I stumbled across the Empanada Queen at the Lilac Festival in Calgary and had the opportunity to try some of their empanadas. I had the beef, spinach and feta and the cheese empanadas with a side of salsa. The prices were very reasonable for the amount of food provided.
The empanadas themselves were golden brown and were marked with the flavor so there was no confusion. Once I bit into them I found a good crunch and amazing flavors. They were moist and full of different textures and the salsa was some of the best I've ever had. This is a definite must try if you see them out and about.
I couldn’t help myself. I had to try a chicken AND a beef empanada. Absolutely delicious! (I think I might have found the best empanadas in the world and they’re in a Chilean restaurant in Calgary. 😏)
Always so good. Always make it a point to get some when I come to Calgary.
Unbelievable food and atmosphere!! I'll definitely be coming back again!! I recommend the Barros Luco!

I took the time to read all the reviews because I knew the bad reviews were written by Chilean people. I am Chilean too and this place is fantastic, of course the food is not as good as the food cooked by my mom (sorry Empanada Queen lol ). Everything is delicious, is very difficult to cook Chilean food in Calgary. The staff is super friendly and very helpful. My husband is Canadian and we really like this place :).
Always a pleasure to eat there. Is so tasty and the owner always makes sure you are doing good and enjoying the food.
Try the Barros Luco sandwich! Is delicious!!’
We always enjoyed their empanadas when we lived in Calgary. They're so good we ordered some when we passed through Calgary on vacation. Great food and great service!
Stopped by and picked up two Empanadas for dinner. They were delicious!!
Amazing food...Would highly recommend! Super friendly atmosphere too
The food is amazing and these laadies are so wonderful
Very good food. Made fresh and hot. The staff is friendly.
Súper buenas y muy frescas
Delicious and tasty and yummy. Pricey but I guess that is normal for all sandwiches.
So helpful and friendly !! And not to mention amazing empandas !
Delicious and fresh!
The service is very friendly and helpful here.
The empanadas taste REAL- like homemade and not from a box. The ground beef empanada is excellent- the fresh salsa with it takes it to another level.
I also tried the shrimp and cheese- tasted very fresh but was honestly kind of bland- there was a lot of cheese and no seasoning. Some hot sauce or more pico de gallo makes it enjoyable, however.
I like how they give you the option of fried or baked for their empanadas.
The overall menu and service makes this place a winner, though- highly recommended to take some home!
Bought a groupon to try it out, amazing! Got 6 all different some spicy some regular and a couple of fried. Wow... all of them were great. Preferred the spicy and the dipping sauce is great. Very clean, very friendly and very helpful with suggestions on which to try. I have only had Lebanese style before. Will definitely be going back. We bought extra to put in the freezer for lunches.
We tried the beef and chicken empanadas with salsa at the Taste of Calgary event and they were both delicious!! Will definitely be going to check out what else they have to offer at their restaurant soon!
Hidden in the industrial area of south Blackfoot Trail is a hidden gem for Latin food. Empanada Queen's Chilean empanadas are amazingly filling.
I'd suggest getting the ground meat empanadas over the sliced meat. The ground beef or chicken seems to be more packed and denser. There's actually...
The last time I had empanadas was in New York. The crispy crust and tender inner texture of the Venezuelan empanadas was deliciously unforgettable. Since then, I had been longing for it, but was never in close vicinity to any community that has empanadas as a traditional food. This summer, I happened to stumble across Empanada Queen in the SE.

This place was really delicious and the owner is one of the nicest people you'll meet. The empanada's here are huge and stuffed full. The empanada's I enjoyed the most were the cheese and chorizo (deep fried goodness) and the chicken empanada. They also sell alfajores here, make sure to grab one, or a few, while you're here.
