Review The Glass Monkey - Edmonton

You know, it is not every day you walk into a place and get the opportunity to order something that has become a me me from Kitchen Nightmares, but here you can. Grilled Lettuce! (The full episode is on youtube) Over all the food is mostly just fine, and they seem to have jacked the prices from decent value to LOL YOU ARE KIDDING ME. Service was pretty good once she realized we were not their for a timed event.

It's a cute restaurant in the neighborhood that the quality of food and nice services are guaranteed. It's got that unique local friendliness. All staff were super friendly and nice including those who answered our phone, who sat us and who served us. We were very happy about the menu our server Rick recommended and services he provided. I am pregnant and wanted to have some nice virgin cocktail other than mojito and he offered sangria that is substituted with pomegranate juice and oh boy it was delicious!! Also, all the food we ordered were delicious. You must try their mushroom pizza. The taste of the fresh ingredients with a touch of truffle oil was great. The pate and halibut fish cake were also great. They have a nicely set up patio that we want to try next time. We originally went there to sit in their patio but we decided to stay inside since the inside set up was also very romantic and came with more comfy chairs.

We are quite glad that this place has re opened now with the third wave of the pandemic over. We once again had an excellent dining experience at Glass Monkey. This place exemplifies both high quality ingredients of European trattoria-styling while still maintaining a laid back Canadian feel of a local pub eatery. Gastropub is more than apt a term to describe this joint! From the moment the usher welcomed us in there was a warm and bustling atmosphere in the restaurant. Rick carried us through the menu items and Specials with enthusiasm and efficiency, such as any person with intimate of the knowledge of the menu should have, recommending his favourites and highlighting popular items. He was very professional and entertaining. We also received warm welcomes and conversation from Janine. Both the patio and inside tables were excellent options.

Intimate table setting, excellent service and extensive wine list. The menu is tight but provides good choices. Our meals were very well prepared and presented, very tasty. No CoVid protections between servers, clients or other staff was visible.

As usual the visit was outstanding! My braised pork cheeks were a culinary experience not to be missed! My husband's scallop and shrimp risotto was a symphony of wonderful tastes and aromas! The waiter recommended a thoroughly delightful wine to suit my very narrow range of preferences. All of this impeccable service and offerings on a very busy night that saw a Ukrainian band raising funds(along with TGM) for the Ukraine & celebrating some important birthdays! Such an accomplished restaurant with such a big heart!💙💛

We brought four kids out for dinner tonight and they were treated like kings and queens. The most amazing service we’ve had. Highlights of the meal were the morel mushrooms on toast and the lamb shank. They really went above and beyond and we had a wonderful evening. Thank you! We will be back. Next time we will bike!

We stopped by on a whim for lunch after driving by and thinking it looked cute. My boyfriend had “the best burger he’s ever had” and I had the noodle bowl. Just wow. Highly recommend and can’t wait to try the dinner menu.

My wife and I decided to try this restaurant after hearing it come up in conversation a few times. Valentine's Day was the day. Our initial impression; the dining room was a little cramped (constant bumping into my elbows from passers by), but even so it was inviting since the staff made it their priority to make you feel tended to. I ordered the grilled Ceasar salad, which was decent, but nothing to marvel about. I do wish they would use a slightly longer dish to present it, since the leaves were hanging over the edge of the plate, and dragged along the table as the server maneuvered it into place. Not the best impression during a pandemic when everyone is fairly germ-conscious. My wife's starter was the grilled broccoli - again, very simple without anything outstanding. She then had the Chinook Salmon with a Thai Curry sauce, steamed vegetables and rice on the side. The cook on the fish was good, but overall the flavor was underwhelming. For my main, I had the seafood risotto. The portion size was moderate, but again, the flavor was pretty anemic. For a rice entre offering 5 shrimp and 3 scallops, this $35 dish would be more appropriately priced at about $25. Further to this, we each had a couple of iced teas (we don't drink). The iced teas were very good. Altogether, the meal came out to $107. In our opinion, an overpriced meal that we'll likely forget by tomorrow. I will stress however, that the staff were very professional and friendly throughout. We'd be back if they announced a new chef.

