Another awesome dinner with all the amazing fixins' and on the new patio!!!
La comida irani es deliciosa!!! Iranian food is delicious!
I'll just make it simple, their service is bit slow but their food is fantastic!!
Going to Shiraz Restaurant is one of my keenest pleasures.
Shiraz is one of our favourite restaurants in Calgary. The food tastes exquisite, with fantastic aroma, and a right touch of Persian spices! Not only the atmosphere is great but the you are welcomed by a courteous host. Truly our family enjoys eating the delicious cuisine at and from Shiraz every time!
Great food ! Came here for NYE and had a great dinner
visited this gem for dinner last night purely by chance...AMAZING!!! this was our first time at a persian restaurant. every dish we had was a standout. service was excellent. wish it was on the south side of town but we will definitely be back. one of the best meals i have ever had.
Love this place. Definitely one of the best Persian places I have had. Their rice is good and the Kobideh is good. The chicken is okay but the Kobideh beats it. Worst thing abotu this place is their hours of operations, they aren`t always open and sometimes they close early.
First time visiting this restaurant and let me tell you, the experience was great. The food is amazing, the service was awesome, our waitress was very nice. Try the eggplant dip, the Humus and the salad. The food was great very taste and fresh. I definitely recommend to everybody The chicken and beef skewers with the zafron rice. I would come back to this place.
Meat on a stick, what's not to like? If you live in the north side of the city you probably drive by this place every other day. The decor is a little nondescript--a cross between Walmart and Home Depot--but the food is totally on point. All fresh, made with heart.
My first time trying Persian cuisine and I'd say it was enjoyable and I would return. The location is convenient and great for groups. The portions are really large here. I could only eat half of my chicken and beef kabob dish with saffron rice. The kids beef kabob with rice plate was huge for $10. The braised lamb shank with traditional rice was fantastic. The lamb was tender and flavorful. The traditional rice was a winner with the dill mixed in. The eggplant dip appetizer is a must try; even my toddler loved it. They are currently offering 50% off the second entree so it's a great deal with the economy and all.
We had the appetizer platter and it was very good. I also had the lamb shank and it was tender and juicy with lots of flavor. Service was quick and attentive. Probably one of the best Persian options in Calgary!
My boyfriend and I went this restaurant for supper and had the delicious pizza and garlic bread with sauce dip. I would send any of my family and friends there.
I don't know of any great Persian restaurants in the North, so Shiraz stands out by providing good quality grilled kabobs on a hefty bed of basmati saffron rice. Like any good Persian restaurant the meats are tender and juicy, dripping with flavour that goes well with huge amounts of rice.
The Vaziri seems to be the best bet if you want variety. It's one skewer of tender chicken breast pieces and one skewer of ground beef koobideh. It comes with a spicy version as well, but both dishes are on the higher end of the price scale on the menu at above $22.
The other items on the menu are great foundational Persian dishes like hummus or the tart Dolmeh (grape leaves stuffed with rice and spices). One stand out is the Kashk-e-Bademjan which is a warm eggplant spread topped with crunchy garlic and onions. Great flavour with great textures.
The Kashk-e-Bademjan comes as a pizza as well (this is maybe the only Persian spot in Calgary I know that serves Pizza), which is a unique topping for a pizza and really quite enjoyable. Have to recognize them for doing something innovative.
We went to this restaurant with friends who eat gluten-free and the menu was basically wide-open to them, so it's a great experience if you have that dietary restriction.
Service was pretty amazing. The owner is a friendly older gentleman who's proud of his food, willing to give his favourite recommendations and will joke around with you to make sure you're entertained. It's a great experience that is worth trying out.
Great meal! friendly staff, and oh my god the pizza was amazing. I had the saffron chicken pizza and I would highly recommend it. Full of flavour and everything about the pizza was just right.
My friend booked a reservation here for a birthday dinner, which was kind of funny because when she let me know I had actually Googled this place the week before. Shiraz Persian is one of those places I had always driven by, but had never been to. I’m not sure why, especially now that I’ve actually tried the food out!
Great restaurant. Family run. Friendly staff. Beautiful and calm restaurant environment. If looking for a low-carb choice, choose their greek salad with chicken kebob.
This Persian restaurant is one of the best I have been to! It has a great menu with some nice wine and cocktails choices also. The staff are superb and treat the guests very very well. I have been a number of times and this little gem of a place has never come up short. I highly recommend for lunch or dinner.
