I used to not like Indian food until a friend brought me to this place. It’s always freshly made for you, the garlic naan bread is cooked in clay oven. You can get your food from mild to very spicy level. The owners are incredibly nice.
This is my number one go to for Indian food. It’s worth making the drive!

Bad news everyone... Surya is no more. New name, new management... And new recipes. Now everything tastes like the pre-packaged Chef Boyardee butter chickens like the other low quality Indian food shops in town.
Real shame too... This was BY FAR the best Indian in the City, we were regulars for three years. The hunt begins for a new joint. :-(
Amazing food and service. Great selection of menu items. Neat and clean restaurant. Excellent catering service for large gatherings. The snacks like samosas and Gulab Jamuns are excellent.
Absolutely wonderful Indian food. The pastry on the samosas was incredibly flaky and delicious, and the naan, probably some of the best I've ever had, was equally amazing. We ordered takeout, and she was very friendly and helpful in accommodating a nut allergy. We tried the Butter Chicken, Palak Paneer, Chicken Curry, and Beef Curry, and all were really, really good! Everything tasted extremely fresh - will definitely be our new Indian takeout spot.

Great Indian food! I always order the chicken korma with basmati rice and garlic naan! And it's fantastic! They are fast to serve but not the friendliest. I lived a few blocks from the restaurant and asked for delivery and they told me I should just walk and come pick it up myself! I mean, how rude! So I walked and picked it up myself.....
Being born and raised in London (England), I have a nose for good curry; this is it. YYC's Indian food scene is up and coming and hasn't quite hit the quantity that I've eaten my way through but Surya is a local fave for takeout for me. Well spiced, fresh and pretty great quantities for the big eater. Thumbs up from one picky Indian-foodie. :)
Great evening buffet!. We go to Surya every so often when craving Indian. They have dinner buffet every Monday and Wednesday.
We often arrive late - 8pm or so - and the service is always great, we never feel rushed.
The dishes are always hot and fresh even at the end of night.

Delightful. Best Indian food in Calgary hands down. Been there twice now and every dish is delicious. Naan bread is off the hizzie. New favorite spot after tonights delights.

Excellent!. We started with the vegetarian samosas served with tamarind and mint chutneys – delicious. As mains we had Kadhai beef (wok-cooked with peppers), Vindaloo fish, and Palak Paneer (spinach with cottage cheese), with sides of saffron rice and garlic naan. The two non-vegetarian dishes came nicely garnished (ginger, cilantro on the beef). The food was fresh and tasty. My favourite was the fish vindaloo, which had a nice and fluffy texture. The naan bread was moist, spicy, nicely thin and crisp. Servings were generous, biggest I've had in Calgary – we had to take much of the food home. Service was attentive and unobstrusive. An overall very pleasant fine dining experience was rounded off by the flavour of sugar-coated fennel. Great value, great business! We'll be back!
Best Indian dinner buffet in downtown Calgary! The price is reasonable and there is a good selection of dishes. The paneer and butter chicken is good, not to mention the naan. Oh and the mango and rice puddings are an excellent end to the meal! Staff and ambiance are also great!

Fantastic. The vegi samosas are absolutely delicious, the dough is puffy and light and melts in your mouth. Overall great food and good value.
Yum. I've enjoyed every meal I've ordered from Surya, but my go-to meal is Veggie Korma. It's veryyyyyyy tasty. I think this is one of the top places for Indian food in Calgary.
A definite neighborhood gem! Daal Makhani is a must have along with the garlic naan. Can't wait to go again!
Extremely tasty food. We had the dinner buffet, which had a great selection of popular dishes (butter chicken, lamb korma, fish pakora, etc.). I'll definitely stop by again soon.
Tried this as it had great reviews and we love it. Garlic naan- tasty. Rice perfect- I'm very fussy about meat quality with Indian and the butter chicken is nice real chicken- not dry but perfectly cooked. Not a spicy dish but for people who like Indian and who aren't wanting intense spices - this is your Indian restaurant in Calgary. We love ordering this in. For the reviews that say its flavour less and no spices- it's like salt and pepper. This place has great flavour and spices but if you want more then add extra

