I’m planning a trip to Vegas and I wanted advice from Ms. Biz. She knows her restaurants and she travels to Vegas six times a year. She also dines at some of the best restaurants in the world. I was hoping for her toned-down list, as I’m no baller. For this post, let’s listen to “9 to 5” by Dolly Parton.
We tried u and me because we heard it was the best dim sum place in Calgary. And although the food was nice, it wasn't the best I'd ever had. Hands down the best dim sum place in Calgary is Silver dragon.
This place is open for 20 hours a day! I hear they do great drunk food, but I'm rarely near downtown at night, so I wouldn't know! What I do know is that their dim sum is super delicious. Yummy enough for me to make the drive from fish creek about once a month. Parking is easy to find and not costly (I typically go on Sundays). This place is always packed, which means you need to lower your expectations when it comes to service, even with what it seems like 5-7 servers running around at all times! I will keep coming back for the food!
Chinese food is my comfort food. And shomai reminds me of the days when I was in my hometown dating. Ha. So basically, the shomai I was eating back home was yummy but not as full as this one, in U&me restaurant. And mind you, the shrimp inside was overwhelming. I thought I ate it all but hey, my every bite the shrimps says hello. The wanton soup was bland for me, but that's fine just add S&P. I ordered Shanghai fried noodles and I was able to take home half of it since one serving is always good to share. If you are craving for more dumplings, they hay it here, the usual price is about $6+ for dumplings. Jasmine tea was complimentary. The service was good too. So probably I will come back for their dumplings.
Always a great place for late night food. U & Me is open from 8 am to 4 am! The food is always fast and fresh and service is decent if you get here before midnight. The dim sum is really good and the hot plate items are large and a great value.
We did a special food order a while back and this is off the menu. They have a private room in the back for functions and can fit up to 30-40 people. We usually book functions here once in a while. Food is actually better when you book a big meal, it seems like that spend lots of time on preparing it. Almost everything was cooked to make you drool.
You and me restaurant is an excellent authentic Choice for Asian cuisine! My Taiwanese wife loves this place! You'll never go home hungry after going here. Open late and lots of parking around on Sunday's or after 6 during the week. One of our favourite spots for fresh authentic food!
Came here late night with the family. And quite surprised food was delicious!
Definitely order the xiao long baos, super juicy and I would say the best I've tried in Calgary. All the food came out piping hot and I didn't pay, but I think the prices were all pretty reasonable.
Service was not good. When we ordered, she told us to give the chef 15 minutes, while he eats dinner, before he would start cooking our dishes. We waited a very long time....30 mins and we're getting extremely hangry. To wait that long at a Chinese restaurant is unacceptable. I get the chef needs to eat, but they need a second chef, or have customers come first. I can respect the fact she told us, but dang we were hungry. Service wasn't attentive either
I've been here a bunch of times, sometimes for morning dimsum. or lunch, or even sometime after the bar as they open late. Those of you who only eat here late at night are totally missing out. At the night, the kitchen staff doesn't seem like they are about the quality of the food. Which I don't blame them, serving 100's of drunk Calgarians. But if you come here for dimsum or their lunch, the food actually really good!
Great place for dim sum. I take anyone visiting here. It's also 24hrs...no idea how they manage that. I always order WAY too much food too.
I have never had an issue with the service. It isn't overly friendly but it sure is efficient.
We recently used their private room for a wedding rehearsal dinner and it was great. There was sooo much food and everyone went home with leftovers. EVERYONE.
The service is always a hit and miss here but the food is always yummy! I love the dim sum here and the fried rice! Lots of choices and it's open till 4 am great for late night cravings!
We were in the mood for dim sum... around dinner time on Saturday. We went to Chinatown and found U & Me. It was open and they had a whole dim sum menu.
We got the usual, some shao mai, har gow, BBQ pork buns, garlic spareribs, squid in special sauce, BBQ pork in rice wrapper and, of course, sticky rice.
The pork in rice wrappers was okay - wrapper was kinda thick and chalky, but the shao mai (my favorite) were excellent, and the sticky rice was pretty good (my SO's favorite).
