Review Spice Hut Indian Cuisine. - Campbell River

The food and atmosphere was great; I had expected a much smaller, fast casual style restaurant but it turned out bigger and better. The service was friendly, and eager to ensure that she could cater to my dietary needs. Loved the Chana curry.

Awesome food! A gem. We came back a second time when we returned to Campbell River and the food was just as good or better than the first time.

Food was really good, chicken korma and Kadahi paneer , chai (Indian tea) is must try

Ordered a small MILD butter chicken, received a medium butter chicken with a large family sized rice!! They need to listen better to the person ordering!! Now I have enough rice for a week a butter chicken that is too spicy for me to enjoy! What a disappointment! EDIT: they contacted me to apologize for the error on my order and have given me a credit for my next order! Great customer service, thank you!!

Amazing food to cleanse and rejuvenate body and spirit. Was out camping and fishing for the previous days leading up to the feast. Due to poor diet on camping trip I found myself ballooning. I choose to go with the highest spice level for maximum rejuvenation. I had an early flight out of comox the next morning. Unfortunately the airport bathroom facilities weren't able to capacitate the heights of rejuvenation I had reached and began to over flow. In fears of getting blacklisted I changed my outer layer of cloths to go incognito on the chance of being pointed out by the heroic cleaning staff to security. I'm not sure whom was more embarrassed me or my traveling companion he moved three rows away from me and told me to seek out help.

Perfect place for a stopover dinner in Campbell River. Large, spacious and clean. Portions were huge and flavourful - and service was really friendly. The mutter paneer and chicken masala were both spiced well, and the garlic naan was fluffy and warm. Excellent dinner and we hope to come back!

Absolutely love their butter chicken Only thing I do not agree with is if you want the bread with it they charge you for it.. That had got to change it should at least come with the meal...

Consistently flavourful food and friendly, excellent service. Pick your spice level and make it as mild or as spicy as you like.

Great food, friendly staff. Recommend to all people looking for a change of pace from Americanized cuisine. Different levels of spice available making it suitable for all.

Like a hug from an old friend, Spice Hut's offerings are familiar and warm. This is one of my go-to places to eat. Our most recent visit to Spice Hut was on Thursday. Whiskey and I, preparing to go see some live music downtown Campbell River, stopped in for a dinner.
Spice Hut is a small franchise Indian restaurant, with three locations on Vancouver Island and six in total across western Canada. And while I'm not familiar with the other locations, the one here is quite consistent with the food. The only variance is the spice level, which seems to change on a whim depending on the mood of the cooks that day. Sometimes I will order a dish with a medium level and I sweat and struggle to get through the meal (I have no aversion to hot food, I often go out of my way to indulge in it, in fact) while other times it has just a trace of warmth. The flavours are always bang on, however. Seasoned perfectly, (which is good because you wont find salt or any other seasonings to adjust your food on the table) this Indian food is rich and flavourful. It's not exactly what I would would call Indian home cooking, but it's not some kind of western fusion either, it's somewhere in between, Indian cuisine for western palettes, with generous use of cream, garlic and somewhat surprisingly beef.

I don't know much about Indian food but always willing to try. I haven't gone enough to try everything but so far my favorites at Spice Hut are the biryani and karahi dishes. I'm not the biggest fan of their (regular) butter chicken...found the "mild" still spicier than the others I've tried elsewhere and found it not as "buttery" either. Good place, good ambiance..however, it's a hit or miss with the service.

Wonderful Service, Fantastic Food. The staff of the Spice Hut in Campbell river more then deserve an excellent review, the food is excellent, the best Indian food I have ever had, and being English I have eaten a lot of it! Their efficient, friendly and go the extra mile to provide fantastic service.

Bad service. I've regularly gone to the Spice Hut in Ladysmith, and compared, Campbell river was bad, due to poor service. I heard a girl talking about how she was the manager and everything, but she didn't come by our table for a long time, and we waited a long time to pay. They didn't even bring us something to wrap leftovers in. We had to ask another girl who was standing behind the counter. The "manager" was not very friendly either. It wasn't even very busy, so I don't get it.

