Location is great. Very accessible by city bus. Parking may not be very easy mostly during peak hours (evening of weekends). It's not a cheap place but it's worth it. They have many choices even for vegetarians. I think it's the best in town.
The best place on earth. The owner is so friendly and the food is amazing.
Great place to chill after a long night of drinking ! Awesome staff and I love the old school cartoons great little gem in Kensington! πππππ
First time at this location and it was great! We will go back for another Ho Down! It's on the menu I swear!
Comfort food at its finest at all times of the day and night!!! The slushies are real fruit too and tasty!! <3
Took my 15 year old son there for "brunch" on a Sunday at noon. Food was great...loved the huge pickles and pickled eggs for $1 each too! Banana shake was very good and priced right for the size. Service was friendly and place was nice and clean. See ya again soon on a Sunday for sure.
I go here all the time with my girlfriend and today we got a veagan poutine and its soooo good. All of there poutines are amazing will eventually try them all!
So hard to decide what to order when there are so many unique items that force your mouth to water. Ended up ordering the hogzilla poutine with a side of pickled eggs and pickles. The poutine is super filling for a reasonable price. The pulled pork was super tender, and the bacon was obviously the perfect addition! I love the casual atmosphere of the place; great for meeting up with friends, family, or even a date. Definitely put this on your list of places to eat in Calgary!
We decided to try this place for the first time last night, and we were very pleased. Service was very friendly and the cashier helped us pick a good poutine from the large selection. The place is small but it's cute and retro themed. Ordered the Taco Luchador and it was great...the sour cream, guacamole, cheese, etc. but next time ill order a small not large because it was way too much! Will be back again to try other poutines!
Huge portion!!. I happened to be running in Calgary. I had a craving for poutine, I have tried the New York Fries version, not impressed. I noticed this place while driving through. I had the large Authentic. It was almost too much for me. This would be the right size for 2 people. I even had a pop shop orange pop. I have not seen pop shop since I left Ontario around 25 years ago. Overall I found it pretty good, it did satisfy my craving for the next few months. I would visit here again.
Ok, weve passed this place many times but we were always in a hurry doing other things. We finally tried it today and it was Sooo good!!! I had the special Maple Poutine & my partner had the Notorious Pig. OMG the best poutine ever!!! Its very fresh & you can hear them chopping potatoes at the back. Its not a 5 star pretty pretty restaurant but the food is great. I will be back to try more. Yum!!
Great atmosphere and extremely pleasant and helpful when trying to decide what to order on the menu.. I have been several times and will continue to go back the food is delicious and the service is exceptional!!!
First time to this place with my wife and baby it's great it reminded me of home in Ontario but the only thing u can say is its a bit on the salty side over all it's a good deal and nice refreshing take on a classic poutine
As a vegan, I was really surprised that they had vegan alternatives for me! So my sister and I got the vegan nachos and loaded veggie poutines, which were delicious! But beware, the price will about double for the vegan alternatives! Our bill came close to $29 (for the normal, it would've been ~$16) Still, really good food + service!
It's awesome and the owners are nice.. I just moved nearby in Kensington and have been here several times over the last month and it's always delicious.
I've met the owners and seen them different occasions and they're cool dudes, too!
We came across this little gem on a walk through Kensington and it will now be a regular destination! The food was amazing, I had the perogee poutine and it is my new favorite! Hot and made to order and I was not charged extra when I requested bacon bits on it. My son had the Notorious PIG and declared it the best! The staff are all super friendly and the kitchen staff all seemed like they were having fun while putting great food out. It is clear that everyone loves to work here. It has a funky ambiance without being pretentious and was just an allover terrific experience! I highly recommend you check it out, you will thank me!!
First time there and not only was the poutine to die for, but the service was so warm!! Fanominal customer sevice; will be returning soon!
It's poutine.. Seriously, this place sells a bunch of varieties of poutine. It's inexpensive and well executed. Oh, and they have Gelato. 'Nuff said.
The Big Cheese has earned another regular.. The Big Cheese is a perfect and fitting addition to the kensington area, and being open late, it's a great place for people to go when they're just not ready to pack it in for the night. But all around, the food and service are top shelf with reasonable prices for the amount you get. I've tried a few items so far, the Notorious PIG, Hogzilla, Scottish Curry, Traditional and Dessert and have been impressed by all of them, hot, fresh and bursting with big cheesey goodness. They're usually prepared and served very fast, and you can see everything going into them in the kitchen behind the counter, so there's no secrets. The staff is incredibly friendly and helpful and make a point to make the customers feel comfortable and welcome. This restaurant continues to impress every time I return.
Bending over backwards for me!. Let me preface this review by saying that I am on a diet called "Keto". Pretty much, I can only have carbs in tiny amounts each day, and I try my best to keep my carb counts low. Your body begins burning fat for energy instead of converting carbs into sugars for energy, and long story short, I've lost almost 60 pounds since January. But that's not the point of this review.
