Favorite place for "Chinese meats" their soy chicken with lai fun is my favorite. It's a good place for all times of the day, I've been there for breakfast, lunch, dinner and for late night food!
Never realized how much I loved this place until it closed for “renovations” a while back. The bbq rice combo is always consistent and I love the soup that comes with it. Came here for dinner lately and was overwhelmed by all the options available for dinner. Got the Thai style beef and shredded duck noodles. Even though both were extremely good we couldn’t finish it! Sad that I already had my meals planned for the next day so I had no dibs on the leftovers :(
I hadn’t eaten here in ages. Took 7 friends there and ordered a good variety of veggies, chicken, noodles, pork, rice and fish dishes. The menu is massive and even if you have a dietary restriction you’ll find something you love for sure. We had people who didn’t eat pork, soy or shellfish and everyone got to order dishes they could eat. The quality was high and the price was very reasonable ($28/head) for food and a beer. We were stuffed and had plenty of leftovers even.
Based on our experience, Sichuan spicy fish can be rated 4.5, very tasty. Fishy eggplant with ground pork is a good choice, too, I enjoyed having rice with its broth. Sichuan chicken was a bit different from what I thought but it’s ok. We got complimentary desert which is made by purple rice, very well prepared. I guess maybe because it was new year’s day?
Love this place for a quick lunch, da lang, or for take out bbq items. It can get extremely busy and crowded and parking can be a pain. Good lunch specials, soups and stir fried dishes. Part of the Taste of Asia chain including Misai, Calgary Court, Cafe 100, Teapot, Pebble Street and Forbidden City chain. If you like the baked pork chop on rice or spaghetti, try Calgary Court instead as I think its slightly better!
Lots of choices and quality food but expensive. It's also a bit on the slower end and you have to call your own waitress over to order. It's a great place for a midnight meal though because they open late!
This a great place to come for BBQ, Pork, Duck, Noodles, a buddy of mine who is Chinese took me here the first time a few years ago and we still come regularly as its close to work, I chuckled when I read a couple of reviews one mentioning that the place is grimy and the service is rude, which it certainly is, but the food is great and I will continue coming here, one of the few places I would tolerate rudeness, but the food is worth it.Last time I dropped by they were renovating, I hope they are re opening soon.
My family loves coming here and we've been coming for over 10 years. Food is always great. Service is a hit or miss, as with most Asian restaurants. Their BBQ dishes are amazing and I love the ginger beef and salt and pepper squid. Consistent good food.

I've been to this place numerous times and finally decided to leave a review. This is the best place in Calgary to get barbecue pork!!!!!!!!! I'm Chinese so I know cha siu! When I don't wanna cook I'd just go buy a pound of cha siu ( there's always a line by the BBQ section which u can just buy the BBQ meats) and make some rice at home. For those who don't know you can also choose between fattier meat or leaner meat. Their duck is not bad either but doesn't really stand out if comparing to their cha siu. Depending on if u go there for dinner or lunch, they offer quite a lot of varieties. But for dinner I have to say it's so so, not bad but not very good either. There are other much better choices for "real" Chinese dinner in the north. Lunch is always busy but I do not like their stir fry ho fan( stir fry beef with flat rice noodles). This dish is very popular among Chinese restaurants and isn't a super hard dish to make but theirs is jut strange as they use sweet soya sauce or sth. I didn't expect it to be sweet lol anyway if I go there for lunch I usually go with noodle with soup with BBQ pork haha. As u can tell BBQ pork is really the only reason I come here for.
This is the place i always get my bbq pork and bbq duck take out. Tonight decided to come here instead of cooking. I have been craving some congee so I order the lean pork and thousand year old egg congee. This is always my go to when I'm sick or just wants something to warm me up. It came in a hot bubbling clay pot. Flavourful and not too salt which was nice. We always order shanghai noodles and garlic & Onion beef in oyster sauce on hot plate. The noodles where saucy and seasoned well with lots of toppings. The beef hot plate came out sizzling and the beef was super tender. There was lots of onions and garlic and peppers. There was whole cloves of garlic in there, woah they could have chopped it up more. We left super full and happy. Look forward to next time.
We've been to this place so many times I can't remember. It's a mainstay. It's everything you want in a Chinese joint. Always packed. Slammed. Open late. Filthy cans. Rude service. But brilliant duck. Live fish tank. The carp is spot on. Greasy fried noodles that satisfy. And you get the real smell and feel of Hong Kong without having to leave home. Thumbs up.
It's good, I really appreciate this business and the hours they are open. Being a white person I don't find the service rude or abrupt. Some people need to realize that is a business that is ran by and catered to Chinese people and authentic Chinese BBQ and Hong Kong style flavours. They don't exist to serve you Ginger Beef with a smile and wink. Go in, be polite and don't try to alter their menu. Go up to the front when you want to pay and don't wait for your waiter to come to you with the bill.
