Review Nagano Japanese Restaurant - Coquitlam

What an amazing spot! Great date ambience with traditional look of a Japanese bistro and they even have nice private rooms as well. Food was spectacular and staff were very friendly. We ordered lots and everything was good but these were the amazing standouts you have to try! BBQ Black Cod, Hamachi Kamma (it's a flambe dish they make at your table and may have been my favorite of the night), soft shell crab, and Toro Sashimi. Everything else was good as well but those are the must try. We were lucky as well to meet the owner/head chef as he served the Hamachi Kamma to us. Very courteous and humorous guy. Being a huge fan of Japanese food, I've eaten my fair share in life and even though there are places that make 1 or 2 standout dishes, this place had quite a few which is why I had to leave this review. For time I'd recommend going around 6 - 7 as the place started to get really busy around 730 (on a Tuesday night even). I'm guessing because it's an open late place. But if you like a more bustling ambience then come after 730. Anyways, this place was a great treat and surprise today for us for Chinese New Year. Try what I recommended and thank me later! ;)

The most amazing sushi place in Metro Vancouver! This is a great place to go with family, friends and co-workers . The owner, manager and servers are friendly and take care of their customers very well. (All servers are amazing at the same time you know who you are when I say thank you for making every visit perfect) The food is great and delicious and good price. When I think about sushi it doesn’t matter where in Metro Vancouver I am I travel the distance to come to this place. A place like home and lovely experience every single time. You have to try this place. A++++

Amazing! My new favourite sushi place. Fresh wasabi, incredible concoctions, clean, fresh, top notch service. I've been meaning to post a review since we dined in last Saturday. I had to because it was so good. Having grown up in the lower mainland, I've eaten more than my share of sushi. This place is the best yet.

I went with some friends of mine to have dinner here today and had a wonderful time. I can't speak for the food the others had, but I had the deluxe roll combo and it was delicious. It was very filling and a good portion size for the price. We also each received a complementary roll (though I don't remember the name) and that was also quite tasty. As for the service, we were put into this room-like booth that was pleasant both for distancing from other customers and making our conversation over dinner more enjoyable. Our main server was Sugi (I hope I spelled that correctly) and she was lovely. All other servers who we interacted with were also very friendly and helpful. Overall a great experience and I will definitely be coming back.

The Coolest sushi 🍣 restaurant ever!!! I am a huge sushi fan - and I Am extremely picky about sushi restaurants — this said Nagano was one of the TOP sushi spots I have ever been to 🙈 super fresh, extremely fun and very trendy with an amazing Japanese fusion ❤️ thank you Mr.Pae for such an incredible experience 🥰🙏 I would just let Mr.Pae decide what’s on your menu😜

I love this place for eating sushi.
Poor service, worm found in raw sashimi. Owner did nothing except took it away. Expected us to eat the other tuna products. We did not eat anything but had to pay almost $85. Hired server also had bad attitude. Uploaded video, but probably won't play. Check facebook review for full video.

service was very poor.. the first lady who served us was rude and didn't give us what we wanted. Too expensive for the service and the quality of the food. The oysters were outrageously expensive and a fraction of the size of the average we have had... they told us those were "premium and not local"... the sashimi was not even fresh!!!

Very disappointing...

Sub par service.....lady at the front said the wait will be a few minutes so we waited. More people come in and they have NO system of tracking who came first. Went up to the lady and asked whether she wants to take our name to keep track. She answered no. Later a new group was seated before us. The lady is no longer at the front desk and had to ask another person for a table. She said it will be 20 minutes. We left. When you can't even seat people properly how can you run a good restaurant?

There was a point where this was my favorite sushi establishment many years ago but nowadays it seems like they've lost their passion. Their sushi rolls are built terribly, falling apart the moment your chopsticks hit them. I don't know why the place is still busy. I keep going back now and then to see if they have regained their mojo but they haven't. With that said our service was very good and the Moody Fever roll is probably one of my favorite rolls of all time despite it being made poorly, it still had that flavor.

7:15 PM on a Tuesday, I arrive and wait at the counter. No less than three waitresses acknowledge my presence, but do nothing else. After ten full minutes, one approaches the desk, asks how many of me there are, then answers the phone. When that call is over, she answers another one on another line. With hand gestures she tells another server to seat me but nothing happens. A third call comes in and after fifteen full minutes I give up.

