I would have given 4.5 if I could. But 5 is maybe too much lol. Beef Stone bowl (traditional one) was really delicious. It comes with two appetizers and a bowl of miso soup for lunch combo. Stone bowl was heated up enough to be able to still cook the rice bottom a bit. Ingredients were all fresh and combined well. I asked for totally cooked egg and without lettuce, as I am pregnant, otherwise would be more pleasant hahaha. Tofu soup was tasty, too, a bit spicy and sour, maybe a little bit salty but we enjoyed it. It comes with a bowl of rice.
This place has changed a lot since my last visit! The sign has had a refresher, and they now have a flatscreen monitor displaying pictures of some dishes. For banchan, we received daikon and sprouts. Both were excellent. We ordered the garlic potatoes to start, which were hot, crispy, and coated in a sweet garlic sauce. The sauce was the perfect amount, not too heavy. We had the traditional dolsot bibimbap and the pork/calamari. The service was very humble and friendly, and I found the business endearing because it seems to be run by a family with the mother cooking and the father running the front end. They sat down for a family meal with their daughter near closing.
Kim Chi House
This is a little mom and pop place located in an Asain mall. We arrived there shortly after 6pm and were glad they were still open. The food court was pretty dead so we had lots of seating to choose from. I had the Bul Go Ki and my husband had the Spicy Squid Bok Um. My dish came with a side of rice and soup. My husband and I shared two little side dishes, one was kimchi and the other was pickled sprouts. Both dishes were soooo good and fresh, just like a home cooked meal. Just enough spice and sauce. The amount of food you received was top notch for your dollar and it filled my stomach up well. My husband was very pleased with his dish which came out in a sizzling cast iron. He likes spicy and I could tell it was really spicy because he started to sweat half way through his meal. We both had the brown rice tea that you can serve yourself near the pay counter. I will definitely return again, especially at night when the food court is quieter.
This is my go to place for delicious affordable korean food. I have tried lots of things on their menu and they have all be genuinely great especially considering their price! The older couple work there every single day and are always super polite and friendly. I highly recommend you give this place a try and don't let the location (a small chinese mall) detract you from trying it :D
Come early as it gets really busy at lunch time. My coworkers brought me here for the first time and suggested the traditional style stone bowl Bibim bap. We had to wait a bit cuz they had to heat up the stone bowls and cook the meat. It came with a bowl of miso soup and side of kimchi and bean sprouts. It was a good deal for $9.95. It also comes with gochujang sauce for the rice and the stone bowl kept the rice hot until the last bite. i didn't even end up finishing it all and took the leftovers to go. Definitely will be back again.
Tasty little spot. Cheap and yummy. Extremely busy at lunch hour prepare to be patient everything is cooked on spot comes out piping hot. I had the pork calamary bibimbap comes with a couple pickled fixings.
BI BIM BAP! Just order it. Any kind. DELISH. be sure to give it a minute to crust up some of the bottom rice and add the small bowl ingredients they bring (if I was more foodie I would know what they are other than delicious additions to an already delicious bowl of delicious). Be cautious with the chili sauce but, add some.
Don't miss the barley tea (free!).
A small gem in Calgary Chinatown. The service is nice, and the food tastes like it is homemade. The price is good compared to the amount of food you get. During peak hours like lunch etc it's hard to find a spot to eat.
]What you need to order is the stone bowl bibimbap. What a deal! For $10.00, you get a sizzling stone bowl filled with rice, vegetables and a protein of your choice. All stone bowls come with complimentary vegetable side dishes, barley tea and miso soup.
A hidden gem! This place is our go to for Korean food. We have been back several times for their variety of stone bowl bi bim bap. Price, service and food are all amazing!! Just be sure to avoid the lunch hour rush and bring cash as this place is cash only. This place is well worth it!
First of all, the food is great - but be warned. Show up at noon and be prepared to wait 45 minutes for your food. Whenever I go, it's either early or after lunch. OVerall the food is great and delicious, expescially the stone bowls!
Its location, tucked away in the back of a food court, doesn't lend much to the atmosphere, but it's quite possibly the best stone bowl bibimbap (rice bowl with veg & meat) that I've had in this town.
They have updated their menu. I had the bibimbap, and it was delicious. To be honest, I wasn't able to finish the whole thing and I was starving at the beginning. I honestly will return to here. It has great prices for the amount of food that you get. Will post photos the next time I go there. This place gets busy at lunch, and closes on Sunday. Don't come here on Sunday. I really recommend this place to everyone who enjoys original Korean fast food. The only issue is that it gets very busy fast and they don't accept debit, only cash.
edit: the beef bulgogi wasn't really beef bulgogi. There was way too much cabbage in there. The beef was shredded.