Dropped in on a Monday night with friends for a bite to eat. Had the butternut soup of the day and the pulled pork taco special. I wasn't up for a big meal and chose just the one taco. Soup and taco were just the right amount. The others shared a beet salad and the mushroom pizza with slices of tomato on top. And one salmon meal. All very tasty. We all shared Jack's bread pudding for the final delicious ending to a fun time.<br/>As for the drinks; the beer list is open to many choices and the wine choices kept the ladies happy.<br/>Always a great choice when you're in the mood to go out for supper.

Last week I went to Glass Monkey for the first time. I had a bit of time to kill before my plans so we just went in for a quick drink and some appetizers. They are located in a small strip so there is an ample amount of parking. Housemade Ricotta. First, we got their housemade ricotta, which comes with an apricot chutney, and sunflower seeds. This is served along side some bread. Overall, and pretty light and easy dish to share. I think the bread could have been toasted a little bit, but overall, really easy and good to eat. Great appetizer for only $5.50!

Extremely friendly staff, great food and relaxing patio for a nice evening. Nice selection of adult drinks paired with lite snacks or large plates.

Dinner at the glass monkey. Restaurant is busy for a Wednesday night. Hosted and wait staff are friendly and quick to serve. Sea breeze, alley Kat and red wine to start. Followed by five cold shareables, beet and arugula salad, salt and pepper chicken wings, all to share. Cold shareable are small potions to try. The size of tapas. Humus, kettle chips, ricotta, pickles, parsnip purée served with bread and gluten free crackers. Beet salad is beets covered with greens and the chicken wings come with token carrots and celery with a side of ranch. Flavors are above average. <br/>Dessert is gluten free cheese cake and bread pudding. Cheese cake is great. Bread pudding is served warm and is garnished with whip cream, average flavor. <br/>Service was great throughout our meal, conversations, jokes, answering our questions from all staff who walked by our table.

My girlfriend and I really enjoyed Glass Monkey, we sat at the bar and the servers were very nice, friendly and provided excellent service. When the food came out, I was delightfully surprised by the large portions for the price I paid. Overall, I would definitely recommend this place.

We really enjoyed our visit to Glass Monkey. The patio was full upon arrival but looked so beautiful that it's on my hit list for next time for sure. Food was just awesome and we loved the salmon mouse. Extensive wine list and great ambiance. The only hiccup was waitress had the personality of a stick but all other staff were very efficient and friendly. Recommend and going back asap.

Poutine, Duck Mac & Cheese, Hot Chicken Wings, Homemade Pappardelle, Jack’s Grill Bread Pudding<br/><br/><br/>Glass Monkey is a fairly tasty southside gastropub. Poutine was pretty standard with some good curds and a ton of gravy. The Duck Mac & Cheese was a must try for any M&C fans, the duck just sits deliciously there in that gooey mess waiting to be devoured. Hot wings were a miss for me, nothing special, not even celery sticks and ranch. Probably wouldn’t have got those wings if it weren’t half off that night. Pappardelle was something special though. Homemade pasta with slow roasted pork shoulder and wild mushrooms...mmmpf, so tasty. It was recommended we try this bread pudding and it was a good recommendation. Not to sweet and overall enjoyable. <br/><br/><br/>Glass Monkey is located on 111st and 58th ave, and is a nice little gastropub. A gastropub being a bar that serves high-end beer and food (shoutout to wikipedia). This place just does that with a few misses, however the service is great and ambiance is sophisticatedly relaxed. <br/><br/><br/>Sal says: Just Try it<br/><br/>@melisspur says: Food was just alright but the service was on point<br/><br/>@jkimcheee says: Just try. The ambiance and service makes it worth a visit for a drink or two after wasabi dins<br/><br/>@zombiepiglet says: Good service, chill environment, enticing menu food sort of lived up to my expectations. Poutine had lots of cheese curds so that was nice<br/><br/>#yegeats #yeg #yegfood #food #foodie #foodporn #foodgasm #foodpics #foodstagram #instafood #delicious #hungry #yummy  #dinner #lunch #gastropub

From making reservations, to leaving after paying the bill, dining at the Glass Monkey was a great experience. We started with the charcuterie and cheese boards, and chose our drinks from a menu that offers a great array of beer, both artisanal and commercial. We then each had some tasty, satisfying entrees that ended with espresso and cappuccinos. Although pricier than other gastropubs, we feel that we paid for the unique Glass Monkey experience - the friendly, outstanding service, the welcoming atmosphere, the food and drink. This is a great place for groups as the energy is high and lively. We had a great time, and will definitely return!

