Good food. Good service. Really small place. Portions are good, but could have used more meat. Overall pretty decent place for Malaysian food in Calgary.
Went for lunch during my work break. Got the Seafood Laksa soup. Best soup I've had to date and they let you choose how spicy you want it. It's a small restaurant but the staff was very friendly.
I visited here in the summer with my mom who is originally from Malaysia.
The décor is nothing to write home about but it was the food that we were there for.
She ordered the kon lou mee and I ordered nasi lemak with rendang beef. As an appetizer we ordered the roti canai with curry sauce. The kon lou mee was very good, though a larger char siu would have been preferred. The nasi lemak was very good and came on an odd but cute shell plate. I would have preferred a bit more spice from the sambal and the rendang. The roti canai was decent though a bit greasy.
I would visit this place again and try out a few more dishes.
A wonderful little restaurant that offered great Malaysian cuisine. I have been there couple of times and each time I was not disappointed. My favorite got to be their Laksa noodles soup. You can choose your own spice level and level 3 is just right for me. Highly recommended if you are in the neighborhood and would like to try something other than pho.
Nice restaurant with owner from Malaysia serving relatively authentic malaysian food with their own representation of malaysian food. Their laksa is very good and spicy. Stick with level 1 or 2 spice level if you're a rookie. This is not amatier spicy, it's the real deal. Their roti cani is moderate, have had better in Calgary. Their nasi lemak is average. Come for the laksa. Average price and not overpriced
This little restaurant serves up some delicious Malaysian food. The server was super friendly and attentive. They had two for one appetizers so we ordered the chili cheese fries and the coconut shrimp spring rolls. The seafood laska and special assorted laska were flavorful, spicy and very filling. We really enjoyed all the food here, the only thing that would have elevated the laksa is the option between vermicelli and the yellow noodles like Banana Leaf offers.
first time Malaysian food for us and wow was it ever good!! Don't let the location and outside look of the building fool you. The owner/waiter that came to serve us was so nice and he greeted us with a pot of tea. We told him it was our first time and he was kind enough to offer up some suggestions and he even gave us a brief history into Malaysian food as well as his own personal background. He was a true professional and showed his passion of the food. We ordered the Laksa noodle soup and the house noodle soup. Each can be ordered with spice from 0-5 and we selected level 2 for each. The Laksa soup as explained had a curry spice to it and had me worried if I would like it. Let me tell you I have a new respect for Curry, I could not smell it but the taste was out of this world good. It had a good amount of heat but it had such depth to it. The house noodle soup could have had a bit more spice or seasoning but the Waiter fixed that up right away offering me a homemade chili paste to pair with it. When we come again we will order the Laksa at level 1 for my wife and level 2 spice for me. If we try the house noodle again it will be level 3 or 4. We also both liked the noodles better in the Laksa soup. We had the assorted meats in the soup so that we could determine our favorite. I found the texture of the meats (ground and formed) to be a bit odd but the flavor was good. the presentation of both dishes was excellent and came out in a very short amount of time. The amount of food was plenty enough for both of us and we are pretty big eaters.
This place is a true gem! Service is very fast, extremely polite, and attentative. The laksa is delicious and truly brings the tastes of Malaysia! The checked skewers are so flavorful and the sauce is excellent. Will definitely be back lots! Highly recommend this place to anyone looking for authentic Malaysian cuisine.
Very plain exterior gives way to a nicer interior, staff are attentive and the general service was good. Food is presented very nicely and was quite good, staff suggestion of pickles with my dry noodle was spot on.
If you want some cheap(ish) Malaysian food in Calgary, visit Mamak Dang! The tables and seats are simple and resemble what one would see in Malaysian street food courts! Our roti canai was flaky and the curry sauce tasted like Japanese curry. The vegetable laksa was really flavourful! My Indonesian friend liked the beef rendang and curry chicken, and said that it was a different flavour than Indonesian beef rendang. The ais batu campur (i.e. ABC) was sweet and refreshing, and it was good end to a delicious meal.
I saw some pictures and post on zomato and it looked awesome so decided to check out for myself. Just off of McKnight and 12th Street, this place was not too busy on a friday night. Service was friendly and food came out fast. We tried the popcorn chicken, coconut shrimp spring rolls and deep fried pork wontons as appetizers and they were all delicious. I got the special assorted laksa with #4 spicy it had a good heat but I didn't find it too spicy l. I want to try #5 spicy next time. The roti with Rendang beef was super tasty as well so you should try it. The prices are super reasonable. Overall my experience was a pleasant one and I would definitely recommend this place and come back again.
We wanted Malaysian noodle soup and decide to drive a little bit further than the usual place on 32 Ave. We both got the Assorted Laska noodle soup. Has a little bit of everything and shrimps. I got 5 spicy for my soup and it was the perfect spicy. Definitely satisfied our craving. Also got a D1 Malaysian ice coffee, it has the right sweetness and you get alot too.
I give this place a 5 star because everything went right. Friendly staff, good music, good food.
