Love how you can build your own bowls here even though their menu bowls are already really good! Prices are a bit steep but it always feels worthy when you’re eating “healthy” haha! Coworker tells me she loves their hot dogs but I can never justify ordering a hot dog from here when there are so many other good options!
Excellent poke bowl with a lot of unique trimmings and a great price. Worth the trek from downtown for some superior food at an even better price. The dogs look amazing to although I am yet to try one.
I finished my massage at Swizzlesticks and remembered that a second Po-ke opened up in Kensington. For their grand opening on Saturday, the Cajun Prawn Bowl was on special for $5.00. For this post, let’s listen to Lady Gaga – Poke-r Face. I got lucky and missed the previous herd of customers. When I came in, I was the only customer. I noticed there is a lot more space at the Kensington location than the Centre Street spot. The original location is tiny and it only has a few seats.
Probably the most exciting thing to come to Calgary. Poke is blowing up everywhere else and very happy to have a good poke place in town. This is my go to poke place in Calgary. I've been here at least 4-5 times and happy every time i decide to come to Po-ke. Great portion sizes, protein portions are good for Calgary (not Van or Hawaii size), fantastic layers of flavor down the rice and different marinading steps/sauces. 8/10. Toppings and everything is on point.
So fresh and an amazing value. Basically you are getting sushi in a bowl and I always spend $20+ if I want to be totally full on sushi. This place the regular size is more than enough food and around $13 per bowl. Love that there are so many options. You can also order through door dash and it's delivered for free to your door!!!
My favourite place for a quick, fresh and delicious lunch! Walking distance from my place, I probably go more often than I should but it's consistently tasty and good value.
I recently checked out PO-KE on Centre street with my girl Carmela. There are now two places in the city where you can get poke, which is defined by Wikipedia as: a raw fish salad served as an appetizer in Hawaiian cuisine, and sometimes as a main course. We were on a day off work so we went for an early lunch and a pedicure (girl time!). PO-KE has a parking lot in the back, shared with the other businesses in the small strip mall, just up the hill from the river. We were there about 11:30 – before the lunchtime rush. There are a few seats to eat inside the restaurant but we scored a table on the patio along Centre street on the nice warm day.
Let me start off by saying I've only ever had poke bowls in Los Angeles before trying this one in Calgary. The ones in LA can't be beat, and I'm sure it's even better in Hawaii.
So when this place opened up, I was definitely excited to try. It's about time Calgary gets on the poke hype. Came here around 11am on a weekend with a friend, and fairly busy. Note, very limited seating (-0.5).
Ordered the build your own over brown rice, half salmon, half tuna, all the toppings, their special siracha (?) sauce, and a can of pop. Think it came out to be ~$16. Sure it's a bit pricey, but we're not near an ocean, so I'm okay to pay a little more 🤷🏻♀️
It was very tasty ( but not as flavourful as the ones in LA (-0.5)). And my bowl could've probably been shared among two ppl. The build your own with all the toppings is a lot of food. So much in fact, I had to finish it at the movie theatre ( our next stop). Sorry to all those movie goers watching beauty and the beast that day 😬
I've heard good things about their poke dog, so I'll probably go back to try other things on their menu.
They need some outdoor benches/tables
I checked this place out for a late lunch, I decided to make my own Poke Bowl and I ordered their Poke special dog and two Musubi.
The Poke Bowl I picked three proteins marinated Ahi Tuna, marinated Salmon and Special Scallops. I almost got all the toppings, picked 3 sauces. I like my Poke more saucy. The three sauces made it amazing. The seafood was fresh and tasty. The only thing that they need is Tamago. The only negative thing I have to say is that everything I ordered they kept saying that's $1 extra, that's $2 extra. I think adding $2 for ahi is really pointless due to the 3 proteins you choose one would be ahi any ways. The Musubi was OK. The photo shows nor I wrapped around the musubi so you can pick it up. Mine came with no nori wrapped around it. The hot dogs....I won't order this again. The bun was stale and hard the dog was nothing special. Next time I will try the burrito, but for sure I will have their Poke Bowl again
Love love love all the toppings and options. Everyone says that it's overpriced, but you get so much ahi and poke, that it's totally worth it! All they are missing is a patio!
