Definitely order the Playboy Roll. It's beautifully cooked in a open flame concept in front of you and it tastes amazing. Servers were quick and friendly. Also enjoyed the spicy salmon roll. Overall the sushi is tasty, atmosphere was quaint and lovely, and service was good. The price is rather steep though. Would occasionally come back for a quiet peaceful dinner night with my boyfriend.
Incredible sushi! Maybe one of the best sushi meals I’ve had in years! It might be a little pricy compared to other sushi joints in Calgary but boy it’s worth it! The rolls are huge and you might struggle to fit the whole piece in your mouth but when you do, an explosion of flavors from the tasty rice to the flavorful nori and ending with a mix of vegetables and fish. We ordered the scallop tempura roll which was superb! I he Wave roll was also very good but my favorite was the spicy salmon which came with chunks of fresh farmed salmon! They are very generous with the cuts of salmon they use which is great for us! The black and white roll wasn’t as complicated as the others but super tasty nonetheless! The wild salmon nigiri was just incredible because wild salmon tastes much sweeter than the farmed salmon and it’s lovely! We ordered a Deluxe Sashimi assortment which came with amazing salmon, soft red tuna, incredible white tuna (much nicer than the red tuna), flavorful clams, tender sweet shrimp and soft scallops! The sashimi is perfect and a logical addition to our order!
This used to be my favorite sushi place and frankly it still is but I feel the quality and freshness has come down. I've been going here for 10 years and the original owners and quality were the best but their sushi rolls are still good but they are big, which isn't a bad thing. Can't miss the spicy salmon roll, avalanche roll, spider roll and towa roll and their deep fried rolls. Skip the sashimi as it's fresher elsewhere. Skip the cooked items too. Come for big rolls, leave happy
We stopped in Towa sushi while at lilac festival they have a small section of seating outside which was perfect ! Servers are so kind, all meals come with complimentary salad and miso soup. Prepare yourself though the rolls are seriously massive ! The presentation is amazing, everything is really fresh but the pieces are very big. Each piece had to be eaten in bites so it was not the prettiest thing to watch. The flavours and variation of rolls was really neat I quite enjoyed the Hawaiian roll that had pineapple in it as well. Prices are a little steep but given the size of the rolls and the option of ordering half sizes (4 pieces) it made it a lot better.
Towasushi was in my mind an original sushi spot. The location was in trendy 4th street and the rolls are well priced and original. Taste wise they are consistent and it is a clean environment. Definitely a date spot as you enter downtown.
Their sashimi is very fresh, and this is the one sushi spot that for some reason I tend to order sake. Which I rarely partake in during meals.
Best time to be here is during daytime hours especially Sundays and festival time like during Lilac Fest.
I tried Towa again on my day off this week. I have been a few times. The quality of the Sushi is great but for me the pieces are just too large. I like a bite sized piece, these are great but twice the norm, it tends to break up when trying to eat it. Other items are done to perfection.
We ordered the sashimi salad to start. It was delicious! Very fresh and loved the dressing. The rolls here are HUGE so be careful when ordering. Everything was delicious and we were SUPER full (1 salad and 4 rolls between 4 people). Do not order sashimi here. It's so thin, way too over priced. I also had to dock some points for their service. It was pretty standard, nothing stood out.
An elegant restaurant with delicious sushi. The prices are definitely on the higher end but the portions are quite generous and the food is delicious!
We appreciated the beautifully assembled rolls overflowing with delicious fish! Such an amazing meal! Service was attentive and friendly. Will definitely be back!!!
Prepare yourself for the enormity of these rolls. Take advantage of the multi-round culture of sushi and order a small round and then decide on your second round, because it would be both likely and sacrilegious for you to not be able to eat everything you order at this restaurant. That being said, it's SOOOOOOOOOOOO GOOOOOOOD! Black & white roll is a favorite.
Towa Sushi has been a longstanding local gem that has always been at the forefront of fresh, quality sushi, and definitely one of my favourites as well. One go-to for me has usually been the tempura spicy salmon roll, which is quite generous in size and usually pretty filling to finish by myself. I also find the nigiri and sashimi to be quite fresh and proportionate to the higher prices set at the restaurant. The chirashi bowl is probably the best way to try out an assortment of sashimi over a bed of rice. At $29, it might seem steep, but it really does include a significant amount of sashimi pieces with it. Definitely a place that I crave from time to time!
