Was in the neighborhood so we gave this place a try. Very worth the prices!! We got two special rolls, 3 pieces and sashimi and a bento box for less than $50! Rolls were huge (even though I prefer them smaller) and sashimi was nice and thick. Service was attentive and fast. Also they have bentos all day which is nice if you want variety but don’t want to decide what to get haha
Frequently dine in and take out as well. The food here is great and very budget friendly. As of this posting, the menu listed is out of date, so the prices are actually a little higher than that.
Decided to try their lunch bento box and was very impressed by the food quality and service. There are a couple things I look for in a bento box, price for value, variety and whether or not it comes out fast during lunch. I was not disappointed. Miso soup and salad was really good. The dressing on the salad was fruity and fresh and complimented my rolls, chicken katsu and sushi very well. Chicken katsu was crispy, not too oily and very very tender. The sauce they give for the chicken was very tasty too. A nice touch and different from the regular vinegar based sauce. The dynamite roll was a little too plain though, had too much rice, lots of cucumber with small shrimp and avocado. However I ordered the flame roll (?) and it was presented beautifully and tasted as amazing as it looked. Crab meat, avocado, cucumber and tempura shrimp on the inside with unagi and avocado on top. Topped with fish eggs and unagi sauce! All in all, a very satisfying lunch experience. Will definitely be back soon to try other items for dinner!
Four of us visited for lunch. Its a nice room and we were well looked after. We tried a couple of the bentos. The food was good and arrived at our table quickly. Overall, it’s a good spot for those living in the ‘hood.
Yet another hidden gem. This location was found carved out of sketchy area/parking lot. Walk inside however and you'll find it is an authentic Japanese environment and was bustling with tables, which we were not expecting.
The sunomono was weak. Over lemoned, and loads of noodles, lacking the tang of vinegar. Didn't like it, and didn't finish it. :(
The rolls and bento box was well portioned and tasted great. The dressing was a big hit, which had me wondering "what the heck is in this?" It was sweet but not too much, and had me thinking about it over the taste of the rolls.
I've been here a handful of times. I am always amazed with the portion sizes. The rolls and sashimi are on the larger size and very tasty. I would characterize the menu as Korean fusion. If you have someone in your group who doesn't like sushi, there are plenty of other things on the menu to sample. The service is friendly and the speed of the food coming out was most satisfactory.
Came here to order takeout for lunch today. The waitress was friendly and gave us the menu to look at. Hubby and I both ordered bento boxes which came with salad and miso soup. I got sushi and tempura bento with 4 nigiris, 4 pc california roll and 5 pcs of tempura. The dressing for the salad was really good along with everything else. Hubby got the deluxe sushi bento and it came with a handcone, California roll and 5 nigiris. Both was around $12-13. Would have to try dine in next time.
Fresh sushi, some stuff is traditional which I like. I would have given these guys a 5 star as I am a long time customer. Where I'm giving them less a score is...they're starting to give lesser things. Their miso soup used to have more stuff in it, their bowls used to have more meat. So yeah I can't give them a 5 for that reason.
I personally like bringing friends and family here. Though one disadvantage they have is it's mostly a korean operated restaurant. So the waitresses don't speak great english and don't speak Japanese. Communicating with them is a struggle.
Sushi Hanami is a restaurant near MRU that has become a favourite for filling Japanese and Korean food. It's not so cheap but it's very affordable, considering the portion sizes. We ordered the vegetarian bento ($15) and a dolsot bibimbap ($12), both were pretty tasty! The restaurant is clean and neat, and tables are plenty. My one irk in the restaurant is the service; service is not the best, to put it simply. They usually won’t fill your glass unless you ask them. If you’re craving some Japanese food or Korean food for a moderate price, come by to eat!
a very quaint restaurant nestled in a pocket just northwest of mount royal university.
the restaurant decor has a very rustic, charming feel. the place itself is pretty small, so there aren't terribly many tables.
although i've yet to try their korean cuisine, i can say the japanese cuisine is good. the sashimi tastes fresh, you get good lot of food for what you order, and there's a lot of variety to order from because of the mixed menu. i definitely recommend grabbing a bento here for lunch. there's nothing in particular to write home about, but the quality is still solid.
as some bonuses, they serve miso soup appetizer, and a little yogurt drink for dessert! incredibly charming, and a very good boost to the experience, i'd say. will definitely be returning.
A favorite place for sushi. Probably the biggest roles in town. The staff are friendly and the food is good. I frequent this restaurant on a monthly basis. Certainly recommended.
The service was quite fast and the food was quite good! It can be a little pricey - but I feel that the portions were HUGE and we could barely finish the food. The rolls can have more rice than needed, really, but it was still delicious and worth the trip!
