Don't let the humble interior fool you: Rainbow Bakery is definitely one of Calgary's better Chinese bakeries. They always have a wide variety of desserts, which are all very, very affordably priced. I decided to try egg tarts (蛋挞, 3 for $2.00), wife cakes (老婆餅, 3 for $2.00) and a cocktail bun (雞尾包, $1.40 each). The pastry on the egg tarts wasn't quite as flaky as what I'm used to, but the filling had a really nice flavour (and really, egg tarts that have been sitting in a bakery will never be as good as those that are fresh at dim sum). The wife cakes were really, really nice: very sweet with little morsels of candied winter melon and coconut all encased in flaky puff pastry. The cocktail bun, however, was definitely the highlight (and one of the better ones I've had in a while): the coconut filling was generous and absolutely delicious, and there was a perfect ratio of filling-to-bun. I'll definitely be back!
Rainbow Bakery Calgary is hands down one of my favourite Chinese bakery in Chinatown. It's located inside Dragon City Mall in Chinatown, and they’re usually open the whole week (except Mondays). The store itself is quite messy, unkempt and probably not as clean as other bakeries. Their pastries are tasty and its pretty cheap. My favourite here are their wife cakes ($2/3 pieces), which are chewy and sweet, perfect with tea. However, beware: CASH ONLY!
Came here after picking up some bubble tea from Pearl House directly across. I was craving a baked good and notice they had egg tarts. Ordered 3 and the owner pointed to a sign that said "20% off orders after 5pm". It was 530pm so it came to $1/egg tart! Yay! We got our egg tart from the owner...
Best asian bakery. It reminds me of the asian bakeries in Vancouver. The ones in Vancouver is cheaper, but this one is still good. Only a couple cents or a dollar more expensive in this one though.
The tuna bun and the bbq bun are amazing.
Yummy. Stars

Cheap prices and really yummy food! And super awesome service for being in China town! I went in and they had not made red bean ball's yet and the gentle man there went right to the back and made them fresh for me on the spot! That was awesome of them and one of the reasons I am a big fan!
Great. This is my go-to Chinese bun bakery. I like the coconut buns, tuna buns, bbq pork buns, and sesame balls. The buns are about $1.30 each I think or 3 for $1.50 for the small ones, but are 20% off after 5pm in my experience.
Cash only.
Hubby and I was at the chinatown festival today and stopped by for a snack. Notables: sugary balls, egg tarts, and deep fried curry beef buns. The BBQ pork buns were so-so. The filling was a baby pink in colour - pink food colouring? Its a bit weird but tastes fine. I still prefer the ones at the forest lawn bakery. Will definitely come back.
After a long absence .... I used to frequent Rainbow Bakery many times years ago, but have stopped going (not sure why).
Went to the Dragon City Mall on Sat. after 5 pm and thought I'd try Rainbow again. Seeing that it was after 5 pm, I didn't expect the bakery to have much on hand. I was surprised to see they still had some buns for sale. Selection was limited though - understandable - but the ones that were remaining there were a good quantity left.
I picked up some mini cocktail buns (3 for $1.50), some kind of ham bun ($1.30), and my all time favourite of Rainbow, spam cheese bun ($1.30).
My only complaint from this bakery is that the woman packing the buns into the box used a small sized box so some of the buns were flattened/squished, hence I could not enjoy the fluffy airy presentation of the buns as it was meant.
The ham bun was ok, generous amount of filling without it being overly salty. The spam bun was just as I remembered it years ago, except that the spam was like the ham bun filling, not overly salty. The cheese is just a processed slice of cheese on the top.
Without question the cocktail bun was the star. In fact, in all of chinatown's bakery, Rainbow's cocktail bun has to be the best I've tried. Too bad all that was left was the mini bite sized cocktail buns. The filling was without equal, generous amount plus decent sized shredded coconut. Awesome !
All the buns had a nice soft texture to them, none of them were dense/heavy, and were baked well.
Overall, I probably wouldn't get the ham bun again, as it was my least favourite, but overall, good baked items.
The Hot Dog buns with Dressing :3. I have been disappointed with this bakery, but ONLY because my favorite bun is either sold out, or not in stock!
Aside from that, the staff is friendly, and they remember faces, so they could recognize you and make idle conversation, which I find really neat! The bread is 20% off after 5pm, so I would buy some after school before I go home! My favorite bun would be the Hot Dog bun with Dressing- it tastes so good! There's some sweetness from the bread, some saltiness from the sausage, and some creaminess from the dressing, creating a wonderful harmony of.. Wonderfulness...! Good prices (before 5pm, each bun is about $1.30) and fresh bread (every 10-15 minutes, they would restock with more fresh bread!) all day long~ A nice satisfying cheap lunch or snack! Will go again!