Good lunch. Had a good lunch with my wife. Chicken kabobs were great and the pomegranate stew was amazing! But in the expensive side though.
Reply to calgary diner below about their visit. Not sure why the individual below had such a bad experience with their meal. However for those looking to this site I would look at all the great comments that Shiraz has had and over look the bad ones.
Obviously the comment from - calgary diner below does not do shiraz food any justice. I hope that if they did not like the food that was served to them they would have mentioned it to their server.
I have been going to shiraz for the past 4 years and am a strong supporter of this family run restaurant. Those that are seeking great service and quality food should visit this place. My favourite kabob house in town.
Excellent food, excellent service. This is probably the best restaurant service I've had in Calgary. Our server was very busy and she provided excellent service. Initially, she was quick to seat us and thoroughly explained the Shiraz favorites as we perused all the choices. The eggplant appetizer (Kashk-E-Bademjan) arrived shortly after ordering and did not disappoint. Quality checks occurred at each stage of our meal, so we knew our satisfaction was important to them. The assorted kebabs were flavorful and filling. It was very obvious to us that our server loved her job and that really added to our experience there!
Good Food, Good Service. This was my third visit to Shiraz and the food was as good as it was 4 years ago! I always get the beef kabobs and this time on my visit I also tried the Eggplant dip as an appetizer! It was absolutely delicious: I will be ordering it on all my visits there from now on :) The beef kabobs were great as usual and the chicken pizza that my bf had was also good. I have no complaints about the service: it was a little slow but it was Christmas eve and given how busy the place was I wasn't too concerned about it.
This place is great - very clean, good quality food - it was my third time there and I haven't been disappointed - chicken was very tender - appetizer were great an the service was amazing - will definitely go back
Janet from Calgary. Shiraz is one of our favourite spots in Calgary! Don't miss the signature appetizer - kashk-e-bademjan (eggplant) - even if you are not an eggplant fan (I am not). It is absolutely fantastic! Other great dishes are the koobideh (ground beef kebab) and all of the wonderful Persian pizzas. The owner is so warm and friendly, we always feel like we are eating with family. Located close to downtown on Centre Street N.
Savoury Rack of Lamb. We were greeted by the owner and invited to sit. We ordered and within 5 minutes our appetizer arrived. A wonderful eggplant dip with bread, really tasty! As soon as we were finished our main course arrived. I enjoyed the rack of lamb, there was a wonderful lemony marinade on it and the meat was so tender. My husband ordered the spicy version of Kabob-e-Koobideh. And it was spicy, too spicy for him. We finished our meal with baklava, lovely as it was not drowned in honey. We will return here.
Very Tasty. My wife and I both had the Kabob-e-Koobideh, it was delicious, reasonably priced, very friendly service, would definitely recommend it.
Delicious food! I had the lamb shank and it was very tasty. For desert I couldn't decide on the ice cream or the Turkish style baklava and the owner was very prompt to bring me combo of both for the same price.
By the way the ice cream is home made with rose water, saffron and either pistachios or mangos. I had the pistachio one. Both desserts were exquisite.
I was there over a holiday weekend. Even though very courteous it was slow paced. Which is understandable when you're running the front shop by yourself.
Great food and great service. Had the beef tenderloin kabob. When it first came out i was worried as it looked like a small amount of meat with lots of rice with one grilled tomato. The beef was so tender and flavorful. One of the best kabobs I've ever had. And like what other reviewers had said get the rose water pistascho ice cream. Made by the owner.
Great place for good eats. Great food. Great pizza - the best I've ever had. If you don't see pizza in the menu, look at the entrees and ask them to make it into a pizza.
Super relaxed environment.
Shiraz Nourishes - Body and Soul!. An absolutely unique experience. Going to Shiraz is like returning home - the food is of high and consistent quality prepared by the owner who is a pure delight. I have been warmly welcomed upon on each visit and have always left pleased and content.
I fully accept the decor as authentic as I have several Persian friends. I especially appreciate the effort to teach aspects of the culture by setting up displays such as the the New Year's table.
Good food is good food. Authentic food is authentic food. BUT feeling cared for, attended to, AND well fed is nourishing for both the body and the soul and that makes for a superb dining experience.
Today was our first day trying Persian Cuisine and we were not disappointed. Our excellent server Rochelle walked us through each menu item from apps to main courses. I had the lamb shanks which practically slid off the bone. The flavors were exquisite. My wife tried the chicken, pommegranite and walnut stew based on Rochelles recommendation. This stew simmers for 17 hours and the flavors are unlike anything I have eaten. This is a MUST TRY for anyone who eats here. We will definitely be back. The food, ambiance and especially the service was excellent.
