I have made this my new go-to spot for fantastic tacos and horchata! Very authentic, make sure you ask for spicy! The owner is very friendly and makes the experience just that much better. Go support this mom-and-pop place!
We drove all the way from saskatoon to calgary and we always make sure this is our first stop before we do anything 5/5 cant be beat. The prices are extremely reasonable as well
Super delicious and authentic. The flavours were full and you can have your option or mild, medium or spicy.
Will definitely need to go back are they more things.
The Barbacoa were fantastic!
Okay, the decor leaves much to be desired, they don’t serve booze. But , if you want the real deal, and the best price in tacos, without feeling like the restaurant is doing you a favour then this is the place to indulge in your Mexican tooth!
Have a hankering for late night eats? Don’t want to default to McDonald’s? There are options! Such as Charrito Mexican Taqueria. No frills here, with a cafeteria look, this restaurant strictly sticks to serving up authentic Mexican. Sit in to catch some football on tv, but your best bet is for takeout.
I’ve been to El Charrito Taqueria a few times and not sure why it has taken me so long to write a review.
This is a mom and pop shop that offers unbelievable value for tacos. Tacos are $2.25 each EVERY DAY – no more waiting for Taco Tuesdays cuz every day is Taco Day now. Meat choices for your tacos are steak, pork, chicken, shredded beef, beef tongue and chorizo. They also have Barbacoa Tacos for $3.45 each, which are shredded beef (no choice of meat) served in two 6” corn tortillas that are fried (crispy).
On the weekends, they offer menudo soup – tripe in red chili pepper base soup $12.50. I thought it was a bit bland (not sure if that’s how it is supposed to taste) and would not order it again.
Otherwise, you can’t go wrong with their tacos - especially at those prices!
This place is a staple for me. It's really heartwarming to see their are still small Mom and Pop places around putting out such affordable, homemade food.Easily in my top three favourite places to get tacos in the city, and when you look at the price, I'd choose them 8 times out of ten. Stand outs are the Horchata, beef lounge Taos, and the Chile Roleno.
This mom and pop's taco joint will not disappoint. Tacos are priced at an unreal $2.75. Choose from the standard chicken, beef, pork, or get beef tongue (recommended). The latter was incredibly tender. I preferred the balance of the beef tongue taco compared to the burrito because the taco had peppers and lime to cut the savory/creamy notes. Do not miss the horchata, a refreshing drink made in house from rice milk and cinnamon; it was unreal.
Alright, let's start here. This place serves some amazing food. 6.75 for a burrito that will blow your mind is a deal any of of the week. 2.25 tacos, with amazing meats and made with love are just the icing on the cake. You cannot go wrong with anything on the menue.
The device here for being a family owned place is amazing they make you feel like home and really put a lot of pride in their meals. You can grab a variety of imported ingredients, spices, hot sauce, and beverages here to complete your experience.
You are more than likely to be serenaded with Latin music for your ears and some amazing smells and tatses for your other senses. 5/5 will be back..... Soon!
Tacos... Barbacoa 9/10; terrific! Chorizo 8/10; excellent! Al Pastor, Refried Beans, Rice 4/10 BLAND. Worth returning for the Barbacoa! Interesting atmosphere. Lady who took my order was holding a small child the entire time I was there. Wasn't busy.
Have had some hit and miss experiences here, but what I learned is that if you want flavour, ask for real spicy. Love the tacos, and the burritos. The owners are always super friendly. Will keep coming back, especially after a night at Fiddlers across the street
This place makes the spiciest tacos in the city, honestly feels like you're eating right in Mexico! The only place I will eat Mexican! Fantastic place
Had the chorizo, tongue, and shredded beef tacos. All super tasty and flavourful! And for the price can't be beat! I find the meats tender and juicy. Better than the meat offerings at native tongues (which only gives you one tortilla). We also tried the barbosa crispy taco, those were ok. Definitely worth checking out.
If you are looking for some authentic Mexican food, this is the place to be. Truly brings you back to Mexico. PLUS they sell Valentina at a fair price. I love this place.
Really like the tacos here and they have good pozole! I wish it came with all of the mix ins that are standard in Mexico but maybe that's due to local availability. They have good food though and reasonable prices!
I'm so glad this is in my neighbourhood. the food is simple yet fresh. The ingredients are flavourful and the portions are generous. I love that the tacos have 2 shells or so to say but they are still so soft. The price can't be beat! I look forward to being a regular here!
