Rich, creamy broth & tons of noodles. Toppings are minimal, but the bowls are very affordable. Add-ons (🥚💕) are also very reasonably priced & highly recommended (4/5).
This is our go to Ramen place in Kensington. It is far better than any of the other places that I have tried in the area. Without fail, the service is good, and the soups are outstanding.
Came here for lunch on a Sunday. Parking is bad here with limited and tight spaces - especially bad in winter. There was about a 13 minute wait for a table - quite a popular spot for lunch and the place is not very big.
Menu has got lots of good options for Ramen with the usual add-ons like egg and fish paste. I got the spicy tonkotsu - it's just your regular ramen with a generous dollop of spice; broth had good flavour and the noodles were al dente. Kids had the regular tonkotsu and they slurped it up. Wife had the Tonkotsu with Wonton - wontons were small and not worth the extra cost which was an extra $4 for 4 wontons.
All in all not a bad place on a cold wintry day. Will definitely come back but not before trying some other ramen places.
Price wise this place is great. With add ons it would equate to similar type restaurants. I have started to frequent here because the service is good and the ramen is decent.
This was the first place I have eaten ramen in Calgary that left me satisfied and my wallet from bleeding its heart out!! The food is amazing and no matter what I picked on the menu always hit the right spot. 5/5
This little place is a gem that needs to be eaten at! Amazing to eat at on a cold day or any day that your looking for comfort food. The food comes out quickly and is always hot. Delicious every-time!
this is place is so addictive , delicious comfort food , hot spicy soups, i recommend to try pickled eggs on your soup , my fav place in town , good service , clean place
Fan-friggin-tastic! A cold and snowy Friday morning brightened up by a bowl of rich broth and killer noodles. The Kanban (tonkotsu broth) was bold, deep and beautifully fatty with slightly spicy ground pork on top and a pop of cabbage. The Kuro-Ton was dark, nutty and full of robust charred garlic. My only criticism is that the slices of pork are super thin...like a slice of deli meat. I will definitely skip them next time. The service was friendly and good enough for my expectations but it’s the quality of the ramen that will keep me coming back.

This is the best ramen place in town.
Great service. Lots of parking.
Great price and selection. I can usually find a seat during non-rush hours.
Along 14st sits Muku, a small staircase will lead you up to a tiny narrow restaurant with limited seatings and limited bowls. Squished to the brim with as much tables as they could have possibly fit, with some bar stools along the counter to look into the kitchen where the magic happens. Shiki is hands down my favorite spot in Calgary for Ramen, but for authenticity- Muku seems to be riding on that line.
Tonkotsu - ($9.60) -
Tonkotsu Chasu Wonton - ($13.60) -
As the bowls arrived you can see that it had a top layer of fat that was already starting to become a film, good sign that it’s full of pork fat which means A TON of flavor. Which you can honestly taste, it’s full bodied and not overly salty. The noodles had a bouncy snap to each bite which is ideally what you’d want in your ramen bowl. Chasu pieces were generous and they were ridiculously tender as well. Bae had the bowl with wontons in it, he quite enjoyed how big and filling the pieces of wontons were! Only complaint would be that the bowls don’t come with soft boiled eggs. Aside from that, the prices are so worth the amount of food that comes with it, bowls were delicious and service was fast and friendly. I’d recommend coming here, but get here either before prime rush or take your luck for after, the front entrance is quite tiny and awkward to be waiting around for a seat!
I am a regular customer, good noodle, just about the right softness. Rich, hot and super tasty broth, very moderate prices. Kuro-ton is one of my favorites. Black garlic ramen is their signature ramen in my opinion. You can add more toppings for paying extra, I usually add some bamboo shoots. So far, best in Calgary in my opinion for ramen. If you like grilled eel, you can choose to add side dish for two pieces of eels with very small bowl of rice, or you can order the bigger rice bowl with 8 pieces of eel on the top, but probably the portion is still not enough for big eaters.
The restaurant is very small on the inside. The most amount of people that one could have, would be four people. The restaurant serves traditional looking ramen. The ramen is delicious and there are croquettes available to eat. There is green tea mochi ice cream for dessert and the portions of the food is alright. The staff was friendly and the service good as well. The inside of the restaurant looks alright.
Been here many times, always order the Tonkatsu Chasu - for the first time ever, I found the pork to be leathery, dry and tough to chew? Hopefully this was a one-off? Broth and ramen was good as always.
Still the best in Calgary in my opinion. Perfect noodles, soft eggs great temperature. Colourful broth and just over all good. If I compared with Japan I would say 3.8 but for Alberta it's the best we have. Cheers
I am not a Ramen expert by any means. My previous experience consists of store bought packages of Mr Noodle or slightly higher quality packages you buy at Asian food stores. So that being said, this was my first experience in a restaurant that focuses on Ramen. I enjoyed my bowl of $9.50 Tonkotsu. The broth was pretty flavourful and hearty. The noodles were cooked nicely - neither too hard or soft. It had 2 slices of pork in it which were tasty. I thought it was a bit pricey for the size - however I am used to giant ass bowls of Pho for the same price or less. I did not enjoy it more than a bowl of Pho. I LOVE Pho though, and now consider myself a quasi expert 😆. There are Pho places I will go out of my way for in Calgary and area. I wouldn't go out of way to come to Muku again, but would visit if I was in the area. The staff here were polite and mild.

