worked their busy brunches and weekday lunches (I hated opening wine at tables during dinner - I felt too clumsy and awkward before I was a full on wino). The owners, John Williams and Rima Devitt, kept me happily employed in their busy, kitschy restaurant for a large chunk of my university degree. I made some lasting friendships working at Blue Plate Diner (shoutouts to Maggie, Josh, Richard, Carina, Sheilagh, Erika, and Jess), and I am always greeted warmly and enthusiastically whenever I pop in.

As a part time vegetarian, I was happy to learn that Blue plate diner had vegan and vegetarian options. I ordered the meatless meatloaf. It was made with mushroom and lentils. It was very tasty!! I could have drank the gravy by itself. Service was warm and welcoming. The music and ambiance was fun. I would go back for more vegetarian food.
TJ O'Connor
The food is great and they cater to people with food intolerance's, vegetarian diets or if your a meat eater. The service is friendly but slow but that is do to the volume of customers.

I've eaten here many times and everytime has been amazing, from the food, to the staff and finally the atmosphere... best first date restaurant in my books!

Great service and great homemade food :) I liked the coffee, which is a brew that is made just for them, according to the waitress! In the heart of downtown, with lots of nice stores around.
The Pretentious Food Snob
I’ve always heard good things about Blue Plate Diner. Starting from about two years ago, it’s been mentioned in passing, or been flat out suggested to me. It’s quirky, unique, and tries to put an original spin on comfort food classics.<br/><br/>First impressions, however, were mixed.

Disclosure: This meal was comped by my university as a thank you for a speaking engagement. <br/><br/>We came as a large group of 20 and were seated at 2 long communal tables. It had a warm cozy feel. We tried the pinot noir, and the chardonnay and due to me being one of 5 people drinking I think I can safely say the wine was good :P I tried the sirloin steak with the mashed potatoes which were both excellent and cooked to my specs. I was able to try my partners food which I enjoyed as well. The staff were friendly and performed well.

This was our first trip to the Diner and we had fairly high expectations. It seemed nice inside, if a bit plain. We went during the week and it was not very busy. There were a couple of problems. First, my meatloaf was not very hot at all - it was just a bit warmer than room temperature. They took it back and headed it up more. While they were doing that my wife noticed that her pork entrée was not fully cooked. They took that back as well and cooked it some more.  We had the spring roll appetizer and it was a bit boring. My daughter did like her chicken burger though. So overall our first trip to the Diner was underwhelming. The meatloaf was fine once it was served hot. However, the potatoes were a bit bland. They did take a bit off the bill for the problems with the two entrees but we would have preferred to food to simply have been properly cooked and served. Given how quiet it was when we went there really was novexcuse for the problems with the food. Will we go again? Probably, but things will have to be better next time or that will be our last trip.

When I was planning my visit to Edmonton, I made a not if this place as the online menu listed a Shepherd’s Pie actually made with lamb instead of beef. I rather forgot about while exploring other places but then came across it as I was strolling through the summer Farmer’s market one morning. It was actually well over an hour until the lunch service began (and I’d had a breakfast), but the place has a number of local beers on tap and so I was happy to wait…

This restaurant is in a wonderful location and its great sitting outside and enjoying breakfast.  Great for a dependable breakfast while enjoying the atmosphere of 104th.

Where's the Caramel Sauce.... Real Shepherd's Pie: this dish was served hot topped with dijon seasoned mashed potatoes, but it lacked substance that a "real" shepherd's pie should have, the serving size was adequate but it seemed so underwhelming, there was a bit of lamb and then corn and peas topped with the potatoes. It did not lack flavour, but it was missing so much...like onions, freshly chopped herbs, more sauce...not a bigger serving size but more substance.<br/><br/>Meatloaf: the vegetables served with the meatloaf were tasty, but the meatloaf was served warm instead of hot and warm meatloaf is just not appetizing<br/><br/>Cookie Ice Cream Sandwich: Okay the ice cream in this cookie sandwich is quality which scores major bonus points BUT the menu said homemade caramel sauce and we got cheap chocolate sauce squirted on our ice cream...and no explanation...what's up?<br/><br/>Service: average<br/><br/>Price: If the food was a bit tastier then the price would be appropriate

