Hell yes to the corn fritters. Ordered a snack pack and a 3 piece fritters. Ate all the fritters in one go...haha and got too full to eat the rest of my meal. DELICIOUS. Ate the chicken a little later, and it was still juicy and awesome. Love the gravy at this location too...! I'll need to try the fritters with honey next time! For under $10, was a lot of food for lunch and snack.
Love that this location has been around for so long and not replaced by some dumb high-rise or something else the city does not need. Their chicken is OK, could definitely use some seasoning. Their gravy and fries are tasty and their corn fritters are delicious! Nice and sweet with a crispy skin on the outside. Priced very well and the staff are cheerful.
This location has been around since 1958, and it still serves excellent old school fried chicken Don't forget the corn fritters... This is my place to indulge in deep fried goodness!
This is the one and only joint in Calgary whose chicken doesn't give my boyfriend Norman diarrhea! I think the key is the seasoning- It really is a delicate dance of salty perfection in the ballroom that is my mouth, and my goodness the batter is wonderful! Most places fry the chicken too much, and always over salt, which I think is what upsets Norman's very sensitive digestive tract.
Well it's been a while. The chicken was less salty from why I remember which is great. Friendly service and nice portions ($10 for 4 pieces, fries and corn fritters). Wish they'd get some other sauces going on for the chicken!
The food at chicken on the way Kensington is delicious! The chicken itself is moist and meaty, the fritters are delicious and even though the fries more closely resemble traditional English chips, they too are amazing. I frequently crave it but barely ever give in and when I do I almost always go to the newer forest lawn location! The reason why? The people are the Kensington location are incompetent and down right rude! I asked if the recipes and materials were the same at all the locations, response "I don't know" no elaboration other then to grumble something about being new. I ordered a hungry man with all white meat and NO wings. I repeated the no wings part a number of times as my husband and son were all sharing this (yes the portions are that big) and none of us like wings! I of course knew this would cost extra but don't mind as it would feed 3 people with left overs! I get home and open the box and it is 2 breasts and 3 wings! I tried to call and complain but the only response I got was "well we didn't charge you extra so that's what You got and if you want to come back we can charge u for the extra for the breasts and exchange them for you" I declined this because it's rude, especially when he asked the cashier he admitted to ringing it in wrong and not giving me what I asked for! I will more likely be making the further trek to the forest lawn location as customer service is actually important to me!
You get what you pay for right? It quick and cheap, but nothing overly special the food is good but not great. I eat there maybe once every couple of years but it always brings back childhood memories because I lived only a couple blocks away when I was young and my parents are there lots.
Whenever I'm in Calgary this is my first stop. I should probably feel shame for admitting that out loud but the chicken and corn fritters are just really good. I hate fried chicken, it grosses me out, but this stuff is crispy and on a different level. Pricing is good too, about $9-10 for a big meal.

The essential 1960s Calgary experience. If you want to know what it was like to be part of a blue-collar family in Calgary in a time before the 1980s, Chicken on the Way will deliver. It's an institution. Dad had it once a week growing up when his father worked for the CPR; we had it on very rare occasions that he could talk my mom into eating fried chicken and corn fritters. Try it at least once. Probably the best fried chicken in Calgary.
Very good. Fresh and tasty always!!
The very best.. Fantastic place serving the very best fast chicken. The corn-fritters are classic, the fries are real, the price is reasonable and the service is impeccable. I have been eating Chicken on the Way for 20 years and it's always been the best.
The better Option. The food is excellent & the service is fast & friendly. I love the corn fritters, which is an option that is difficult, if not impossible to find elsewhere. Besides supporting small business, it is superior cuisine than the alternative franchise option not far away.
Suprised. I've lived in Calgary for 25 years and never had Chicken on the way....
I've meant to, but never gotten around to it. I kinda wish i did earlier. Great chicken, moist on the inside, crispy on the outside, great seasoning. Is there anything else you look for in fried chicken?
Corn fried fritter things were also the bomb.
Ohmygosh. I've lived in Calgary for 18 years and always thought this place was just some dive. Not so. Tried it for the first time and the chicken is amaaaazing. Had a couple corn holes or whatever they call them and they were greasy goodness too. Don't expect to feel good afterwards but every bit of stomachache pain is worth it.
Better workers needed. Delicious and fresh tasting chicken but poor customer service.