I had never tried ramen before today and I feel like I've been seriously missing out! The ramen here was amazing. The broth was very flavourful and the noodles had that little bit of bite to them that you want. We will be coming back here!
My favourite miso ramen in the city. Great service, comfortable space. Wontons are excellent, nice thin dough not over salted like other places. Awesome selection and overall a great experience if you want some traditional Japanese soul food.
I haven't been to every Ramen place is Calgary, so far this is my favourite. It's actual Japanese ramen with a good variety and tastes sides. Some of the stag don't speak English very well but they're very polite. The only problem with it is the size of the venue, don't go here with more than 4 people at a time.
The broth!!! Omg this is one of my favourite places to get ramen in Calgary!! 🍜🍶 High quality, flavourful bone broth and lots of noodles. I had the spicy 🌶 pork and cabbage soup and it was soooooo yummy 😋 Side note...they do provide half sizes for kids 👍🏼 and they also serve alcohol. Tiny little gem 💎
This place is my favorite to go to for Ramen as it has really good broth, however the meat can be a bit dry. They have a variety of different types of ramens to try along with many snacks that are also delicious.
I was in Calgary again and I was craving Ramen. So I did a quick search and Muku came up and off I went. Getting there was a bit of a nightmare as there was major road construction going on in the area. After some detouring, I finally found the back alley to the restaurant. It was a Sunday at 1pm, not overly busy probably from the construction. Place is small, but still spacious enough. My girlfriend and I were seated quickly.
We opted for Takoyaki to munch on before our Ramen came. It was super soft and not crispy as I would have liked it but it was tasty nonetheless. Our ramen arrived shortly after and it was delightful. My girlfriend and I got the same thing, Tonkotsu Ramen with 5 slices of pork. Whoever I decided to add a splash of hot sauce and some butter (0.80+) to mine. Noodles were pefrct, the pork was delicious and the broth. Let me tell you I could swim in this stuff. It was full bodied, sumptuous and perfectly seasoned. There was no broth left after I was done. I would like to see a soft boiled egg of course, ramen just isn't ramen without a soft boiled egg. Overall our ramen was very delicous and just what we needed on a cold breezy day.
Been coming here for years! Best ramen is the Kuro-ton. Delicious garlicky goodness! The food is always consistent and service is friendly and attentive! Best ramen in Calgary!
Came here for Ramen and dessert twice last week. The ramen was good, super big bowl with lots of flavour. We got their combo meal and split it. comes with ramen, a rice bowl and a salad for about $13. Definitely recommend the tonkatsu, and get the green tea mochi (made in house) for dessert. So good!
I am back to my regular foodie hunts. Located down the hill on 10th Street in Kensington, Muku is part of Globefish. However, don't look for them to serve sushi as the signs posted everywhere in the restaurant said. Muku is one of the few original ramen places in Calgary before the ramen trend started more than a couple years ago. I haven't been to Muku in a couple of years, and it seemed that they have streamline their menu but kept their main components. They still have the butter ramen. When I was in university, all I hear about this place was the butter ramen and how it made the broth creamy and taste better - the more butter the better.
There was a line up while we waited for seats to open up, and on the front door you see a sign with a picture saying "No sushi", no doubt they get a lot of people skipping the wait at the Globefish next door to check out this place. The restaurant is relatively small but has a lot of interesting Japanese art on the walls and creates a very nice, cheerful feeling. I ordered the Tonkatsu chasu ramen and the broth was very good, however it had pieces of fat in it which may be a little shocking to people not used to that sort of mouth feel . The pork was better than at Menyatai's however I still find Shikiji the best in regards to fatty pork toro. I was a little confused as to the way the Tonkatsu broth tasted, usually a tonkatsu broth is a little more milky but this one was heavily meat flavored, reminiscent of more familliar things to me like a chinese braised pork stew. I will have to try out more Tonkatsu ramen at other places to investigate.
Portions are quite large and filling and they come with quite a few pieces of pork.
The set menu ( as I have posted) shows that you can add a rice option and salad if you're extra hungry, or you could also get the half size ramen portion instead.
After being in Japan for 3 weeks , I was seriously avoiding sushi and ramen in Calgary because honestly, as if it would even compare. However, it was time to get back to normal life. We met 2 friends at Muku for lunch and was seated right away at about 1pm on Saturday, note that they did fill up very quickly right after. I like that Muku has 'sets' you can order for an additional $3.40 which is what you see photographed. I got the spicy tonkatsu ramen and added tomago (egg) for a $1. I also got extra spicy sauce which was given on the side. With the sets, came a small bowl of rice topped with stewed beef (you can also choose chashu or eel) and a small salad. Overall I enjoyed the food and thought it was good, however the broth was a little too greasy for my liking. I could see a thick film of it floating on the top...though it didn't stop me from eating it so I guess that's saying something.