We came here the other night as we'd heard good things about Towa. The first thing that struck us was just how expensive all the rolls appeared to be. We checked out some reviews and it seemed that the price was justified because the rolls were enormous. This turned out to be completely accurate, and one of the rolls made an excellent breakfast the next day.
We had the Towa udon, the playboy roll, the sashimi cocktail and the mango paradise roll.
The sashimi cocktail had a variety of sashimi (scallops, surf clam, tuna, salmon, prawn) and a delicious lemony soy dip. I was a bit hesitant to eat the raw prawn, but the sweet sauce made it taste absolutely delicious. I would definitely place the quality of the sashimi above cheaper places like Sakana. Really nice quality stuff.
The Towa udon had really chewy fresh noodles, shiitake mushroom, seaweed, a boiled egg and big long pieces of imitation crab. The boiled egg wasn't as good as one typically gets in dishes like ramen, but the broth was delicious and full of flavour and the imitation crab was tender and not your average fake crab sticks.
The mango rolls were covered in unagi and mango sauce with some tempura shrimp and unagi in the middle. It was enormous, and deliciously sweet. Would recommend if you like sweet things and sushi!
The playboy roll came out wrapped in tin foil, which the server then proceeded to set on fire.. See pictures!
The roll was a little spicy, and had delicious smokey shrimp on the top. The roll was delicious, but the presentation was awesome. Well worth it for the spectacle.
The server was great, and the service was super quick. As I mentioned, the price was high for the rolls, but I think it balances out when you see the size of the rolls, and their quality.
This is definitely top tier sushi in Calgary. Would definitely go back again.
One of our favourite sushi restaurants in Calgary. The pieces are large, and the ingredients are very fresh. The combination of flavours the use to put together each roll is fantastic! We always get the same 3 rolls when we go: Avalanche - which does have a sour cream/cream cheese topping. Ocean - which is topped with a scallop and half a shrimp and the Negi toro tuna roll.
Have never been disappointed and have been coming here for years. The sushi is always fresh, quickly prepared, and just plain delicious. Can't get enough of this place. Would recommend to everyone the staff is always friendly.
It's been years since I've been here and I was pretty excited! Towa is known for their rather large rolls and if that wasn't enough, it was buy one roll get the other 50 % off WOO! I believe they do that Tuesday, Thursday and also one more day and I'm not even going to guess in case I'm completely wrong. We got the Towa duck salad (for veggies =]), Salmon and tuna sashimi, unagi roll and their new playboy roll. Everything came out pretty quick! The unagi roll was lovely because I absolutely LOVE avocado and the filling was just BAM avocado and the unagi was delicious Just be aware it is just unagi, rice and avocado pretty much simple, but I liked it. The play boy roll came out wrapped in aluminum foil and then the waitress sets the sides on fire for it to cook for a bit. This roll was SO delicious and the rice to filling ratio was on point (my standard anyway). The tuna and salmon sashimi were tasty, some pieces were still frozen. The salad was a delightful surprise. It had a lot of pieces of duck and the pairing with the cantaloupe made me crave some prosciutto. Defrickinlightful (pardon my jargon).
We ordered Towa from skipthedishes.com tonight and our order surprisingly came earlier than all the other restaurants we've ordered from before. The sushi came fresh like it was from the restaurant itself! The Towa udon was quite deliciously unique. We thoroughly enjoyed everything. The creamy scallop, seared salmon and spicy tuna rolls are my faves!
Sushi rolls are HUGE! It was very good though, just a little hard to eat..... Wish they were smaller.... Tempura was very good, very crispy and not greasy
Solid option for sushi. I rate this just behind my true sushi love Zipang, but the quality here is good. The rolls are a little extreme in size, but find them consistently good. The ambiance is nice and it's nice to sit on the patio and people watch.