After an intensive oly lifting session with Meghan, a much needed sushi binge was a definite must. I haven’t heard of this place before, but it was RIGHT by our school so why not give it a try. Salmon Sashimi/Aburi- seared salmon (I believe they referred to it as tataki on their menu
I had no idea this place was around school! Love the decor and atmosphere and the service was so friendly. I got the aburi salmon and salmon sashimi which were both amazing! The flavour just oozed in my mouth. The texture was superb. I also got the volcano roll which was a California roll with baked scallop on top! I seem to gravitate toward the baked rolls like the risotto roll from ichirock and the playboy roll from towa. This was comfort in a roll! It was so delicious and there was an abundance of scallops! My friend got the California combo and all she gave me were sounds of agreeing with herself. So I assume it was fantastic. She also got the spicy salmon hand cone. Delicious and it didn't have too much rice! Can't wait to come back!
This is a cute restaurant with friendly staffs. A place to go if you want japanese and korean food at the same time. The hot soup was okay. Abl bit too spicy and not much on other favor. The spider rolls are my favor!
This little Japanese/Korean restaurant has a good selection on their menu. My first time here, we ordered sashimi which was decent, two rolls that were delicious! We had the spicy fish soup and it was quite spicy. The bibimbap compared to other Korean restaurants is alright. Looks clean and decorated nicely
Good place but it was slow for take-away, sushi quality was good and rice doesn't fall apart when picked up.. Pretty decent, I believe they are Korean owned, I only had take away but service seemed ok when I was there... order prep time is a little long for next to no one in the restaurant though.
The best Sushi places in town that I've been to have been Japanese owned and operated, second best are Korean/Japanese and then Korean places... I've been to chinese owned ones and they are dirty, overpriced and service is poor... every time... and I've tried several... I don't know what it is
The staff were friendly enough and I didn't have any issue with my order
The fish tasted fresh, the bbq eel (Unagi) was not bad but I've had better, the Hokkigai was a bit dry so it may have had some flash freezing issues or was older...it still tasted ok though, the Tako (octopus) was decent and not rubbery like some can get
The Gyoza were just ok.. kind of greasy and rubbery in texture and not enough filling... I may try them again some time but only with a group so if they are not so great again, I'll only have one or two rather than the 4 or 6 or whatever were in the order... again they weren't bad, but they did kind of remind me of how dumplings or Pierogis get when you re-heat them.
The Maki/rolls were good and I liked that all the rice didn't fall away as it was picked up like some places
The spicy tuna was not spicy at all, but the tuna was still good and the salmon roll was good too, but could be a touch larger in diameter.
All in all it was good and prices are about what I would expect... I would rate it about a 7 out of 10 so far..
Regular customers. Brother in law and myself stop in for luncheon two or more times a month. All day sushi bento and perhaps a roll of some description is our usual fare. Food is fresh, tasty, reasonably priced compared to downtown. Servers are happy and kind to us, food always seems to appear in a reasonable time frame. Always a busy room. Have never seen anyone pitch a hissy fit over their food or service. We are pre-boom professional Calgarians so not of the entitled tw*t crowd who perennially find something to whinge about when their posteriors are not smooched. Good spot.
Surprising. I wasn't expecting much, simply because of the location so close to other restaurants which serve food that's a lot less intricate and difficult to do right than sushi.
I was surprised when I ordered several types of rolls and a sashimi platter. The rolls were delicious and the sashimi was incredibly fresh with giant portions!
Mmmm the food here is amazing! Staff is accommodating and super nice every time I go!
Pretty good food! Some of their dishes lack seasoning (curry) but its pretty good and I will go back! I had a good time and the atmosphere was great!
Specials came back. I used to come here all the time.. I was pretty dissapointed when they got rid of 99cents sashimi. But now, I am so happy about their specials come back . furthermore, they offer different specials on every single day (except thursday and friday I guess). love this restaurant.
Love it. They always offer me good services and foods. Since this restaurant is getting busy and popular, sometimes their service isn't best but that is only when they're busy. I also like that their sushi is all hand made, unlike other restaurants I have seen that just use a machine to make it.
Delicious Sushi On the Go. I found my way here because all the MRU food places were closed when I got to my evening class. (Summer Hours I guess) I absolutely love this place. After reading a few reviews I think people need to give this sushi place another chance. No I'm not the owner or a worker from Sushi Hanami. I'm actually a born and raised Calgarian so hopefully my English is perfect:) I'm heading down there again today and I'm sure the food will be just as delicious as it was the first time. I bought one of the bento boxes and even posted photos of my dinner on Facebook because I was impressed with the food. Try it for yourself :)
We've been going to Sushi Hanami since before when they were called Cherry Bento. I really like they're daily lunch and dinner boxes and they have a variety of other Japanese and Korean dishes. Sometimes their service isn't that great but that is usually when they're busy. I also like that their sushi is all hand made, unlike other restaurants I have seen that just use a machine to make it.
LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this place. I have been going here frequently for a few years now and have never had a bad experience. In fact, i have introduced this palce to many people who all now call it one of their favorites. I eat sushi a lot and have visited many differnt places in this city and others and I think this place is great. I generally eat only sashimi and have never had any "bad" sushi here. I highly recommend this place.