My husband and I were craving for sushi one night, and all our other local go-to sushi joints were already closed. I have been to the Nagano in Port Moody and it was pretty good, but I remembered it was kind of expensive. We had never been to this location and thought we would give it a try. We ordered a few safe staples like California roll, cucumber roll, house roll and a couple of cooked items like a chicken udon and croquette. When I picked up a piece of California roll, the entire piece fell apart before it reached my plate. We later realized that the sushi was so wet from the vinegar that the rice wouldn't hold together. That was highly disappointing for a restaurant that charged a premium for that simple roll. The udon was also very bland. Overall, we felt this restaurant charges too much for less than mediocre quality of food. There are far better Japanese restaurants in the area for less.

Today was my first time eating here. I was thoroughly impressed! The décor is so authentic Japanese and sets the mood for the dining experience. The service was friendly and consistent during my visit. My water was never empty and I didn't wait long for anything. I tried the chicken teriyaki bento box and it was magnificent! The salad was incredible, the tempura was perfectly battered, the Miso soup was divine, and the chicken was scrumdiddlyumptious!!!! Also included was a piece of super yummy deep fried tofu and two deep fried salmon balls. Excellent value considering the entire meal was only 11.99! The food was so delicious, that I will definitely be back! Next time I'm going to try the sushi!

Always good food, service is always excellent. If you want good quality sushi and best all around... This is the place. Love the hot sauce used on spicy salmon sashimi

Came back to try Nagano after they were burnt down. Nagano is a higher-end sushi place in Coquitlam. However, service was mediocre. The server forgot things on several occasions. I expected more from the higher price range.

I've never paid so much for a avocado and dynamite roll, I've also never waited so long for just to rolls (at 25 minutes) and this was a simple take out order. Rip-off!

I was down near Coquitlam Center and I had some time to kill, and of course I was hungry so I went into Nagano sushi for a pre-dinner snack.
It seemed to me that the combos and many of the menu items were just a bit more expensive than other sushi restaurants that I visit in the area.
So not being too hungry, I decided to just order a couple rolls and an appetizer. The appetizer was the agedashi tofu. It was an excellent choice. The tofu squares were large enough and also crispy on the outside.
I also ordered a spicy tuna roll and a BC roll. Both of those rolls were top-quality. The spicy tuna roll had a generous amount of spicy tuna inside it as well as very fresh and crispy green lettuce. It's a funny thing to notice about sushi, however, the rice that is used can make a world of difference.
Inexpensive sushi often uses rice that just doesn't taste the same as good-quality rice. I'm not sure how that is or why that is but it is something that I do notice. Nagano sushi uses what I think is good quality rice.
The second roll I ordered was the BC Roll. It was good. Funny thing is I'm not a real big fan of the BC Roll so I'm not sure why I ordered it. However it was good.
Overall, Nagano sushi is a little bit more expensive than the other places I go to around Coquitlam but the quality was noticeably better. This isn't to say that the other places are low quality, it's just that Nagano is somehow a step above.
I give Nagano sushi two thumbs up and highly recommend it. But be aware that it does cost a little more than the other places that you will go to around Coquitlam.

It was a beautiful evening, so I decided to go for a stroll with OldBean. Upon nearing the end of our trip, I got hungry, and decided to give Nagano a second chance (also because it was the only sushi open nearby). The first time I came here (when they first opened), the sushi was falling on the side and there were a lot of bones in my sashimi.Restaurant: Nagano (visit their website here)

Ate here yesterday: Pros: .... Ate here yesterday:
Pros:
- it wasn't busy so the service was fairly quick
- open all day (don't close for lunch)

Cons:
- expensive
- selection is not great
- server was rude
- music was extremely loud and annoying
And after all that the food was not good. I'm from Maple Ridge and we have a couple of the best sushi places I've ever had (not being bias at all!)
Check out Iori sushi - the best fresh seafood and most delicious sushi ever
Or Shinobi sushi - service isn't great but the food is very good
-

Always a pleaser!. I have been going to this restaurant for years and have never once been disappointed. The service is fast and the staff are very accommodating and welcoming. They also have great hours - open till 1am most days! Being a vegan, my favorite rolls would have to be the yam roll with no mayo, vegetarian roll, and avo ginger roll all on brown rice. I always appreciate the many options and specialties they offer at Nagano. As well, the presentation of the food is very appealing.
I highly recommend this restaurant and will continue to patron them for as long as possible!