I've been here a couple times now. I really enjoy the food and service is great! I enjoy ordering a variety of the small plates and sharing it with the people I'm dining it. It allow me to try a variety of things.

Food was amazing! Great hot wings & the Moroccan Lamb was tender. Was happy to take home lots of leftovers. Our waiter was gracious, and gave great recommendations for both food and drinks. I didn`t have room for dessert, but that gives us a reason to go back again. Best dinner out I've had in a long time, this place now tops our list of favourite Edmonton date night places!

I came to Glass Monkey for a private birthday function, and I'm blown away at how delicious the food was. The butternut squash soup was to die for, and the mashed potato's were next level. <br/><br/>I also had the Chinook salmon and braised beef brisket which I could have eaten all day. They were both so tender I cut them with a fork! <br/><br/>I highly recommend this place. The establishment was clean and well kept (the bathrooms even had towels - real towels), and they had Magners cider which benefits my beer allergy. <br/><br/>

Cheese plate was amazing; the local Edam paired exceptionally well with the house pickled onions. Double cream Brie was great with their apricot chutney. Wine selection was pretty good. My husband has the chef special- lamb shank with couscous: I had their burger which again was great. Warm chocolate cake was a nice ending. Atmosphere was ok, if not a tad loud. We'd go back again for sure.

Amazing new place! The staff were so friendly and the bartender really knew his stuff. I recommend the tagliettelle and the chocolate cake-so good! Our server was very friendly and by the end of our dinner I felt as if she was had known us for years. I will definitely be coming back!

Have gone for dinner for 2, group of 8 and a party of 30. Meals and service were superb each time. They've kept some of the Jack's favorites, including the beef carpaccio and bread pudding. Personal fave is the butter chicken which was a special on one of the nights (should be a regular menu item - terrific!). Staff are friendly and accommodating, wine list extensive and reasonable, and good for all occasions.

Food was all right, but nothing special or unique. Most disappointing was the male waiter who was rude, and face showed obvious unprofessionalism when we didn't order alcohol. He continued to wait on our table, but not nearly as well as other tables around us. We usually get a drink but just didn't want one last minute. Won't return as the service turned us off, and the food isn't enough of a pull to bring us back.

What a find! We had the opportunity to visit the Glass Monkey last night, and we will be back. The interior was classy and cozy, and there was a good mix of couples, groups of friends, and families.<br/><br/>The food was excellent and the service was outstanding.  We sampled a number of the cold plates, boards and fish tacos.  Try the parsnip puree and their homemade pork sausage - both stand outs.  Last nights specials looked amazing, and we will be back to sample more. The wine by the glass was a stand out as well - I like to get a decent glass of wine, and am willing to pay for it.  The beer on tap was interesting and unexpected.  Nice local choices.<br/><br/>I have to say the service was top notch.  I really like the personal touch you get from a local restaurant, and we could not have been treated better. <br/><br/>I had given up hope that we would be able to find anything other than "big box store" restaurants in this city.  This is going to be our new "go to".

Virtually invisible, the glass monkey lives out a very non-descript existence in a strip mall just up the way from Southgate mall, I was interested in trying it out though, just by virtue of the fact that it is close to where my sister lives. Despite the plain and hardly noticeable signage out front, the interior was classy and contemporary. Wine selection was extensive as expected by the name, but it was also expensive, as expected by the fact that its a wine bar. The cost of food was reasonable, but the drinks were in general few bucks more than it ought to have been, not exhorbant, but a tad inequitable compared to some other resto's, even their beers on tap seemed to be at a bit of a premium. The menu has more than I would have expected and I would describe it as 'semi-fine dining' rather than 'bar food'.  I was very pleased by the food which was well prepared and remarkably balanced, the chef knows when to say when on a dish.Pretty good, by the bar was missing that special something to just give it that extra little push for me, that's likely because I admittedly have a poor pallet for wine so I can't really comment on the quality of the wine selection, only the quantity. If you are a wine aficionado I can see this being a fast favourite, but for the average cork-sniffer like me the glass monkey is good, but nothing special.