Every time I visit Calgary, I make it my mission to eat here at least once. Their roast duck and char siu are hands down the best in Alberta. Nothing like it here in Edmonton. Soup noodles and combo platters are where its at. BBQ meats are about 15% more expensive than any other place, but its totally worth it. If you want to save some money, just go early in the morning when they open and just buy the BBQ meats to go and make your own rice/noodles at home.
only ordered 2 dishes everytime when I go there. Roast pork (skin is super crispy and meat is tasty). Duck is extremely good. Tastes even better overnight.
Come here for afternoon tea menu before 5pm, and you get a drink with your slightly smaller meal for under $9. Great value for an early dinner.
One of the best Chinese BBQ places in Calgary! Their duck is the best!!! No matter when I come here for lunch or dinner there's always a wide selection. Service could be a little better but the food is always great! I'd definitely recommend dining here :)
Again, this review might be a little biased, given my predisposition to craving Chinese food from time to time. Sun's is part of the Taste of Asia group, and it's menu reflects the typical Hong Kong style eatery cafes. What stands out about Sun though, is that they specialize in barbecued meats that you can either order for takeout or as part of some of the other dishes. I found their charsiu to be consistently tender and juicy, and appreciate how you are given the options of how fatty you would like your cuts of meat to be. Definitely one of my consistent places that I crave!
Let me start by saying I enjoy quite a few of the dishes here. I almost always order the spicy pork/green bean when I come here. Another favorite is the bbq pork. The major problem here is the washroom. If you think a gas station bathroom is bad, then you haven't been here. You must hold it or face a scene which may ruin your appetite
My family and I came here late at night at 10pm and this place usually closes pretty late. This would be a pro for the HANGRY people like me who has late night cravings (that's not fast food)... And is annoyed that all other restaurants close at 10.
Parking is plenty at night. And fairly easy to get a table at this time. I've been here during the day, and finding parking is nearly impossible.
We ordered the clams, seafood clear noodles, and oyster pancake. All of this comes with unlimited white congee (part of their late night menu). It was all pretty good. I definitely recommend the pancake, I could probably eat the whole thing myself! One complaint with the clams is I noticed some of the clams had no meat, but I'm sure it's nothing they could've done.
Fairly priced and service was nice and fast.
I do recommend using a washroom elsewhere.
100% authentic & delicious Chinese food! Pictured below are the spicy mussels, sweet and sour prawns, & BBQ short ribs. Just a few the the many choices in their extensive menu. The restaurant itself is very clean and you feel like you're in Chinatown.
A great place for a casual quick lunch. The BBQ combos are delicious and hit the spot. This place is always hopping and the tea is always hot. I've been here for dinner a number of times as well and never have been disappointed. Very convenient as well as it's right next to Lambda grocery.
They have increased the portion of my favor noodle soup. I stopped by around five oclock to get my late lunch snack. Havent been here for so long. The service they have actually gets better. Pretty friendly.
Late night supper dishes are good, I like it when sometimes the food has really strong "wok hay" it means the food is well cook/hot enough and perfectly stir fried. Dining room services improves a lot, one or two of the late night server are actually pretty nice which really seeing that they finally realized the biggest problem back in the day. Overall great!
While on the last stop, we decided to sit down for lunch as well before making the trek back home. Sun Chiu Kee BBQ is a Hong Kong style cafe, though they have a BBQ window and counter where people can order meat to take home. Their menu is probably a hundred items (or more!) long, and the restaurant is loud with chatter, matching the service which is casual and brisk. If the washroom is any indication, the kitchen is probably less than sanitary... but all of these elements combined are the hallmarks to good Chinese food, no? You definitely don't come to these sorts of places for the service or the ambiance; you only come here if you want good and greasy Chinese food done right.
This is my favorite place for Chinese BBQ. I love the roast duck the skin is so crispy and the meat is juicy. I also love the BBQ pork from here. There are always long lines for the BBQ.
It's a great place for lunch and afternoon snack. The HK style milk tea is really good and the food they serve is pretty decent. I always have a carb feast here.
I’ve been getting requests for my duck fried rice. So on Sunday, L and I made a stop off at Sun Chiu Kee BBQ. While I always have to wait in line to order, this time was particularly crazy. Sun’s BBQ meats are pretty close to the best of the best I can get in Richmond, BC. The duck has lots of meaty goodness, and not too much fat. I ordered a whole duck, which is about $26.00.
I always love going to suns for lunch, afternoon tea, dinner and late night snack. There was on period of time where I was there for late night snack almost every week. The portions are smaller and their prices are reasonable. I love the different dishes we can order and im a big savoury person so this is what i always crave.