This location is the BEST chicken on the way, they made a huge mistake when they franchised their brand.the other locations give them a bad name
A lifetime of Chicken on the Way. Fond memories of the delivery truck arriving at our home during the sixties. Not much has changed. The corn fritters are excellent, still. The chicken beats KFC hands down.
Wow. I'm not sure why I waited so long, but wow was this ever good. The chicken was hot, fresh, and perfectly cooked. Even the breast was beautifully moist. The breading was crisp and well seasoned. The fritters were excellent as well: moist cornbread with a touch of sweetness but not overly so.
I'll be back.
LATER:
I still love it, but have learned more.
In the past few months I've been to CotW several times. I have been seriously disappointed exactly one time (only). I've given up on the fries, they're basically a waste unless you like soggy fries. But I don't go there for fries so no big loss.
My experience suggests that my big disappointment was the takeaway part that was to blame. Usually when we go, we buy it and then eat immediately in the car. Messy, yes, but SOO GOOD. Last night, however, I picked up a package to bring home for the gang. When it got home it was soggy, greasy, and quite unappealing. The chicken was passable but the fries and fritters were terrible.
So, lesson learned: eat it in the car! If you must take it somewhere else, do NOT get it wrapped up. Get only chicken, and leave it open to the air so it can cool off without getting all soggy and terrible in its own steam. I've had their chicken cold a few times, because we always order too much. It always cools open because we're busy eating other pieces. It's always excellent and crispy, even when it's cool.
Lives in close proximity to Chicken on the Way.. What do porn and Chicken on the Way have in common? Both usually lead to a satisfying climax followed by increasing shame per visit.
I've only eaten here twice but both times were great experiences. The corn fritters are amazing! This is definitely my new KFC :)
Best deep fried chicken in calgary. LOVE YOUR GUYS CHICKEN
Feathers. Not a fan of deepfried feathers. Corn fritters are great (get with honey).
Best fried chicken in town. Not a big fan of fried chicken, but definitely like this one. Deep fired chicken and corn fritters, that's a good match. Got to try it..... Like to grab one on the way home when I work late. With a can of cold pop or a cold beer, that is a joy.
Corn fritters and honey make for a great dessert or meal. Id say skip the chicken!
Fritttttters!. Get the fries and fritters, honey, ketchup and vinegar! Skip the chicken.
YUM. So so good! Real sized chicken not the engineered little step pass an egg chicken you get at KF gross.
Friters are a classic ol style.....mmm gravy!!
Douse your chicken in hot sauce like you would chicken wings!
The deep fry oil is always fresh! And the fries they Cut and fry on the spot!

Better Then the Rest. Given the competition Chicken on the Way wins hands down. You just can't find great fried chicken, but this place is pretty damn good.
The Chicken was fine, I loved the how the skin was quite nice and crunchy. If you had eaten it seperatly it would be like eating chicken flavoured chips. The corn fritters were the best part of the meal though. I dipped them in my gravy which was quite comendable aswell. My only suggestion would be some sort of gravy infused fritters. Awesome!
The fries was the only part i was really disapointed with though. They were far to small. Like eating hash browns with your fingers small. They were fine fries but to give you an idea of how small they were, not a single frie even came close to the length of my pinky finger. And i don't have big hands.
Overall, very good chicken. If ordering in Calgary, don't even consider KFC.
Bes' fast chicken in town. Try to go when it's busy. Mos def fresh times! Great yardbird, top fries -- although it should be noted that a friend of mine notices CotW has been using potatoes with a higher sugar content recently, they black up as a result -- gravy tastes like chicken gravy. Well worth the trip. Only other fried bird of note in this town is to be found in a few Chinese shops. Chinatown's got some fine fried-up bird, yo.
Winner,Winner Chicken Dinner. I have been going here for years and you get value for your money.3 piece bonus way to go for $6.95.You eat this and you are full and still have money in your pocket.Go to KFC and get super loaded grease filled chicken and a pinch of dry cold fries no thanks.Plus KFC is over priced they don't get my money any more.Chicken on the way,All the WAY!!
Best chicken ever!!! I`ll take Chicken on the Way over any other chicken place!!
Fresh Fried Chicken. What KFC used to be, freshly cooked fried chicken. Not sitting in warmers until it is dried out. The downside is that is can be greasy.