Amazing. Our waiter (the owner) was so friendly. The saffron rice is to die for and the portions are perfect. Delicious. The baklava is great too!
Tasty!. It's actually quite tasty. We first started off with the eggplant dip and it was delicious! Next we ordered the Shiraz special platter and added a ground chicken kebab. We didn't care too much for the ground beef and ground chicken kebab as it lacked some flavour, but the tenderloin and pieces of chicken breast was delicious! Rice was delicious too!
I think prices are slightly high for what it is, but we would definitely go back. Service was great too!
Excellent. Discovered Shiraz through Deal Find. Never would have known about it otherwise, and we are glad we went. Portions are good sized - not huge, but not as small as I would have thought. Extremely tasty, though.
We had the stuffed grape leaves, tomato, cuke and onion salad, bean soup (much better than I expected), chicken and beef kabobs (him); chicken, pomegranate and walnut stew (her); and then a truly divine ice cream (saffron, rose water and pistachio) for dessert.
Friday night and it was busy, but not rushed. A few kids, but no issue at all. Appys and salads did arrive very quickly, but once the entrees arrived we did not feel rushed at all and took our time enjoying the tastes. A little over 90 minutes for us to eat and savour.
We expressed interest int eh decorations and had the owner, his wife and (presumed) daughter all come over and explain things to us and a very brief history of Persia (Iran). Very interesting.
Definitely on our list of favourites in the city. Bit of a trek for us, but well worth it. I would say it is mid-priced, and solid value - not cheap and not expensive.
Great service - wonderful food. First time here and I'll go back. I used my Living Deal voucher last evening. Myself and a friend were treated very well. Our server was friendly, attentive but not hovering over us.
The baked eggplant appetizer was very good. We both chose Lamb Shank but we also wanted to try the Wednesday special stew. A portion of the stew was also served and the price was reduced. Our Lamb shanks were meaty and tender, The sauce was incredible. The rice was tasty and needed no additional seasoning. We shared a unique ice cream for dessert. Our dessert was comped making it taste even better.
The dinner was impressive and I would give it 4 1/2 stars out of five. I want to go back and try the lunch buffet.
Cultural Delight - I'll be back for a Persian round 2!. A group of us went to Shiraz because we had a Persian friend in from out of town and I was curious about the cuisine.
He ordered for us, and we started with an appetizer called Kashk-e-bademjan, an warm garlicy eggplant delight served with pita and the Dolmehs (as I knew I liked these grape leaf appies already). Both were absolutely sumptuous.
The three of us then shared 3 mains including the Chicken Barg Kabob, the Kabob-e-Koobideh (seasoned ground beef kabob) and the Khoreshteh Fesenjaan (pomegranate stew with walnuts and chicken). While I didn't try the beef kabob, the other two were spot on. The Fesenjaan was my personal favourite which was a surprise to me! You can taste the pomegranate but it's not sweet like you'd expect and the chicken and walnut compliment it perfectly.
The service was excellent, the place was clean and cute and the owner is an entertaining older man who makes you feel as if this dish was made just for you.
Highly recommend!
It must of been kids and coupon night when my wife and I went. There were half a dozen preschool children in the restaurant. Just be aware of this. The food was not bad but our waiter was firing courses at us a little too fast for a couple that likes to dine and not shovel food down as fast as we can. If you want to be in and out in under an hour, that's fine. I'm not very familiar with this kind is cuisine, and I enjoyed the various flavours. However, if I do return here it won't be on kids night, er, I mean Friday.
One of our favorite restaurants!. My girlfriend and I have been to Shiraz on a few occasions now, and have been meaning to write a review, but are just now getting around to it. By no means should that be taken to mean we were underwhelmed though, as our experiences at Shiraz have been nothing but excellent.
We initially went here using a dealfind coupon(and have been back several times without one now). At first we found it a bit difficult to find, as the outside is somewhat unassuming. Once inside though, it has a pleasant atmosphere with tasteful, but not overstated décor. The host is always enthusiastic about greeting guests. This is a general theme for the whole experience as it is a family run establishment and there is an obvious sense of pride in their restaurant. Usually either the owner or his son have waited on us, and they are both eager to explain what is on the menu, how best to enjoy it, and to make recommendations if we are unsure what to get. It is an ideal place to try something new if you have never had Persian cuisine before, as I hadn't either the first time I went, and I never felt awkward asking about something before ordering it.