They can get pretty busy here during the day and sometimes during the late night snack hours, but its worth the wait :)
A friend and I were looking to catch up with some late night food and being in Calgary, this limits our choices on where we can go. I had completely forgotten that Sun Chiu Kee opened so late on a daily basis, but it came up on the list of options when browsing through zomato with the ‘open now’ option selected. Turns out they open till 1am on weekdays!
The BEST hot and sour soup in the city. I've been looking for the my favourite hot and sour soup in Calgary and after numerous suggestions, this place tops the list. Next time, I'll order the BBQ meats as I've heard fantastic things about it. Plus it's open late on weekdays!
Definitely a must go place for Chinese food. It's always delicious, quick, and fairly decent service. They open late too which is a plus. It has a lively atmosphere and reminds me of Hong Kong. For Calgary, Sun's boasts a level of quality that many Chinese restaurants cannot compare to. Though it can be pricey and it's service is iffy sometimes, it still remains a hot spot, I would recommend this place!
my go-to place for some great sichuan food! they really don't hold back on the spice characteristic to the region's style of cuisine, and it's absolutely great. their menus are laid out nicely, and tell you which food will be on the spicier side.
my family mainly goes for the hotpots, but their other dinner items are good as well. their hotpots come with a complimentary tray of beef – no matter what kind of hotpot you've ordered. the beef is average in my opinion, but is good for a person that isn't too keen on the type of hotpot ordered. as a special note, their fish hotpot is very spicy, so you've come to a good place if that's what you've been looking for.

Suns BBQ lunch is a very good place for lunch and dinner. Their duck and rice combo is very tasty and good. Would recommend. Although it can get really busy during lunch hours it still worth.
Yes, poor service, bustling service... but good food.. I agree, most of the service here will be seen as rude and poor by most standards. I too, have rarely ever seen a smile on a waitress's face. It's a bustling, noisy, hong kong diner that's there to put Char Siu on the table for you... and that's fine with me. I'll be coming back time and time again for their handmade noodles and grilled pork chop noodle soup.
On a sunny Sunday morning, we waded into the crowds at Sun Chiu Kee BBQ Restaurant... it was packed...looked like a choreographed chaos inside the bistro/cafe sitting area where it was a frenzy of noise, food and busy efficient waitstaff running around. After a short wait, its onto the food!
Great spot for late night snack. This place has nice selection of small dishes just the right size for a midnight snack that calms the hunger pains but doesn't leave you too stuffed. If you order many dishes they even give you free congee. Yum.

Pricey. I'm usually only here for dinner or late night meals. The most recent visit was with family. We had fish maw soup, a tofu clay pot with mixed meats and a beef and garlic sizzling plate plus plain rice for 3 of us. The portions of food with the exception of the soup were small compared to other Chinese restaurants especially for the price. Plain rice was $2 a person. I did enjoy that the soup was less thick then then it usually is, but they didn't offer us the usual red vinegar to garnish it. The clay pot was alright and nothing special. I liked the sizzling plate beef with garlic as it had big chunks of red pepper and onion. Our tong sui was a mixed bean dessert instead of just red bean, which was a nice treat. Service was kind of absent after they took our order, but they refilled our tea pot regularly so I can't complain. I didn't find it rude, just absent, which is better then when they're abrupt and angry, right? It was packed when we got there and packed when we left so even with the service complaints they aren't hurting for business.
Excellent food Horrible service. The service is terrible here. The waitresses are very rude and act like they are doing you a favor. Most will ignore you if you want anything or they will do it but will give you attitude the whole time! But despite this I will still go back!! And yes they get a 4 still because of the food. It would have even been a 4.5 but I wasn’t able to.
The most hit place at night for food. Every time i come at night to eat here its always jam pack. Food is so good, however service was poor. I would come back just for the food though. Love eating their roasted pork and BBQ duck too.
Great food, weak service!. My friend and I was waiting to pick up my girlfriend at the Calgary Airport we decided to go to chinatown for real chinese food. We never made it downtown. I noticed this place on Center Street. As soon as we walk into the place, we knew the food would be good! Honestly, we wanted to run back out the door! I would say the place needs a major reno. All of our dishes were fantastic. My soup was perfect, so was my Rice dish. My friend had the Spring Rolls and the roasted Duck. I wish the servers were a little bit more friendly, we found them a little cold. I would probably come back here though, I don't think my friend would. I found all of the prices on the menu are very reasonable. I would give them a 4/5.

Good. A staple for Chinese Canadians. Been coming here for years. BBQ pork always good, good tea time specials, I like the siu gaow (fancy won tons) with lai fun noodles. They can make almost anything you want, chinese noodle/meat/vegetable wise. Just tell the waitress. I don't expect spectacular service, as with most Chinese fast food places.