I would return to Muku, the prices are fair for the amount and value of the food. The spicy sauce definitely made the dish though. Even if you don't get the spicy tonkatsu, you can ask for the sauce on the side and add it to your broth for whatever you order.

Now this one has been a long time coming.
For the past two and a half years, Muku has been my most-visited restaurant in Calgary. Either as a fuel-up on the way home to Edmonton from a ski or hiking trip, or for when I feel like some ramen that doesn’t taste of rotten fish.
A friend of mine introduced me to Muku (and probably the best ramen and topping combination on the menu) on a business trip a couple of years ago and I haven’t shut up about it since.
Love this place! My favourite is the shoyo ramen and jaja men. Haven't had anything that's not good on the menu yet. My dad has never been a ramen guy, but converted after we came here. This is a small space and always packed, but service is quick so you never have to wait long. I like the open kitchen concept and love watching the cooks at work. Staff are always friendly and welcoming. Reasonable prices.
Love it. They are always busy but it's one if my favourite ramen restaurants. The service is friendly and fast and the food is good. I gave it a 5 because it the best I have tasted in Calgary. It's the closest I have found to what I tasted in Japan. They keep it simple but flavourful. The prices are low so it makes it easy to visit often.
Nice small ramen shop. Noodles taste great and everytime I go I always go for the Shoyu Ramen. The broth is simply too good to pass up on a cold day. If anything its dissapointing sometimes that the place can get so busy, and they need to shut down early because they are out of certain items. But all in all a great place and reasonably priced. 😉
Simple and delicious... when I want a tasty ramen with good service with no extra frills I go here... and enjoy it! Thoroughly! My favorite is the spicy one!
Total comfort food. I love it here. In the winter time, it's the seaweed salad followed by the Kanban. I love the saltiness of the broth mixed with the subtle spice of the minced pork and mellow wilted cabbage. If it's arctic temperatures, I'll get it extra spicy. In the summer months, I opt for the Kanban without the broth. The pile of noodles come with lettuce and bits of corn which make it a truly versatile dish.
Seems like their recipe changed or I personally have changed my preference as I find the booth bland compared to a year ago. Every time we try to hit up this place, they are more likely than not are closed, either: personal issues, out of noodles, out of soup, out of meat,... Etc etc. And when I do get my lucky chance and am able to get here while they are open, the wait times are insane with very rude staff. The staff becomes rude because there are so many people waiting at the door, and the place is packed, the staff gets extremely frustrated. They will ask you to move as your are in their way, so you move to another spot and they again ask you to move, but there is no where else to go in such a small and crammed space. (even tho I'm pinned up against the wall as much as I can already). So is it worth the wait crammed in a small space while the staff yells at you for being in their way even tho it's not my fault as I have no where else to go? Up to you to decide.
Really good ramen!!! Came here last night and had the chashu with wonton ramen soup, super delicious broth! Adding the egg was an amazing decision is definitely recommend this place!
The food is great here. Not only is the Ramen good but the rice bowl too! The restaurant is small but it's nice. Definitely a good Ramen place!
I love ramen. I know all the different styles and have tried most of the different variations in Japan. The one thing I like about Muku compared to the other joints in town is that they get the basics right. Straight up, this isn't the best ramen I've had, but they're consistent at getting the basic elements of a ramen bowl in front of you. Top marks for that.
My favourite ramen place in the city. They don't take reservations, but call ahead - they can give you a good sense of expected waiting time. I always order the spicy tonkotsu.
Great ramen place! My Japanese friends loves this place and said it reminds them of home. This place is usually packed and it is a small place too. Service is decent. It isn't outstanding. There is a parking lot so plenty of parking space.
This is one of my go-to ramen places. The parking lot is very busy as it is shared with Globefish next door, and the restaurant is tiny - you have the option of sitting at the table or the bar, and most of the times I've come all spots are full!
Their menu is fairly small, but my favourite thing to do is order one of their 'sets' which comes with your choice of ramen, chashu, beef, or unagi rice, and a small salad. I ordered the Tonkatsu chashu ramen with chashu rice. The dressing on the salad was a bit tangy, and I loved the creamy broth. I wish the pork was cut a bit thicker as the thin non-fatty pieces were a bit tough. The chashu on the rice was perfect. I really hate onions on my food, so happily, they remembered to leave them out when I ordered.
I wish I could come here more often!
Based on Stephanie's recommendation, we each ordered Kuro-Ton ($9.50). I just loved the smell of the broth. The black soup had this delicious nutty taste, enhanced with the taste of smokey notes of garlic. The noodles were not as chewy as I liked, but I still enjoyed the long, skinny noodle strands. Between the lean and fatty pork, I enjoyed the marbled piece.
I think I've reviewed muku before. The ramen has definitely improved from the first time I tried this joint many many years ago.
I ordered the Shoyu ramen and paid extra for the spicy ground pork topping. The Shoyu was not as flavourful as I had hoped. But the side of chashu rice was good. I prefer more creamy broths and that's just a preference, but I do like to try the different ramen each time I go. I still prefer their tonkotsu ramen.