So cheap for how much you get! If only I worked downtown, I'd be eating here once a week at least! Went here for lunch and they take CASH ONLY. Got the bibimbap withy the egg on top and it very good. I actually couldn't finish it so packed rest to go. The tea is self serve and recommend that over the warm water.
Best stone bowl Bi Bim Bap I've had in Calgary. No lies, I've been there three times in the last week. It's busy at lunch but, worth the wait.
Friendly and Filling. The owner there is really polite and is patient while you contemplate which item you want. The food is well proportioned, especially for its price. I would highly recommend coming here and trying its bibimbap!
:^). Consistently good food for an incredible value --i can't name any other place off the top of my head that can give me such a satisfying meal at a comparable price. for only being $9, their bibimbap is super, super filling so make sure you're hungry before you order it!!
Good value for money!. This place is a hole in the wall in Chinatown, it is easy to miss if you aren't looking for the sign outside the "mall" that it is located in.They only take cash though- so make sure you have some handy! For $22, me and my friend got a wonderful and filling meal! It was a Korean style seafood hot pot with sides of kimchi and rice. I would highly recommend this to anyone looking for a nice Korean meal. No complaints!
One of Calgary's best kept secret when it comes to Korean food! After living in Korea, I can really appreciate good Korean fare and this place does it well with excellent service and good value!
Great lunch!. Had their pork and calamari hot bowl and it was delicious! Great food for a good price, would recommend if you're in the area. Make sure to bring cash since you can't pay with debit or credit!
Delicious!. My boyfriend and I came here during the evening on Canada Day and like most places in the area, it was busy. I had eaten a Vietnamese sub at a different (and also busy) place earlier but was still hungry and we ventured into the little food court and found Kim Chi House with a bubbling crowd. having seen reviews on Urban Spoon before, we decided to give it a try.
We ordered the pork tofu kimchi noodle soup (I can't remember the actual name) and it came out in a very large bowl along with rice and a kimchi side dish. For that price (around 9), I was very impressed. The soup was delicious and extremely flavourful. I will definitely come back again to try their other dishes!
Good value. By far my favourite Korean place. I always want to try something different, but I can't resist their bibimbap. It's delicious and the best I've had. The price is cheap, they've got free water and barley tea as well. It can be busy during the lunch hour so come early or be prepared to wait and they only take cash.
China Town's Best Kept Secret. Great Korean food at very reasonable prices! Good service too! I've never written a review for any place before, but I enjoyed this place so much that I want to promote their restaurant!
Love this place!. I am a regular at Kim Chi House and what I love most about it is you get great food inexpensively and here's the kicker: they are always consistent. They are a true family-run establishment, ran by mom and pops, occasionally their two daughters (I think). They are the sweetest people :) Without fail, my kalbi ribs are ALWAYS marinated and grilled to perfection, ddeokbeokki savoury and spicy, and my bibimbap fresh and sizzling and its stone bowl. You can't go wrong with getting takeout from here, but the barley tea is a nice addition to your meal. Their kimchi is perfect too. My top favourites are kalbi, ddeokbeokki, bibimbap, and spicy chicken bulgogi. The only thing I didn't like here was their naengmyeon, but I don't know if it's just me not liking cold noodles.

Pretty Good Food for Price. This is located in a food court type of area. The food was cooked quite well and we all enjoyed our dishes. My friends got those hot stone bowls, which looked amazing. I had #2 beef, which was flavoured really well.
The price is really good (only paid $10 for a can of pop, massive plate of beef, and bowl of rice). The food was made really quickly too, which was great because I was starving.
Nothing to really write home about, or declare as life-changing, but a good place to a grab a quick and cheap bite downtown.
I should add, not a great place if you're vegetarian, (which I'm not anymore but helpful to know).
Fantastic. Wasn't too sure what to think given the location. I had the stone bowl bi bim bap and it was perfect. Awesome meal I'll definately be back!
Best bang for your buck. I agree with most of the reviews here. This place is very affordable, delicious, and filling!
I've been here a few times since I work just a block away. I've ordered the Lunch Specials (Spicy Pork and Kalbi) as well as the cold noodle dish. If you go around lunchtime, expect to have to wait a bit. It's a small place with what seems to have only 3/4 employees, so wait times can be long if you go there between noon - 1pm. Overall, it's a nice Korean fix if you ever have a craving (which for me, is often).