The food has always been fantastic, and I have yet to be disappointed in anything I've tried. The Kashk-e-bademjan(roasted eggplant dip) is worth the trip all by itself. The main courses have all been very good, with exceptional flavor, and I am perpetually surprised by the rice. For something many restaurants treat as something to take up space on a plate, the saffron flavored basmati rice is delicious without any accompaniment. I would also strongly suggest at least trying the homemade ice cream. I was unsure of the notion of saffron and pistachio flavored ice cream at first, but it really is amazing.
I am always reluctant to write a review with no negative points, but of all the times I've been to Shiraz, I've yet to find anything that was not excellent. This has become one of our favorite restaurants, and I suppose the only negative I can think of is that the prices are a little high to justify going there every day. However, for the food and experience you get, it is certainly worth it.
First, great food. Second, the family running the restaurant is customer oriented, friendly and very real. Really enjoyed the dinner and will be back.
Highly recommended. We loved the restaurant. The food they serve is of high quality and delicious, the service was very friendly and the atmosphere was very nice. We went here for our anniversary and found it to be perfect for the occasion. I love that this is a high quality family-owned restaurant. We would love to come here again and bring friends!
All-Around Delicious!. Great experience from start to finish. It's a family-run business; over the course of the evening we were served by a very friendly server, as well as both her parents! We had the Kashk-e-bademjan as an appy - delicious, warm eggplant dish served with pita bread. Shared the ground-beef Persian Pizza, with great donair sauce, and the Khoreshteh bademjan (Eggplant stew). The menu says certain stews are only available on specific days of the week, but just ask them - the night we were there, they had at least 3 of them available. Finished with homeade rose & pistachio ice cream; very different flavor but worth trying. Made by Dad himself - and he even came over to ask us how we liked it! I'd go again.
My wife and I went for lunch and found the food to be excellent. The owner and his son were friendly and willing to take the time to explain different aspects of the food. The Persian ice cream was magnificent. Shiraz is a wonderful place for a special lunch.
Food was tasty but menu is not a good vegetarian choice. Combo platter for 3 could have been had a bit more veg. Service was excellent.
Great meal!. Thanks to yet another coupon voucher, my husband and I came here for lunch today. I don`t really know what Persian cuisine is, but it sounds exotic to me, and we were really looking forward to trying something different.
We went at 1pm, which was past lunch time, so the restaurant wasn`t even half full. The owner sat us down, engaged in some friendly chat and brought us our menus. I have to take note of this: he saw that my menu was stained with food and gave me a clean one. I appreciate such gestures as it shows that the owners care about customer satisfaction. Hubby and I then decided on our food - we got the Kashk-e-bademjan (roasted eggplant) to share, I decided on the Kabob-e-Koobideh (Ground beef) and hubby wanted the lamb shanks.
The roasted eggplant arrived first - I loved this as I love eggplants, but whatever flavors they made this with, it was excellent, although a bit oily. Our entrees didn`t take too long to arrive - both were served with a generous serving of basmati rice, and mine came with a piece of roasted tomato and a wedge of onion. My beef was pretty tasty - I have to say nothing really too special... kind of remind me of hamburger. Hubby`s lamb was tender, fall of the bone goodness. The tomato-like sauce that it was braised in accompanied it quite well.
We were too full for dessert but am looking forward to try it at a later time. I`m still not entirely sure what Persian cuisine is but we liked what we tried today. Prices are on average to a bit high, depending on what you like. Service was most excellent from the owner and his wife.
Shiraz Is the new Persian spot in Calgary. 1st time coming to Shiraz and i must say I was blown away by how great the service was, how tasty the food is and how the owner did such a fine job of making you feel like your having grade A food almost as if your in the comfort of ur own home. This place has a chill vibe and i love the booth's. The restaurant is put together very well. The prices are fair for the quality of food you get. I dunno what this Slawomir Polska chump is on about and his ramblings but u gotta ignore ignorance. Im telling u people Imma Iran, Tehran kid and if want to be satisfied then Shiraz is your answer. Numbers don't lie, just look how many others agree with me!!
ur boy Yasha
It was a great restaurant. When we went, we didn't have a reservation but they managed to squeeze us in anyway. Great service too. They were Also out of the dessert I wanted since it was a busy Friday, but they made it for me anyway. Great service too!
