Due to rising coronavirus concerns, the Kokuho rose rice I buy at Superstore was sold out. L and I decided to make the trek up to True World Foods for Koshihikari Homare rice. Since we were minutes away from Song Huong, one of my favourite Vietnamese restaurants, we stopped by for lunch. Since Albertans are still reeling from a hell of a lot of bad news (e.g. health care and education cuts, stocks and oil prices plummeting) let’s listen to something calming. For this post, I’ll play “Violin Concerto in D Major, Op. 61:1” by composer Ludwig van Beethoven.
Broth was good, but the meat quality was subpar. Salad was very tasty though & rolls use the legit rice paper wrap! Good quantities overall. (4/5)
After reading the reviews I walked to here from my hotel. I had to order the rare beef salad because everyone was raving about it and it was AMAZING!! My kind of salad! Staff was great too and the pho was good:) I would recommend
This place is amazing.
The broth is fantastic the cuts are exquisite.
You have to come and try something new each time regardless you will not go wrong with whatever you choose
Havnt been to this new location since they moved. New location has bigger area and same quality of food, will be back! Known for their bun bo hue and their raw beef dish. It's a must
Favorite Vietnamese restaurant in the city.
Pork stomach salad - I have no idea where else you would find this. It's served cold with fish sauce and peppers that give it the sweet flavoring with a bit of heat.
Spring Rolls (order of 3 shown) - there's something to the wrapper that gives it a unique texture and extra crispy.
Bun Bo Hue - it's their signature bowl that has everything - beef shank, blood pudding, Vietnamese ham and pork meatballs. The soup is so good that I don't even add any sauce to it.
I used to go to the old location when it was still a hole in the wall on 17th street. I have been to Song Huong a few times since they moved, and to be honest, it just don't taste like the old place anymore. Don't take me wrong, they are still very good, but there is just a difference and I can't really explain that feeling.I have a few go to dishes: Clam Noodle, Dumpling (without the banana leaf), BBH, and the Spring roll. The Clam Noodle is unique, and not served at a lot of other Vietnamese restaurants. I have been to a few other restaurant that serves clam noodle, but Song Huong has it right. Their sauce is thicker, and the noodle is not as soggy. Their sauce is done just right, and the amount of clam is also perfect. Word of advice, keep stirring the bowl while you are eating, or you will be left with too much clam at the end.The spring rolls, is exceptional and it appears to be using the rice roll skin, which I believe is the same one they wrap salad rolls in. the spring roll is extra crispy, and it is a must try. Dumplings is amazing, I usually ask for extra dry onion on the side. It is chewy, and I think the banana leaf is over kill. the regular dumpling taste slightly better and not as moist as the version wrapped in banana leaf.Overall, Song Huong is my no.1 and go to places for Vietnamese food fix. I would recommend this restaurant people who wants something more than the ordinary Vietnamese experience.
The fact there is no Satay Beef Soup and I still love this place is saying a lot. The staff is probably the best and most welcoming in the city and even though I'm no expert everything feels very authentic. I recommend, the Rare Beef Salad (nothing like it in the city) and the Vermicelli with Clams. The flavors are unreal! Highly recommend this place!
I crave for that rare beef appie everyday!!! It's so addicting!! Their broth for their signature noodle dish is very light yet flavourful. Comes with loads of ingredients!
Been wanting to try Song Houng again ever since they moved to their new digs. We decided to drop by on Monday for lunch and were seated right away. The new spot is fresh and a massive upgrade from their previous hole in the wall digs. The place is huge too (there’s a second seating area hidden in the back).
I tried this place because of my sister's recommendation and surprisingly it didn't live up to my expectation. The customer service was alright and the food was fine. My favourite dish was probably the clam noodles. I have never tried something to it and really enjoyed it! If you don't like salty things, you might not like it. The bun bo hue was average, I've definitely had better stormer locations. Also their raw beef was interesting. When I ate it, it was frozen so we waited until it "defrosted" a bit. Wasn't too fond about that. But if you are in the area, definitely come on by to taste the various dishes. I know I'll be coming back to try their pho next time.
