Review Sun Star Restaurant - Coquitlam

Ben Delville
We get consistently delicious food and the staff are always pleasant. This place has the best takeout in town as far as I am concerned--MMM what can I say but yummm!

I went to the location that is next to the Ramada. After reading all the negative reviews, I was skeptical. I found the food to not be horrid as others have reviewed. It wasn't the best, but I've definitely had worse. I found the portion size to be somewhat lacking, but for the cheap price...can't really complain.

We have been good customers at the Austin location.
What happened with the move.?
Our dinners were very poor. The food was bland, greasy and not fresh at all.
The presentation was unacceptable with all the food crammed onto a single plate.
The restaurant is very small and dated looking with the kitchen in the center.
We will have to find another location in Coquitlam for our Chinese food

This is a chop suey place rather than a Chinese restaurant. They serve chop suey as well as Denny’s type breakfast and lunch. The lunch combo comes with either wonton soup or clam chowder. They also charge $1.5 for Chinese tea which is very rare except dim sum places. Not recommended.

Ordered takeout from the sun star restaurant for my family beef and broccoli chicken chow mein sweet and sour pork and chicken balls greasy the only thing that was good was the beef and broccoli chicken chow mein noodles almost like spaghetti noodles spent $50 for my family we all had plates that were unfinished sweet and sour pork was caked with orange sauce and gave us extra orange sauce and it was horrible ended up throwing away everything

Food is nothing special. Nothing tastes fresh. Very blend. Pork was afwul.
And then I noticed on my receipt , that they were supposed to give me 20% discount. Well on the receipt it says 20% but they actually gave only 10%?????? For how long this been happening? And how many customers they scammed like this?

Poor and unauthentic Chinese food. there are many other places that will give you REAL Chinese food. not this place. Do not recommend at all.

Worst food ever order delivery. Food was cold when arrived, vegetable over cook, sweet and sour was not fresh tasted like frozen food, egg rolls where greassy Phone them to let them know but no apology, there excuse they are busy. Disgusting food and costumer service.

When my host of today and I go out, we don’t visit the most popular or most acclaimed restaurants in the lower mainland. Instead we visit the restaurants that serve the community, has a unique origin story, or brings something new to the restaurant game. And this one had all three. Say hello to “Sun Star” in Coquitlam, the only restaurant that brings together grilled cheese and gyozas, spaghetti with meatballs and lobster chow mien, and Salisbury steak with fried rice. This was traditional Chinese food with training wheels, served in the comfort of a greasy spoon.

First visit, got interested when flyers were distributed in our neighbourhood. Good to know that they deliver. Had dinner, Hot Sour Soup, Crispy Prawns with Spicy Salt and Deep Fried Crispy Chicken ... all good, authentic Chinese dishes. Will definitely repeat! Next time, will order take out or delivery.

Just came home from having a disappointing dining experience at Sun Star Restaurant. Ordered spaghetti and meatballs which was more like spaghetti in tomato soup - nothing that resembled spaghetti sauce. Ordered Turkey dinner and there was so much fat and grisly parts that was unbeatable. When brought to the servers attention our disappointment in our meals, the manager did not come to address our concerns. When we approached the manager we were told that the chef said that there was nothing wrong with our food. Poor customer service and even poorer food quality will find us no repeat customers and do not recommend them to others.

I've only ever gone to the Sun Star for breakfast so I can't speak about the Chinese food they serve. However, the breakfasts they serve are consistently good.
The server is also very friendly and helpful. When I said I didn't want the toast that comes with my smoked sausage breakfast she offered to replace them with a few slices of tomato. A nice gesture.
The food - eggs cooked perfectly overeasy with the shredded hashbrowns. The hashbrowns were very crispy and quite enjoyable.
Bottom line, in the morning this is a reliable diner with decent coffee, friendly service and good diner-food.
I have no hesitation recommending this place and I will definitely be returning.

Thought I was going to the Austin Diner (which was a GREAT place!) & discovered that they had been bought out. The prices were considerably higher than the Austin, but I was hungry so I decided to try them. I ordered a combo plate (which at the Austin was almost too much for 2 people) & asked that it be split into 2 takeout containers so we could eat on our way. I was informed that it would be .50 for the extra takeout container! I said "Really, are you kidding me?! He said no, that's what they cost! I said "whatever, go ahead then". Then I was told that they would charge .50 for splitting it! I left. It was just too ridiculous. I should have tweaked to the fact that there was only 1 couple eating there at dinner time on a Sunday! I definitely won't be returning!