We were so excited to try out Po-Ke last weekend and it did not disappoint! First of all it's located in a strip mall on centre street just north of Rotary Park and there's lots of parking in the back.
When we went it wasn't too busy so we were able to place our order fairly quickly. The staff were very friendly and efficient. There aren't many tables inside but we managed to snag one outside and it was a beautiful day out so it was perfect!
We got the Po-Ke Special Bowl and the Spicy Po-Ke Classic Burrito to share. The Special bowl was good; it had tuna and salmon mixed with Po-Ke's special sauce, seaweed salad, avocado, mandarin oranges, masago, shredded nori, sesame seeds and unagi sauce and we got it on white rice. We really liked the flavour so the sauces were definitely good, all of the ingredients worked well together so overall we were satisfied, our only problem with it is that all the ingredients are put on top of the fish in their own little piles instead of spread out. This makes for great presentation but we had difficulty stirring it up at the beginning since it's quite full and the forks are flimsy, so as a result our first few bites were mostly of one ingredient which is not so bad when that ingredient is seaweed salad, but not so good when it's masago. I know it seems like a minor thing but it was slightly annoying trying to dig down to the fish and rice but all you can get at is the toppings. Oh well, maybe one day we'll get it to go and bring it home, dump it in a big bowl and mix it all up!
The burrito was ok. It had spicy tuna, crab meat, tamago, red cabbage, masago, cilantro, cornflakes and signature sauce. It was filling but we weren't wowed by the flavour. I guess we mostly tasted the rice and seaweed wrap and the spicy sauce wasn't enough to stand out. We did like that it had cornflakes though, they gave such a great texture. We tried sushi burritos at Sushiritto in Palo Alto and we enjoyed those much better.
Overall we were happy to try this unique addition to the Calgary food scene and we will definitely be coming back! The fish and other ingredients were very fresh and we really felt like the portions were worth the price. I think next time we'll try customizing our own bowl now that we're familiar with what they have and how some of the ingredients work together.
The Poke bowls are absolutely delicious. My boyfriend and I have at least 3 poke meals a week. Compared to Kone Poke, at least from my observation, the sashimi portion is much bigger, and the taste much more balanced. What they haven't figured out is their pace. Its location is very awkward for the downtown crowd, but on a good summer day a stroll to and back is very doable. But there is no reason that with a line-up of 4 people, assembling a few bowls of raw ingredients should take 20-30 minutes. The staff is young and visibly inexperienced with how to efficiently turn out food. For example, I watched a girl scoop up the last of the avocado from the tray to make my bowl, but instead of pushing the bowl through the assembling line, she set it aside and began moving, switching, filling a new tray...she did all of that prep for a lineup of no one then went back to making my bowl. There was literally nobody behind me, could you not have finished serving first then prep/cleanup during your downtime? Po-ke just doesn't have the speed of other more mature establishments. Compare to Kone Poke, which has a subway style make-your-own approach, Po-ke is in a much better position to speed it up. I asked one of the guys how many Special Bowls they turn over in a day, he said he had no idea. That's really basic information. I highly urge the owners to figure out patterns of behavior, what products are most popular on which day and what time, and prep as much as you can. For example, if you know the special bowls are the most popular, before rush hour hits, have pre-made ones sitting there. So people can pick up and go. Even if half ready, like having bowls half filled with spinach, or rice then quickly layer on the fish & veggies on demand. With UberEats now the wait is less frustrating because you can't witness the lack of urgency displayed by the staff. But for now, despite the delicious food, regardless of how busy, there is no 'good time' to visit Po-ke.
I got the salmon poke bowl and it was SO good! Wish I had gotten the large bowl (3 scoops of rice) instead of regular (2 scoops) because I was still really hungry after..