I love Mexican food. Authentic and spicy Mexican food. This place is as close as I found so far from what I'm looking for. The guy at the cash register speaks Spanish and telemundo is always playing on the TV (Yes that makes a difference to me). I've had everything on the menu and it's all been pretty decent and consistent. The food is spicy and the meats are moist. They also have tongue tacos so you know this place is legit! I think this place is a tad overpriced being a dive Mexican shop but I still would suggest checking it out.
Came here with a friend for some after work early dinner. Hole in the wall kind of place, I can see how it might be difficult to find parking at certain times of day. Cafeteria style vibe. Pretty good choices, and great prices. I had the beef tongue burrito and overall it was pretty good. Held together until just the very end, when it was knife and fork time. My friend had the tacos and adored them. Would absolutely return. Some of the best priced real mexican food in the city!
I stopped by with some co-workers for lunch. I've been to the Kensington location and was pleased so I had high hopes for here. It didn't disappoint! Service was a little slower then expected and we were the only ones there for a bit. But the food was great. I got 3 tacos: one pork and two steak. All 3 were delicious, the meat was tender and juice and the salsa was lovely. I topped it off with a nice glass of horchata and managed to introduce my co-workers to it as well. They both loved their meals and we got an order of chips with guac and salsa. The order of chips is massive. It's definitely meant to be shared among 2-3 people. Overall we left very full and very satisfied.
Gluten Free Friendly!. The owner was extremely knowledgable about what was gluten free on the menu. He took the time to explain each dish and I was very comfortable in my order. The chips are made in-house and are fantastic! The shredded beef tacos are full of flavour. It is a great late night snack that is cheap, delicious and gluten free!
Best Mexican tacos in Calgary! Bar none I am never dissapointed coming here. I have been to Mexico a few times and have never been able to find a place in Calgary that comes close until I found this place. Always feel welcome here and service is fast. I highly recommend this place if your a fan of Mexican food
Great Genuine Food - Can't go Wrong!. Great fresh food, absolutely simple and delicious. Not a fancy joint. We went for an office lunch, very casual, but if you want good mexican, this is the place. I had beef tongue tacos for the first time, and they were melt in the mouth good...the enchiladas were amazing. Not crazy about the mexican rice, but the refried beans are spot on.
My favourite Mexican in Calgary. My friends and I stop here a few times a month when I'm in Calgary. It is the closest to authentic Mexican that I have found in Calgary. I usually go for the tacos, but the burritos are great too. The salsa is fresh and has a great flavour. To top it off, the owners are super friendly and make an effort to connect with their guests! Love this place!
P.S. If you think it is expensive, then you have never eaten Mexican in the UK ! Tacos are insanely expensive here and not like the real thing. If you want cheap prices for authentic Mexican, then you'll have to go to Mexico!
Awesome tacos, friendly, ultra-casual atmosphere. The owners and other staff here are always so friendly and cheerful, and take a minute to say hi like you're an old friend, and the tacos are great. Authentic and simple. It is true that the tamales are a bit disappointing, but go for the tacos! I also like the burritos, which are simple and filling and make a nice quick take out meal (or snack...). Especially after a few drinks, a plate of tacos and a Mexican pop while watching Spanish TV is just right. Good, unpretentious and real Mexican fast food.
TACOS. AWESOME.
Fantastic!! Loved the Tacos!! I've visited Mexico quite often, and lived in Arizona for 10 years... This place Rocks! Thank-you Thank-you Thank-you for coming to Calgary! :D
Great Mexican food! So good, I regret not ordering anything to go for a late night snack. I'm not a fan of spicy foods but decided to try some spicey tacos and savoured every last bite!
Authentic food, fun atmosphere. I have gone to this authentic Mexican Restaurant several times, and each time am always satisfied and tastefully full of this delicious food! On Sundays I like to pick up the Pozole, it is nutritious, little spicy, filling and can be shared between 2 people. When you are sick or coming down with a cold this is a great remedy! You know what you are eating there, is made fresh and makes you feel great! Muchas gracias!!!
Authentic & Delicious!!!. I have been eating here almost every weekend since they opened. I missed this weekend because I was sick and cannot stop craving it - hence why I am on this site to check the weekday hours.
This food is AMAZING and not just the tacos (although they are my favorite)! I also get the chili relleno regularly if I stop in before lunchtime. This food is very authentic, so if you are looking for Tex-Mex (like every other place in Calgary) you won't find it here. The hot sauce is hot, which I appreciate since it is hard to find good (and actually hot) hot sauce in Calgary, but there are very tasty medium and mild sauces available as well.
