Chong Fat is one of my favorite Chinese restaurants of all time. I live in California and travel to Asia extensively, but Chong Fat has the BEST authentic Chiu Chow food I've ever had. If you're in Calgary, you'll have to try this place. It's cash only and a hole in the wall, but super delicious and authentic. Its been open for over 20 years.

I always order the signature items: Chiu Chow soy sauce braised duck, curry, and meat balls noodles soup. The duck with the sweet vinegar sauce is super good.. and the meatballs are all made in-house. The braised beef brisket noodle soup is on point as well. Honestly, you can't go wrong with any of the menu items. Oh and their housemade chili oil is very unique/ fragrant. Can't wait to come back the next time I visit family in Calgary!

This place is amazing. I make sure to go here every time I visit Calgary from California. My favorites are the duck, noodle soup, and intestine. The quality is super high and the food isn't saturated with preservatives in typical restaurants. One of the healthiest Chinese places I have ever eaten at. Food is great and service is warm and welcoming. Stop by for lunch and you won't be disappointed!

What is this mystery dish? Eggplant, tofu and peppers are stuffed with shrimp paste. Doesn’t sound exciting but it is amazing. The eggplant is silky smooth. The peppers are crunchy and spicy. The exterior of the tofu is crispy and the interior is soft and light. The savoury oyster sauce has that wok hei smell and taste that I love.

The duck was meaty and lean. I like how the soy sauce flavour is soaked into the skin. The cuttlefish was razor thin, crunchy and not chewy. A winner in my book.

I love this place. It's like a hole in a wall but the owners are super friendly. My bf and I normally get the combination platter with a bowl of noodles. The platter comes with cuttlefish, soy duck and some other variety of sausages or intestines. Served with a side of fish sauce. Delicious!

Surprisingly good chinese food. I always tried to avoid chinese foods in general because of high MSG, greasy, and deep-fried method, etc. But Chong Fat is totally different: most served dishes were prepared the healthy way and low MSG, etc. That made this one of my favourite restaurants.

Dive. Chong Fat is one of those places were you walk by but never give a second thought to.

After picking my parents up from the airport, we thought we would grab a bite to eat for lunch; since it was Thanksgiving longweekend, I didn't think that Chinatown would be busy, and I was right, it wasn't very busy (ample parking but you still had to pay).

However, the same can't be said about Chong Fat, it was busy, and the eatery isn't very big to begin with.

I got the impression that it is family run, and the decor is as bland as you can get. Since it wasn't big to begin with, the tables are squished together.

Despite being busy, the lady quickly asked us how many people, and pointed to a table in the far left hand corner. Menus were served promptly, and teas served after we ordered.

I ordered the lunch special, $8.85 - pig stomach, pig tongue with rice and vegetables. I'll give Chong Fat kudos, the lunch special is a good deal and they had some good choices, next time I'll try the pig intestine.

Being typical chinese, the vegetables was boiled icebeg lettuce with some soya sauce.

I really enjoyed the stomach and tongue, it was the soya sauce kind, and I didn't find it salty at all, it was just the right blend of seasoning and saltiness. I had a sample of my companions wonton and it was good - shrimp with abit of pork, albeit small.

The soya sauce marinated chicken was ok, nothing spectacular though.

We also ordered the green bean with beef fried noodles, it was so good. The beef was incredibly tender, and the sauce was XO.

One downside is that food service was slow, I noticed in the kitchen that there was only one cook and one stove, and everything was cooked to order (good thing).

I have no problems going back, service was decent - tea was refilled without being asked, despite the place being packed as our meal progressed.

The noodles were smooth and slippery and not overcooked, so it was easy to pick up with chopsticks. The fish balls had the right amount of firmness and had a good bite.

The soy sauce duck with mein was my favourite dish ($9.25). Oh my. Cut into thin slices, the duck was lean, flavourful, and succulent. AC knows the owner, who added squid to the dish just for him. The wonton mein noodles were still firm and not soggy even after sitting in the broth for half an hour, which I find happens to often to this type of noodles. I like the squid, which had a nice bounce to it. AC told me that the people who own Chong Fat work only because they love cooking, not because its a means to pay the bills.

I ordered a large bowl of four meats ho fun soup without cilantro ($8.99). It’s actually not four meats, but four different types of meat and seafood balls. My favourite pair of balls was the beef version, the meat tasted fresh, juicy and flavourful. The shrimp balls was also very good, the texture had a nice bounce to it. The noodles were hand cut, I could tell because the shape was irregular. I love ho fun noodles, it doesn’t have a lot of flavour, but I enjoy the slippery smoothness and how easy it goes down my throat. For flavour, I throw in some spoonfuls of chili oil from the side set of condiments on the table.