Totally worth it. Jon and I are regulars here, it fixes up our korean food cravings for such a cheap price but don't let it fool you either. Food is great, and we've never left disappointed. Obviously food courts aren't the best place to enjoy your meal, but once you get a taste of the food, it's worth it! Stone bowls are really great, and are always a favorite!
Good and cheap. My friend and I were looking for a cheap, quick place for lunch today and she mentioned Kim Chi House being such a place. It's situated in a food court and gets pretty busy if you go around lunch time. We went around 11:40am and got our food very quickly. I had the lunch special while my friend had the pork tofu kimchi soup. Portions are quite large and prices are very reasonable ($8.50 for each of our combos) and is much cheaper than eating at an actual restaurant! The taste was also pretty good. I can't wait to come back and try more items. Owner is also a bit blunt when you're taking a teeny bit too long ordering but at least he is very efficient. Note that it's cash only.
The Korean hot pot here is pretty legit. Can't wait to go back.
I'm Korean and I go there to fix my cravings. Everything is so delicious and the prices are decent. Thank goodness I can get a hot Korean meal near home! They also sell kimchi in small, medium and large containers!
Never had a bad meal there. Fast food price, good service and quality food. Great side dishes like Bean Spouts and Kimchi to go with your main dish. The owner seems always have a smile on his face.
Some gems here- and cheap!. Let me first recommend that you try this place on the weekend- it's very busy for weekday lunch and it took forever (like 40 minutes) for me to get a plate of not-all-that-great tak bok ki (too much onion, not enough rice cake) the last time I tried. Weekends are another story completely- less crowded, faster service. My fave dishes here are the dolsot bibimbap and the excellent spicy pork "bulgogi" which of course is not bulgogi at all but who cares- delicious with a tiny two banchan sides but that's better than any other korean fast food places.
Great food for the price!. I have come here a couple of times in the past few years, and the taste and quality never fails to impress me!
Although portion sizes have gotten smaller compared to a year or two ago, the taste is still fantastic, and you are getting your moneys worth.
Hidden Jem.. Kimchi house is quite hidden, so it's not very known. My friend took me there a year back and I fell in love with their food. The prices are considered much cheaper considered to other Korean places.
Wow! What a hidden gem! Don't be fooled by the food court, this is best korean food I've ever had. The prices are dirt cheap compared to Edmonton. The quality of the food was definitely NOT food court quality. The service was great! I was going to order the regular Bi bim bap but he suggested I get the Stone bowl bi bim bap. It was simply amazing to the last bite.
One of the best Korean restaurants in town. Love it! They yukejang is one of the best I've had. And the kalbi is awesome. They don't put as many fish cakes in their dukboki anymore but it's still pretty ok considering u Can't usually order it at any other restaurants.
This place is awesome one of my favorite places to go to during lunch. I work right around the corner and have almost tried every dish. Sometimes it can get quite busy and takes a while for the food to come out but its well worth the wait!
Wonderful. Just had the Bi Bim Bap from this little tucked away place. So yummy! It came in the hot rock bowl, the flavours were amazing. It was served with a fried egg on top and sides of kim chi and extra sprouts. Just hit the spot.
I was looking for it on the street (a recently relocated Aussie) but I found it in City Plaza. The guys next to me were having something that looked very interesting and they got to cook it at their table.
I'll be going back for sure.
Cheap treat. I eat here very often as I work just around the corner. Very filling, lot's of nice korean garnish (kimchi and sprouts) haven't hit a bad dish yet. They serve you at the table. Yup very nice.
Don't let the look of a fast food court turn you off because after you have ordered and paid, the food will be delivered to your table with cuttlery and knapkins. The food is amazing for the price which is very affordable And the barley tea is bottomless and included with your meal as is kimchi and marinated bean sprouts.
My new place of employment is located in the heart of the downtown core. A quick jaunt away is Chinatown. I wanted something hot and filling, and Kim Chi House looked like a good option. I ordered the beef short rib special with stir-fried beef, rice, miso soup, and marinated sprouts ($8.50). I helped myself to complimentary barley tea, which I found a warming, comforting drink. The miso soup was salty and lukewarm. The ribs were tender but fatty. I liked the stir-fried beef the most, as it was saucy and a touch sweet. The rice was perfectly steamed, each grain was separate and firm. The sprouts were cold and crunchy, and a sizable portion. Overall, I enjoyed my lunch. The food is filling and tasty. I’d return again, though perhaps next time, I would venture for the stone bowls or soups.
Firstly, can I say, holla glass noodles! This was the first time I’ve tried them and considering they’re transparent, Jumping Cow Angels can they hold flavour. I like them, I like them!

The menu is small but straight-forward, and it cooks up what I think is the best bibimbap ($7.95) in the city.