I wanted to try Blue Plate since I saw them online 2 years ago. We made the trip to Edmonton for Maroon 5 and some good eats. <br/>Prompt, friendly service. Funky open decor. Yummy food. My daugher and I shared the Elk and Bison burger with a side of Mac and Cheese and the house salad. The burger has bacon in it so it's not dry at all and was cooked perfectly. The free toppings were tasty but we also added provalone and mushrooms, which it probably didn't even need. The salad said chick peas and they came roasted! So perfect that we are going to steal that idea for home. <br/>BF had Mac and Cheese and it was cheesy and yummy with generous amount of hot Italian sausage. <br/>Coffee was delicious as was the fresh Strawberry Lemonade I had. <br/>Only bummer was brunch is only served on the weekends so we didn't get to try the great sounding egg dishes.

So This is Goodbye.... I've been going on and off for many years and granted the only thing I would have for a year were the enchiladas (which were dellicious), I've found it really slumping over the last couple years. Last decent meal I had was probably just over a year ago when I had a mole special, it was good enough for me to move past previous dissapointment. But over the last year and a half I have to put the 3 strike policy in effect. <br/><br/>Stike 1 - We took my folks for brunch on a saturday when the farmer's market was going, and really sold the blue plate on it's healthy and tasty options. 2 of the 4 dishes were sloppy, the eggs weren't cooked as requested. It happens from time to time I guess, but it's hard to really overcook or undercook an egg and not notice.<br/><br/>Strike 2 - A combination of a couple bland tasting meals. (Sheppard's pie was the one I remember, and also left hungry after it)<br/><br/>Strike 3 - Most recent visit, where I opted for the elk / bison burger and thought I'd give the world famous mac n cheese a try on the side. Mac n cheese had no cheese but a bit of the cream sauce, it was okish. Not worth the $3.50charge. 3 cents worth of pasta in a bit of cream shouldn't cost that much. The burger was bland and fixings were tired, bun was a ho hum thing that could have come from the 7 - 11 on the corner down the street. It was also me giving the burger a second shot, since I remember not being blown away, but we love the blue plate, so thought we'd give it a try.<br/><br/>The menu hasn't seemed to have changed or offer anything exciting in a while, and the food quality is constistantly slipping, and for $20 a plate, I can think of some better options.<br/><br/>So, that's it, that's all. Always great service, good environment, but turning out to be overpriced, and not great quality. There's too much around the area that delivers to waste money on an unsatisfying meal. Hope they pick it up.

Loved it.. We went on NYE so it was fairly busy, The waiter forgot to ask what sides we wanted, took about 5 mins to get our wine, but the food was amazing, Best pasta in a long time!!!

Not that gluten free friendly. Strongly pushed for gluten free dining. 3 items on the menu were, one had mushrooms (common allergy). Our glasses were dirty. My familys meals seamed to be fine but my chicken was rather burnt. Would not recommend.

Just wonderful. I ordered their Mac&Cheese. I asked to put mushrooms in it and it was so tasty. Taoist and Texture and smell was everything I desired in a huge portion of Mac&Cheese. Tomato's on top were a pleasant surprise. Waders were real, not fake. Genuine and nice. Very good atmosphere and excellent ambiance. Candle light with a old Chicago seventies theme. Wonderful for all your hipster vegan friends to get together and have something tasty to eat and have a good time.

Food was good but not a lot of choice. I ordered the vegetarian Shepard's Pie. Very good! They also carry Glutenberg Blonde beer which is a nice tasting GF beer.

