Review Oliver's Tea Room In Dickens Sweets & British Museum - Chilliwack

This place used to be amazing but since covid and the closure of their original tea room it has gone downhill. Went there for st Patrick's day and had their grand guinness lunch. Awful! Would not recommend. It tastes old and stale and from a can. There were kids at the table behind screaming and crying, the atmosphere was like you were in a closet. Wish I went somewhere else.

Has undergone some major changes during Covid. Tea room has moved. Seems smaller. Generous offering of sandwiches and pastries but some of the fillings were thin. Flavourful. Friendly staff. The museum is now closed but they have an eclectic collection of tea cups and pots. There is now a new room for tea sales. Clean. Continue to support Covid safety protocols with hand sanitizer available. Tables well spaced.

Fantastic high tea for a great price. Lots of great tea selections to buy! Friendly service!

I love shopping at dickens! It’s always a treat to get to pick up some cool baking supplies, a fun gift for a friend, a bag of sweets for my own sweet tooth, a ginger beer and a teapot all in one run! ❤️ haven’t been able to try the high tea yet, hopefully soon. I just wish they were open later they always close at 4 so I don’t get in much due to work.

I love this place its amazing when I lived in chilliwack I loved coming here and when I visit I try to come here when I can ♡ it's really great atmosphere, the food and goods are very reasonably priced and the staff are friendly and knowledgeable I always learn something new about England when I there and I always have a lot of fun, try the high tea for sure as most high teas in vancouver and stuff are like 30- 40 $ per person so for 13-15$ person it's a steal and leaves you with money to buy pastries teas and uk sweets afterwards ♡ they also always have special high teas and meals each month so theres always something new to eat there ♡

Selection was not as big as I was hoping for, but did manage to find a couple of ball caps. Didn’t get an overly friendly vibe from the staff, not sure if I’d return or encourage others to shop there, unfortunate as I would have liked to.

There. Is. So. Much. To. See. AND there's lovely dine in food service available if you fancy some high tea or classic British far. A must visit for any tourist or for those just feeling nostalgic for all things British. You definitely won't be disappointed.

I was so pleasantly surprised by this place! There's tons of baking and decorating supplies and all sorts of imported food. The museum had so much to look at and my toddler enjoyed looking through the books. Unfortunately the tea room was closed but we will be back!

We enjoyed it. My bf is from the UK and liked his ploughman's lunch. My steak and Guinness pie was good. Could of used more flavoring but over all it was ok. My only issue was the servers didn't know much about what they were serving. They couldn't remember the soup of the day, what kind of cheese was served with the ploughmans lunch and if onions (my mom is allergic) were in the quiche.

A most thoroughly enjoyable visit. We will return. The Eccles cakes are the best in BC. We entered the tea room through the British store and a welcome hello and smile started our visit off well. They had what seemed to be a party on a day trip from the States eating and the rest of the tea room was pretty full too. This was midweek so we were surprised at how busy it was. We decided on a soup and sandwich and we chose well. They were both absolutely delicious and presented very well. The waitress was clean in appearance and very well mannered and chatty. We thought we would have to wait a while with it being busy but we only waited 5 minutes. We were informed by the table across from us to try the Eccles cakes. We decided to buy a couple at the bakery to take home. We like Eccles cakes but my goodness, my husband and I thought they were the very best we'd tasted in Canada. They are very authentic to the UK. The staff were very personable and nothing was too much for them. We will return for the high tea which was also recommended. We can't wait to buy more Eccles cakes. I love how clean the place was and they were pleased to inform me they had a 14 year clean record with the health inspections. Now that's impressive.

Amazing food, atmosphere and staff!. This British shop and tearoom is the best in the Valley. The staff are so polite and lovely to talk with. We had the steak & guinness pie with mushy peas and the taste of Britain and would recommend it if you are missing the tastes of home. The prices are very reasonable and the service was excellent.
After lunch we walked down memory lane through the museum and then bought some British bacon and baked beans to take home. Loved it!

Delicious and Delightfully Kitschy. My partner and I love this place. Every once in a while we like to go for the High Tea and to browse the British sweet shop.

The Service:

The waitresses are always friendly, pleasant, and attentive without hovering. But be forewarned: the atmosphere IS very casual, so one must occasionally wait to be noticed and seated, and if having your waitress spending time chatting with other customers is going to upset you, I recommend you opt for tea elsewhere. Don't be afraid to ask the staff for anything - they're very kind.

The Food:

There is a very impressive tea menu, with a wide variety of black, green, and herbal teas. A personal favourite is the Monk's Blend. The tea is served in tea pots with cozies, with china creamers, and the table is set with china teacups and various sweeteners. I assume that if one wanted lemon or honey with their tea, they only need to ask.

Beyond the tea, the food menu features a small selection of pies, scones, and other British favourites. The scone with devon cream and jam is filling, with a large, hot scone and generous amounts of cream and jam. The High Tea doesn't look like much when it arrives, but it is also definitely enough for a satisfying lunch, with a good variety of treats including sandwiches, savoury puff pastries, and petit fours.

There is nothing exotic or intriguing about the food menu. I would classify it as comfort food, but it is well done comfort food.

The Atmosphere:

If nothing else, come for the atmosphere, which reminds me of a fun, eclectic British grandmother's place. English kitsch is everywhere and always provides something to look at. There is a museum surrounding the tearoom, with various items that would interest a fan of British history (turn of the century onwards), including an upstairs room devoted to the Titanic.

There is a well-stocked British sweet shop, as well as a tea shop selling the teas featured on the menu, and place to buy handmade pies and pastries. There is also a variety store with an emphasis on baking and cake-decorating supplies. The entire place seems to be owned and run mainly by English expats. (I have met the owner, who is a very lovely lady.)

As I mentioned, the atmosphere is very casual. The patrons are mostly older folks who enjoy taking tea in small groups, but I have seen other younger couples there as well. There is often a classic tv show playing on the television at a low volume (Keeping Up Appearances was on the last time we went), so even if one dines alone there is something to look at.

If nothing else, try it for the spectacular array of teas available. I haven't yet tried one I didn't like.
