Reviews T. Pot China Bistro

Before I get into it here’s a little context about my review; I’m a 30 year old white dude with two little kids. I love Chinese food, Dim Sum especially. We’ve eaten at nearly every place in the city... here’s what I think.

T.Pot is in the NW, in a predominantly Asian community next to a huge Asian supermarket... check.

Place looks a little bit sketchy inside, nothing to raise a flag but lots of stuff and knick knacks everywhere, a typical sign of a good Asian restaurant... check.

Hostess and wait staff are short and to the point. They’re always busy and you never see them standing around. At times other white folk may assume they’re rude, they’re not. They’re just busy, and sick of getting you a fork because you can’t use chopsticks, can we really blame them for that?... check.

The food is the best in the city, the white people stuff at least. The shu mai, Hargow, rice crepes, turnip cake in XO, green beans and pork... it’s all real good. My daughter really likes Dim Sum that comes on carts but she’s only 3 and can’t drive. She goes where we go... check.

Here’s a few secrets I’ve learned from my Dim Sum adventures. Go early, Asian people tend to sleep in or do some early morning activity I’m not aware of. Show up at 9am and you have the whole place to yourself, show up at 11am and be prepared to wait. Next tip is to be the boss, these people aren’t going to wait on your every hint that you need their assistance. Show a little assertion, done with that Dim Sum card? Stand on your chair and wave it in the air. Waiting for your bill? Stand up and yell “Who wants the money?”, you’ll get an answer real quick. Lastly, smile. Asian people love smiles, more than white people who go around giving them out willy nilly! Be happy, be forgiving, be hungry!

Came back from Vancouver, my first meal in Calgary was DimSum. After picking me up from the airport, my boyfriend took me to the closest Chinese Restaurant for breakfast. The name of the restaurant called T Pot China Bistro. It located on Harvest Hills Blvd North. The restaurant itself stands alone and its anchored by T&T Supermarket and many other restaurants. It was our first time having food at this place.

We stopped by the restaurant was very early Sunday morning. It was around 9:00 am when the restaurant just opened. It was not very busy at that time which was a great sign. We got a seat pretty after and began to order our meal. After discussed with each other, my boyfriend and I decided to order:

Steamed Chicken Feet in Special Sauce
Steamed Spare Rib in Black Bean Sauce
steamed Shrimp Dumplings
Seafood & Meat Rolls in abalone Gravy
Baked BBQ Pork Pastry
Deep Fried Shrimp Spring Rolls
Rice Crepe Wrapped Chinese Dough with Crispy Dried Pork on Top
Baked Egg Tart

All the food came out of the kitchen was not so long. All the food was very fresh and well cooked, which was great. My favorite dishes in our orders are Steamed shrimp dumplings ($6.50), steamed chicken feet in special sauce ($5.95), and Rice crepe wrapped Chinese dough with crispy fried pork on top ($6.50). Steamed shrimp dumplings, there are 5 dumplings in the dish. One baby size one and other four are regular sized dumplings. The shrimp were very fresh and tasty. The Chicken feet was cooked till so soft with very special flavors on top, which was yummy. Rice crepe wrapped Chinese dough with crispy fried pork on top was my boyfriend's most favorite dishes. They provided us three different dipping sauces for this dish, such as sweet soy sauce, hoisin, and peanut sauce. My boyfriend preferred to dip it with peanut sauce more. I love the all three sauce combine together. So tasty. That was so much food for two of us and also was a pretty nice Dim Sum meal for us. We were super full in the end and we had to take two big boxes food back to home. The prices of the food were OK. Not too expensive and not too cheap. It was based on the size of the dish. The small dishes were $4.95 each, Mediums were $5.95, Larges were $6.50, the Special sizes were $7.50. It was not bad, we spent like $50.00 for dim sum and we still had lots of leftovers. Definitely, we will come back to T- Pot China Bistro again very soon. High recommend to people about this place.

Growing up in Toronto eating dim sum whether it was downtown or in Scarborough/Richmond Hill was great. It was cheap, fresh, varietal and always very good.
Calgary only has a couple spots I’ll go to and this is one of them. It’s busy so get there early with a larger party but they have pretty much all the classics and for my non Chinese friends it’s not that intimidating either. This restaurant group also owns Forbidden City and Suns BBQ which are also great. T. Pot might be the best in The city.

Stopped in for an early supper on a Friday & it was real busy which is usually a great sign. I got a seat pretty quickly & after ordering my meal the food did not take long but I ordered a soup which usually does not take long. I an not remember the name of the soup but had a coconut base for the broth & had chicken, smoked
tofu, cucumbers, tomato, green onion & noodles. The broth was nice a little spicy & creamy needed so seasoning like salt or soy but not a big deal all the veg was fresh tasting & not over cooked to mush chicken was a bit dry but not the end of the world. Pretty nice meal might try to make it in for there Dim Sum.