The first time came, feels like the space small but the environment was clean and bright. Love it! The signature noodle soup and the raw beef are the best I ever had in calgary very recommended for everybody!!
New location off 19th st is definitely hidden in a tiny strip mall with a tiny packed parking lot. Heard this place was the new swizzle so the lady and I went to see if it was accurate.
When you come in, the best way to describe it is a large kitchen of a house with modern counters and seating, and you can even eat at the island/bar which I liked for those lonely pho cravings. The staff is mom and pop and very polite.
The food was bomb. Get the rare beef on its own, you won't be sorry. And the spring rolls are legit. Was craving the Bun Bo Hue, and it didn't disappoint. Not a lot of seating, but you are in and out, and as it is a new location, I like it better than the hood... which often makes you feel grimy.
First time at the new location off 19 st as I have been to the old location before. My coworkers and I trekked all the way from our work downtown. The restaurant is hidden in the corner and no big sign thst are visable. We got the spring rolls and it was as delicious as I remember and it's must order. We also shared the sliced raw beef marinated with lime sauce. It was my first time trying it, whereas my coworkers have had it before. I was surprised as how good it was and it was a big portion. It was good sharing size between the 4 of us. There was onions, fried onions and garlic and basil with lime sauce. I heard the restaurant's special dish with Bun Bo Hue. It was pretty favourful but heard from others that it use to be spicier, the recipe must of changed. I would come back and try something else next time.
This is pretty much the only place with vietnamese raw beef salad. Beef is sometime too cold and frozen though. Very good bun bo hue. It's moving location tho. Closing down end of Oct 2016 and reopen Jan 2017 some where by Franklin mall
I come here maybe once every few months. While some say it's the best BBH in this city, I'd like to add that competition is very limited in Calgary. The broth is good, but lacks the natural spice that BBH is suppose to have. The "Raw" Beef is amazing though, I've yet to find another place in Calgary that serves this. Other dishes are good as well, like the banana leaf wrapped one. Pricing is good, it's affordable but so are most Vietnamese Restaurant in that area. I am quite curious to see where they move to after this.
The Bun Bo Hue here is very delicious and the most authentic in Calgary! If you order rice or something other than noodle soup, you will get a mini bowl of the broth to accommodate your meal. The restaurant is a hidden gem and is cash only! The rare beef salad and chicken feet salad is also very yummy!
The speciality of the house are: bun bo hue which is a spicy pork broth noodle with sliced beef and #51 banh loc tom thit goi la chuoi which is a tapioca dumpling filled with shrimp and ground pork and steamed in banana leaves. #51 is why I am here at this place - it's an appetizer dish that you dip into fish sauce. The tapioca dumpling is translucent, slightly fragrant from the banana leaves and has a chewy texture. The taste is subtly sweet and balanced with the savoury flavours of the fillings and finally with the saltiness of the fish sauce. So good. You can't eat too much as it is quite filling. A real Vietnamese speciality treat whenever I am in Calgary.
The Vietnamese spring rolls are also another must try.
The pho tai was ok - I didn't love the broth but they sliced beef was good. I am picking about pho broths. Stick to the specialties of the house.
It's a true Vietnamese clientele. People who run the place speaks English. Place is clean and decor is typical of most traditional Vietnamese restaurants.
Pretty good but not great. Wondering if the broth is made in house, it just lacks a little something something. But it's nice and clean and the staff are nice too.
We brought our own pot one evening for takeout and got $30 worth of Bun Bo Hue to bring home to celebrate a few birthdays. The $30 fed 5 of us, and fed us well. There was still enough leftover to make an additional 2-3 bowls depending on size. It was definitely worth the price.
Tried the fried clam noodles too which were amazing. It comes with a side of soup.