Those Chilean deep fried cheese empanadas have become my new favorite snack! They make a perfect pair with the housemade salsa. Great for parties too :)
Service with a smile! Ground beef empanadas pastry was excellent and good size too. Chorizo and cheese has a nice pastry deep fried with loads of cheese. Great people and an example of a promising small business in YYC. I'll be going back to get a dozen empanadas again and again they make fantastic snacks and the salsas as all made in house too!
Hidden Gem!. Flavourful Friendly and Affordable
Empanada's are full of flavour, so many options too!
Sandwiches are warm delicious cheesy sirloin goodness with fresh bread!
Great prices for delicious authentic food!
Good stuff. I really liked the cheeze and shrimp empanada.....
A nice alternative.
Delicious! Excellent food, great service.. We grabbed a groupon for Empanada Queen and headed there for lunch the other day. I had the spicy chicken empanadas, my wife had a couple of the spinach and cheese. They were so delicious. Everything is hand made fresh daily. The spicy chicken wasn't too spicy. The salsa was very good. It's also available to purchase, and I definitely recommend trying it.
The building is a little out of the way but not too hard to get to. They do have a dining area inside and there are drinks available (I tried the Mexican Cola, very tasty). We will certainly be going back often.
Ricisimooo!!. If you have never been to Chile trust me when I say that this is authentic Chilean food!
My favourite is the Churrasco Italiano- which is a well-sized sandwich with delicious bread, seasoned beef, avocado, mayo and tomatoes!
Don't forget to try the Empanada de Queso (cheese empanada) served with their homemade aji (salsa). You won't be disappointed with any of the food options because they are all so good!
The people working here are very nice and you can tell take pride in their food! Try it out!
Fresh, flaky and gooey goodness!. So, first off, you have to love this kind of food to appreciate this place. The store is nothing special to look at, but I'm glad they moved locations and now have tables. I had the coupon deal so I went in on a Saturday of a long weekend to get empanadas to go, but I was hungry too. I ordered the pork sandwich to stay (they only had the pork at the time) with tomatoes and avocado. The owner recommended eating it there as it's messy - so I did, and it was messy! But very good - fresh tasting, light, and the home made bread (little round patties of bread) were awesome! I took spicy chicken, sliced beef, and spinach and feta empanadas home. I vacuum sealed most for the freezer (kind of squished them though) and had one of each for later. Very good - my fave is actually the spinach and feta. The dough is substantial but not overly heavy. The fresh salsa is really good (zippy!) - but expensive. I think it's partly what made the empanadas taste so fresh. I have to try the cheese and shrimp next time (they are fried). I recommend this place for empanadas to go and I also think you should try a sandwich - so go there hungry!
Amazing!!. We ordered 12 fresh cheese empanada, and they were amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! especially their homemade salsa.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Awesome. Delightful Chilean. Sandwhiches are fresh and tasty. Call ahead if in a hurry. Great food but pricey for a take out stand
Chilean Comfort Food. Gave it a try with a living social coupon and very glad I did. Tried the cheese, spinach, chopped beef and ground beef empanadas, all were delicious. Very friendly staff. Small place with a couple of tables, we ate in, but I guess that most people take it to go. The empanadas were tasty but not spicy at all, so I gave them a kick with the fresh homemade salsa, then had a dulce de leche cake for dessert. I guess my only complaint is this is dense comfort food, so I was craving some vegetables afterward, but they do sell salads, so there you are. I'll be back.
Great food! We had our empanadas right out of the oven. Everyone should go there.
Love the food! Love the staff!. I have been to Empanada Queen a few times now and evertime the staff remembers me. What a great experience! I never know what to eat and choose based upon thier recommendations. I am never let down! Love it!! Will eat here again :)
The pastry casing was flaky while the savoury mixture beef, onion and olive filling was tasty. I loved the aji, which looked like a cross between tomato salsa and salsa verde but tasted more complex.
Running concurrently out of the same address as Pizza Roma, Empanada Queen serves up, beyond Empanadas, a variety of other dishes that are common “fast food” in Chile.