My wife and I have partaken of the Glass Monkey with friends on several special occasions now. We have all thouroughly enjoyed our experiences there.<br/>Clean. Modern. Trendy.<br/>Well concieved and presented dishes with a unique flair.<br/>Delicious and reasonably priced.<br/>On one occasion a member of our party experienced a very overcooked burger/bun. This was quicky removed from the bill and appropriate reperations were made.<br/>It looks like this gem is quickly becoming one of our new favorite spots!

Went here for my birthday with my mother after finding it on OpenTable. It was fantastic. Our server Andy took great care of us, making great recommendations on which menu items to try and being very personable. We sampled a little bit of everything, having the almonds, Chinook salmon and grill feta to start. These small plates are the perfect size to order a bunch and share with a group. For mains my mother and I split the beet salad and a lamb meatloaf that was one of the specials for the night. Both were tasty. After our meal the owner Rob came to wish me a happy birthday and brought a dessert glass of port on the house for the both of us! It went perfect with the berry crumble. <br/><br/>Overall the atmosphere (Casual, but classy), service, and food was exceptional and we will definitely be trying it again.

Disappointing experience. Food was good, but overpriced for the amount you get. Left feeling hungry. Our waiter was very unfriendly and rude. I mentioned I have an allergy and placed an order for a shared appetizer, he said that would be safe to eat, and later brought out the appetizer and told me I wouldn't be able to eat half of it. He asked if he could substitute our bread with gluten free bread, I mentioned that my allergy is not gluten but dairy, and he brought out a BOX of crackers and asked me to read the ingredients. If I wanted to shop for my food, I'd go to the grocery store. The place was near empty and the waiter watched us eat for the majority of our stay there, and came over far too often. I was uncomfortable for our entire stay, as was my partner. Overall, just not a good experience, I won't be back.

Amazing Food...Amazing Service...We went for a late dinner...Great atmosphere...I had Sausage Mash that was served with a red pepper relish...Excellent...the sausage was rich and juicy served with a creamy mash enabling the relish to cut the richness of it all...Delish...My partner had Spaghetti Bolognese...Definately authentic and filling ...Comforting Happiness ........Again...Delish...So much more on the menu that we both wanted to try...From small plates to large...Service and Room is warm and welcoming and a private outdoor patio that would be Spectacular on a warm summer night...Will Definately be Back...Great Neighborhood find ....Love It.....

Good food and drink. Great menu for beer and wine. We had a few of the smaller menu items and a couple large ones. They were all good but the smaller menu items were our preference. From the outside its not evident, but inside has a very nice atmosphere. I'd go again.

Great food and wine. We ha.... Great food and wine. <br/>We had professional service and ambience was good. Appies were tasty. We were a party of six and everyone loved their main dishes. Lots of flavour. We will go again.

Good food... awkward dude. Came here for valentines for a first night out as "mom and dad"<br/>The food was great HOWEVER every interaction with our waiter was borderline physically painful. We didn't hear the specials which would have definitely changed our orders, he hovered awkwardly while we were eating, left the table cluttered instead of clearing used plates before putting down the entree. We loved our food, but we are seriously disappointed with the level of service for the price. It's unfortunate that it will be the prominent memory of our dining experience.

Not a destination restaurant. If I lived sort of close, or was passing by, I might stop in again. But it's not sufficiently interesting, different or good for its category. Kale salad and Caesar salad: much better elsewhere. Meatballs small plate: Kobe version at lamia were more distinctive. And the pricing on the wine was just plain silly. Our group has no trouble spending money, but we took exception with the wine pricing on principle. That all said, if you go, sit in the lounge area. It is less noisy than the ( connected ) dining room proper.

