The ice cream here is always so delicious, we always buy their ice cream tubs from the grocery store! They have a ton of flavours to choose from (which makes it hard sometimes) and there’s always new flavours coming in! I have been here a few times and the staff has consistently been very nice, friendly and do everything to make your experience a great one, even if there is a huge line out the door. The exceptional customer service is appreciated and always makes me want to go back!
It's great for a treat. We usually buy the tubs to skip the huge line up and take it home with us. 😊 end up saving a lot of money this way as a tub is $10~
Apparently hopping in the car, running over small furry animals and driving out to Cochrane on a hot summer day is a decidedly Calgary thing to do -- hell, I'm from Edmonton. And yes, you can get Mackay's in the 'Chuk but it seems more authentic to hit the dusty trail. And double yes, it IS the real deal, obviously made from local cows. Don't ask me why, but you can definitely taste it over store bought. I like Tiger, Tiger -- orange and black liquorice -- the kid likes strawberry. All good, and worth the drive.
Overpriced?...maybe. Delicious?...YES! I think money is well spent at a place that makes their own product such as McKay's. The flavour list will have something for every taste and the service is always good. The major wrench in the operation is the fact that it gets stupid busy...especially on weekends.
A personal recommendation is the Kulfi...I can't get enough!
Great place!
It was crazy busy, but understandably so! The ice cream was excellent, I had a scoop of strawberry and it was so creamy and had really yummy natural flavour.
I can't wait to come back again.
Been going to Mackays since I was small boy, its remained pretty much the same and has a lot of history, considering the crazy long line ups, you still move through pretty fast, their service is usually good and ice cream is.........ice cream, cant go wrong, the ambience of the place is cool, I make it out there 5-6 times a year and see no reason to stop.
Most favourite icecream stop in Cochrane, lots of flavours to choose from. Staff are friendly. Very fresh waffle cones! Always packed in the summer
Never had ice cream as good as McKay's. Definitely worth a drive all the way from Calgary to Cochrane. Expect a long line but it goes by fast. Great service. Great selections.
They have a wide array of flavours that ensure those who visit Mackay's will leave with ice cream they'll love. Their ice cream is worth the 45 minute drive.
I have been here a couple times and I love their ice cream!! I can assure you that you will love their flavours! I love their chocolate, coffee and coconut flavours!! Recently I tried their mango sorbet and I love it!! Must go to MacKay's if you are passing by Cochrane!!
Been here couple of times. One time we drove to cochrane from calgary just to come here. So many flavors to choose from. I prefer less choices. The icecream is great. The people who work there are really nice even though it was packed.
Yummy. Always stop here after long drives for the best ice cream ever! So many yummy flavours to choose from, you have to go there, the service is great as well.
There's a reason they're so popular.. It's a great little icecream place, not cheap, but it's worth it. Lots of selection, good staff.
The ice cream is very good. Over priced, but good with a large variety of unique flavors. I wish the customer service was friendlier.
Great! I have never had a bad experience here. The ice cream always tastes good. I've never had a bad ice cream from Makays. I would definitely recommend. BEST ICE CREAM IN ALBERTA!
I've stopped at this place many times. It's a great spot to sit outside and eat an ice cream. Their ice cream is more like Haagen Daas than Ben and Jerry's, meaning its just ice cream without all of the cookie dough, peanut butter cups, graham crackers, or whatever. If you like the chunkier ice cream, you might be better served somewhere else. I usually get the chocolate milkshake which is awesome.

I went here one summer after camping and I am a mild lactose intolerant person however I would take all the Lactate pills in the world to eat here! There is soooo much selection and all awesome choices! Its really hard just to pick three (if your getting a 3 scoop that is). Often there are lines going down the block for this place but so worth the wait =D
Yummy. Im a sucker for a good Ice cream and this place is the best!!!
Always Busy. I been here so many times in the past 10 years and you guys are aways busy. keep up with the good work. You got the best jackfruit ice cream ever!!!
Doing time in McKay's line is well worth the wait!!! As a resident of Cochrane I don't go often but love it every time I do!! The fresh banana is simply the best!!!
IIIIIce Cream. Good Ice Cream -a bit pricy but ABSOLUTELY Horrid bathrooms -made me want to throw up my IC
Creamy deliciousnes!. MacKay's is our favourite place in Alberta to get homemade ice cream (our favourite place of all time is located in BC). They have a wonderful selection of flavours and the ice cream is so amazingly creamy due to their use of cream that has 16%-18% butterfat instead of the more common 10%-12% butterfat content cream. My top 3 flavours are: cotton candy, raspberry cheesecake and maple walnut. It is definitely worth it to stop by for a scoop or three if you are nearby!
Yum. Love the licorice flavoured ice cream.
Lots of great choices and unique tastes, Nanimo flavor rocks. I do agree prices are a bit high but the town of Cochrane makes up for it.
YUM!. The flavours are unique! I had pistachio and almond ice cream (never heard of that any where else) and it was delicious!!! Every time I go to Calgary, I take a detour to Cochrane for the ice cream.
Great place, menu changes frequently. I recommend the grape, root beer or cream soda flavours.
Flavor Flavor!. As a kid growing up near Cochrane, I was always fascinated by the constant crowd around MacKay's and the hub-bub surrounding it.
While the ice cream itself is really nothing terribly special, the fantastic flavors available were...some were exotic and others just weird or kooky...but always something to please everyone.
We took a Cookies & Cream Ice cream cake home for an upcoming birthday and weren't disappointed. It was actually quite good.
Be prepared for a long line up on weekends, especially sunny, hot weekends. It's all part of the experience.
Now in Calgary. Red Mile Creamery & Desserts they carry MacKays ice cream now!
The best icecream in the whole world.hands down.
A Good Ice Cream Destination. My wife and I regularly visit MacKay's during the summer because it provides one thing: A great destination with a pleasant reward at the end of the journey. A quick hop from Calgary, the drive to this Cochrane ice cream shop on a warm summer day is just too relaxing for words. There's just something fulfilling about driving on the highway on a bright, warm day to stop for a cool treat at MacKay's.
It's a great detour for returning from a Banff day trip, but it's also enough to go out of your way for their broad assortment of flavours which is hard to find a comparable variety in Calgary.
This little ice cream store is always packed with customers, even in the winter – which really shows how amazing they truly are! There is a huge selection of flavours and you basically walk up to the counter and tell them what you want.

I have always loved to read, and tend to devour books so quickly, that I struggle to justify the cost of buying them. When I was a little girl, I remember reading books that were based in Northern USA / Canada… lots of talk of snow and toboggans, snowmen and hearty winter food… places I could only ever dream of visiting. Two particular books really stirred my imagination. One in particular where the lead character bought a hot chocolate that was “ so thick and rich, that the spoon stood up all by itself” . I was mesmerized! I had no idea what hot chocolate was. I imagined someone melting huge vats of chocolate bars and selling them as a drink… so thick that you needed a spoon to eat it! The second book was a family who lived quite literally in the middle of nowhere, and in winter the mother would make them “snow ice cream” – by collecting fresh powder snow, and adding cream and vanilla essence… I thought this was AMAZING ! So I tried to make it myself... Obviously in baking hot, outba