Nagano. Liked:
-five star service from the sushi chef who somehow remembers the name of every single person that walks through the door. he kept the atmosphere at the sushi bar buzzing the whole time we were there. i have to say, this is what really sets this place apart from their stiff and plentiful competition
-all the pictures on the walls and ceiling of guests past and present, caricatures and postcards
-overall, delicious food. stand outs being the torched toro sushi, grilled saba (although it took over half an hour), and the moody fever roll
disliked:
-it is on the pricier side

We went to Nagano a few days ago at night and I would have to say it was my worse sushi experience ever. The server was incredibly rude, obvious she didn't want to be there. The rolls were terrible. I paid $11 for a specialty roll and let me say it looked and tasted terrible. It looked like a roll that costed a dollar or two, not a specialty roll(it was the spider roll). Service was also incredibly slow. We had to go up and ask what was taking so long. It was late night and it wasn't even busy. I would highly recommend to go to another sushi place cause I can guarantee you that you'll have a better experience elsewhere and it won't hurt your wallet. Seriously, over priced garbage at Nagano. Never going back again.

Sushi is good here but I would say it's overpriced. The late night opening until 1am Wednesday to Saturday is what keeps me coming back when I need a late night fix and everyone else is closed at 9 or 10pm for sushi in town.

8 years ago, this was my fave sushi place in coquitlam. But i noticed things have changed when I walk in and heard the staff speaking Chinese. The sushi was overpriced and gross. The sashimi was soft and mushy and the ebi was a disoloured brown. We complained to the hostess lady but she didn't care. That was our last time going there.

Dirty and over priced. Don.... Dirty and over priced.
Don't order anything from kitchen. Don't be surprised if u see hair on your kitchen cooked food.
Portion is tiny and expensive. This is not high end Japanese restaurant and they charge a lot for small portion.

In my opinion, Togo sushi at the coquitlam center is way better quality at lower price.

The sushi here is over priced! And the chefs are inconsistent. One day the fish is cut bite size (as it should be) the next day you get a piece of sushi cut into 4oz. Pieces..... Gross. They have some good rolls, and I like how they are open late.

Today I went to Nagano the Japanese restaurant. It's a nice place in a nice neighborhood. Unfortunately, it does not seem to be Japanese. The staff doesn't seem to know basic Japanese food; I ordered a wakame salad and they brought me something else. They were very rude about it, so it made me feel very unwelcome. The people around seem to know the place, but they don't seem to know a lot about sushi. I ordered a dragon roll - for fourteen dollars - and got cheaped out. There was almost no eel and the sauce was just watered down soy sauce. The California roll was simply full of crab meat - you'd have to look for the cucumber and avocado with a magnifying glass. Overall, a cheap imitation of Japanese cuisine. Would you pay $2.50 for a cup of green tea?

Great Sushi and amazing staff...Some of the best rolls I have tried...Love the Moody Fever roll and Deluxe Tempura.

This is a really good Japanese restaurant. Very inviting staff, great service, and the freshest sushi I have been able to find. It is a tad expensive, but the quality is there. Try the Moody Fever Roll, it's amazing. I drive out from Vancouver to eat sushi here. Definatley worth the drive.

It is a good restaurant, the service is great, the sushi is too :) However it's just a bit more pricey than other Coquitlam sushi restaurants, but it's worth it

Good sushi, generous size. Partner had chicken teriyaki which was also good. Overall 8 out of 10. Would go again.

Went a couple of times to Nagano through the years. Good sushi but nothing out of the ordinary for an area with plenty of competition.

Best japanese restaurant in the Tri cities. Always off the hook. Best service.

Nagano Sushi first began in Newport Village in Port Moody over ten years ago. I still remember when I first started going when I was in high school. With so many sushi restaurants opening and closing, there are maybe a few I would consider best Japanese restaurant in Coquitlam / Tri-Cities area. Shyun Sushi ( click ) , Osamu, and Nagago would be your best choice IMO. Nagano soon expanded its operations to Glen Drive by Coquitlam Center. It is a sign that this place retains loyal customers and attracts new ones with its quality ingredients and friendly services. The Coquitlam Center location is trendier , while the Newport one is more traditional . Both are good and depends which location you are closer to. Nagano Coquitlam, has private party rooms along the back, section tables and a sushi bar with high chairs in the front. Polaroids of restaurant parties, guests, and staff makes the sushi bar rooftop more personable and character. Sometimes if you are lucky, the owner