Great pricing. $9.50 ramen +$3 pork topping +$3.50 side of rice. Not bad at all compared to other ramen joints in the city!
I love this little place-but my husband absolutely loves ramen so we have to come here at least once a month. I've tried their Tonkotsu ramen broth(with spicy) and while it doesn't have the backbone of other places with the same broth, the add ins like chasu and wontons with corn and green onions(that don't cost extra, thank you very much!) help make it great. If you have a little stomach like mine, go for a "half-size set menu" which is a half size of the same ramen, but with a choice of chasu rice(best choice!), eel on rice, or one other thing(I forget, since I never order it!) along with a simple green salad. Great place on our increasingly cold evenings!
This is still my fave original ramen place in Calgary. There's been so many ramen restaurants that's opened since Muku but I find Muku is always consistent. The eggs and pork are done perfectly. The soups are a delicious variety. And their add $3.20 to make a set is such a steal! It's a lot of food but good selection. Service is always on point. And I'm a lady so washroom cleanliness is a big deal. Though it's one stall per gender, they keep it tidy and clean. All in all, I've always had a great experience!
Me and a friend ordered Spicy Miso ramen and shrimp dumplings.Ramen was great, although the egg had somewhat of a strange taste. Dumplings were tasty. Food is great, hot sake was wonderful, customer service was good and the restaurant had a cool, traditional atmosphere. will be back again. Do recommend!
Love their Miso butter ramen! Such a cute little restaurant with great staff! My boyfriend tries a new soup base every time and is always satisfied.
Was here yesterday and got take out as well, however the take out container lid broke, came back today and they refund and also make me a new one... 120% service!!! Love them!!!
Really small ramen place. I think everything is average here. The atmosphere, food, service are all not that great but not that bad. Probably wont go back.
The restaurant is a bit on the small side but I've rarely had to wait longer than 10 minutes to get a table or seat. My favorite soup is the spicy tonkotsu -- at 9 bucks it's worth it! I also recommend the takoyaki as a sweet octo desert.
I love the ramen here. They have the best broth in Calgary. Friendly staff who welcome you in and thank you as you go. A little bit cramped on this small restaurant. Reasonable price. Good service. I only wish they were open in the afternoon.
The ramen here is awesome!! I had miso butter, and everything about the dish was amazing. The place is nice and small, the servers were quite busy which I totally understand as it was busy. Interior design is mediocre but I would come back here in an instant for the great food!
My favorite ramen place in Calgary. A lot of friends like Shikiji on center street more, but I could not finish my meal as it was way way too salty. Both the broth and the noodle texture are really good at Muku. Prices are pretty good too. Place is a little small so can have waiting list during lunch hours.
Muku is my favourite place for ramen in Calgary. Their noodles have great texture and their broth taste homemade. I like to order their tonkotsu ramen with the combo that includes a salad and a sukiyaki beef rice. I wish their chashu was more flavourable and maybe top it off with a "hot spring" or medium-soft egg. Then in my opinion, it would be perfect!
The ramen at Muku's sticks to more traditional and authentic palettes and does not disappoint. The place is small and cozy and the service is fairly decent. The price is just slightly high for the amount you get, but nonetheless, an enjoyable bowl.
muku serves a very hearty bowl of ramen for a pretty hearty price. their restaurant (characteristic to the kensington area) is small, and can get pretty busy during lunch hours, but the wait is typically not too bad. service is nothing too stand out, but it's very friendly.
the ramen broth has a very feel-good made at home taste, the noodles are full and have good texture, and the choice of additional toppings are quite wide. if anything, the chashu (pork) is a little on the plain/dry side, but that doesn't necessarily detract from the ramen. if you're looking for a good bowl of simple ramen, this is definitely the place for you.
muku is soooo reasonably priced and their ramyun is good!! takoyaki was good too. definitely need to come back and try their other types of foooood. recommend to anyone who feeling soupy.
I love this restaurant!! They probably had the best broth for ramen. They have a good variety of options for ramen and the environment is really good. One downside is during lunchtime, the waiting time can get up to 30 minutes but this just shows how popular this place is!! :)
Consistently good ramen.. I've been here on many occasions with friends and I find that their Tonkatsu broth to be the best. The ramen noodles were as they should be: a good type of chewyness and taste. I really can't find any flaws and things to change... I really recommend this place over any fancy ramen places that have been popping up lately.
Pleasant surprise! Came here with a girlfriend and the ramen came out piping hot with fresh, chewy noodles. I got the set menu which came with a salad and BBQ pork on rice. We also ordered the chicken karaage which was seasoned perfectly. Left feeling completely satisfied! I shall return, no doubt.
Cheaper ramen but,,,. Compared with other noodle houses, this one surely has the cheaper one..but I'm not a fan of the bbq pork in the ramen in Muku...it's pretty plain...like it's boiled not grilled..