My favourite local spot!. My boyfriend and I live nearby and frequent this restaurant so often that the manager knows us very well! We have tried almost everything on the menu and have never been disappointed. If they have duck for the special, you MUST try it - it's divine!
Sandy
It just ok, ordered the chicken and wow was it overdone! The biscuit that came with it was harder than a hockey puck. The desserts were so overpriced we left to have coffee and dessert elsewhere! The server was obviously brand new and really rushed us through.

Food Very disappointing!. Nice atmosphere, and server was great. I ordered the margarita pizza which was not good. All crust and a couple dabs of mozzarella cheese, a few pieces of dried tomato and a few slivers of basil. For $15!!! Way better at Original, Joes. My husband had the special, a flatiron steak. Meat was good, but the plate of food was lukewarm.

Great Patio Spot. Stopped by for dinner last night and it was great! It was a sunny day and we came around 630 not realizing they had a patio. We were seated right away, the food was delicious, and the patio had a wonderful ambiance. The music wasn't too loud and although it was a little pricy, it was well worth it.

Neighbourhood feel, enoyable menu. We chose Glass Monkey to regroup with another couple after a fewe years. The venue offered a reasonable beer menu and suitable food choices. The homemade sausage was a hit and the pizza special. The ambiance is low key, fresh, and relaxing. Worked well for our group. 4 entrees, 1 appetizer, and 4 drinks came to $120 before tipping.<br/><br/>We'll return for snacks; probably not my first choice for a proper meal.

Food not exciting--. I have been there at least 10 times- probably every few weeks to meet friends after work-the owner doesn't seem to notice- 'regular' customers, -- just poor business wise to ignore a regular customer-<br/>to be fair- staff is more friendly than the owner, if not always on the ball--<br/>however the fries with aioli are a misnomer-- it is kraft mayo- not aioli--<br/>carpaccio is not inspiring, fish tacos are ok ,not memorable--- menu hasn't changed in 6 months--
Laura K
Nice atmosphere good service just okay food. A limited selection on the menu and high prices considering the relatively cheaper ingridients means we probably wouldn't return. If you are looking to go for a few appetizers and a bottle of wine or some great beer you will likely enjoy this restaurant, but if you are looking for a meal there are plenty of better choices.

Glass Monkey review May 26, 2014. Excellent food and service. The waiter, Simon, was knowledgeable about their beer and wine list which is extensive. Our group was welcomed to continue visiting after we'd finished our meal, and the waiter was happy to tell us of the most popular items on the menu. The venue is attractive but informal, although it could also be used for a formal party.

The food was good. Had the mushroom. The service by a male waiter was horrendous. Won't go back. We waited 30 mins for our reservation. Never experienced that before. My water was never refilled the entire night and when we asked for our bill it took 45 mins. There are better places to go that will treat you like a human being.

Really fantastic dinner. One of the best meals I've had in a long time. We ordered 3 "snacks" two small plates, a salad, and a dessert, and everything we had was really, really good. We chose the deviled egg, smoked salmon, and ricotta as our three cold snacks, and all were delicious. Then we had the carpaccio and the fish tacos. The carpaccio is paper-thin and incredibly tender and flavourful, and the fish tacos reminded me so pleasantly of the ones I've eaten in southern California (and for small plates, both provided quite a bit of food). Our kale salad was well-dressed and came with a beautifully poached egg for richness. We finished with the bread pudding and it was ridiculous, absolutely soaked in rum in a very positive way. Delicious.<br/><br/>We had the three snacks, two small plates, salad, dessert, and a very nice French Pinot Gris for $100, which was entirely reasonable, in my opinion. Many of the dishes I saw (especially on the appetizer side) would sell for $3-4 more at many other local restaurants.<br/><br/>Our server, though stuck with a large party of older women who were keeping her very busy, was professional, efficient, and very friendly, and we thought she was great. There was also a gentleman who must be management or an owner, and he was wonderful as well, very genuine. <br/><br/>We very much enjoyed the evening and I am excited to return. It's a nice little space that I think they make good use of and I am looking forward to sitting outdoors this summer. <br/><br/>Such a great dinner!