Still a great place to eat. Ignore the naysayers, this diner retains the same good food, great vibe and genial service it's had for years. There's a reason why places like this somehow survive this long in the cut-throat restaurant trade. And it's not because they consistently undercook some epicure's breakfast eggs. Try the Apple and Sage Pork Chop. It's great and it's a bargain. Try the meat loaf. The salmon spring rolls are sensational. They deserve credit as well for pushing the envelope on some exotic daily specials. Kudos Blue Plate.
BAllen23
Sadly, they've gone downhill.... Used to be our favourite place for brunch, now we will never be back. The side bowl of fruit you can order for $3 consisted of two tiny pieces of watermelon and two little slices of orange. The breakfast sausage is now your typically disgusting breakfast sausage, and they charge $5 for two tiny sausages. They no longer have a stuffed flavour pancake for the weekend (there's a permanent one on their menu). To be honest, this is so sad... it's so clear that they are cutting corners for the purpose of profit (I assume to offset some increased expense). They are just going to lose customers. To Urban Diner I go.

Once a great diner, now a disappointment. Me and my girlfriend used to love this place, been many many times before. Always great food and excellent service. Until this time, on August 31 2014. It seems that quality has gone down markedly since my last visit. <br/><br/>The breakfast potatoes used to be flavourful, perfectly cooked, and well seasoned. On this visit, they were bland, unseasoned seemingly out of the box sysco panfries. Pancakes were a severe disappointment, adequately cooked but tasted the same as something made from Walmart dry batter. <br/><br/>Breakfast skillet was nothing as I remembered, all the ingredients were there but the taste and texture was off, as if it was a pre-packaged sysco dish. Also, the tortillas were the blandest thing I have tasted in years. <br/><br/>Overall, very disappointed, one of our staple good food joints has fallen.

First time for me on Sunday for brunch. For a small menu, the food should be a lot better than what it is. Eggs Benedict was disgusting. I nearly asked for a steak knife to cut through the eggs, they were more like golf balls. The "jalopeano bacon" had no heat to it, and was very dry even under the dreadful hollandaise sauce. The English muffins were soggy from all the sauce and were prob sitting on the pass for too long before getting to the table. My family also ordered pancakes and they were more like sponge cakes. Huge pancakes but very dense and no flavour. The side of bacon came out dripping in fat and was sent back to crisp up. I didn't expect it to be thrown in to a deep fryer and returned 30 sec later. Awful. <br/><br/>I have heard this place once was an excellent place to go. Sadly, this seems to be a LONG time ago. Nothing short of disgusting.

So went to Blue Plate for brunch around 2 pm...Was told had to hurry and order as the lunch menu was starting...Was given both menus...Waiting for a friend we had time to look over both menus...2 of us decided on meatloaf sandwich (lunch menu)..The last one arrived and wanted bacon and eggs...(brunch menu)...When the waitress arrived we asked if this was possible...Apparently not...We were advised that the bacon and eggs would be made and if we waited 15 minutes then we could have our lunch selection....Diner..???...Really...As we were sitting deciding what we should order the "Owner" decided to come over...We were asked if we had ever worked in a restaurant..???...Specifically a kitchen...Then went on to lecture us about the difficulty of making 2 sandwiches along with breakfast..All the while shaking her finger at us..!!!.We were then told not to stress out it was just "eggs"...Nice...Got up and left...Ended up at the Urban Diner...which was happier and cleaner with delicious meatloaf burger and eggs...Thanks Blue Plate...Won't be back...No Stress....lol

Went there for brunch. Had the eggs Benedict with jalapeño bacon. The entire thing was slapped together with the most insipid sauce and what looked like cooked ham. In fact, cooked ham has better and more taste. Very disappointing meal. The service was not great but she was apologetic and seemed to be trying her best. The kitchen needs a serious review of what they are putting out there at $14 per plate. Very poor an dun satisfying experience. Not planning to go back.

Quality has gone down prices up. I tried the pork and it was dry and overcooked. Veggies were very nice assortment and well prepared. My wife's storlfry was good with lots of chicken that was sadly overcooked and tough. The cake was good except the icing way too sweet. <br/><br/>Wine, drinks and coffee over priced. <br/><br/>Maybe I should stick to the diner dishes I have always liked there. Mac and cheese, meatloaf burgers. I may try breakfast again but will me careful on the choices. <br/><br/>I'm willing to give them another chance but my wife is not.