One of the best places (and one of my favorites) for Chinese Dim Sum and dinner! It's not the cheapest place but it has quality food. They always update the menu with new, unique types of food to try. Service is very good and the staff are friendly - they make sure you have enough tea at your table. The only thing is on they usually charge for tea per person.
It is quite busy on weekends at lunch though so I like to go when it's a bit quieter. I found it's comparable/similar to Richmond's Sea Harbour Seafood Restaurant!

I am so tempted to give it a 5.0 but I feel that it is not fair to give a perfect score unless you've been there a few times.  I went there for the first time this year.  I know I'm late to the party but I loved everything I ordered.  My goodness. Why can't we have this caliber of food in Edmonton? It makes me mad. Why is all the Chinese food in Calgary better than what we have? 852 HK Cafe is the only respectable place we have and it's overpriced and small portioned.

I only ordered 5 dishes because it was only two people. I think what stood out the most was the spring rolls being as fresh and as crispy as they were. The chinese donut wrapped in rice roll was also above average. Perhaps the most unique and rare dish was the chicken wild yam fish maw. I love this dish from Hong Kong and I simply cannot get it in Edmonton unless the stars are aligned perfectly.

I can't wait to come back here and I know most people have tried it. The next time I am in Calgary I want to try that ginger beef bistro house. :)

The food is delicious and there is Chinese cuisine served inside the restaurant. The staff are alright and the restaurant is spacious. The inside of the restaurant looks very nice and milk tea is served there. The prices for the food are alright and the restaurant is close to an Asian supermarket. The Chinese dishes are delicious and the atmosphere of the restaurant is loud.

Tpot probably has one of the best hainan chicken in calgary. Perfectly seasoned chicken and rice. The chicken came out soft, hot, slippery and melts on your mouth. It came with the tomato and vegetable soup so pretty good for $13 meal.

Honestly, of all the places I've been to in Edmonton and Calgary combined, this is one of the best that these two cities have to offer. It's got the typical dim sum hub bub atmosphere. And if you get there after 11, be expected to wait. But I felt it was worth the wait. They have a couple items here unique that I haven't seen in Edmonton. And overall, I enjoyed the fare. I would certainly return here again.

Going to this place on family day is absolutely crazy since the lineup is out the door. When you come in you have the opportunity to be seated in the cafe side which is on the right or the restaurant side which is on the left. Tip is to put your name down on both sides and see which seats you first.

The food is pretty good and like a typical dimsum has a big selection. Three of us ate a lot of food for a total of $80 plus tip. Service was okay but not great as a whole. Though our server Lily was awesome.

Food is amazing but service it terrible! Why such a contrast? The dim sum line ups are always long on the weekends, and Chinese people flock and wait because they care about quailty, despite the crappy service. Chinese people don't care about service, they just demand it, haha. But, it's not bad if you're able to cut through your waitress' grumpiness, she will bring the dishes without spilling.

Onto the food itself. The Chinese donuts are crispy, whereas it's often soggy in too many Chinese establishments outside of Vancouver. The soups are perfect, they taste like someone in the back knows what he/she is doing with flavors. The cha-sew is amazing, done to perfection.

A great place for dim sum, but be warned that this restaurant tends to get busy fairly quick. So please be there as early as possible.

The service was quick and the food was amazing. I highly recommend deep fried calamari, the fried rice, ho fan (thai style), szechuan eggplant noodles, bbq pork bun, egg and cheese bun, deep fried shrimp with mayo, and sticky rice wrapped in lotus leaf.

I would visit this place again if it was closer to where I live.

Taro with pork. This was the winning dish. The exterior was airy, the batter delicate and melted in your mouth. The taro was smooth and creamy. The pork filling was hot and saucy.

The best chinese restaurant in the NW. Conveniently half the restaurant is more formal and the other half is cafe style. I enjoy the dim sum here for lunch. The cafe is where I often go to. There's nothing bad that I have had. The service is a hit and miss like most Chinese restaurants.

Driving into Calgary off highway 2 and Deerfoot Trail, my family and I always make a detour for dim sum at T. Pot China Bistro before heading downtown. The restaurant itself stands alone in a Country Hills strip mall anchored by T&T Supermarket and a variety of other shops and restaurants. On weekends, the large, modern space is loud and bustling with families and patrons, which speaks volumes of its popularity. There's usually a line at the door during peak times, but they provide you with a pager which flashes when your table is ready.