Best roti I have ever had. Excellent food. Did not eat in, ordered out and ate in a nearby park. The dog also fell in love with roti that day.
This restaurant is a 7 out of 10. Service was excellent. We had the coconut shrimp spring rolls to start which smacked of delicious flaked coconut. Then, the beef and chicken plate. The chicken curry was good, but the beef randang was the best of the two. The peanuts, hot sauce and side veg were nice little surprised tucked into the plate.
Great flavours! Love the fact that you can chose the spice intensity. The housemade hot sauce is amazing and you can buy it in jars too! Only downside was my food was a little cold...
First time trying Malaysian food w/ my friends and I must say that this restaurant didn't disappoint us. We started with Coconut Shrimp Spring Rolls, decent size for the price & Satay Chicken Skewer that was really good actually it will go well with rice. For our main dish, we had Nasi Beef & Chicken Combo, Roti w/ Chicken Curry & Special Laksa Noodle Soup. I really love the Beef Reendang that was included in the Nasi Beef & Chicken Combo, it has the right sweetness for me. I was hesitant to try the Roti w/ Chicken Curry as I am not a big fan of curry so at first I was only eating the Roti but then when I tried to dip it to the curry, Man! I love it! Special Laksa Noodle Soup was really good also, love how the noodle was perfectly cooked and the spicyness of the soup. We ended our meal with the Air Batu Campur which was really really good as it is similar to Filipino Halo-halo which is one of my favourite filipino dessert. I will definitely come back and bring my whole family.
Really enjoyed the food here! I'm half Malyasian, and thought the authenticity was pretty good. The young owner is super nice, and was keen to hear what we thought! We've come by several times, as it's not far from us...so will defo be heading back soon!
This little hole-in-the-wall restaurant on 12th Street off McKnight in the N.E. is a hidden jewel in the McCall Industrial Park. I use to work in this area until my company moved. During this time, I have seen this restaurant change from a hamburger/sandwich joint, to a Vietnamese restaurant, then a Malaysian restaurant (Tropical Delight) and finally to Mamak Dang. I'm not sure if there was another restaurant in-between Tropical and Mamak since my company had already moved by then. My first taste of Malaysian food was at Tropical Delight.
Great authentic food, friendly service, and the food came out in a timely manner. The laksa was creamy but not over powering and the broth was very flavorful. The roti was perfectly light and flaky too - I recommend it with the curry sauce! Had the nasi lemak with beef rendang based on other people's recommendations and it did not disappoint! An awesome locally owned restaurant that I will be visiting again :)
Great value, authentic cuisine, and a friendly locally owned restaurant. The food came in a timely manner, our server was friendly, and the total cost was approx. $15/person including a shared appetizer, two entrees, and drinks. I would recommend coming here if you want a casual, home style Malaysian meal.
Ok so this place isn't as good as their neighbour just south and east on 32 age but it's good! House special lhaksa is filling with multiple proteins. The broth could be richer/thicker/creamier. Their roti is good but not as elastic and fluffy as it could be. Standard Asian service so be patient if they are busy. I'd go back for sure it's well priced.
Good place, worth a try!. My husband and I went to Mamak Dang on a Saturday and there wasn't a lot of people there. We ordered a roti canai with curry sauce appetizer, special laksa, and a nasi lemak combination. The chef took our order and was very friendly. The food came out hot and tasty. Very flavorful, and didn't feel salty. The roti canai with curry sauce was by far my favorite dish. The laksa was also very good and our beef in the nasi lemak was tender. The chef came out to talk to us several times and it was fun. He wanted us to tell him what he can do better because he always want to learn and improve. I really appreciate that attitude! Good portions, decent price, friendly staff. The only knock I have against them is the decor....it looks bad with these lacy curtains. Overall, great place, worth a try!
I think its good. Tried the seafood laksa tasted like a seafood chowder never had laksa before so it tasted good to me gonna have to try something else next time I am back.
Thanks for the feedback Redorchid . We will pay more attention on those foods we must improve and the noise in back of the kitchen. We r really sorry for ours problem. We are appciated your time to give us feedback.
Bubble Tea. They are now serving bubble tea, The pearls were nicely done. The service is good, food came up hot and well presented. I would definitely recommend this place.
Easily the best beef randang in the city. And the overall value of the place is tremendous. Just don't expect a "wow" atmosphere, cause although clean, it's very simple.
Great food! Friendly staff & welcoming owner/chef. Just got back from a nice dinner with my girlfriend and her friend. We Started with the shrimp coconut spring rolls. Definitely worth trying, light and tasty. We all ordered the seafood laksa, which had a nice rich broth good amount of noodles and seafood. The spicy level was up to us which was nice and the waiter also brought us some extra sauce if we wanted more heat. At the end of our meal we had a nice chat with the owner/chef. He's definitely passionate about food and explained his take on the fusion of Japanese and Malaysian cooking.
Will be back for sure.
Exceptional food, very authentic. Clean conditions, comfortable setting. Extremely polite and informative staff members. Way to go! Finally a great place to enjoy some Malaysian food.