This is one of the best BBH restaurants in the city in my opinion! The only thing was that whenever we have had BBH in the restaurant there is a piece of pig feet which was not included in the soup for takeout. Not a big deal, it's just something to note. This is a cash only establishment.
I have to admit, I wasn't expecting much when I walked into Song Huong, but I was thoroughly satisfied after finishing my meal. Their spring rolls a quite different from the spring rolls I'm used to eating at other pho restaurants. The exterior of their spring rolls is both crispy and chewy, which makes for a different experience. Their pho comes in a medium or large size. A medium is sure to fill you up considering the amount of noodles and meat inside that seemingly small bowl. The broth is quite flavourful and the meat is cut much thicker. Just a warning, they only accept cash so make sure to check your wallet before you head here. I'll be coming back here again for sure.
When it comes to Vietnamese food, nothing is more Pho-filling than a bowl of Pho or Bun with a side of crispy spring rolls. I’m always craving authentic Vietnamese spring rolls (Cha Gio) which are made with rice papers, unlike Chinese spring roll wrappers, which tend to be thicker. I also love wrapping my spring roll with the lettuce that is provided. Not many places in Calgary serve authentic Vietnamese spring rolls, but two places I go to for these are Pho Pasteur Saigon (207 1 St SE) and Song Huong (1704 61 St SE).
"When you are that good, you don't need to advertise"
My friend told me about this place, I went once and I am hooked. My regular order is #1 and #60. (I need someone to share #60 with me)
#60 is Song Huong style beef tataki. chili peppers, dp fried shallots, raw onion , basil leaves, lemon juice and thinly slice beef.
If you feel adventurous, you can tried their clam rice, tapioca steam dumplings and egg soda.
The place is clean but the bathroom is lacking the water pressure to wash hands properly.
Love their raw beef dish! Must get! But its really far from where i live. This place always have one waitress - and when its busy there i feel bad for her! Oh right, and they only accept cash.
This is one of my favorite Vietnamese restaurants! The food is really authentic and they serve some dishes here that I haven't seen at other restaurants.
I have been coming here for years for the bun bo hue. There is always a lot of meat in the bowl and the soup base is delicious. It comes with a mix of sliced vegetables including banana blossom instead of the usual bean sprouts. The pho is delicious as well.
I love the pork and spring roll vermicelli bowl. The charbroiled pork has a lot of flavor and the vermicelli noodles are thinner than other places and the texture is more al dente. The spring rolls I think are made with rice paper which gives it a more unique texture.
I haven't quite acquired the taste for raw beef yet but the dish is really good from all the flavors; the acidity, basil, fried onion/garlic and peanuts.
The shrimp salad rolls are really good here as well because they add some fried garlic and onion to it which adds a lot of flavour and they have some Vietnamese ham inside too.
So I've had friends recommend the raw beef dish from here and I knew I must try after trying the butter beef in Vancouver. The dish did not disappoint! It comes with quite a bit for ~$12. Just enough acidity to the beef and sweetness from the onions, And the crunchy stuff on top added more bite ( think they were dried onions?). So being famous for their bun Bo hue, naturally I ordered that too... And I'm not a huge fan of BBH but it was good here. I would definitely come back for the raw beef.
ONE of my favourite places for PHO & authentic. I fell in love with the spring rolls and raw beef here. The spring rolls are made with the rice paper, not just the wonton sheets. The raw beef is soo tasty and they give you alot. for all you beef tataki lovers, you must try this.
I had the BBH here and the soup was really tasty. just enough spice mmmm
It's one of the place that I always crave to go for their food in Calgary. Owner and staff are friendly! It is not a fancy place with fancy food, it is mostly traditional Vietnamese street food but they are super delicious! Raw beef and Bun bo hue best in town! Brilliant
The Raw Beef Salad is what I come here for. It looks really weird at first but, it's sooo good. The Pho and Bun Bo Hue here is alright. The pricing is good for the quality of the food. But, it's cash only which is an inconvenience for me personally. Overall, I recommend this place!!