The bill came to $55 and change, which I thought was a bit steep for how much food we got but we were full so we didn't mind.
Overall, I think we'll be back, but only if it's not normal dim sum time. We'd still rather go to one of the trolley-served places like Regency Palace or Silver Dragon.
I used to live DT and I was in here every other day at all hours -- it's only closed for four hours a day. Food is always good, it attracts a mixed crowd of Asian gangstas and drunk white people after midnight. Both groups know good grub for different reasons. The gangstas like the real stuff and the drunks go for chicken balls and ginger beef. They do both equally well.
There's a couple things you need to know about this place. The first is that they rent it out to third parties--the food you're getting in the day isn't the same crew cooking it at night. The second is that these guys have had serious food safety violations. Check out the Calgary Health Authority web site. Probably no worse than others in Chinatown but it's worth noting if you go home and get the trots.
That said, it's good. Hits the spot. The dim sum is really good, it's up there. It's more expensive than it used to be but you can get real food at 4 am. I love the flash fried green beans. They used to have shark fin -- you can probably still get it if you ask. Priceless.
Love the late hours & the cheap menu. Been here twice, once after midnight and the other during dinner time (6-7). The service at night is SUPER slow had to flag the waiter multiple times. At dinner time they were quite fast with the service
Great central location for Cantonese dim sum. Best part is they'll steam to order so your dishes will arrive piping hot.
The standard dim sum dishes are all pretty good: shrimp dumplings (har gow), siu mai (pork & shrimp steamed dumplings) and braised chicken feet (fung zhao).
Service is sparse. It's pretty chaotic during peak hours (11:30am - 1:30 pm) on weekends. Ambiance is nearly non-existent. Go for the food. Conversation is a challenge during peak hours. Dim sum "happy hour" is prior to 11:00 am on weekends: discount on most dim sum dishes.
If you like egg custard tarts (dahn tat), the ones here are a must try. Served hot out of the oven. Let it cool down a bit before biting in.
Great authentic Chinese food with Dim Sum. Service is good and prices are above average but worth every penny. Dinner is good too with plenty of dishes to choose from and very good value. If you enjoy authentic Chinese food this is a good restaurant for casual dining.
I've had really mixed experiences at U&Me - last year, I had an experience here that I would rate a 2. A couple nights ago, I went with some friends (reluctantly) and it was some of the best dimsum I've had in Calgary, with the friendliest service! Our waitress, Margaret, was super cute and charming and very chatty. We will definitely be back - why do Denny's when U&Me is literally open until 4AM?
This used to be my place for a Chinese crave; as of now the food quality and service have gone down. I still like my usual siomai and charsiuba (pork steam buns) as a take out, but not as a dine in.
Definitely busy on holidays. A go-to with family and sometimes friends. Great dimsum with a good view of Center st. out the window. Prompt service.
U and me is a pretty good Chinese restaurant. Even though there are many mixed opinions on it, I think it is pretty good and serves good food. I do not eat there very often but so far its pretty good.
Tried a lot of dim sum places (because I'm Chinese) and this is one of the best places! Really like that it opens till late because it's much better than McDonald's. Lots of options and a good price!
My favourite Dim sum spot! Nice staff great hand made dim sum! I highly recommend it here!
Popped in last night after a concert and had some amazing dim sum. Order off the laminated menu. They brought us out the best tea ever to start. BBQ pork buns were best ever. Nice staff.
My favorite place to eat!. I make it a habit to go at least once a month to this place. I never went to China Town to eat until a few years back when I met my boyfriend, who is Asian. We went once and I was hooked. The century egg congee, pork dim sum, Chinese donuts, Shanghai noodles and ginger beef are fantastic. I have been coming here for years and the service is fast, staff are always the same group and so friendly. Yes, no debit under 30 dollars but trust me the food is SO WORTH IT!
I would pick eating here over an expensive steak house or French restaurant any day.
Great for after hour dimsum. Gets a little rowdy when the bars close, but good eats :)
Great dinner at U&Me. Went for dinner, found the food was totally legit, although beef in the beef & turnip hotpot was a bit gelatinous. I'm eager to go back for dim sum.