Lovely!. My family surprised me for my birthday at Glass Monkey, and what a lovely surprise it was. We were all very pleased with our meals and experience. The small plates were....well...small, but tasty none the less. The main courses were all more than enough to fill our bellies...pizzas could feed two after an appetizer. Extensive selection of beers...they even carry Crabbies! We sampled all of the desserts, and agreed that the lemon cake and bread pudding were the winners. I can't wait to return when the weather is warmer and the patio is open. On a side note...I would love to see some local art work on the walls. This type of food/location requires a fun/funky vibe.

Enjoyed trying something new!. We loved the glass monkey! We ordered a bunch of different dishes and decided to share as there was so many things we wanted to try. We started off with the snacks and had the hummus, deviled eggs, and salmon. Each of the snacks were packed with rich and delicious flavor. Then we decided to share some small plates and salad. The fish tacos and chicken yakitori were amazing. I thought the fries were okay but nothing special incomparison to the other dishes we tried. All the food was well prepared. Our server was very friendly! I can't wait to go back.

Hit the spot!. Worked late Wednesday evening, and spent the whole time craving a burger. Wanted to try out my new local, The Glass Monkey. It was busy in there, and everyone looked like they were having fun! The burger: the sirloin is definitely ground in-house, quite thickly (resembles hand-diced), and it was really juicy. Great cheese (sylvan star gouda), and ripe tomato and a good amount of romaine. Burger bun as it should be (held together, right proportion, fresh). Not a messy burger to eat, simple overall and a high quality classic burger. Fries were good, and like many restaurants are doing now, the potatoes are brined rather than salted after frying. Quite salty but that is perfect with a beer! Wlll be back to try their small plates and very excited for the patio. One of the rare patios in Edmonton not fronting a parking lot or busy road.

One of the best places I have eaten in months. The 'snacks' are delicious, almost the best part of the meal. Service was outstanding, Simon, our waiter, was the perfect mix of attentitive and polite. Expect to pay The Keg prices, but with an exceptional thought out menu. (Menu items we tried: Smoked Salmon, Flank Steak, Deviled Eggs, Chicken Big Plate, Pork Big Plate, Lemon Cake, Jack's Bread Pudding, and two craft beers); nothing disappointed!

Came here for the burger. Very disappointed. Bland Bland Bland. The fries were good. As was the service. But my meal was, unfortunately, a disappointment.

Neighbourhood Gem. I have been to the glass monkey once since opening. I had a sampling of appetizers. The french fries were delicious and take me back to a european vacation. I also quite enjoyed the pizza which has a great dough and sauce. The service was excellent and we were even greeted by the owner. Definitely go back and glad to see somewhere to have food and drink in lendrum.

Excellent food excellent service great atmosphere great selection of beer and wine

Worth it for sure. Great new restaurant, for those who like a mix of formal and casual setting. Great beer list as well as menu is large and has great items, like the fish tacos and the yakatori as well as the snacks are great nibblers.

Was there last night. Menu is varied, tried four different dishes - all excellent! Can't wait for summer evenings on the patio.
Jackie
We were here the other night and while the menu was interesting the service was terrible. Server brought the wrong items an forgot to bring others. Food was good, but for that price I would also expect professional service

The Glass Monkey offered us a great evening of delicious food - not that I'm surprised, considering Chef Darcy Radies (of the Blue Pear) and Chef Bryan Meintzer (Jack's Grill, Blue Pear, The Marc) are behind the menu. With a great selection of dishes and a warm, inviting atmosphere, I can definitely see myself here many times in the near future.

We opted to try the baby squid poached in olive oil with black eyed peas, garlic and shaved fennel. Unfortunately the baby squid was bland, and was again served just below room temperature, making this already unlikable dish more difficult to eat.

March 31, 2014 by Phil Wilson 1 Comment  The Glass Monkey is a place I’ve been anxious to try, given some solid reviews and personal feedback I’ve received. The restaurant was fairly busy for a weeknight, which was a good sign in my books, but once we sat down I couldn’t help but observe that of the 23 diners in the restaurant, 21 of them were

Ricotta pleases with chunky apricot preserves and elfin, toasted sunflower seeds. Temperature, as with the parsnip puree, is problematic, and this unfortunate recurrence clouds the ability to perceive nuances within this delicate preparation.