Also, it seems pretty pricey. If I'm paying $15 (regular size) for a bowl of food I hope it would have fill me up lol
I became obsessed with poke after visiting Hawaii so I'm so excited to be able to get it in Calgary now! It's pricey (poke in Hawaii is super cheap) but it's so delicious and fresh. I like to make my own regular custom bowl with spicy and marinated tuna topped with onion, cucumber, avocado, seaweed salad, and various sauces. My only complaint is that the musubi is impossible to pick up and eat since it's wrapped in a tiny piece of nori and the rice isn't hand formed.
DELICIOUS! Made the drive here from NW Calgary on Friday afternoon, it was about 2:30 in the afternoon but it was still lined up out the door. It moved quickly though, and gave me time to browse the menu to decide what I wanted... then change my mind a million times, there is so much to chose from! I settled on the Hurricane Bowl, since it basically was a build yourself, with all the fixings. I went marinated ahi and special scallop... I picked the large (3 scoops of protein) and my eyes were WAY bigger than my stomach, so will get the regular (2 scoops) next time. Everything was super fresh and all around amazing. Lots of staff, they were helpful and moved quickly, made the drive well worth it. I can't wait to get back here and try one of the sushi burritos.
Love it. We need one in every neighbourhood. We had three different bowls. I couldn't make up my mind so I went for a build your own and piled it on. So Fresh. But it's more a grab and go since there's only 5 seats at the window.
Food was really good, more of a take out place as the seating is limited. Service was OK, they're new and busy so maybe they're overwhelmed? I'll go back for sure as the food is good hopefully there a little more upbeat.
I love eating poke in Hawaii so was excited to hear about a place where we can have some in calgary. Came right at 11am when they opened last Sunday and there was already a line up couple mins in. I was surprised to see that there was no real place to seat down to eat. Luckily ppl were leaving after they ate and we grabbed the 4 person bench table by then window. Other than that it was more of a takeout and go place. I got rice with the salmon bowl and all the @ingredients were paired nicely and was super tasty. The musubi was good but I help had a little too much rice. The service was a bit slow since employees were still learning the menu and due to the small space behind the counter and lots of staff trying to maneuver around was crazy and made service slow. My friends got a sushi burrito and the poke dog. Both looks good, I will have to try next time.
Went for lunch today and it was super tasty and fresh. Arrived when they opened (11am) and was in and out in 10 minutes. The only thing that would stop me from making this place a regular stop for me is the price. A regular bowl with 2 scoops of Po-ke is either 12.95- 13.95. They do give you a lot of fixings like tamago, avocado and wakame but for a walk in take out place I would have hoped that the prices would be a little bit cheaper. However I was full afterwards and will definitely be back to try other combinations.
I chose to build my own bowl with marinated salmon and special scallop. Fresh and flavourful. Many tasty toppings to choose from almost like unlimited choice. Good portion for the price, but the staff still seems undertrained. I tried my bowl with Poke signature sauce that was really good. Looking forward to try some other combinations next time!
The food was great! However, some of the staff seemed confused and undertrained. I will be definitely going back and I hope te whole staff gets into the swing of things.
Awesome! Poke was delicious! Also tried the Poke Dog. Pretty good but could use a larger dog. Only downfall: not enough seating. I might be back later if they're not sold out.
FINALLY.....we have been waiting for poke to come to YYC.
Gotta say it was worth the wait.
Amazing service, good portions and very flavorful.
Would recommend...the seafood is soo fresh.
Food is pretty good, but staff seem very under trained as they seem very slow and inefficient. Waited probably 20-25 mins just to get food when there wasn't that many people in front. Had to repeat things to the one white girl that works there multiple times and she seems like she doesn't know what goes in what bowl. I ordered a hurricane and didn't even get everything that was supposed to come with it.
Been waiting for a Poke place to open up in Calgary. Every since I've been to Hawaii Ive been craving this. Very fresh and filling bowl! Dropped by during lunch and was in and out in less than 10 mins. Very efficient and friendly staff.. Will be a regular