T.Pot China Bistro located in northside of Calgary just off the Deerfoot Trail. The restaurant is quite big and it is pretty clean inside. If you are going on the weekend, I would recommend going early since the wait is pretty long. We went at 11 and ended up waiting in line for almost 45 minutes. The asians in line were very pushy and was really crowded by the door.

Tpot is one of the closest asian restaurants for dimsum and cafe style food in the north. It gets really busy on the weekends, so i usually try to avoid it. I like coming here in the evening or lunch on the cafe side. I usually order a noodle soup or sometimes their dimsum to share with my girlfriends.
The service here can get hectic and you can be neglected lol. Most of the time i do find that the services at chinese restaurants are very rushed and fast, so they can move onto the next table.
Overall i still enjoy the food here and most of the time the food comes out fast.

Solid dimsum. Not as fun as cart service, but much quicker. It's super crowded and noisy, but that's basically to be expected - they have all of your basics and some of the less common dishes, but no silken tofu dessert, which makes me sad. Price is OK.

If you want service, you're going to have to be assertive. Don't wait for them to greet you; ask them politely for a table. Don't wait for them to take your sheet; give it to them as they walk by if you want service right away. For a less stressful experience for dim sum newbies, come nice and early in the morning when they're less crowded.

Like their other restaurants, Tpot is definitely one of the best for Chinese food in Calgary. With great taste, adequate/fair service, and beautiful interiors, this place lives up to its name of its fellow restaurants. Though their counterpart Forbidden City is slightly better, Tpot is more conveniently located for people in the North. This place is definitely a must go for people who enjoy Chinese food.

Located in Country Hills, this place is inconveniently out of the way but it’s worth the drive. The strip mall area is packed with several other Asian restaurants and a T&T Supermarket. We were able to get VIP parking and did not have to wait long to be seated. We came on a Saturday but way past the brunch/lunch rush, so there was no problem finding a table. The menu is straight forward – tick off what you want and flag down a waiter/waitress. Then wait for the goodies to come.

This is the first decent dim sum I've had since moving to Calgary 6 years ago. Food was excellent.

I didn't find the service any more abrupt (which can be taken as rude by Canadian standards) than any other dim sum restaurant, and I've extensively had dim sum while living in NYC and Toronto. Our waitress was actually lovely.

Restaurant was the cleanest dim sum establishment by a long shot that I have ever been to (one exception: Lai Wah Heen at the Metropolitan in Toronto, but that's very upscale). I used the lady's room and it was near immaculate.

Great for a fast meal. I stopped in on a Saturday night and had a bit of a wait, but I was craving a Portuguese Baked Rice with Chicken and that is exactly what I got to eat. My sister had Singapore Styled Fried Vermicelli. We also ordered two hot milk teas, but the waitress forgot about them. Oh well, we had tea so it just saved us a few dollars. Overall, service is very bare bones especially if you don't speak any Chinese. They seat you, take your order, give you your food and are done with you until it's time to pay the bill. You have to flag one of them down if you need anything like a drink refill or a takeout box. On that note, I didn't have to ask for the bill a waitress just brought it over, but then again it was a weekend evening so they probably wanted the booth free as soon as possible. I personally don't find this type of service rude because I'm used to it at establishments like T.Pot. Plus, I don't come here for the atmosphere I'm here because I want to eat Chinese food and quick. That being said, there are other great HK style food establishments in the city if you look around. T.Pot is a bit more on the pricey side for what you get, but it's close and the food is good.

Atrocious? Think Again.. All reviews are biased, and I read quite a few that were very based on food portions and the service they receive. I am all about good service, but I would also like to note that this is a Chinese restaurant. For all those caucasians that expect to be waited on hand and foot, you would not like this restaurant.
You will also not like this restaurant if you expect everyone in Canada to be english proficient, especially when they just immigrated and just found a job setting where they can really communicate without learning english to pay for basic living expenses.
Let's really think about everyone as an individual here, you're no one's a king and no one here is supposed to treat you like one. So don't expect too much, but I do understand the people who get upset from the rude waiters/waitresses they have there.
Don't get me wrong, I love good service, but remember to keep your mind open about other situations, just as much as you should be about different foods.
As bad as the service may be, the food is way better than any other Chinese restaurants I have approached here in Calgary. So if you're looking for that non authentic (even if they state that they are 'authentic') Caucasian influenced Chinese food, with better service, then you are better off elsewhere.

S&P Squid tentacles are the BEST in Calgary. I love this place. We go at least 2X per month.

The service is really hit or miss but it doesn't really matter. If you can sit on the "bistro side" - to the right when you walk in - the service is MUCH better and you are given a huge tea, water, sauces, and a menu to start with.