Went here for the first and last time this morning <br/>My friend was given the incorrect meal not once but twice. So I was done eating by the time he got his. Nothing worse than going out to eat and having someone watch you eat while they wait for theirs and then having to sit and watch them eat. <br/>Service was slow food was so overpriced and not good <br/>Don't know how this place has good ratings ?

Best Mac and cheese you will have in your entire life . I never order mac and cheese but when I'm here I absolutely have to! It is devine. Plus they have tons of different beer options. Love this place!!!

Pleasent atmospher, polite & attentive staff, delicious food! A great place for date night.

I've noticed how their Urbanspoon rating has gone down, so I wanted to check it out for myself. It was a great date night restaurant, great service, good food.

The reviews by restaurant reviewers were correct.. Food reviewers gave favourable reviews about the Blue Plate Diner. Our experience affirmed their reviews. The service was courteous and attentive. The breakfast menu gave us the option of choosing small adult portions and the homemade jam was very good. I also like that the owner buys from local producers. We were very pleased.

Not so Good. I was referred to this place by a friend. But it just wasn't very good. In all fairness I got a veggie burger and in my experience those can be hard to pull off, its not like good old get-what-you-paid-for ground beef. But the veggie patty was just gross. It was mushy and tasted off. It was one of the worst attempts at a veggie burger I have ever had. The fixings, from what I could tell would have been ok on a regular burger. I also got the salad which was boring as heck and not very flavorful. Topped the meal off with an espresso, but that to, was a disappointment, they charge a stiff price for espresso and it didn't even have crema.<br/>The only thing I can say to this places credit is that the fellow had as a server was pretty good. Attentive and helpful though not overly informed.
Towntress
Once upon a time this place had amazing food, now it's like the person who created the menu had zero culinary experience prior. I've came back a few times because of the way it used to be (fresh ingredients, creative entrees), but no more as everything I've ordered has been pretty gross. (Meatloaf sandwich tasted old and flavorless; grilled vegetable sandwich was soggy and the cheese made my stomach turn). Please get your act together, Blue Plate, and quit relying on your trendy hipster locale as an excuse not to provide quality.
PrairieSky
Outrageous and Awful. Is it possible to give negative stars? Erratic service, food on one plate that ranged in temperature from polar ice cap to magma, a server that was pleasant to the males and barely concealed contempt to the females, no offer of refills on hot water for tea, warm cookie dessert that was fresh from the freezer.<br/><br/>And the kicker? Berating one of our group for not giving a tip. <br/>"Was the food or the service not good?" <br/>"I'm not the cook, so don't blame me for the food"<br/>"There are only two servers tonite" (there was only 10 diners at the time we were there)<br/>"You can keep your money"<br/>"Don't come back"<br/><br/>Wow. It was like a scene from a Quentin Tarantino movie. Utterly outrageous, insulting, and the food was not the greatest either. Sage and Apple porckchop was overwhelmed by the sage. Dry overcooked salmon. Basmati rice pilaf that was a mound of coolish basmati rice. Burnt oversalted pita strips as the side of a mediocre spicy peanut soup. Smile from the server one moment, and an eye rolling sneer the next. <br/><br/>Avoid this overpriced comedy skit.
Elvi540
Bad service and mediocre food for high price. We had a large group so there was an auto-gratuity of 18%. The server wanted everyone to remain in their seats to help with the ordering process. However, when the food did come, I did not feel there was any sense of order. I had the bison burger with mac and cheese side. The bison burger was smaller than a Big Mac and did not fill me up. It was also dry and was mediocre at best. The mac and cheese was pretty good but the portion was small as well. Overall, my experience was quite disappointing. I would not recommend Blue Plate Diner especially for larger groups.

