Review Jo Klassen's Restaurant - Courtenay

Stopped in for lunch and so glad we did. Server was very friendly, knew from the BF being English to offer an order of Mushy Peas, which came served with mint sauce...only place he's had it served this way in all his time in Canada. Food was fresh and tasty and good size portions. We will definitely be back!

This experience was worth 5 stars. On time. Great service and the fish and chips and coleslaw were great. My only thing I didn't like was their tartar sauce. If they were closer, I'd go more often.

Taste good , I did try so many fish and chips but the most was oily, this was fantastic. Wash room clean and also has changing table, custom service was friendly. (High recommended) 👌

Considering I ordered ahead, I'm not sure why the order wasn't ready Fish, chips and coleslaw very good. Calamari not good at all. Have been back since . No problems at all.

Worst dining out experience in decades, shocking considering the number of great online reviews and this place came highly recommended by a local for fish 'n chips. 1. Fish was thin and bland, chips were soggy, not a lemon wedge in sight to add any zest. 2. Out of oysters even though it was the beginning of dinner shift. 3. Seafood chowder was salty, brown potato puree with no recognizable seafood chunks, although there were chunks of something (still not sure what). We sent back the chowder after a couple of mouthfuls; a lady we assume to be the manager came to speak to us and we were honest about the food. No apology, and we were largely ignored for the rest of the night until they came by to ask if we wanted dessert...? Of course, no. Unbelievably, they still charged for the chowder, which we objected to. Again, no apology, but the same lady did take off the chowder from the final bill, but insisted on standing over us as we sorted exact cash payment - we didn't trust a credit card payment, no tip. Bizarre and poor service, terrible food, why would you come here?

Well the first thing to hit you when you walk in, is the smell of old oil. Our waitress was lovely she was attentive and she knew her products. the fish was OK . I had the halibut which is a little expensive.chips are soggy. I would have given a better review but the smell is just too overbearing.

If you want an amazing taste in your mouth followed by a full stomach this is the place to be, I absolutely love joe Klassen’s. The servers are so amazing and sweet and the food is to die for, we had just got off the plane and discovered this place, it was a sure awesome way to start off the vacation!!

Had a GC from deployment dinner through the MFRC. We ordered 2 2 piece halibut meals and a poutine. The halibut pieces were huge and the batter is light and crunchy...im not even a big fish and chips guy, but their batter was fantastic. Poutine came with curds and piping hot homemade gravy on the side so I could add to cheese curds at home, I thought that was brilliant! The staff was friendly both on the phone when I ordered and when I picked up! Will definitely go back!

Really Fine Fish!. We have visited this restaurant nearly every time we are on Vancouver Island. Living in Whitehorse, Yukon, we eat lots of freshly caught fish. Jo Klassen's is the best fish we have found anywhere south of home!

We arrived back here last night to visit with family and friends for Christmas, and JKs will definitely be one place we stop at. :)

Ted

We went to Jo Klassen's this evening (Saturday) for a family gathering and celebration. There was 18 of us who came in at 5pm. So I am just writing about Marla and my orders but the others felt pretty much the same way. The ambience is utilitarian and not all that out of the ordinary for a strip mall location. But I would say that this is the kind of place that focuses more on the food and the service than it does on the tables and chairs.
Marla and I opted to share the Halibut and Chips order. I don't eat very much and I really didn't have the option on the menu to have just a single piece of fish so I was glad they allowed us to share. I don't eat chips or coleslaw but Marla liked hers. She especially liked the freshly cut potatoes. I did taste them and thought they could have been cooked a bit more to get them a little crispier. But frankly, they were great as presented.
I had a cup of clam chowder which was okay. It was good but I don't think I would order it again. I would definitely go back to Jo Klassen's for more outstanding fish and chips.

Great Fish & Oysters. Wonderful experience.
We had Fish & Chips and Oysters & Chips. The batter on the Fish was outstanding, light and crisp almost a Tempura. (The owner's own recipe we were told).
The breaded Oysters were flavorful and the perfect texture.
The Wait staff and Kitchen crew were all great, Brad in the kitchen made a particular impression as we were seated next to the order window and chatted with him while he cooked and we ate.
Service was fast but unhurried and the prices were amazing.
Then to top it off we walked the River Trail around the Airpark that is right across the street and the perfect after dinner walk to balance our meal.

Friday Supper Time. We have gone here almost every Fri night and enjoyed the all you can eat fish and chips. They are tasty. It can get very busy but they try very hard to look after everyone as quick as they can. The owner is often cleaning tables and chatting with customers. The cream puff dessert is DELICIOUS - something you have to share as it is such a generous portion. We have always enjoyed our outing here.

Best fish and chips. This is the best fish & chips I've ever had! Perfectly cooked, not greasy at all. Large portion sizes. Coleslaw side was also really good.

Went there for lunch and they forgot to put through my husband's order so immediately they brought out a whole plate of fish (I think it was cod), approx. 6 pieces. Then when his actual order was ready they brought that out too, and didn't charge us for the first plate.

I was not expecting much when we walked in as the atmosphere leaves a lot to be desired but the excellent food made up for it! Would definitely go back!

Greasy. This is one place that I will never step foot in again. I ordered a simple snapper fillet with no breading. When I received it, the snapper was breaded and greasy. The rice pilaf that came with it tasted like it had been sitting in the refrigerator for a few days. My coleslaw was really slimy and tasted awful. My husbands fish and chips were almost burnt. Both our meals should have never gone out. What a shame.