The salt & pepper squid tentacles are the best I have ever had.

We go for Dim Sum every weekend. We try to switch it up occasionally but this is my first pick! Golden Central on McNight & Centre St NE is also very good though!

Improving. Service last year was extremely lacking and we've walked out (with and without ordering) two times, within a month. If there had been a third time, hubby would've made us boycott this place until he gets over his frustration. Since the beginning of this year, we've been back quite a few times (we're regulars) and have noticed that the service has improved. It could be due to the older lady that man the cash register. We've noticed the poor service was especially bad when she wasn't there. Overall over the years, the food has been fairly consistant and that's our number one expectation.

I know there are lots of reviews saying that the service is bad and yes I have had a similar experience. However I went back recently and the service has improved. The main reason why I always come back to T. Pot is solely for the food. I am not one to complain much if delicious food is placed right in front of me. The dim sum is fantastic and I always leave very satisfied. If you're one to judge a restaurant by service and the taste of the food is affected by that, then don't bother going here. Honestly if you truly love food then you shouldn't be so picky by the service anyways. If you love Chinese food and you don't want to wander to Chinatown, make a stop at T. Pot and walk in with the knowledge of reading these reviews.

One of the best in town. Food:
Taste: Great, but definitely rich (as most chinese food is).
Originality: Lots of interesting creations (ie. Strawberry short ribs) as well as standard chinese fare done exceptionally.
Favorites: Strawberry ribs (supper), Lobster in cream sauce over noodles (supper), shrimp dumplings (dim sum), fried turnip cake (dim sum), bbq pork bun - baked with glaze on top (dim sum). Beef stomach with fan noodles in soup (left side)*

Price: Pricey for chinese food, but not for the restaurant world. Cheap eats on the left (diner style)

Service:
speed: Great, but if it's busy a little slower
friendliness: I'm biased, but very friendly.

Atmosphere: casual, very authentic chinese cuisine (you don't often hear english from the staff)
Frequenting: I'm there at least once a week. A great place for some good food at a decent price when you don't feel like starting up the stove.

*Please note: Upon entrance, left side of the restaurant is diner style (you can still get all the stuff from the right side) - more casual service. Right side is the more formal side for sit down family dinners, etc.

The best dim sum in Calgary. Dim sum in Calgary is much the same wherever you go. There are a few places that are slightly better than others, some that are slightly worse than others.

T Pot is the only one that really sets itself apart from the others. The dim sum is delicious.

The only downside is that it's located so far away, and since it's the only good chinese restaurant in the area, it gets really busy.

Our favourite dim sum in Calgary. T.Pot China Bistro is definitely our favourite place for dim sum in Calgary despite a few downfalls. The service can be seriously terrible at times and the waits are usually quite long even when you phone ahead to make a reservation. The problem with T.Pot is that the dim sum can be quite inconsistent; one week is will be delicious and the next week it won't be so great. However, that being said, we have yet to find a better place in Calgary.

This is a busy place -- don't get me wrong, and service can be spotty at times. But when the lineup spill out to the parking lot and the tables are all filled it's hard to expect hand-on-foot service and no mistakes. I'm a regular here for many years, and despite the service the food has always been on the level of excellent. The Korean stone bowl rice with beef rivals a lot of Korean places' dolsot bibimbap, and the fried noodle and soup noodle selections (the wonton noodle being a favourite) has always been tasty. The prices are higher than say Sun's or Calgary Court, but it is worth it.

Yes T-Pot is more expensive. But after some gross experiences in DT Calgary, I am more than happy to make my trek from the deep SW to the NE for my fix. All the regulars are done with extra panache and more interesting ingredients. Execution is good. I've tried 8 other places since moving to Calgary 9 months ago. I've been to T-Pot over 12 times.

I was looking for a place for some good dim sum when a friend recommended T.Pot. I was a bit skeptical because of the rating on Urbanspoon, but sometimes you just trust the source. Dim sum recommended; dinner not so much. We made a reservation; the lineup was out the door. We waited about 15 minutes for a table. Which would have been longer if we didn’t have one. It’s one of those places where speaking a little bit of the language goes a long way. The food came out hot and in a reasonable amount of time considering that the restaurant was packed. It was at times difficult to flag down a server. We asked for so many chili sauce refills that we should have asked for the bottle. The char sui so (BBQ pork puff pastry) was good. I also liked the ja leung (fried dough wrapped in rice crepe) that came with satay, hoisin and soy sauces. The har gow (shrimp dumpling) and fried shrimp pastries were tasty. A for the food, expect Chinese style service, which is hurried, loud and at times not good.