Not Suitable For Large Parties. I had been to Blue Plate for breakfast before and thought it was fantastic. We decided to give it a shot for dinner for a group of 30 people. We were provided 2 servers and seating went smoothly. We were constantly reminded to stay in our seats in order to help out the servers with the orders. Our party had no issues with that. When it came time to order appetizers our server for one table was no where to be seen. By the time our server got our orders, our other group had already finished and was moving onto entrees. Drink orders were a mess because our server forgot drinks, disappeared on us a few times when she went to check what was going on. When it came time to our entree, the birthday boy did not receive his food until everyone was served dessert. We asked what the issue was with our server and she wasn't able to give us any kind of answer. To the credit of the restaurant, they did comp his food however it left a sour taste in his mouth as he was still eating when people started to pay for the bill. The worst part of the night was when the server who had insisted we stay in our seats to sort out food orders did a terrible job of distributing the bill. In the end she was short because she didn't charge the person with that order. Of course the birthday boy had to cover that even though he didn't order it. It was an overall terrible experience when it came to service and to be fair it was only one server that did a poor job. The food was average and we would not recommend this place for dinner.

Wonderful atmosphere. We all ordered the special - mussels - and it was delicious. Any time I have ordered the special has been very good. Service was perfect pace and friendly. Great neighborhood restaurant. Very cozy.

Great Lunch!!. Reliable food and service, this is a great place for lunch downtown.

Comfort food. I love this place. The food is cooked well, and all locally sourced ingredients. Great place to go when you are craving that home cooked feel.

Came here for lunch on family day. Nice decor and vibe. Chic but warm, and nice food for a reasonable price. Received excellent service from Richard, and will definitely be back.

Extremely slow service and disapointing food.. A group of 5 of us went to the Blue Plate Diner today for a work lunch. We had a reservation at noon and our table was ready or us. It went down hill from there. Upon taking our order, we waited for our food...and waited...and waited some more. Finally at about 12:45 our waiter let us know that our food should be out "right away" and that there was a large table who had held up the kitchen (the restaurant is small - you can see all the tables. We could not identify said large table. Also, it was lunch time on a Friday. I feel like a restaurant should expect to be busy at this time). We asked that our food be packed up to go because at this point there wasn't enough time for us to actually eat it before trying to get back to the office. Packing up the food and paying the bills took about another 15 minutes. All in all, we left after more than an hour of being in the restaurant without actually having gotten to eat anything! <br/><br/>While we already had a pretty bad impression of the restaurant, we may have been able to get over the service if the food had been any good. It was very disappointing. The burgers were all burnt or dry and the vegetable sandwich was so overcooked the bread was hard to chew. <br/><br/>I had been to the Diner once before for brunch and while the service was fine at that time, the food was mediocre. All in all I will not be going back to the Diner and I would strongly warn against going for a time-limited lunch.

Blue Plate Diner has lost its chef and it shows. What a disappointment, we've been coming here for years and had a very lacklustre dinner. Can't believe the slop they served was a veggie curry, everything was soggy and the curry was out of a jar. Blue Plate get it together!

Character and good food. I truly don't understand why this place doesn't have a better rating. We've been going here for years and it's perfect! The coffee is amazing and the breakfast items are always fantastic. Definitely try them out.

Been here many times.... I have been to the Blue Plate many times... AND I LOVE IT! Great food, good service. Mac is my favorit!

All (vegen) hype, no taste. Service - sloooooooowwwwww<br/>Kitchen - slooooooooooowwwwwwwweeeeerrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr<br/>Prices - HIGH! HIGH HIGH!<br/>Room - unkept<br/>Flavor - What flavor?<br/><br/>The vegan dishes are moist and flavorless, the meat dishes are dry and over cooked.<br/><br/>I've had great vegan food, this is not it.<br/><br/>I wonder how many of thumbs ups are purely the vegan turnout.

Basic but ok. Good variety.

I love this place!! The food is amazing and the service is fun, but if you want a really good right make sure you get Richard. He's the best waiter I've ever had and hes the sweetest person there.

The brunch portions are way to small! I'd rather go somewhere I get my money's worth

Bday dinner. I took my hubby to the blue plate diner for his bday. I wanted to take him somewhere nice that we've never been. The lady on the phone said its a restaurant where we could dress up or dress casual. We dressed up. The restaurant had some cool décor but looks a little old. In need of some renovations. Bathroom looked pretty old. Service wasn't great. Waitress barely came by. My hubby needed to go look for staff in order to get and pay our bill. Someone else took our payment as our waitress had an issue with another customer. We ordered 2 bison burgers, one with fries, one with mac and cheese. Bison burgers were okay, but not much different than the ones we've bought at safeway. Fries were alright, mac and cheese was delicious. I recommend that for sure. Experience was so so, probably wont be back at least not anytime soon. Experience was nothing special.