Shame it's changed for the worse. I recently took a visitor to Spice Hut in Campbell RIver. We both looked forward to the 2 dishes I had raved about previously eaten.
Unfortunately, it was very disappointing. We ordered the Shahi Paneer and Vegi Korma. Each dish was 90% sauce. The Shahi had 5 pieces of paneer and sauce, the vegie korma had 1 small piece of potato, 2 small pieces of cauliflower and then very small chopped what we think may have been green beans, but it was so small we couldn't distinguish. We each ordered our dishes with medium heat. There was no trace of heat at all.
I believe in shopping locally and wanted to give the restaurant a fair opportunity to explain what may have happened. By the way, there were 3 chefs in the kitchen and we were the only ones in the restaurant. Anyways, I phoned a few days later (now almost 2 weeks ago), spoke to a girl explaining the situation. She was very pleasant, took my phone number and said someone would return my call.
I have yet to hear back from them. So, I am left to assume that this has become their new standard and we won't be going back.

Snotty server. Appeared to be somewhat self absorbed and self righteous ... Fake ... Waited to long for food although it was authentic having a server like her will detour me from ever going back . Her name was Elisha

Fantastic! Cheers to the owners.. Let me begin by stating that I have spent my life travelling the world reviewing restaurants. I keep to myself, and do not use my real name ever. I have eaten cuisines from all over the world, and have sat at many east Indian tables to delight in their unique flare. The Spice Hut is truly authentic Indian food. The food I ate here reminded my of my good friends wife's cooking back in India. I have eaten at them all, from Albert to Campbell River, my last experience was Comox. I do not review only the food, I review the entire experience. Let me tell you this, of the thousands of restaurants I have eaten at nothing compares to the 2 ladies I witnessed myself. The only sad moment of my dinner was when the Dynamic Duo was shushed by an East Indian, I am assuming the manager as he had that pretentious feel managers have. They dressed similar, one in turquoise (Jess) the other in purple (Shale). I have never seen 2 servers so in love with their job as these 2. I was lucky enough to be served by one, and my friend by the other; yes we sit separate tables to give an accurate review. These ladies were a continuous smile, floating around in a world of their own. They laughed, and laughed a lot. They teased, they genuinely loved their job. I am used to watching servers buckle under pressure, but I quizzed my server (Jess) hard, on almost every dish, and she answered without a pause, and accurate I might add. She even accurately described a Karahi, and compared it to a Wok so I would understand what she was saying. I could go on about my experience, but who reads these right?

To the owner: You have found yourself a pair of Gems, in an industry starved of them. Hold on and hold on tight, these ladies are your ticket. Your food is exquisite and will speak for itself, I will be posting this same review on many other pages, to spread it to the World. Cheers!

Could do much better. We visited Spice Hut in Comox for dinner on a Thursday evening - it was very busy.
The plates were brought long before the meals arrived. We told our waitress that the plates had gone cold after waiting so long but no offer was made to replace them with hot ones so we ended up eating off cold plates. To make matters worse my meal was delivered cold!!! The waitress was told about this and her comment was that the bottom of the dish was warm. I replied that the meat was cold and refused to accept it. It was taken away and returned at the right temperature. Unfortunately everyone else was well into their meals by then. Seems to me that the kitchen was stretched to its limit. Not even a complimentary beer in recompense.

Spice hut Comox. Welcome to the valley. My whole family tried the spice hut in Comox for the first time and it was great. Great food and very nice decor relaxing background music. Could be the new favorite.

Yay Spice Hut Server!. I had the pleasure of dining at the new Comox location recently. Me and my husband that is. The food was to die for, spiced up perfectly! We had the Coconut Chicken Curry and the Mango Chicken Curry and took home our servers recommendation of Tandoori Chicken Tikka, which we ate cold for breakfast and it was still to die for. The highlight of our evening, however, was our server Jess!! This lady charmed the pants off of us, smiles, laughter and nothing but knowledge. She knew the answer to every question, and we had at least a hundred. The place was packed!! And she still made us feel like we were her only customers! I will be her first regular and dine on her recommendations everytime. Bravo Spice Hut!!!!!