My boyfriend is not a fan, but he is also not a fan of Mexican food in Mexico so this makes perfect sense. He also orders with no spice - none - so he does not get to experience the exquisite compilation of fresh ingredients the lovely owners have mastered and serve with unmatched hospitality.
If you love eating (off resort) in Mexico, you will love this place!!!
PS. The prices are Calgary prices. The owners have to pay the same cost of living as everyone else in Calgary, so don't expect Mexico prices. And the food is home made, so also don't expect fast food prices either:)
If You Don't Like This Place, There Is Something Wrong With You. My husband and I took the kids here today for the first time after hearing good things about it. It was awesome! Real, authentic Mexican food. My husband ordered the enchiladas, I ordered the barbacoa tacos, our daughter had pork tacos, we ordered beans to feed the baby and ordered chips and salsa as well. It was all delicious. If you are looking for delicious Mexican food that is quick and well priced, this is the place to go.
My wife and I have been patrons of El Charrito since it opened. Both Juan and his sister are amazingly friendly and the Tacos are pretty authentic and delicious ! We haven't tried many of the other menu items, as the friends that have describe them as average.
Stick with the Tacos and you won't be disappointed!! The best Tacos we've found outside of Sayulita's Taco el Ivan!!
The way Mexican food should taste. Stopped in on a whym and glad I did. Soooo tasty and cheap. Very happy they sell authentic ingredients as well.

+4.5
Fantastic and flavorful food. Have been there three times now and have been equally impressed with the sheer myriad of flavors in each bite. Excellent.
Yum. Authentic Mexican food! The staff were really friendly. Service was fast and the food fresh. This isn't Taco Bell. Homemade and prepared to order. We will be back!

I really liked this place. I was craving authentic Mexican food after my trip to Los cabos and found this place. I was very pleased it was delicious and took me back to Mexico. The cook even talked me into trying beef tongue and I suggest you try that too.. Delicious. It was a little pricey so not somthing do often but would definitely return
Best...Tacos...Ever. This place is great. The owners work behind the counter and they are super nice. The food is pretty good, stuff like the burritos and chile rellenos are as good as you'll get anywhere, and my girlfriend loves the quesadillas. The best dish that they have though is the tacos. I can't stop eating them. I eat here at least once a week and all I get is the tacos. And now they added something called barbacoa tacos...they are so good that I crave them constantly, I might be their biggest barbacoa taco consumer at this point. Stop what you're doing and go eat their barbacoa tacos right now.
Great food and price! Friendly people.
I live less than a block from El Charrito. I often find myself heavily craving their delicious and wholesome tacos. I often visit Mexico on vacation and this little gem does a great job of reminding me of why I enjoy Mexican food so much. I specifically recommend the soft tacos!
MUY BEIN. Yes it's that good and simple I actually looked up a Spanish word.
The owners work the place they are very pleasant and really care about the food quality.
They need a updated menu and they close at 9:00 pm not 10:00 pm as some information shows
Fresh, Delicious, Authentic. It's not very often I get a few minutes to grab a lunch that I want where I don't have to worry about little people not liking what we are eating. Finding myself kid free I made today all about me and stopped into El Charrito Taqueria to grab a bite to eat on the way home.
I don't have a large appetite but did order 3 tacos (2 chicken, 1 pork) and a delicious grape Sangria Senorial beverage. They asked if I wanted my tacos medium or hot and for the first time I thought I would stick with medium since I didn't know what their heat scale was like. Next time I will order hot.
They were delicious, fresh, authentic and very well priced (under $10 lunch). A great find hidden away on Edmonton Trail...I can see why John Gilchrist gave it an 8.5/10
I would agree that the pricing isn't "Mexican", but hey, news flash,... we are in Calgary. They source all their meat and produce here, like the rest of us, and everything else they make by hand inside the restaurant (ie. tortillas, breads, cheese, sauces, etc..). Owner operated, and they are very nice people.
I've recently returned to Canada after 10 years in Mexico and I can tell you that this place is authentic Mexican. If you don't like the food here it's because you don't like Mexican food. Don't feel bad. Some people like Coke, others like Pepsi. Different strokes for different folks.