Brunch was delicious! I had the eggs benny and my friend had the wrap special. Both came out quickly and steaming hot, but the best part was definitely the service! Seriously the best service I've ever had in Edmonton. Plus our server had wicked curly hair. Will definitely be back.

My experience - doesn't recommend. Having only recently heard about this restaurant through owners calculated risk attempt to gain free advertising, thought I'd take a couple of friends to see what's the dining real experience. Surprised that place was grubby and vegetarian dishes were served lukewarm. Won't return.

Don't even need to write a review. This place is fantastic.

Relaxed and Good. Visiting downtown Edmonton from another city with much more limited vegan restaurant options I was happy to find a place that was open late for dinner, felt relaxed and was within walking distance from our hotel. Our group shared some starters. The green onion cakes were tasty, though a tad greasy. The rosemary salt french fries were good but not really any rosemary flavor. I had the lentil loaf with miso gravy. The texture was nice and it tasted good though a bit too strongly of bread crumbs and the gravy tasted awesome but kind of looked unappealing. The veggies on the side were amazing - just simply prepared but done so right. Dijon mashed potatoes were also pretty good. Overall we were happy with our meals. There was no vegan dessert option because they were out of tofu.

Perfect little dinner on their patio. Caesar salad with grilled salmon = yum-o!

Terrible service. Waited for our brunch from 11:15 am to 12:20 pm and it still didn't arrive. When we complained to the owner, rather then apologizing, she had the audacity to ask us if we've ever ran a restaurant and lecture us on running a restaurant. Needless to say, we left hungry and are not coming back.

Vegetarians can do better. I won't add to the current slate of reviews decrying the terrible service, the mediocre food and the high prices. I will say that Edmonton vegetarians can certainly do better. I know, I know, there are so few places that offer unique vegetarian food, what is a poor hipster to do if one can't stand in line for hours waiting to be treated like that second-hand three wolf moon shirt? Fear not, I say, for there are far better and I dare say, less expensive vegetarian restaurants in our fair city! Leave Blue Plate to the rig-pig wives with their bottomless wallets. They don't know true cuisine, they're too busy vandalizing "no homeless" on churches to truly understand. And sweet Jesus, the coffee is awful. I wouldn't even drink it ironically.

In dire need of proper management! I have been going to Blue Plate Diner for years, up until about a year ago it was always a pleasant experience. Great atmosphere, unique decor, friendly staff & the food, THE FOOD- divine! My last few experiences, however have been less than satisfactory. There is no systematic approach, hosts/ waiters/bus boys (or their female counter parts) are running around with their heads cut off. Bumping into one another, or their cliental, wait times are atrocious & the food, although tasty, is poorly presented. I fear the once great reputation of Blue Plate is diminishing. Nothing some strong leadership and industry insight couldn't fix. I just hope it's not too late!

Not worth the hype. After hearing the great buzz and seeing the daily line-up out the door during lunch hour, I decided to go to the Blue Plate Diner last week for lunch with a friend. He ordered the tuna melt and I had the vegetarian panini, both with side salad. My friend said that the tuna melt was boring and lacked flavour and he could have made it better at home, he wasn't a fan of the salad either. The vegetarian panini was ok but definitely not fantastic though, I did really like the salad with dried cherries or maybe cranberries yumm. I thought the food was over priced for the quality so I probably won't be back for lunch but may try out the dinner menu some evening after working late.

Went for dinner...nice atmosphere, yummy cafe mocha, but the food was just ok. Not worth going back for...maybe the breakfasts are better?

Underwhelming. Heard so many good things about Blue Plate and was kind of taken aback at the grubby look of the interior (and the grubby feel of the table tops). Food very bland - ordered Rosemary Fries and we were hard pressed to find any rosemary flavour. The beef burger was OK, but for $16 overpriced. My friend had the "real" shepherd's pie - it did not taste fresh - maybe like something heated up in a microwave. Caesar salad was OK.

