I made a reservation for May 12, for 7 lady friends and myself to celebrate 3 of our birthdays last week, and have to say what a delight our evening was! The ambiance, the service, the food was impeccable! Some of us had the brussel sprouts (omg, anyone who does not like brussel sprouts, you won't after eating these), the crab dip (was not my fave...there was an herb that I normally do not like, otherwise was delicious), and most had the scallops which I heard rave reviews from the ladies...I decided to have the fettucine with mushrooms and once again I was totally impressed! Go see for yourselves, you won't be disappointed!
Tonight was my first time at The Canteen and I have to say, Bravo. It reminded me of the simple pleasure of eating fresh cooked food that had alot of love ( an flavor) in each plate (I had a bite of everyones haha). I think I found my favorite restaurant.
This is definitely not my first experience at The Canteen and it will not be my last .
The staff was/is always fantastic and was great to work with while accommodating a group of 8.
As a lover of seafood , I try to order it wherever I go. This place is hands down the best Ive ever had. With our group 6/8 ordered seafood and would order seconds in a heart beat .
Highly recommend giving it a try if you haven’t yet !
After drooling over photos of The Canteen's offerings for months, we finally got our act together to get to The Canteen for dinner last night. Me - grilled radicchio and salad Nicoise; him - seafood chowder (he says best he's ever eaten) and salad Nicoise. Maybe we should have mixed up the mains but we couldn't resist the tuna. And it was delicious!! The flavours were amazing ! And our server Liz was a gem! Haven't had the crobster yet but looking at it when served at the neighbouring table, I was strongly tempted to nip it from the guy when he turned his head �. Next time!
Great food, great staff, reasonable prices. We were a party of 10 and although the place was packed, we quickly got our table and the service was friendly, professional and fast. Everyone in our party thoroughly enjoyed the meals. Keep up the great work. We will be back and will bring friends.Thanks!!
Delicious food and a great bistro vibe in this downtown Dartmouth restaurant. Had lunch there and dinner. Service is friendly and attentive.
One of the best meals I've had in a very long time! The Tuna Nicoise was finely constructed, with a great variety of vegetables that all fit together perfectly! The tuna itself was so good! I didn't need a dessert after that entree, but the carrot cake sounded appealing, and it was more than that, it was stupidly good, without being too sweet.
I saw pictures a friend shared and we decided to give it a try. What a great spot! Absolutely amazing staff, warm atmosphere and the food ... what can I say! Fabulous! We had mussels to start with. Crobsterroll and Tuna Noise for the main course and I couldn't resist the vanilla cheesecake. We will be back and recommend! Thank you!
Wow. Just wow. This was one of the best places we ate all summer. At first when we sat down we were a little worried, it was loud and at first glance there wasn't anything on the menu that was really popping out at us. However, our first impressions quickly changed. Our food was amazing -flavours were delicious and we had the peach tart for dessert which wasn't too sweet and had this little piece of mint on it that was a nice surprise to my taste buds-, we got used to the noise (and eventually it died down a bit), the decor was really nice, and our waitress, Liz, was awesome. Seriously, awesome. We are looking forward to our next trip back - can't wait to try what's on the new fall menu!
What a great spot! We went here for brunch today. The wait staff was friendly, the atmosphere was vibrant, and the food was absolutely fantastic!! We'll definitely be back very soon.
Very nice restaurant with beautiful design and delicious food. We had brunch here last week. The seafood chowder is a highlight, must try. Even the biscuit come with the chowder is very delicious. We ordered 3 things on lunch menu and two things from the kids menu. All good and the size is big, price is acceptable!

We came to The Canteen on Portland a couple of weeks ago. It was a busy night but, we just happened to walk in at the right time and ended up getting a table right away.
Unfortunately, they were in the middle of a menu change (season) and, the night was busier than expected so, out of the few options that we had chosen for food, they only had one available as described.
They did offer alternatives and tried to accommodate us. However, after we agreed, the waitress came back with more changes but, somehow that time things worked out slightly better in our favor and, we almost ended up getting what we wanted to begin with.
Anyways, the food turned out to be very delicious and the portions were really filling. Also, the waitress did her best to serve us well and handled pretty well the situation.
However, I did notice that other people that came after us weren’t informed that the kitchen was running out of food options. If we would have actually waited to be seated to find that out, we wouldn’t have been as happy, for sure.
That aside, I think this place is worth visiting, more so if you are already on the Dartmouth side of town.
I had the seafood chowder it was excellent. - chock-full of seafood, very rich, and a huge portion for a lunch serving- a bargain at 16$. My partner had the Ruben sandwich with a side Cesar salad, he also very much enjoyed his meal. A laid back spot, unpretentious and great food. We will return for sure.
Me and my cousin were visiting from Toronto and were so excited to try The Canteen! First of all the resturant is sooo cute, such a great atmosphere. All the servers were really kind and efficient. We started with the Sober oysters, honestly not our favourite kind, a tad too salty but still really fresh! We specifically came for the Crobster Roll and omg… it was amazing. Hands down the best lobster/crab roll I’ve ever had. Even the fries were soo good! We then tried two different desserts because we couldn’t chose. They were both amazing, I personally loved the carrot cake the most. Wish we lived closer, I would eat a Crobster Roll from here every week 😂❤️
I really outdid myself. Chowder, salad, pasta and dessert. No fails! Epic dinner. Treat yourself to original, delicious and authentic food. You wont regret it. Five Stars! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
This place is a very busy spot and it’s recommended to get a reservation. Food is top notch: so fresh and savoury you can feel the love and portions are hearty so come hungry. The Crab dip and Tuna Tataki are amazing! Scallops were slightly overdone but overall it was all very good Drinks are elegant and fun and the desserts; brûlée os probably the best I’ve ever had but the Olive Oil loaf is a must - it’s to die for I’ll be back for that Crobster Roll
We’ve been meaning to try out the Canteen for a while and finally got the opportunity to stop by for lunch. The food is impeccable and you can’t go wrong with the crab/lobster roll and some split pea and ham soup. Worth the ferry ride over from Halifax if you’re in the area. Service is also fantastic!
First visit in August 2021, we had The Hangover Breakfast Sandwich and Huevos Rancheros. Both were spectacular. Awesome brunch! Second visit in February 2022, we both had the Eggs Benny. Again, delicious. Also had a Caesar, homemade mix. Spicy! We sat at the bar and Marc served us both times. He’s great!