Absolutely disgraceful to Chinese restaurant. We bought a coupon from VanToSave for 8 people for 59.99. First of all they missed a dish, and blamed us for not reminding them, second, they openly said they'll never do this promotion again that it won't make any money, lastly, when the missing dish did came more than half was all garnish. Food is very so-so, you can pick any szechuan place in Richmond and it will be better than this. NOT RECOMMEND.

Great little place for an inexpensive breakfast. No frills here, but if you are in the mood for a traditional eggs, bacon, hashbrowns and pancakes breakfast at a great price, this is the place to go!

Best local szechuan chinese food. I've been ordering from Sun Star and (originally Sun Gong before the new name) for years now, in the past always take out. Good food, very flavourful, good portions, reasonable prices.

Since moving to the new austin heights location, they now have nice big restaurant and so the best way to enjoy it is to eat out. Portions are huge! Way more than take-out, and the food is cooked to perfection. My favourites are the beef with black bean sauce chow mein, pork chops with spicy salt, ginger beef. But my all time favourite dish of any restaurant is the tender beef with black pepper, it comes sizzling and cooked to perfection, beef and vegetables super tender and flavourful!

Worst service and good safe? I don't think so. They took forever to just take our drink order, at least 15min after we sat down and there were only two other tables in the restaurant. Then it took another 10 minutes before we got our drinks. Our food came and it was only just warm. However, the worst part was when we asked to take our food home and the waitress placed the plates pretty much on top of each other to take to the kitchen. That's right, the bottom of one plate was in the food that we wanted to take come with us. NOT FOOD SAFE AT ALL. I was disgusted.

Never deliver. I've ordered twice from this place for delivery. After waiting 2 hours BOTH times, I called to find out what the heck was going on. First excuse was 'our driver delivered to the wrong house'... Really??? Second time 'oh it was too busy so we cancelled your order'. That's some great service you have going on. This place is a joke and I will never give them another chance. Thank you for making my husband and children starve because you're too good to deliver to us.

Not up to par for thr Sun Star. Our family has ordered take out food rom Sun Star (Austin Heights Diner) for many years. Today we ordered the dinner for 8(B) but were very unhappy with the quality of the food! The egg rolls were not eaten and the fortune cookies were soggy. The chcken dishes had an excess of batter(breading) and were not completely cooked. Also the deep fried prawns were over breaded (battered). Our family usually enjoy the gigner beef but they did not like the taste and there was a lot left over which was tossed out.Should we try again or not bother to spend our + $80.00.?

Things change. This place was once themaustin heights dinner. It was once a great cheap place. It went down hill really down hill I stopped going. I saw it changed hands, gave it another go. The magic had come back. It became a go to place again. Lately tho it's become a gong show again. I mean I'm not sure how it can fluctuate so much. With so many places like this vanishing from the lower mainland it's sad to see this one in the decline again. It's your typical diner fare and western style Chinese food. The thing is tho when you toss in extremely poor service and a bad attitude to boot its not going to fly for long. I mean when you fail to address your customer in a polite and professional manner somehow believing it doesn't matter your headed for disaster. Toss in declining quality of food quality and any echoes of the old Ausint heights dinner are just ghosts of a time gone by.

Here's a few issues with the food. Deep fried items not fried properly. Oil too cold absorbing into food,
Eggs not cooked properly can't cook a egg to order ? I mean they should be cooked at least.

I really wanted this place to shine again but I think it may be too late

Not good!. Best Coquitlam Chinese food restaurant is Woking Dragon. We have tried other restaurants but nothing compares to the quality, freshness and friendly service at Woking Dragon. Recently, thought we would try Sun Star Chinese Restaurant on Austin Ave, it is simply incomparable to Woking Dragon. I am writing this review because the whole experience was very disappointing and I thought I might save someone else from wasting their time and money.

Rude service and overcooked food. Food is not good quality. It was extremely bland and overcooked. Took order back and they said there is nothing they could do because they thought the food was fine. The cook came to the front and was offended I was returning the food. I understand that if one dish wasn't great

Good Food,Good Value & Friendly Staff!!. We have been going to this location here for some years now and it has much improved with the new owners. The place is much cleaner now and the staff are all very friendly. The food is fresh and tasty, the portions are huge and the service is quick. The lunch specials are also well worth your money. It have now become our weekly place to eat (even with a husband that's a picky eater when it comes to restaurants).