The Good Stuff. I have been away from Calgary for 12 years now, but everytime (twice in that time) I'm in Calgary I make it a point of grabbing some Chicken on the Way.
Great chicken, not greasy, great home cut fries, and the corn fritters are the best.
sometimes you don't know what you got till its gone.... or you are.
Not bad, not bad.. Classic chicken meal for a good price. They had it fried up quick.
The best fried chicken in town.. I had forgotten about this place for the longest time, but have recently become hooked once again. The chicken is crispy and moist without being overly greasy. The corn fritters can be a little dodgy at times, but usually they're tasty morsels of corny goodness.
I used to like the occasional trip to KFC, but after eating at Chicken On The Way, you can't even compare the two.
The one and only. This is clearly one of the best spots in town for some good old fried chicken.
They do have their days when service isn't the greatest or their chicken is a little cold, but let's face it, you're probably not eating at the little shop so you've had to bring it home and by then, its slightly colder.
I would say 9/10 times I go there, the chicken is PIPING hot and crispy and just sooooo Delicious. And not to mention the corn fritters. (AMAZING!!)
Say what you want, but Calgary is lucky we have one of these...and soon enough a 2nd one!
Probably the best chicken and fritters in Calgary. To those who don't like this place, stick to KFC. You wouldn't know good chicken if it clucked in your face. Very tasty poultry but the fries are not the greatest. Well worth the drive.
Calgary original. It is great to see something in Calgary that has not changed in the past 30? Plus years
The chicken is great and the fritters are the perfect thing to eat with the chicken. But be prepared to wait if you show up at dinner time. What I have been doing recently is adding a piece of fish to the order.
French fries are real potatoes cut fresh. If you want to get things home and still crunchy leave the boxes open
Corn Fritter Frenzy!!. I could literally fill up on the corn fritters alone at this place, but then I would be denying myself the pleasure of a great box of crispy chicken and savory gravy! You get a great value for a filling meal, with lots of room to build that perfect mix. As quirky as it is, I also love the paper wrapping; it's like opening a present you know you're going to love. Here's to keeping family tradition and Calgary history alive!
Like it. They have good chicken, crispy but not too greeasy and not as salty as KFC's.
Just don't get the fries! Eventhough fries are freah-cut, but I found them overcooked in god-know-how-many-day-old oil.
This is part of Calgary's history, for fried chicken they do a pretty good job. The must if they have been in business so long, the chicken fritters is what does it for me. Price is great and quantity is very good, they keep packing them in.
Pretty good. I don't think its the best chicken I've ever eaten but I really enjoy eating here. The chicken isn't really greasy and really it's just preference.
Good Chicken. Nuf said.. I've been going to this place for as long as I can remember. Like Peter's it's part of the Calgary landscape. While they've had their up's and down's they've remained consistent enough and are a favorite of mine and most everyone I know.
While my recent attempts to eat healthier have kept me from visiting many of my formerly regular stops due to the types of food served I had to get a chicken fix.
The food was hot and fresh. I've always felt the chicken was the freshest you can get and this time it was very good. I've found the leaner pieces to be occasionally dry but this time it was quite the opposite.
I enjoy the corn fritters here and have even spent years coming up with my own recipe due to the fondness they created for me as a child. This batch was a little over cooked and darker than I'd expected but none the less they were great. I've never been a huge fan of fries but the fresh cut version they offer here are an exception for me, especially with the gravy.
I hope the Dunn family continues to offer their food to Calgarians for 50 more years. I know I'll keep coming back.
Chicken on the Way is Here to Stay!. Chicken on the Way has been a Calgary landmark for over 50 years now. The quality has come and gone and come back again, hopefully to stay.
Last night's visit yielded good quality food and quick service, despite the line up. They had ready made boxes piled high in anticipation of the evening rush which made for an interesting visual.
The service was friendly and efficient, even though there seemed to be only 2, maybe 3 employees there.
The chicken itself was very tasty, but a little on the dry side, especially the white meat pieces....it's an art to keep white pieces juicy but properly cooked.
The fritters, as others have commented were excellent. If not careful, I could see myself filling up on them.
To my delight, the accompanying coleslaw, fries and gravy were also highly flavorful and of decent quality. I was especially surprised with the gravy - it didn't look that good and I expected a tasteless paste. It was great and helped immensely with the drier bites of chicken!

The best part was the corn fritters. Deep-fried balls of dough dipped in honey. So good!