I went to the Big Cheese after a concert, and even though it was their second day open and their debit machine hadn't even shipped yet, the place was packed. I'm talking 10 PM on what I believe was a Thursday night. Some of the people who were at the show had invited me, mostly just to hang out, because being on a low carb diet, one can't really eat poutine.
I walk in, and the three owners are at the order desk greeting people. Very cool atmosphere from the moment you walk in. I'm checking out the menu, when one of the owners asks me if I have any questions about the menu. I say:
"So, poutine is awesome, but I'm low carb and can't really have it. Mostly just checking out what's here and hanging out for a bit."
"Let me draft something up. I can do something that'll work for you. What are your restrictions?"
"Well, as much as I want to have them, fries and traditional gravy are pretty much off the menu. Yeah, that pretty much eliminates poutine right there."
"Well, for one thing we have a gluten-free gravy which could work. Let me draw something up"
He spent 5 minutes going over the menu and hand choosing what he thought would not only stick to the diet, but would also taste great.
I ended up getting a poutine served over onions, peppers, and mushrooms, with the same gluten-free gravy, piled with bacon, smoked pork, and cheese. Which, yes, is still on the diet, with maybe a few carbs tucked in between.
These guys literally bent over backwards so that I would feel welcome here. I'm definitely going again when I'm on a cheat day. They have my business for life (well, in moderation) after doing that.

PS, if you're on the fence about this place, a good comparison is "The Tubby Dog of Poutine". There is nothing they won't put on top of fries.
The big cheese is freaking amazing. Awesome staff and scrumptious food.
Coming back for the great people and choices of selection!. Never been to the Big Cheese franchise before, but I really wanted to try their selections of food. That being said, I finally walked into the Kensington one ordering two small poutines hoping to enjoy and finish them.
So then, what did I get? I decided to get the Perogie Poutine, because perogies are amazing! I also got the Mac and Cheese Poutine since it was being advertised on their sandwich sign. I shall explain the details chronologically from what I liked the least to what I liked the most.
First thing I noticed was that the ingredient names followed by the word "poutine" doesn't mean that the base is made from those ingredients. Instead they were the toppings. It was a little disappointing because I was hoping for a bed full of perogies covered in gravy and cheese. The perogie poutine was probably my least favorite. While the individual flavors were good, eating everything together was a little overbearing and confusing with the hearty poutine and the very sharp sour cream. Also there were only two small pieces of perogies... Therefore, unfortunately I was unable to finish the poutine.
The Mac and Cheese one was surprisingly good. The pasta was perfectly al dente despite being covered by hot gravy. An extra cheesy dish, definitely a must try!
I think the best thing in these poutines however were the poutines themselves! Fries were perfectly cooked with plenty of cheese and piping hot and salty gravy. Done to perfection! Really eating just one small poutine here is enough to fill you up good, or at least keep you satisfied with you wanting more the next time.
Certainly this salty-serving-food place definitely has a sweet atmosphere, and the cherry on the top was definitely the service. These people are very attentive and are willing to make sure that not only are you enjoying your food, but also enjoying your time. I already gave them my feedback and they listened intently on what I had to say.
I will most likely come back here trying other toppings that will hopefully work perfectly with the poutine they make. More importantly, I would love to see the smiles coming back here!
I'll be back. The person working at the till was very nice when I came in on a Monday afternoon. He took my order and I said it was to go, he asked if I'd like cutlery and told me that he'd bring my order out when it was ready and said I could take a seat. The place is clean, comfy, etc. If it wasn't so nice outside I'd probably have stayed.
While I was there two other customers that ordered before me got their meals and before I left I saw that the guy at the counter asked how they were doing and if they were enjoying their food. I love it when people that work in restaurants do this. How else could they know if they are doing a good job or not? When they ask it shows they actually care about what they are making, even if it is "just" fries and gravy.
Two other customers came in and the guy at the counter asked if it was their first time. He guided them through the menu, awesome customer service.
Ok, so yeah, It's not "REAL" poutine, but really, there are a number of people that just love fries, cheese and gravy. They will love this. I mean come on, we've all had pizza that isn't authentic Italian pizza, but it can still be really good.
I was served quickly, food was made in a jiffy, it was really good and all of this is crucial if you are going to pay almost $7 for a small of the most basic thing on the menu. However, the prices are on par with other poutine places I have been to, Montreal, Edmonton, and few others. I would go back though as the service was stellar and the $7 was worth it.
Visited Big Cheese for the first time today... delicious! With so many creative options, it was hard to decide where to start. We went for an Authentic traditional as well as a Mac n' cheese & both exceeded our exectations! We were also pleasantly surprised when the staff brought our kids stickers and asked them to try out a new gelato flavor for their opinion! Tasty food & great staff made for a very pleasant lunch... we'll definitely be back!