Sushi Hanami is really cute. They have a lot of selection on the menu and really great bento specials. My favorite is the Sashimi Don. Honestly I haven't come across a better price in calgary for big thick pieces of sahimi on a bed of sticky rice ($13). It's also rare that I leave a sushi place without wanting for something more... this is so filling! so yummy!
Understated menu with a lot of variety in its Japanese and Korean options. Prices are quite good for what you get, which is prolly a result of its proximity to Mount Royal U. Bentos available day and night.
Took the wife & kids there for a quick run of sushi. Process were okay and the food satisfied our desire although we're sushi snobs so maybe we missed out on the of the subtlies (for better or worse). All in all it's a decent enough place that's the closest sushi around. So we'll go back some for sure.
GREAT casual dining, food & service!. We stumbled on this place, 3 of us...just plain hungry...and were very delighted with the food, service and value. It's not just sushi...some Korean and other Asian options too. I had a hot stone rice dish which was incredible! They called it "hot"...and it was about perfect. My brother had a beautiful fusion sushi roll - his only complaint was that the pieces were a little on the largish size. I ordered a Mango-California roll as an appetizer...excellent...not too big. I can't remember what my daughter had, something with lots of vegetables. The miso was amazingly fresh tasting. We each dined for about $15...inclusive of main course, miso, edamame and toasted rice tea. The service was attentive and professional. It's not a fancy place, yet neither is it garish or plastic. You can get in/out in under 30 minutes, but it's nice enough to linger and chat over another pot of tea or a Kirin. I've eaten in a lot of sushi places in Canada (AND Japan)...and this will be a new hang-out for me when I'm in Calgary. Nice mix of people too...it's close to campus, but looks like lots of neighbours and professionals on the way home from work...very broad audience.
Best choice in the area. There's a couple of other Sushi places nearby on Richmond Road, but this is definately my favorite. The other two places are quite good, but Sushi Hanami seems to be open more often, has a nicer location, and they have some excellent combo's for fair prices.
GOOD!!. My boyfriend and I love Japanese food, so we visit a lot of different Japanese restaurants. I didn't expect too much from this restaurant because the comments from Urban spoon about this place wasn't so good, but I was actually surprised, and I ended up revisiting for the second time. The service was very friendly, and quick. I strongly recommend the bento boxes!! They have the best Japanese salad, and gyoza. I will definitely be going back.
Fantastic...So good. I finally realized that they started new menu on sushi by creating new chef from June,1,2011. I have tried 3 new special maki so far. Was SOOOOOOOOO Good....Smokey pilly is one of my favorite. Yummy!! Also, I found out they had new combination. I REALLY like to try those one day cuz it wasn't expensive and kinda well-served menu.
Excellent. We have been dining at this place for a while now and find that the portions and quality of the food is excellent. The staff are friendly, facilities are clean and generally speaking a real pleasure to dine there. I guess that why we continue to return. Although I fear that it will become too busy, I would recommend Sushi Hanami for anyone that likes Japanese food.
The Best Restaraunt Ever!!!. This is probaly the best restaraunt ever! the food there is great even though the service was kind of slow! the miso soup was great and my family had a wonderful time of the day! The best part about the food was the rolls because there are many kind of ingredeients that I love and I think there is a mixture of Korean and Japanese food as well. I noticed because I relized they had drinks such as HITE and that is my favourite drink. I think This is the bomb and me and my family will be so coming back for this great food I had in all my life!!!
My husband and I decided to try this place because it is so close to our house and it was surprisingly good! service was quick and very friendly and the food was very tasty. The sushi was simple, tasty and fresh. We will definitely be going back.
Good Sushi - Slow service. The sushi here is better than average fare but not among the best in the city. It is only a 12 table restaurant and there may be a bit of a wait to get in at peak times.
The handrolls were the best within what we ordered. I would order them again...but probably skip the tuna rolls.
I appreciated the roasted rice with the hot tea...it gives a nice toasty flavor.
My only complaint was that the service near the end when we just wanted the bill and then to pay the bill was excruciatingly slow. There seemed to be only one overworked waitress working the floor, with an obviously kitchen staff member pitching in here and there. Thankfully our food originally arrived in an acceptable time frame.
If you weren't a fan of sushi before, you will be now!. This is a worth while place to check out. The food is amazing and the presentation of some platters are exciting to see! The service is very friendly and very prompt. My favorites now are the Dynamite cones and the BBQ Eel cones, a must try. Just so you know I was not a fan of sushi or shashimi, but this place is sure helping me enjoy Japanese food a lot more.
Cheers.
Sushi Hanami’s is good, but I wouldn’t consider it to be exceptional.
We hadn't eaten sushi in a while, so when we drove by Sushi Hanami, we decided to pull in. Neither of us had ever been there before or heard anything about it. When we first walked in the decore left us wondering if we had made the right choice. We sat down, got our tea, and took a look at the menu. I asked the server what he would recommend and he to