Raw beef, spring rolls and bun bo hue!! Always must haves. The service is amazing too for a Vietnamese place. Be aware it's as cash only though!
Hue comfort food. There is a homely feel to this restaurant. Feels as though i am invited to a viet friend's house for dinner. There are a few dishes on the menu that arent commonly seen in vietnamese restaurants, so be adventurous.
Note: Bun bo hue here is much more sweet and a lot less spicy than most places. But you can always add more heat with the side condiments.
MUST EAT: raw beef salad - warning: asian spicy spicy but oh so good.
Neighbourhood gem. Always a busy spot with great food and this place has not changed in a decade.
Still awesome!. Love love this place, food is so good. Friendly service but there was a few times where the tea cups and dishes were dirty.
Great food!!. We drive 30-40 mins every Sunday for the last 3 years from far NW just to have their famous bun Bo hue!!! Not to mention their delicious raw beef (#60) salad rolls and spring rolls!! I have to say that the springs rolls are definitely different because they wrap it in salad roll skin instead, then deep fried, but I love them! I've been looking everywhere for authentic bun Bo hue and have only found most restaurants to use the basic pho broth with added hot spices. This restaurant though is know for this soup and is fresh everyday! Bun Bo hue (#1). We love the food so much that we brave the winter snow storms to eat here every week. Thank you for great authentic Vietnamese food!
J&P
Best raw beef and bun bo hue! Even though it's a far drive for us it's totally worth it! We often bring our own pot to bring home some bun bo hue. The price is pretty reasonable $40 to serve 6 and it comes with all the noodles, meats and veggies. Lazy days? Bring it on! And don't forget to bring cash!
Great place to eat in SE area. I was recommended by a few friends to try out this place. When I got there, I just realized that the food is the same as the one in Vancouver on Nanaimo street. It was one of my favourite place for Bun Bo Hue and Bun Hen. I was so happy that they have the same one in Calgary. Definitely recommend this place. It is cheap and the food is authentic. Love it!!!!!
I loooove song Huong. My family and I constantly come here for their bun bo hue, bun hen, and banh bot loc. and every time we leave full and satisfied. The soup is very delicious! The lady there is always nice and treats us like family. I would highly recommend this restaurant
Bun bo hue!. If u like bun bo hue, or duno wat it is and wana try...u gotta eat it at song huong! they are the best in town for bun bo hue....and their spring rolls are amazing!! not like the original ones with 'egg' wrapped and deep fried....their srping rolls are wrapped with RICE paper then deep fried. SOO GOOD!! must try :)
Can not beat the authentic taste of pho. Lots of meat in their soups and cheap prices like they always been. Nowadays u can't find prices like this.
The Raw Beef Salad in Lime Sauce was brought to the table first and our faces lit up after the first taste. I know what you’re thinking – raw beef at a hole-in-the-wall Vietnamese restaurant…probably not the best idea right But I assure you it is one of the best damn things I’ve tasted all year. Don’t worry, it’s fresh and we didn’t get sick from eating it. This salad is like an explosion of flavor – sweet, salty, sour, spicy all in one and perfectly balanced with the beef, onions, Thai basil, crispy shallots an
I think Song Huong’s bowl did a pretty good job with authenticity, coming with toppings of pork knuckle, beef slices, sliced Vietnamese ham, and pig blood. The broth was not as sweet as some of the broths I’m use to, nor was it spicy despite its red-ish hue. Joe seemed to enjoy it though, stating that if it was spicier, this would be the best bowl he’s ever had!
I love the vermicelli bowls here at Song Huong. I like how they’re not just served with bean sprouts and shredded lettuce/carrots but rather a unique blend of shredded greens that I have not seen elsewhere. The meats are always perfectly seasoned and grilled and I just can’t get enough of it.
Listen, the value at Song Huong is unbeatable. I hope it stays that way.