Best ramen in town but. Luke warm, too salty
Miso Ramen - very nice. Great broth, egg and pork belly. The pork roast is not very tender but even so, we keep returning to Muku after trying other places because all other parts of his soup are simply really nice! The tonkotsu is also delicious. The place is small and there might be a line around noon on weekends, but tables open fast - worth the 10 min wait.
Best ramen in YYC. Seriously Muku has the best ramen in Calgary! I always get spicy tonkotsu ramen and it's always on point. Muku ramen is comparable to ramen in Japan! The prices are super reasonable too. It's always busy here, so you might have to wait, but it's worth waiting for!
Consistent Yums.. I really like Muku's combos that they have with the noodles and a small rice bowl. There's enough variety of noodles to keep me coming back. Their beef rice bowl has been delicious every time I've ordered it.
I admit it's not the best noodles I've ever had, but I do like that the experience is consistent every time.
I find it odd that they are closed every Wednesday though.
Sukiyaki Beef. The ramen is delicious but it was the sukiyaki beef that got me coming back for more!
Excellent ramen! The broth is fantastic. Pork is tender and juicy. Really enjoyed it
The Soup of Dreams. The best part of the ramen is most definitely, the soup and it seems as though there is not another restaurant in Calgary with such a soup. Instead of the classic instant mix soup, this tasted just like it should -- from the cooking of pork bones. The other parts of the ramen was equally delicious, the noodles had a nice texture and the unagi rice had a tasty sauce. All in all, will definitely be back, simply because of the overall quality of the food, and the fair price.
Delicious. Muku is absolutely delicious.
Service is quick and friendly. Restaurant is cute and cozy.
The food is authentic and it is the only place I have been able to find Tonkotsu ramen ( which is a rich broth made from hours of boiled bones which disintegrate into a flavorful broth.) The noodles are a lovely texture and their soups are perfect for the chilly weather in Calgary. Nothing is more satisfying!
The price isn't bad either...
Check it out!!
It's alright but not mind blowing. My partner and I dined here the other day. Service was polite and the food comes out extremely fast. My Tonkotsu ramen was just so-so, the broth & noodles ok, the chashu was dry and not very flavourful (don’t bother ordering extra meat as I did, it’s not worth it). They also don’t include toppings I thought were standard, like the soy marinated egg (you have to pay extra). My partner had never had ramen before and went with the miso style, which neither of us thought was that great. I didn't mind the atmosphere, although the tables are pretty close together. Even in low voices you can clearly hear everyone around you. I recommend this place if you are hungry and don’t want to wait long for food – the food is ok and reasonably priced. One last thought - be careful if you order the tea - it's super hot! And it stays hot for a long time.
Crave. We love this place. Simple and tasty. It is hard to get a seat if you come during their busy hours. We usually go here as soon as they open their doors to find a seat or else it will quite a wait. Food very reasonable.
Slurp slurpity slurps full of goodness. I LOVE Muku for their ramen! Probably the best ramen in town! I'm asian so obviously i like my soups. Plus the candies they give you after are SO AMAZING. DONT EVER CHANGE THE CANDIES. MY WEAKNESS.
Perfect lunchtime snack (if you aren't afraid of the calories). I'm no ramen connoisseur- I've never had a bowl of fresh, handmade ramen in my life, but until I do I will continue to go to Muku for my ramen fix. This place is run by Japanese people, and you will be greeted with "irashaimase" at the door; you can really feel the homely atmosphere here. The space is cramped, but in Japan ramen shops are actually a lot smaller. They have various kinds of ramen you can choose from, but my favourites are the se-abura shoyu ramen and black garlic tonkatsu ramen- both fatty options, sorry. The takoyaki here is really good too, it seems like they make it themselves instead of deep frying packaged frozen takoyaki.
I like it but I have still had better... Considering there are not very much ramen places in Calgary that sell JUST ramen I am a regular here. But I have been abroad and have tasted lots of exceptional ramen. It's not too bad here though, they have a good selection, its fairly mainstream, but the sizes are not very satisfying, but I guess I am okay with that because this place is inexpensive anyways.. There is lots of room for improvement, if they can up the sizes and even up the prizes by adding a little bit more to their ramen this place can have the potential to be a hotspot in Canada. Here are some examples of Successful establishments: Santouka, benkei and kintaro in Vancouver, Kinton, and kenzo ramen of Toronto, and daikokuya of Los Angeles. There is even more!! If this place can step it's game up it can be the best..and it already has so many likes.
Decent Ramen. Between Shikiji and Muku, I think Muku's Ramen selection is slightly better. Best Ramen places are in Vancouver though.
I had the beef yakitori which hit savory and sweet note just right. It's not a meal that will make you unbuckle your belt but leaves just enough room to indulge in dessert.