Gonzo is Good. On August 3rd I had the Gonzo plate for $17 which included three eggs, two Irving's Farm fresh sausages, three bacon, multigrain toast, and grilled grapefruit. The sausages were the hit of the plate! Even though the server forgot the toast, I still give the Gonzo plate and Blue Plate Diner two thumbs up!

Friendly staff and cozy decor. Went to Blue Plate Diner for supper and ordered the shepherds pie and tomato vodka soup. My friends also ordered the soup, as well as the mac n cheese, garden salad, lentil loaf, and pan seared shrimp. The food came out speedily and in big portions. The staff was really friendly and prompt. <br/>The food however....just didn't hit it for me unfortunately. With the exception of the soup (one of the best tasting tomato soups I've had), the rest of our entrees just didn't impress our taste buds all that much I'm sad to say. <br/>Nevertheless, I wanted to give Blue Plate another try, so I went back there a few days after, this time for lunch. I ordered the penne puttanesca with sausage and my friend ordered the pan-seared salmon; for dessert we had the beet cake and ice cream sandwich. For what it's worth, I don't think the food here is as awful as some reviewers may suggest it to be. Granted I don't think the food is particularly outstanding from what we've tried so far...but it still tastes alright and I can't help but applaud its efforts to be unique (there is a great selection of vegetarian items that our vegan friend really appreciated!). If not for the food primarily, but for the location/ friendly staff/ quaint atmosphere this restaurant provides, I would come back again :)

Ohhhh I wanted to like this place but, ahhhh I don't know, I ordered the vegan lasagna and frankly it was terrible, my server was super nice, she asked if I wanted something different, I said no cause I had to go, I ordered the Mac and cheese to go, for dinner at work and well<br/>That wasn't very good either :(<br/><br/>I will go back and give it another go, my server was awesome and even through I didn't ask, she discounted some of my food which was mighty nice....

Poor breakfast! Sausages cold, eggs poached solid even though requested medium, smallest bacon rashers I have ever seen.

Didn't Enjoy My Breakfast. I decided to change things up by venturing downtown for breakfast. I went to the Blue Plate Diner yesterday for Sunday brunch. My friend and I were seated immediately. We both had the Blue Plate special, which is the basic breakfast consisting of eggs, toast, potatoes, and sausage. The sausage arrived cold and dry. I informed our server and she gave us each a new sausage which came out hot, but still dry. Also, the potatoes were bland. And for $13, it would have been nice to get two pieces of toast, instead of just one! On a positive note, our server was attentive, refilling our coffee many times. I'll give this place another try, but not for a while.

2X Down - Verdict - Bland. Nice atmosphere, but it doesn't make up for the bland food. Mac N' Cheese - skip this one, no flavor, cheap noodles, a overpriced. <br/><br/>Tried again two days later, Jambalaya, 5/10, also bland.<br/><br/>Sangria, since when does it come as red wine and ice with two lemons on the side? Pass.<br/><br/>Not sure why there are line ups all the time - I'd skip this one, go to the Clever Rabbit on 124th if you want good food, similr style.

Threw away my leftovers. Food was pretty good. Big portion. I only eat half my sandwich. I get the rest for take-away. Have a coffee. Forget my container when I leave. Go back 5 minutes later and they tell me it was thrown away. All they say was 'sorry'.

Vegetarian Heaven. There are so many options for veg eaters and the restaurant atmosphere is great. They have a variety of things to choose from and every item is unique. When I was there they had beet cake as a desert option and I tried remaking it at home because I was obsessed. I recommend this restaurant to everyone I know. :) Happy Eating!

Blue Plate Diner has brilliant table service but it seems under staffed at times. The servers are personable and friendly. Truth is, I'm not totally happy with the quality of the food and the presentation of the plates. Often times it comes to my table and the presentation is messy and the food is boringly cold. Its an important stop to make in Edmonton. Hit or miss food wise.