One of the best Mexican places in town.. I am always on the lookout for great Mexican food and this is one of the best places in Calgary so far. The seasoning is authentic and delicious - the staff very polite and courteous - and bottom line the food is yummy. The tamales are cooked just right and the chicken tacos come in a double tortilla. I will be returning for more.
Great Mexican Fast Food. We have been there a few times, excellent food, quite fast. It is authentic food in both its appearance and flavour. If you want it hot, just ask. They have habanero salsa that is just killer (most Canadians wont be able to handle it). The owners are very nice. If you are looking for Taco Time/Taco Bell type food or Spanish type food the large chain restaurants serve, dont bother as you wont get that. It is just genuine good Mexican food, the real deal and designed to be prepared quickly so you can be on your way.
Ate here today (Sunday) for dinner at 8pm. We had chile rillenos, shredded beef enchiladas, a chicken taco and a beef tongue taco. They asked us if we liked our tacos mild, medium or spicy. We asked for medium. But next time, we'd get spicy because medium was weak. The tacos shells weren't the freshest BUT they were good nonetheless, just a tad crunchy on the edges. The taco fillings were good. We really liked the chile rellenos though. I thought the enchiladas were just ok but my dining partner liked it. We ordered guacamole and ate it on everything. It's not the best mexican we've had but the location is convenient for us and pretty decent for Calgary. We'd go back for sure. Go and try for yourself. Definitely get guacamole & chile rellenos though!
Stopped by to grab some take-out at lunch. Wonderful hardworking couple running the place, tasty food! Can't wait to try the other things on their menu. Living in the area, its nice to have a simple and quaint Mexican joint so close.
Amazing mexican food & wonderful service at El Charrito Taqueria. Hands down El Charrito Taqueria is the best authentic mexican taco place I've been to in Calgary. I will be back, over and over again. Great prices, great service & amazing food. I can't say enough good things about this place.
I highly recommend the Al Pastor and the Lengua.
These are the best authentic Mexican tacos in Calgary. They are affordable and made in front of you. Plus they double up on the tortillas, so you know they're gonna be good. They even have guava Jarritos! No need to distract you with $10 jugs of daiquiris or sombreros on the wall. Just good tacos.
Great tacos, uneven value.. Made the trek to El Charrito last night for dinner and had a pretty damn good experience. Restaurant is beside DIner Delux in a building split with Prime Tandoori Pizza; small signs adorn the outside windows and door to let you know that you're in the right place. Decor, although objectively bad, is absolutely perfect for this type of restaurant. This place looks exactly like an establishment serving authentic tacos should.
We were greeted warmly by the husband of the husband/wife team that owns and operates this place while their young boy bounced around in the background. Although we were the only ones ordering to stay it looked like they were doing fairly decent take out business which is nice to see for a new establishment.
We decided on the tamales, served with rice, beans, and two types of salas and one of each of the five kind of tacos (shredded beef, steak, pork, chicken, and beef tongue). To drink we ordered two horchata (a milk, rice, and cinnamon based beverage). We were asked whether we wanted the tacos mild, medium, or spicy and, of course, went for spicy. It seems like this choice determines the type of salsa served on the tacos; we had a spicy red salsa whereas there was also a milder tomatillo variety that we didn't try.
The tamales were okay, but ultimately forgettable. Oddly enough the side of beans were the highlight of the tamale dish; garlicky and salty they were the first thing to be completely devoured. At almost 14$ the tamales were just too poor of a value to recommend, especially considering what excellent value the tacos represent.
As far the tacos are concerned these are definitely the best I've had to date in Calgary. The corn tortillas were soft and fresh, each taco wrapped with two in true authentic fashion. Although each of the meat selections were good, the pork and tongue definitely stood out from the others as exceptionally delicious. The tongue was tender and perfectly braised while the pork had a nice crispy exterior and sweet pieces of grilled pineapple. Although I could have handled more heat, the red salsa had a pretty respectable spicy kick and great flavour. Next time I'd like to try some of my tacos medium to try out the tomatillo salsa too. My only complaint about the tacos is that they could have used an additional creamy sauce (the creamy Mexican cilantro salsa springs to mind) to balance out the mostly sharp flavours of the onion, cilantro, and red salsa.
The horchata seemed homemade and was creamy with just the right amount of spice and paired perfectly with the fresh and sharp taco flavour.
Highly recommend this place for a great taco in Calgary.