Muku is a great, low maintenance and reasonably priced way to get Ramen in Calgary. My hubby and I were excited to find an inexpensive Ramen place here. We also love Shikiji but it's a little farther away from us and a bit more expensive. For a quick drop-in dinner, Muku is the way to go. Clean place, friendly service and yummy soup. The miso-based and soy-based chicken soups are lovely. I found the pork based to be a little too rich but that's a personal taste thing. The noodles themselves are chewy and satisfying - the real-world version of the ichiban noodles from my college days. The place is tiny so there may be a wait during prime-times but we've never waited longer then 10 minutes. We've done take-out from there, too and that's a nice option. If you want something other than Ramen, try the sukiyaki beef - it is hearty, slightly sweet and the rice is perfectly sticky. Dinner for two without drinks is just over $30. Not bad for a fresh, hot meal.
Loved it. Friendly, fast, simple. Will definitely return next time I'm in calgary.
Only go there for ramen. Best place to go for ramen if you are looking for something different. There is a variety of soup bases and the miso soup base is delicious.
Great ramen!!!. Went to Japan in 08 and loved the ramen there!!!!! Fresh hand made noodles, it's as good as Japan can get in calgary but with stampeders and stuff. Great place, reccommend the shoyu ramen.
DEERICIOUS. Went down to Calgary this weekend from Edmonton for a tiny vacation.. Normally I go eat a quick bite at Shikiji since it has better tasting and quality Ramen than in Edmonton..
But I gave Muku a shot since I found it in the list of Ramen Shops in Calgry when I was searching up new places to eat on my iPhone.
I have to say, this was the best Ramen I have had in Alberta!! Normally when I eat Ramen I don't drink the soup or eat all the toppings.. But the Shoyu Ramen I ordered.. I devoured the whole thing, drank the soup, I gave no mercy!! I was amazed at how delicious this Ramen was!
I will defiantly visit again on my next trip, since its one of the best two Ramen I've been to in Calgary!
Good food, very filling, my son and I usually split a bowl of Koku Miso. Price is great.
Hot Damn. I had 2 orders of ramen with eel on rice and takoyaki ad siu mai.... Yep - that's how good it was. Actually, my friend paid for my second round of ramen :P
You can't compare this to Edm ramen. This is Vancouver quality ramen. The broth is thick and salty and flavorful - as it should be. The eel on rice was a nice addition to the feast. The takoyaki balls were decent. The shrimp siu mai were kind of tasteless... but what do I know about Japanese siu mai... they could've been imported from Japan at the frozen section in T&T.
This is just as good as Shikiji in Calgary. Thumbs-up!!
Always great service and good eats. Haven't had a bad item from their menu yet and will one day hope to try everything. Try it out and see for yourself!!.
About time. Some time ago, the Sharkman informed me that Calgary had finally achieved Ramen status. I was skeptical at first, knowing that pure "Ramen Shops" are a rare commodity in Canada, and non-existent in Alberta. So naturally, this was a big undertaking.
Well my opportunity finally arrived on the weekend with Brad "oh so savoury" B and Jamie "I want TANTANMEN" F accompanying me on the journey.
Located in Kensington, Muku is easy to get to, and even has it's own parking area...which if you know anything about downtown Calgary is a big deal! Nothing is convenient in this town...which is why I never come here.
I was curious what we might encounter, considering that many of the reviews on the web are actually quite negative. However, they were also old reviews, and I figured things may have changed in a year or so.
Anyway, the ramen.
Three styles: Miso, Shoyu, and of course the all-important Tonkotsu.
Selection: Not bad actually. Lots of variety, making it a difficult decision, which is always a good thing.
Ramen: Great! Brad loved the Wonton Tonkotsu, Jamie felt that her Spicy Miso was the best...but of course, my Kanban Tonkotsu stole the show.
Long story Short: Is there really a bad ramen? Perhaps...I just have not found it yet! I like the place...it felt like a ramen shop...tasted like a ramen shop...sounded like a ramen shop...by god, it WAS a ramen shop! I liked everything about it...including the price - averaging $10 a bowl. All things said, I give Muku a strong 3 3/4 "extra noodows" out of five.
Anyway, my relatively positive review leaves me wondering. Have I become out of touch on what constitues "good ramen?" Or has Muku ramen pulled their socks up? I guess the real answer is, who cares? I enjoyed it, my cohorts enjoyed it...and isn't that all that really matters?
Despite not being a Calgary regular...I will become a MUKU regular. Free parking...good ramen (not great ramen)...and convenience in a not-so-convenient city make it a great place to stop.
Plus, if you need dessert, Peter's drive-in is just up the hill where you can get a yummy sundae.
And don't forget the extra noodles.
Rhythm and Ramen! Awesome!. I would like to thank my friend Chris once again for suggesting Muku. Being Half Japanese and being a true Connoisseur on all things Japanese. He had told me to check out Muku for delicious authentic Ramen in Calgary. I feel that Calgary although a very asian cuisine oriented city, the Japanese food is lacking the diversity and quality as in Vancouver but what do you expect in this cowboy city.
The restaurant is a typical japanese noodle house and has all the best in ramen flavours. I found the menu to be quite informative for the first time ramen eater as the menu has a map of all the different Ramen flavours and what region they came from.