Standard of Service - Poor, Quality & Authencity of Food - very good value for money. When you walk into this restaurant strike off the word "service" from your mind, to the extent that you may feel they compromise with hygiene often, though i have never had any trouble after dining here. When it comes to authenticity of taste and quality U & Me sure stands out ! This was told by a Cantonese friend of mine. The dimsums(especially shrimps) are healthy and light. Dishes made of duck & Chicken feet are really tasty! The lotus seed bun is light in sweetness and an authentic recipe here. All who dines here would agree that the quantity served is huge. So lone diners like me have to be very careful while ordering and a box accompanies me back home always. None of the dishes from starters to entries have disappointed me till date. Unfortunately i have never been able to taste the late evening dishes that they only serve after 9:30 PM. I will have to break the rule of early supper one day for that. Overall, very good value for money, though not the most cosy one.
My best choice for great food at a good price. Food in U & Me is always found fresh made, hot delivered, and nice, I love it. Service is very nice as well, staff are friendly.
Great for late food. This is the best place for late night food, don't expect great service, but the food is good and if your willing to wait, they will make the food fresh when you order off the main menu. This is the only place close to all the clubs and casinos that is still open after they close. The dim sum is very expensive but is made fresh to order at night.
Really good and authentic Chinese food but needs improvement on dinning environment. Servers a mostly okay but that's completely up to your luck. I've met servers that are extremely nice and did everything they could to serve you and also the ones who really just didnt do their job right.... Good dim sum! A must try for sure! One of my favorite Chinese restaurant in DT area.
Good dim sum. Quality dim sum. Good place for bigger groups.
The food is good, the service is ok. In my opinion, I think the buns are the best.
I had the creamy lobster and some fried rice after the bar.. Be careful . If you don't look at your bill they'll try to rip you off with an extra dish.. Especially if your drunk! Other than there it's a good place to eat after the bar .. Not recommended for family
Great value. $10 per person for a great lunch. Lots of variety with 10 people there. They snuck the tripe past me and it certainly wasnt my thing but now I can say that Ive tried it. The chinese donut was fantastic.
Racial profiling?. I dined alone at about 1:30am. When I came in I was told as a "single diner" I needed to go to the other side of their split dining rooms. A little bit later another single diner who was Caucasian also sat on my side. I noticed that we had a TV that was not on. & the other side had only Asians with a Tv that was turned to an Asian station, also there was a single diner on the other side.. The lady who greeted me was very adamant about this. She almost seemed mad at me from the time I came & until I left.
Other than that, a clean restaurant, open late, serve dim sum all day/night. & really good fresh food.
My server was very polite. I came pretty much for desserts only. I had steamed shrimp dumplings, very good. & 2 kinds of steamed sweet cream buns, which tasted basically exactly the same.
I would go back for the dim sum.
I've been coming here for years. Open late, excellent food and the price is right. I must visit.
Nobody In Particular
+4.5
The Best Late Night Eats. Love love love coming here after a late night of drinking and being out on the town. The best thing about this place is their late night dim sum menu! What a great idea! I am constantly craving their barbeque pork buns. So fluffy and piping hot. I also love the crab meat and fish maw soup, salt and pepper squid, and all the other late night goodies they serve up. A great way to end a fabulous night.
Wonderful late night, liquor soaking, chinese quisine treat. Loved the frosty tipped, bar star dealers scramblin from the incoming police, added to the mindjya buisiness atmosphere. Great service. Just a lovely place all around. 5 stars for sure
Pleasantly Surprised, despite checkered reputation. Decided to walk through Chinatown early Saturday afternoon with a friend and randomly pick a place to try.
I'd always heard that U and Me had some of the best chinese in town but I also read about their run-in(s?) with the health board and of course, the fire right next door early in 2010.
We decided to roll the dice and walked up to a brightly lit, clean, and relatively nicely furnished dining room. The place is surprisingly big with a couple other dining rooms attached on either side of ours.