The tacos were by far the best thing on the menu. Legit Mexican style
Authentic Mexican Food. My family travels to Mexico at least once a year and we love Mexican food, so imagine our delight as to discovering El Charitto! The tacos were truly authentic, fresh and made to preference. I highly recommend this little gem to anyone that is searching for excellent, true Mexican cooking. The staff was so friendly and welcoming and the whole place was very clean. I had taco's - one pollo, one asada and one al pastor. They were delicious and reasonably priced ($2.25 each). I can't wait to try the enchiladas and the chile relleno! Go - you won't be disappointed.
Only Authentic Mexican In Calgary. Great authentic Mexican food. Family owned.
I had 3 tacos (chicken, pork, shredded beef) - chicken is a little bland, other meats are amazing.
Rice - decent
Sweet Mexican Water (Horchata) - this is like a cinnamon bun in liquid form, very addictive and taste great.
Drove by this place when looking for a place to eat and decided to try it. If you are looking for authentic Mexican food, I cannot recommend this place enough. Tried the tacos, burrito and the tamales, all of which were excellent. Don't miss out on the sweet cornbread desert.
Muy Bien. Update: June 17, 2013: Just went for tacos, the barbacoa beef was very good, lightly fried, a cross between a soft and hard taco. My wife's veggie burrito was good, but she would not share. The food and atmosphere seem improved, I will now be a regular. The owner tolerates and encourages my abysmal spanish.
Good Mexican food seems so hard to find in Canada that I am reluctant to spend any more money for another bland imitation. This seems to be changing with places such as Las Tortillas, Paloma, and now, El Charrito. We tried the chicken enchiladas and a trio of tacos: steak, chicken, and pork. Great flavour depth, we will go back to try more dishes. A few things that could be improved, the chicken in the enchiladas was a little cold, and the portions were smaller than described by previous reviews, perhaps cost cutting. The place is a bit cafeteria like, so you would not want to go for an intimate (music too loud) meal.
Good Authentic. Sweet Mexican couple own and cook at this little joint. The Beef Tongue taco was all sorts of melt in your mouth flavorful deliciousness. Authentic mexican at good prices.
The real deal. Authentic, homemade tacos and pasole. Family-owned vibe, laid back and casual. On Foodie Row on Edm Trail, huge portions and good value. Worth checking out.
Just headed there and ordered a beef tongue taco and a chicken burito. It only costs $8.50 with good portion. The food are fresh and with bold flavor. It leaves you want for more. Why go to Taco Bell Taco Time when you can get authentic Mexican food for about the same price? You gotta eat here!
P.S. Their corn tortilla chips ($3/pack) and Fresh Salsa ($4.5/container) are to die for as well!
Fantastic authentic Mexican!
Just what the neighborhood needed. We've been waiting for a place like this. Fresh food, great service. We have been there probably 8 times since it opened and it never disappoints.
An explosion of flavours!!. This is an amazing place for authentic Mexican food. I ordered beef tacos and a chicken burrito and the food was absolutely delicious. Your taste buds will do the tango and the salsa!! The freshness of the ingredients is what defines this place. This is home made Mexican food served fresh at a very reasonable price. My bill was just $11.00. I would highly recommend this place to any foodies out there.
Reminded me of being back in California! I will be back here often. We had the Asada tacos and burritos, both were delicious!
Excellent service and authentic Mexican food. Spicy and delicious. Big on taste, small on price.
Awesome, authentic tacos. Checked El Charrito out today on a whim, because I love Mexico and miss great, simple Mexican food.
Spoke to the owner, a very nice lady who just opened shop last week. Tried a beef and chicken taco. They were awesome, authentic tacitos that you find all over mexico. Made with fresh tortillas, cilantro, and salsas. I was very happy.
The place itself needs some serious decoration as it looks quite ghetto. But hopefully they do well and over time will invest in making the decor nicer.
We frequently drive past the brunch spots on Edmonton Trial and are turned off by the idea of waiting an hour for something we can make at home, but that's just us. One Sunday, we decided to stop off at El Charritos Taqueria for lunch, located between two popular brunch spots. Inside we found delicious authentic Mexican food, at good prices in a simple but functional setting. Darrin tried the Jarritos Lime soda that was refreshing and sweetened with cane sugar instead of usual corn syrup found in most North American soft drinks. This gave it a more complex and more satisfying sweetness. We ordered 4 tacos- beef tongue, chicken, chorizo and shredded beef. The tacos were fresh with the flavours of onion, cilantro and spices. Our definite favourite was the beef tongue, which was tender and very flavourful. You also get the choice of ordering the tacos mild or sp