A Royal Welcome. The first time I went to Shiraz, we receive the royal welcome! My boyfriend and I were seated by a nice gentleman in a private section and an oversized booth, made for 8. We were greeted by a beautiful waitress who was kind enough to take the time to go over every item on the menu because we must have had the "deer in the headlights" look when we opened it.
Then we had had an older woman come over and describe to us the dinner specials and then we had another older gentleman offer us a sample of the finest persian wine.
I ordered the Lamb Shank and receive several compliments for being so adventurous. When the dish arrived, I understood why. Its looks very intimidating, but has such an incredible flavour. The plate that arrived was enourmous, the Lamb was the size of my fist and still on the bone, it came with a side of saffron rice with the most amazing aroma, and tasted like its fragrance. After the meal, it must have been grandpa's turn to come out and greet us....he would be the chef who perfected my Lamb Shank. I have never appreciated the amount of work involved in preparing a meal until I discovered that 16 hours went into the preparing my Lamb Shank. It was an amazing meal and an ever more enchanting experience. I got the meet the entire Shiraz family and had an excellent meal. I cannot wait until next time!!!
Very Good.....but with a High Price Tag. Tonight me and my girl went to Shiraz to meet up with some friends before the holidays. We had reservations for 8pm.
Upon entering we noticed 2 tables were filled with people but the rest of the place was empty, other then us of course. Decent Decor, nothing special about it, its an average area, booths line both sides and some tables in the middle. The music was a dance/trance style, not really entertaining.
We started with Shiraz appetizer platter Combination of dolmeh, kashk-bademjan, yogurt & cucumber dip, and torshi. Which was a nice introduction into Persian cuisine, as most of our group have never had this. You will need to order another 2 baskets of pita to finish this.
One at the table ordered: Shirazi salad Diced tomatoes, onions, cucumbers, and chopped parsley with our fresh lime, lemon juice and olive oil dressing. which was quite nice.
The rest of us all ordered our mains: Shiraz special Combination of barg (strip loin), chicken filet and koobideh kabob, served with basmati rice flavoured with saffron and grilled tomato, bell peppers and onions. (Serves two) it was good, the helping of saffron rice was large, but the amount of meat you got did not justify $35.
All our food was cooked perfectly, and it was most delicious.
I would go back again, but not too soon. I am sorry to say that the price tag does not compliment what is served.
I would recommend this place for people wanting to try Persian Cuisine, but remember it will come at a high price.
Also they tend to run out of the popular items quite quickly.
Delightful and exotic. Came in on a Saturday night with a party of 4 and was seated in one of the large comfortable booths along the west side of the restaurant. The staff were incredibly helpful explaining all the dishes on the menu and giving us advice about the best items for us to choose. We started with the appetizer combination and it was delightful - nearly enough for a meal for two people, nicely filling for four people. We then had two of the meal combination platters (each was a dinner for two). Both the food and wine lists were affordable and of high quality. Overall I rate this restaurant very highly and recommend that you visit! Plenty of free parking both on 11th Ave and on Centre St, as well as in the restaurant's own parking lot around back.
Like it a lot .....But. I really like the place , the food is great and since it's a family run business , this family knows how to take care of their customers .
The only but is that quite often they are sold out of the most popular dishes . How can that be ?
Hopefully they fix that issue before our next visit.
Great service Awsome food Fantastic music
The food at Shiraz was wonderful. It is Persian comfort food at it's best!
Delicious Food. Our family loves Persian food, and this restaurant does not disappoint! The food is 100% authentic, prepared beautifully, and served with friendly, courteous staff, who are also the owners (family). We ordered appetizers, koofteh koobideh, ghormeh sabzee, kabob bargh, a pitcher of Doogh (yogurth drink) and everything was top notch. We go every time we visit Calgary.
It just a "must eat " food in calgary, simply One of the best mediteranian food I ever had.Verry nice place with nice people runing it.
Very friendly, family run resteraunt with a nice selection of authentic, homemade Persian cuisine.
For exceptional service and exotic food, visit the family-owned Shiraz Persian Cuisine.
Shiraz is one of the few halal places in Calgary that offers quality of service and ambience comparable to fine dining. It is a pleasure to dine here and the food will most likely have you coming back.
Scrumptiously Fit Food
+4.5
Shiraz is distinctive since it offers a different take on menu items we thought we were use to. However, there is always that little room to take the dishes and make them better.
With a name like Shiraz, and sleek, modern decor featuring red leather booths, shiny black tables and tile floors, it's easy to think that you're stepping into a wine bar or lounge. While the month-old restaurant does have a short wine list, its specialty
