Right off Barnet Highway is an (almost) brand new (not even 2 months at this point) Indian restaurant, serving authentic Indian foods.
My friend and I stepped in for lunch a few days ago. Unfortunately no one else was in the restaurant at that time, perhaps we had just passed the lunch time rush? In anycase, we were not deterred by their lack of clientele.
Our server was one half of two brothers that own the restaurant. The other is the head chef. He was very pleasant, and had quite a few recommendations on what to try.
Dish 1. Tandoori Chicken (4pc @ 9.99)
While a little bit on the pricey side for this appetizer, it was surprising to have tandoori chicken that didn't taste like it had been precooked and left under waiting to be taken out to a customer. The chicken came out an a sizzling! hot plate, with a side (sour) sauce, and on a bed of vegetables and a wedge of lemon. It was extremely well cooked, tender and flavourful. Personally, I do like a bit of a yogurty sauce with my Tandoori, but the sauce did work well here.
Dish 2. Chicken Korma (11.99)
Flavorful, moist, chicken breast in a healthy amount of creamy sauce. While I wouldn't say this dish was the star of the show, it definitely held it's own against the butter chicken. It did have a little bit of a spicy kick to it, but not overly so.
Dish 3. Butter Chicken (11.99)
This dish pretty much blew my friend and I away. I love butter chicken, and I've had a lot of butter chicken- it is the standard when I go to an Indian restaurant. This one rates way up there, might be pushing #1 on my list, as the sauce was very (correction, extremely) flavorful, and the chicken was oh so tender- very easily shredded with a fork.(I say this, as I've been to several places where I feel like the chicken was from either yesterday, or shoved in a pot or bucket for a long time - hard) The cream and tomato shine through the sauce. Suffice to say, this dish did not last long on the table. I highly recommend this dish with both thumbs up.
The Naans
1. Garlic Naan (2.99)
Ever had naan that was clearly made yesterday, or has been sitting around, or maybe you've questioned a flat piece of bread that appears to be naan? That's not this naan. This naan has fresh garlic grated on the top, and a healthy dose of oil, but not overly so. Just a little bit of crunch off to the side, without making it like a piece of toast, but not rubber either. This naan is a must try here.
2. Paneer Naan (2.99)
While recently traveling, I found out that Naan can also be made with cheese inside. Who knew, right? In anycase, I found this and >had< to order it. A healthy dose of oil, a decent amount of cheese, and some fresh spice on top make it a good choice for naan. However, it could be better. While I'm not an expert in Indian cuisine by any means, I feel this naan could be so much more. It's lacking something. Maybe combining the garlic naan and the cheese naan together would turn up something even more fantastic? Just my two cents on the matter.
Dessert
Gulab Jamun (2.99)
[Pastry balls deep fried in a sugary syrup]
For those of you that know me, you know I absolutely am in love with Kheer and Gulab Jamun. Think of a Tim Horton's donut hole, now think of that donut hole fried and dipped into syrup. That's what this (almost) is. Once again, I am not an expert in Indian cuisine, but there have been several times where I can tell the Gulb Jamun is not fresh- this is if the ball itself is hard, or super squishy because its been dipped in syrup for so long that it might as well be pudding. This was none of that. A perfect amount of syrup, and a great fried ball, slightly (i say very slightly) crusted outside, and a perfect fresh cake-like inside. Not overly sweet like some Galub Jamun either. The owner told me that it is made fresh in house, and i'm inclined to believe him. This is one of the best Galub Jamun desserts I've had, and I wish I had more than one.
Other stuff
The decor in this restaurant is very indian themed, but not overly done to take away from the restaurant. The music was (at least to me) a more modern Indian style of music, and was not overly loud. There is an outside seating area and yes, they do have drink specials and have a liquor license. There is ample parking in the parking lot (which is located right next to crossroads hospice thrift store by the way)
Pricing
While a little bit on the expensive side, ($60+ with drinks for lunch) you certainly get what you pay for in terms of taste and quality.
Final Thoughts
While I have been to a couple other Indian places in Poco, with quite decent results, I was hoping for something a little out of the ordinary, hopefully a 'hidden' gem.
With food such as this, and aspiring owners that seem to actually care and have a commitment to the quality of food they serve, this won't be a 'hidden' place for long. I can say this because the owner said to me, 'If grinding our own spices takes an extra five minutes, we'll take that extra five minutes if it means better tasting food.' That says a lot in itself. I implore anyone looking for a good bite of Indian food to stop by here and give it a shot. The results may surprise you.