CARNIVAL FOOD. I’ve been going to blue plate for quite some time and it has been really going down hill recently. I have absolutely loved the atmosphere and the service has always been great (however, it can get very packed from time to time). The new menus seem to be a bunch of frat boy sandwiches and carnival food. <br/> Sure I enjoy eating a meatloaf sandwich once or joke with my date about “Fat Elvis” for bunch (which is bacon, jam, and peanut butter sandwhich.) But seriously at the end of the day it is overpriced and underwhelming. For example they have $16 PLAIN burger, which as far as I have been able to find out is just plain old Alberta Beef (if you want a good cheaper burger with everything go to NEXT ACT). <br/> For the vegetarians, I am pretty certain every vegetarian meal is just another meal they take the meat out of. In fact, if you are vegetarian or want to go with a vegetarian just don’t. They are absolutely no vegetarian options. <br/> If you want somewhere to stop by for some appetizers, a drink or two, with great service, Blue Plate is definitely a place to go. If you want a culinary adventure, go to Next Act, Sugar Bowl, Tres Carnales, MRKT, Corse 32 or a place that can make a good meal that is worth the price.

Prepare to Wait. Doesn't matter what time I've been there, the service has always been sloppy and sub-par. I've given it 4 tries. 3 times the food has been good, one time it was terrible. And they're usually out of something that I want to order. I'll never go back. The ambiance and food are generally good though, but the service is just terrible.

Like. Love the laid back ambience and their veggie burger. But the food wasn't quite as good as I remembered the last time I went, hope it's just a temporary occurance

I wanted to like this place, but the service was awful and I highly doubt I'll be back. The food came out fine, or at least average. However our server barely spoke to us and brought out the bill without asking while I was still eating my meal. Rude!

My friend and I called in around 9:45pm on a Wednesday to place an order for pick up. She specified that she has a severe gluten allergy and ordered the shrimp and steak. We chose Blue Plate because she has never had a reaction to their food. The girl that took the order acknowledged the allergy and said that they would be closing soon, at 11pm, and we said we would be there well before then. After paying for the $40 meal, leaving and seeing that there was no cutlery or napkins, my friend had a very intense allergic reaction. Did the server not care to give the cook the allergy note? Or did the cook not care because it was an hour and a half until close? <br/><br/>I've always noted the apathetic attitude of the servers and begrudgingly accepted it as a part of the 'hipster' scene the diner was chasing, but the snooty attitude of the server and the carelessness of the allergy has officially (and finally) ended my reoccurring visits to Blue Plate.<br/>I give it a thumbs up for locational convenience but that is it.

Charming and delicious. This is one of the real gems of Edmonton. I have been there twice, and the atmosphere is unique, warm, with beautiful lighting, and very good service. My partner and I had green onion cakes to start (hot when brought to the table) and I had the lentil and nut loaf. So good! I left quite full, and the bill was light. The next time I went with a group of friends for brunch, and it was an equally fantastic experience. Mediterranean breakfast was delish!

Average diner fare. Grilled cornbread is delicious, but mac & cheese doesn't have enough sauce, nor could you really tell what kind of cheese was in there. Chopped tomatoes on top are superfluous. Grilled veg sandwich is supposed to have portabello mushrooms but contained small crimini mushrooms instead. The goat cheese in this sandwich is tangy but would benefit from the absence of red peppers. Stick to plain goat cheese, please. Ok coffee, reasonable prices, but I wouldn't have lined up at the door for this food, as many folks seemed to do.

Disappointed. I went here April 19th for lunch with 4 other people. We had a reservation and were able to get seated right away but the service was very slow. Actually, I shoudn't say service - we got refills on beverages but the food took forever. Because of the open atmosphere the place was crazy loud, it was definately not the place to have good conversation. When the food arrived no one was too happy with it. I had the tuna salad and it seemed like they just put tuna on a piece of bread with a chunk of cheese. There were no onions or flavors and it was very dry with the corners of my bread being burnt. I'm actually quite suprised this place is as busy as it is with so many other delicious options downtown.

Ugly, on purpose. And not only n a charming way. Would have let that slide if I left feeling anything but still hungry and disappointed. Food was delicious, portions were small and therefor overpriced.