REALLY?. Read reviews and thought it would be good. How disappointing.
This IS NOT real indian spice. Many reviews mention how spicy the food is even when they ask for mild. Tha't because all they do is add heat to cover up the lack of using the real spices. Spices in indian food is what makes it expensive and cost the restaurant money . This is a trick many places use to hide the fact that they cheap out on the real spices that give it flavour rather than just adding heat. So after reading the reviews I ask for mild to test my theory and sure enough, there was no real flavour and most things tasted the same. Their butter chicken is passable.
Don't be duped that hot is real indian. I would only give this place a barely passable, or a skip.

Absolutely love this place! So authentic, especially for a chain restaurant. The samosas are amazing with the yummy tamarind sauce they use, and I can't get enough of their butter chicken with the garlic naan. Hats off to the chefs, and the ambiance in the restaurant is fantastic. And also the super friendly servers! They get a 20% tip from me every time!

Although I usually do not prefer eating at chain restaurants Spice Hut is top notch. I've eaten a lot of Indian and the food here is awesome

I have visited the downtown location twice and and as you can see by my previous reviews i had a fabulous experience. However, went to the willow point location and was very disappointed. This time the service was slow and forgetful, not friendly seemed cranky and confused. Previous visits downtown our server was Carrie-Lynn unfortunately this time it was a girl named Ann, heard her saying she was the manager too :( Too bad, because this is a great place with delicious food and usually great service. But i guess it depends on who is working.

-----15 Feb, 2014-----

My wife and I went to spice hit for a valentines dinner, our first visit here and we will definately be returning. It was extremely busy in there, however the service was phenomenal. Our server's name was Keri and she was very friendly, funny and professional. The food was delicious, even though I could see how extremely busy the kitchen was. I look forward to going back.

Great Food!. Some co-workers and I decided to give Spice Hut a shot for our group lunch last week. We ordered chicken korma, rice and naan bread. It was soooo good and nice and hot (even after pickup). It does tend to be a bit on the spicier side, just a warning to those who don't like the heat - go mild! We ordered the medium and we all like it spicy, but I'm glad I didn't order very spicy, I would not be able to handle it! Very good food, so nice to have a different flavour in town. I will definately be coming back!

First time - will go back. We went to the Spice Hut for a mid-afternoon lunch/dinner on Saturday (Jan 11). The restaurant used to be a west coast grill, so the décor is definitely not "Indian", but it works - kind of a fusion feel, and the open kitchen is a very nice touch. We ordered two meat dishes, one veg dish, one order of rice and one naan. We had LOTS left to take home - dinner the next night. Two people could easily have two main dishes, not three, with a naan and one rice order, and be well fed. Had one beer (good selection of Indian beer) each, and with tip - $77. Very tasty - highly spicy. We like "heat", but in this case "medium" is as high as we would go; and in fact the "mild-medium" would be even better - all the flavour, with manageable spiciness. Hope they do well.

WOW Factor!. Incredible food, absolutely wonderful and friendly service. Price are very reasonable. We had Chicken Korma for lunch, with rice and garlic Naan. This will definitely be a regular place for us...and highly recommended!

Food was very good. A little spicy. Ordered mild and found it was a little too hot. Service was a disappointment.

Loved it!. My husband and I both really like the food here - great authentic Indian flavours & dishes, with a choice of how hot you would like it. Extensive menu with lots of choice. Friendly knowledgeable staff. A single dish will easily feed 2 people so very affordable & I love the space. A very enjoyable lunch or dinner. This is a great addition to Campbell River!!

We have watched with bated breath for the Spice Hut CR to open . I'm very happy to say that the food was excellent . Having grown up eating the real thing I can now get my fix here . So looking forward to trying more dishes. Tip: the medium is pretty hot and this comes from a spicy hot nut so take care .

Wow...so delicious. I was worried it was going to be another westernized indian restaurant. Not so..the flavors reminded me of being in india again. The waitresses the owner and the chef made me fel so welcome.Cant wait to go again.

Wow wow and wow. Loved the food. Fresh crispy and just can't get enough are just a few ways I would describe my experience after having take out! Can't wait to have time to go sit down and eat. I know where my husband and I want to go eat out next date night.