Would recommend for butterchicken fix. I order pick-up from here on occasion and never find myself disappointed or put off. Service is always friendly and tastes like authentic *westernized* Indian (butter chicken). I think other dishes are perhaps a little more true authentic Indian, but I'm happy with my butter chicken, rice and naan. : )
My husband and I have been eating here for quite a while. Excellent food and reasonable pricing for the portions you get (huge compared to anywhere else we've been). I could pick favorites off the menu but to be honest there hasn't been anything we ordered that we didn't end up loving! I definitely recommend this to any Indian cuisine lovers =)

Decent. Clean and cozy dining room. Friendly service. 'Not the most flavorful Indian food I've ever had, but decent in a pinch.
Best Indian Restaurant I know of. I've been here many times now and have yet to try something I didn't like. In fact, I keep trying different things off the menu and they never fail to deliever extreme deliciousness. The staff is very friendly too. If Surya were to ever shut down, I'd be very very sad.

Absolutely Amazing. This is the best Indian food I've ever had, by far. I get Surya at least once a week and have never been disappointed. We always order lots so that we'll have plenty left over for more meals throughout the week. The service is awesome and everyone is super friendly. This is in my top 5 for all of Calgary.

Worth Checking Out. Indian restaurants can be really good, really wrong, or they can really make you think.
Surya made me think. I decided to do the lunch buffet to-go and was pleasantly surprised that I was offered a second smaller container if I wanted dessert (yes please!). The hostess also grabbed tinfoil and wrapped me up 4 pieces of naan bread, which made me extremely happy. I dished out my choices and proceeded to dive in when I got back.
This is where the thinking comes in. The paneer was made with the mixed frozen vegetables and canned sliced mushrooms. The chickpeas also came from a can that were used in the korma. Now, normally this wouldn't be a good thing but there was nothing wrong with the food. In fact, it was delicious. Butter chicken, korma, paneer, all of it was really good. I ate all of it when I normally put part of it away for dinner. That's a really good thing.
The only sad thing about the whole meal was the lack of cardamom in the rice pudding. It was just regular rice pudding and I had a frowny face moment for it.
Definitely check this place out. The little extras they do make the difference.
Simply the BEST!!!!. I am of Indian origin and typically hate going out to eat at Indian restaurants that serve "westernized" food. But Surya rivals even the top restaurants in India. Heck, it may actually be better than my own mother's cooking! Love everything on their menu, especially their Dal Masala, Dal Mahkni, Aloo Nan and their mixed Raita. Their buffet is great for trying different things and is reasonably priced. My wife and I have been going there for years... love the family that runs it too!
Enjoy the food. We cheked out Surya's buffet around 06:00 PM for a little early dinner and enjoyed it very much. It's a nice and clean restaurant and food is really delicious. The waitress also brought us freshly baked bread as part of our meal which we had from different plates. Dessert was really good too. Good both for the vegetrians and unlimitted ones!
Surya is hands down the best Indian food restaurant in Calgary. Awesome friendly service and always spot on terrific Indian cuisine. The buffet is deadly as all of the available food is fresh and tastes just as good as ordering from the menu. Try the rice pudding as that is the best in Calgary.
Best Indian Buffet in the city. Service is amazing, when they don't have our favorite dish out in the buffet they make a bowl of it just for us.
Favourite Restaurant in Calgary. Have been going to Surya for about 3-4 years now. Every time we go (~1 week consistently), we have great service and delicious, fresh food. Find it absolutely astounding that there are reviews on this site saying that the food/service was poor. I have never written a review on urban spoon before, but felt compelled to say that this is a GREAT family-run restaurant and I've never had anything but perfectly cooked, fresh, hot, delicious conversation-stopping food! I don't know what we'd do if Surya moved or wasn't around! Keep it up!
Authentic and reasonably priced... family fare!. Love this place, love the food and the owners/servers are family! They are forever smiling and focus on your experience. 5 stars!
I've been to Surya a few times and it's always been either for the lunch buffet or the dinner buffet. Selection is decent and the food tastes pretty good. The dinner buffet is one of few in Calgary, which is nice to see. I was a little surprised to see that their lunch buffet taken to go ("lunch box") is not self-serve, but it was great nevertheless. Good price too ($10)! Not one of my favorite Indian restaurants in Calgary, but far from the worst.
I did take out from their buffet table. The food was just made and it seemed fresh. The nan bread was made fresh too and not reheated "packaged" bread I have tasted some restaurants use. The young man helping me with my order was really helpful too. I was recommended this restaurant by my coworker/friend and even though I had done take out I think it would be worth going back there again for the food.