The best Chinese food I've had in the whole wide world.. The world is defined as... Vancouver, Toronto, Montreal, Calgary, Edmonton and Hong Kong.

Everything that touches that wok just ends up tasting out of this world on my plate. Even dishes that I normally hate I turn out loving it here. I make sure I eat at this place every time I go to Calgary. The service is mediocre and I have to wait 15-20 minutes every time and it's a few dollars more expensive than normal Chinese food in Canada - but it's alright.
I've had wonton noodle, baked seafood on rice, young chow fried rice, singapore noodles, tofu with duck egg yolk, bbq pork, and the list goes on...
Just order anything and I guarantee it'll be good.
Good 'ol homestyle Chinese cooking. Even at 2pm this place was packed to the brim! Their BBQ pork and duck combo was delicious and the food came out relatively quickly. Many of the dishes around me looked like things I'd like to try.
Service was okay. The wait to be seated was long. Cleanliness of the restaurant is questionable. But the food and value make up for all these shortcomings.
Asian food in Good Portions. If you like Asian food, this is one of the spots to visits. Very authentic - cantonese style cooking and etc.
Food portion is huge, its best to share amongst family and friends..try not to over order... and you will have to ask for a serving spoon.

Best canton style food in Calgary. All diah are good, can really go wrong.
Great Food. This is my favourite Chinese restaurant in the city. If I am looking for bar-b-que duck I need to get there by mid afternoon or its gone. They have great lunch specials too. We try new dishes most every time we visit and have yet to be disappointed. This is the real thing.
The food here is pretty tasty. I enjoy going for their Tea Time Specials shown on the small menu sitting on the table, available from 2-5pm mon-sun. For between $6-$8 you get a drink and a snack sized plate of food or bowl of noodles. There is a mix of cuisine choices to choose from. They have things like pork chops with spaghetti, french toast, fried rice, and other Chinese specialties. The restaurant is not crowded during this time either which is a bonus, at lunch and dinner often you have to wait for a table. The food is always tasty, although some dishes are too oily for my liking.
They also have a late night snack menu (available after 9pm or 10pm?)
Old standby. I've been going there once a week after going to the gym for a while. The servers know our group well and the service is really good at 9:30 at night. Food is tasty and consistent. Oh and, if you ask, you might get some tong sui for dessert.
Busy Place, Neo-Chinese. This place is always hopping -- from the word "Go" to whenever they say "Stop" they are lively and hopping as the lobsters and shrimp in their tank. From a HK style cafe breakfast at 10:30am, to a wonton noodle bowl lunch at 2:30pm, to full sit down Chinese meal at 6:30pm, to a Chaozhou style "Xiuye" late meal at 12:30am, they are consistently good.
The flavours they create is truly pan-Asian, based on a strong Cantonese root based in Hong Kong. Then they sprout to Shanghainese, Northern, Fujianese, Thai and Southeast Asian flavours that makes their dishes sing. Traditional dishes like stir-fried vegetables with a crispy nest can be found with stir-fried beef with Thai chili-paste and Thai basil...it's a trip like no other, but get there fast, and if you're not be ready to be patient...it's one BUSY place!
Oh...and yes, BEST CHINESE BBQ IN TOWN. End of.
I read about the poor service at Sun’s, but honestly, I’ve never had a problem in the past, or on this occasion. Service is always efficient, despite the chaotic environment. Our server Lena was attentive, considering she had to deal with a restaurant full of customers, all vying for her attention. Photo Credit – Jennifer Lam Jen was craving the Sweet and Sour Pork with Pineapple and Mayonnaise Sauce ($12.50). To round out our snack we ordered a large order of rice ($4). The pork could have arrived hotter, but other than that, it was tasty. The pork was more sour than sweet, which we prefer. Next time around, I’ll ask the kitchen to omit the mayonnaise, as it didn’t do anything to the dish. The rice was fluffy and dry.
So, if you like duck (Peking style), do purchase a piece of one from here to try!
Chinese bistro style cooking is how I would describe the food at Sun Chiu Kee. Located conveniently in the Lamda Grocery store and open early till late, you could easily eat and shop after being inspired by the delicious Chinese dishes you just had. The food is offered from a number of different menus that vary by the time of day. At first ordering can be a bit of a challenge to the novice eater in particular trying to figure out which menu to order from. In the morning their breakfast menu incorporates many of the chinese staples including congee (rice porridge), and soy sauce fried noodles as well as many other tasty options all for a great price. For lunch noodles topped with the in-house made BBQ meats including pork, char-sui and roasted duck cannot be beat. Later on in the afternoon some cheap eats can be had until 5pm with an assortment of fri