I suggest the Tonkotsu Ramen which has a more rich and savoury broth. I had it with a soy boiled egg which was delicious and it comes with sliced pork. At Muku they offer a side salad and a small rice bowl with various toppings for an extra $3. I had the unagi bowl which was very good and fresh tasty unagi. All in all the whole meal was amazing. The service was attentive and fast. I would most definitely come back to Muku when I'm craving Japanese Ramen Soup. I suggest coming here if you want a change to vietnamese soup. A++
Delicious.. It was a great place to go as a group, and the service was really friendly and quick.
Food was delicious. It's the next day and I'm still craving more.
Good Soup. Really good soup and the staff will alter it if needed (i dont like nori).
I recommend getting the hot sauce on the side and add to taste to avoid disappointment if you only like a little spice.
We eat here a couple of times a month and are never disappointed.
Natsukashii!. First off, I love the 'no sushi' sign going in.
I haven't had a bowl of ramen this good since I left Japan. It wasn't perfect, but my tonkotsu was very tasty. The chashu pork was less fatty than authentic, which made it a little dry and low on flavour comparatively. The broth was slightly less heavily flavourful than I'm used to as well, but it was still a darned good tonkotsu. Very good noodles, and the other toppings were not noticeable, which is kinda the idea... ramen is about noodles and broth, so that's good.
My wife's miso ramen seemed a little plain to me, but she's the miso ramen aficionado, and she tells me it was great. Our gyouza were boiled, not fried, which was a little unusual to me. They were delicious though. Our waitress was cordial, quick, and very friendly, and warmed up further when she found out we speak Japanese. Had a very nice conversation with her.
We'll be back.
Only Ramen Place I Go To. The title says it all. this is the only ramen place i will go to in Calgary. they have good choices of soup base, reasonable prices and it tastes good. It's the only place I find authentic enough and run by Japanese people who knows what ramen is all about.
Good some days, okay others. I love ramen, so when I discovered this Ramen only shop, I was ecstatic. Came here 3 times within the first 2 weeks of its opening. Tried different flavours of soups with different toppings everytime. I think my favourite is spicy tonkatsu ramen with wonton, extra chasu. My only quip is that some days its just WAY too salty, other days, the noodles have a funky smell to them. But I still keep coming back? Why? Cuz all other days, it's yummy and still the only ramen house in the 403
I love Muku and have been there quite a few times. The noodles are flavorful and delicious. The staff are super kind and friendly. I also like the atmosphere, it is very cozy. Don't listen to the negative reviews. You really have to try it!
Ramen-tastic. After a visit to Japan earlier this year I have been yearning for the simple magic of ramen. I was delighted to stumble upon Muku and have visited there several times. I have tried all the broths and I think they are all delicious but the Tonkatsu (pork) is my favorite.I predict that I will find myself enjoying delicious bowls of authentic Japanese ramen on a regular basis. I am so happy I no longer have to pine for ramen. S U G O I !!
Tough to say I liked it but.... I'm torn on this one due to my enjoying good authentic ramen and the fact that I don't want to be a food snob and pick the offerings at Muku apart, pointing out what I felt was wrong about them.
I'll just say that the "soup" we had was okay and leave it at that for the time being.
The service was friendly if not as attentive as it should be but the food came quickly.
Being the only ramen shop in town I hope Muku can turn it up a few notches.
I have had ramen from Kagoshima to Tokyo and Muku is pretty good. I did find the price a little high but what are you going to do. Muku provides me with comfort when I miss Japan.
Looks like instants noodles..... I dont normally eat ramen, but everything gotta have a firsttime...
they menu was kinda small, i guess they are really confedence about their noodles..
we had sumai(shrimp dumping), man! they are kina small.... very small in deed, but taste pretty good! but i dont order it again cuz of the size...
and some Spicy Miso Ramen- not bad for the taste, but the noodles looks like instants noodle, but once you taste it you can tell it not cheap stuff.
we also had Tondotsu Ramen- it was a bit salty, but the nice flavor of pork was really yummy.
i pick Spicy Miso Ramen over Tondotsu Ramen cuz the taste was better, the soup base was nicer and earier to the mouth.
Best Ramen in Alberta!. I have read a bunch of reviews on Muku and have been shocked that people don't like it. My main guess is that the people that gave a negative review for Muku have NEVER been to Japan and they only know Nissin Cup Noodle ramen. Don't compare this to some cheap 2 minute noodle. This is the real deal!
This place is as good as what you get in Japan, maybe even better because the menus are in english =). Highly recommended.
Small menu, but good ramen soups. For a different type of Japanese cuisine, Muku offers a good variety of ramen soups. With a few other options on their menu, the ramen is probably the best reason to visit.
Ramen may be unfamiliar to many people as it's not really served in the mainstream restaurants very often. So if you want to experience why it's a popular dish in Japan, Muku is a good bet.
The wonton tonkotsu ramen I ordered had a great broth that had a good pork flavour to it. There's a lot of seasoning in it, so for some palates it may be overwhelming, but take it slow and savour the broth and it can be more enjoyable. That is until the end when all the sediment gets pretty concentrated at the bottom of the bowl - remember to constantly stir.