We were promptly seated and realized that the menu was predominately Dim Sum this time of day, still we had 79 DS options and at least 50 regular menu items to choose from.
I really wanted some greasy noodles to erase the leftover booze from the previous nights' Halloween party, so we decided to order some of both.
There was no hot and sour soup on this menu but when we asked our (very friendly and well-spoken) waitress, she said they could make us some.
We also had DS ginger beef, DS shrimp dumplings, and ended up with pork-fried noodles. I say ended up because we intially ordered mixed-meat fried noodles and the waitress immediately came back from the kitchen and kindly warned us that these were "very exotic" meats and not chicken and beef like we probably thought. Obviously not a Gringo-friendly dish and both of us are so white we are actually clear. I like strange foods but not my friend so we ordered the waitresses' recommendation and it was fantastic (and quite safe).
I can honestly say that was the best Ginger Beef I've ever had. Fresh, hot, crisp and not swimming in sauce.
Might have been the best hot and sour soup ever too. Close second to Lei-Lei's in Houston at least. Lots of fresh veggies and even shrimp in it.
Dumplings were bland and chewy but my friend really liked them.
Not super-cheap (both of us ate for $32 plus tip with A LOT of take-home leftovers), but the food and the thoughtful service will bring us back, maybe late-night next time to check out that scene.
When we paid I asked for a delivery menu and was quite surprised to find out that wasn't an option. Dine in only.
I'm still wondering whether it was the waitress, hostess, or kitchen that gave us the noodle mulligan, but regardless, it was much appreciated.
U & ME is the place to be. Listen,
It isn't the cleanest or by any means the most romantic restaurnat but if you want authentic asian culinary foods this is a must try!
The Crisp chicken with garlic is probably the best dish I've EVER eaten outside of Lichee Gardens (Toronto) Peking Duck.
The Shrimp Wonton soup is hearty in a freshly mae chicken stock daily.
The Chicken Fried rice is a little greasy but delisious and hearty.
And the price is right with a typical meal costing me less than $20.00 with leftovers to boot!
Wonderful. U and Me is a great place for food and their dim sum is great. The hotpots are great, particularly the Japanese eggplant one. They're one of the only places for decent late night eating in the downtown area, and their dim sum is always fresh and tasty. On a personal note, I think the famished feline should stop eating out altogether; she doesn't seem to like any of the restaurants she goes to. And if she doesn't know what an item on a menu is, she's welcome to google it or grow a pair and ask a waiter.
Worth the visit!. I often eat at this restaurant in the wee hours of the morning. It's greatly convenient as it is open until 4am! - The food is always hot, arrives quickly, and the quality of food is superb. Service is sometimes a bit slow after being seated, particularly in relation to drinks, but could be related to the hour in which I am attending.
As a amateur foodie, I have a habit of trying something new on the menu each time I go here, and have yet to be disappointed. I've been over 15 times now.
Price is reasonable. :)
Late Night Destination. Usually on those nights when heavy drinking is involved and a trip home still a couple of hours away, I find myself heading towards U & Me. Why? For some odd reason, going there late at night has a totally different atmosphere, (not to mention Menu) and ambiance.
If you want fast, friendly service when you are sobering up. A room filled with people with the same sentiments as you. Then make this a destination. And get the salt and pepper eggplant. It's the best around.
Big Dim Sums!. The Dim Sum pieces here are really big. And they have a number of very special Dim Sum dishes on the weekends.
This place is deceptively huge...there are 2 back rooms to the restaurant that get used when it gets really busy.
Recently, they have had some health-inspector issues, but those have been fully resolved, and they're back in business and busy as always.
The quality of the dim sum here is great. Menu-style ordering, not carts.
U & Me offers a huge selection of dim sum throughout the day which is unique on it’s own. The dim sum and sweets are excellent, in fact it is one of the best dim sum in the city!
Located on the second floor of a sketchy building in Chinatown, it is THE place to go for late night Chinese (but only if you have lots of $ to spend). Several years ago, the clientele was primarily asian but I have noticed in the last 2 years or so, ther