Disappointed. I have always liked this restaurant and have patronized them at their old location. The last time I ordered the food was great, tonight the food was cold and they phoned an hour later to see if we got our food. They seem unorganized and not able to provide their former glory.Smarten up or I will find somewhere else.

HORRIBLE!. If you are looking for a meal that just came out of the microwave, this is the place. We were promised our delivery order in 45 minutes, it finally arrived 1 hr 15 min later. We ordered chicken chow mein (which was sooo dry I am sure it was microwaved), beef fried rice (ok, but nothing spectacular), sweet and sour chicken balls (which had hardly any chicken) and honey garlic chicken (which was so dry it was barely edible). Overall, not a good experience and definitely will never order from here again.

Reccomended. This time not as good though. Lots of food for money. Ordered at 6:24 sunday, delivery 50 minutes later, 10 minutes later than promised but we live a ways away and they said they were very busy. Food was not hot; think it sat for a bit. sweet sour pork, fried rice, chow mein and veggies wwere good; beef broccoli too salty. Only 3 fortune cookies for dinner for 6, but received 12 spring rolls instead of 6. No chop sticks but didn't ask. The food comes in handy reusable plastic containers rather than syrofoam. Thumbs up to that. Good for left overs. Dec 22 2013

NOT IMPRESSED Portions smal.... NOT IMPRESSED
Portions small and tasteless. This is NOT the Austin Diner!

Have been here a couple of times with co-workere qsince the renos were completed. Clubhouse and fries went up slightly in price ($0.50 maybe) but are just as good as they used to be. Sue is totally awesome. We'll definitely keep coming back.

Not as good as it used to be.. We ordered Sunday dinner for our family. Portions smaller than they used to be, and quite tasteless. Also, we're certain they use MSG. We will not be ordering here again. The old Austin Diner was MUCH better.

Tonight we ordered Egg Rolls, Ginger Beef, Beef Chop Suey & Shrimp Fried Rice. Everything was really good and the Best Ginger Beef we've ever had. Very clean restaurant, courteous staff and fast service. I will definitely be going back again.

**
I got take out a second time, when I ate for dinner it was good, but my left overs were not as good, the left overs actually gave me a stomach ache. My left over Egg Roll was not edible the next day as well.

It is on the pricey side in my opinion.. $37 for Ginger Beef, Beef Chop Suey, Chicken Chow Mein and 4 Egg Rolls.

I will try it again before making a final decision

This used to be Austin diner. Awesome lunches. Now since its changed to this new name and owner everything is different the old lunch specials are gone and replaced with less at higher cost. Sue is still there but I think she should move on. I've been back twice and I have moved on after many years.

Ate a lunch here this week and I agree wholeheartedly with the
previous reviewer. The food is, in a word, inedible. The chicken chow main noodles were bland and tiny pieces of chicken were hard to find. The sweet and sour was hard and the sauce simply goopy. The beef chop suey had no flavour at all. There was no Chinese food flavour in the meal whatsoever. No tea was served, no chopsticks were offered just a knife and fork!
We will not be going back to Sun Star. A huge disappointment.

Food isn't good. This place was great when it was on Clarke Road. Since being on Austin; the food is horrible. They must have changed the cooks when they moved. Definatly of a whole different quality of food.

I ordered a small dinner for one. It came with fried rice that was very bland. The sweet and sour pork was over cooked and I wasn't even sure if it was pork or chicken. The noodles were also bland.

The deep fried wontons that I also ordered weren't anything special.

I will not be going back here again.

Good Food, Fresh, Big portions. Decided to try this place out, because it was getting late (close to 10pm), and all the other local Chinese restaurants were closed or closing. This place is open till 10:30pm or 11:00pm.

Can't go wrong here. Not the place to eat in, as it's small and only has a few tables. Great for take-out and delivery. Service is fairly decent and friendly, for what it is. Prices are a little lower than everywhere else, and the portions are big. Food is fresh and full of flavor. Very good Chinese food in the Tri-Cities. Strongly recommended. You can even order online.

Good enough for cantonese cooking Szechwan food.