The noodles and pork are well prepared. Imagine a thicker, heavier textured type of ichiban noodles and it still doesn't do Muku's noodles justice. The pork slice is a nice addition to the soup for flavour and body. The wontons may have been too much for me, but they are delicious with their hand wrapped quality.
As mentioned there are other menu items and the Unagi Don was good, but nothing that made it stand out from other Japanese restaurants. It was a pretty large bowl with plenty of rice providing good value.
Located next to Globefish on Kensington both restaurants share a parking lot, so be prepared to park on the street or in the adjacent neighbourhood during busy hours.
Simply but good. Staff are friendly. Very relaxed atmosphere. Good comfort food.
Simple and delicious. I really like this place. Small and intimate. The uncomplicated menu lets the kitchen give their time and love to the dish they're making.
I could randomly pick anything off the menu and whatever showed up was always good.
Even went there for our last lunch as single people with my fiance on our wedding day.
The porridge is: simmering. Not the best ramen I’ve had but not a bad place to satisfy your ramen cravings in Calgary. Muku has the potential to be a great ramen house if they improved their ramen toppings!
I’ve been slowly working my way through all of the ramen spots in Calgary and Muku Japanese Ramen was next on the hit list. It’s owned by the same people that run Globefish, which is conveniently located beside each other. The parking lot is tight but woah, Muku is buuuuuuuusy. We got there around 5:30pm on a Friday evening and there already was a crowd of people lined up...
Muku Japanese Noodle House on 14th Street NW isn’t the only Japanese ramen noodle house in town, but for the price, it’s hard to beat. This cosy establishment provides a friendly dining experience that satisfies my ramen cravings. The menu features a concise selection of regional ramen styles: miso, made from fermented soybeans, from Sapporo; shoyu, a soy sauce-based broth, from Tokyo; and tonkotsu, a stock made from pork bones, from Hakata. The ramen noodles, made from the four basic ingredients: kansui, wheat flour, water and salt, gives it the slight yellow colouration and its unique firm chewy texture. Tonkotsu chasu ramen I had the chasu tonkotsu ramen topped with barbeque pork and assorted vegetables for $10. The secret to an awesome bowl of ramen is in its broth and the soup base at Muku was certainly rich and flavourful. Tiny bits of pork fat coated the top of soup which may be too oily for some. The noodles were fresh with a nice consistent al dente
Sukiyaki Rice bowl over the unagi... there’s just something about the thin slices of beef and the marinade/ sauce they use over the rice that makes it so so good. The beef is tender and you can taste just that little bit of fat that gives it flavor and makes this whole bowl work...If you happen to go to MUKU please try their Sukiyaki Rice with the set menu, you’ll like it.
There's something deeply comforting about a bowl of soft springy noodles in a hot flavorful broth. Maybe it's remenants from childhood memories, or just that hot, salty, fatty carbs totally hits the spot in the winter. Mmmm. We weren't craving the stuff that practically lives symbiotically in dorm rooms either. We were aiming for fresh noodles, long, slow simmered broth and tasty toppings! The small and slightly cramped interior space (small groups only!) was dimly lit and pretty busy on the weekend. Japanese watercolors on canvas hung at intervals throughout the restaurant alongside posters of Japanese models, and completed its theme with bamboo designed tablecoverings . The menu had a decent selection of ramen, and we went with the tonkatsu ramen while my buddy went with the Koko-miso Ningja ramen, which he called his "Ninja soup". Tonkatsu ramen This ramen consisted of a
Muku Japanese Ramen is the only place (that I know of) in the city that is dedicated to serving ramen and nothing else.
Scrumptiously Fit Food
+4.5
A tiny cozy noodle house meant for smaller groups of diners. Be sure to arrive early to avoid lineups. Price Range: Mid $10s Food: When you first enter Muku you’re reminded that you’re at a restaurant specializing in ramen noodles and ramen alone. They don’t serve sushi here. They do however have some small bites to start off your meal while you’re still waiting for your noodle bowl and we did just that. Starting with some crispy Deep Fried Squid served with mayo for dipping. The squid were crunchy and lightly battered. It went nicely with the mayo which is my dip of choice. However, I did find that they were a bit oily but since it was only a snack sized portion it wasn’t too overwhelming. I was super excited for my Spicy Tonkotsu Ramen with pork (chashu), fresh green onion, baby corn, Japanese fish cake (Naruto) in a thick savory pork bone and soy based broth topped with a dollop of hot sauce. Before I even dug in I admired the cloudiness and aromas coming off of the broth, both signifying a great tonkotsu bowl. I really enjoyed the broth used, you could really taste the depth of flavour and how they’ve been able to extract the essence of the pork bones. There weren’t too many toppings included but the noodles themselves had a really nice texture. They were chewy, not gummy and held up well against the broth. I liked the added spice to the soup. It wasn’t too hot but just a touch of lingering spice at the end of the bite. The hubby ordered the Miso Ramen with chashu slices, green onion, corn kernels, boiled bean sprouts, bamboo shoots, carrots and dried seaweed all in a chicken and fish brot