Towa Sushi is truly one of the best sushi places in Calgary. What notably defines this restaurant are the larger portions which also taste delicious. It's rolls are packed with fresh meat or veggies, and it doesn't feel like it is being filled with unnecessary amounts of rice or what not to save money. They give you a very generous amount of quality ingredients. As someone who regularly eats Japanese food and has been to Japan, this place impresses me. The sizes aren't "traditional" but who's going to complain when you just get a better deal for your dollar? The quality of the food is great and the service and atmosphere are good as well. The price is AMAZING for what you get, particularly for families this place is a budget choice for sushi compared to other places because their price:portion ratio is very solid. Parking can be difficult, but it is expected when you eat along 4th Street so that is something to keep in mind. I've been here many times, and it is very consistent with their quality and service. I would strongly recommend this restaurant to any sushi lover who wants to eat more and save money too!
The rolls are HUGE! Good quality sushi, although a bit hard to eat since you have to cut it or bite it.... Will definitely recommend this place and will come back!
It delicious! Wonderful. The Playboy Sushi if wonderful and Delicious!
Best sushi in Calgary. The foods are really nice. I would absolutely go back again.
Best in town. Tried yesterday, absolutely delicious.
Highly recommend "Play boy roll", sizzlered with alcohol and topped with prawns, very special and never seen elsewhere.
Towa Sushi is unique in a way where they specialize in large, special rolls. I highly recommend the Towa Special Roll as the amount of fish in this is mind-blowing! Easily the best thing on their menu. Only downside is that because of the portion size, you'll most likely end up only ordering 1 roll/pp so you won't be able to try too many of them! Unless you're me and you order more regardless :) Definitely a good place to bring out of town guests too!
Decent. Mouth exercises are required to eat any of the rolls or else you'll get locked jaw. The rolls are crammed full of ingredients that were pretty fresh and tasty but seriously such a chore to eat. Our server forgot to put in order of tempura but seriously, we didn't need it, since we were carrying our stomaches from the three rolls and sushi assortment between the four of us. Something we immediately opened our appetites for was the tempura icecream, which is a dish that is pretty difficult to get right, so while it was refreshing, that gummy batter meld with the icecream is not my favourite dessert. Attentive service and speedy food service, we were in and out within an hour.
Gigantic rolls with good price. The rolls are on the lighter side, fresh tasting and gigantic. I find the price very reasonable. Service is so-so. Waiters seem not happy. Overall I find this place average. I won't mind to go once in a while but not my top favourite for sushi.
Slowly becoming a regular customer at TOWA Sushi, have been there at least 5 times for the past month. Service is always great, servers always go out of their way to accommodate you. Food and price are good and portion is big.
It's a fantastic place with great food and great ppl. Giant sushi, with an extreme satisfaction when it melted in the mouth. The quality of the fish and seafood is wonderful. Definitely will go there again! Heard the play boy roll is fun. Hope to try it next time.
It's changed.. Have been frequently going to Towa for the last few years but recently (maybe under new ownership or management?), it has a totally different vibe to it. The food hasn't changed and is still good (thank god) but the service and atmosphere of the restaurant definitely has changed, which does matter to some.
Awesome restaurant!! I love this place!! Brought my co-workers here for lunch and now it's listed as the top sushi restaurant among all of us!!! The servers are polite. I've heard that the ownership changed but I've noticed the staff were still the same group of people. The food is delicious and they are huge... The price ain't cheap but one roll is probably good enough for a regular appetite girl. That's how big the roll is...I've visited this place a couple times in the past two months and every time I noticed some improvement. I think this will become one of my top go-to places for girls night out or friends gathering!!!!
Yum. Amazing sushi and lots of choices - Check their hours before going, I have gone a few times and they were closed.
Good presentation. Nice taste. Service is ok. Really like the Tempura ice cream.
Love it!! Fresh sashimi that melts in your mouth!
Tastey big sushi for good price. Sushi are tastey and presentation very good. Sometimes a bit too big for my gf's mouth, but hey that's what she said =P. Nice atmosphere too, except im not a fan of their tables they are quite big and I feel like a bit too far from ppl sitting across me. Then again they do serve with large plates so it works.
Salmon tataki are terrific, we always come back for it.
Good sushi!!. One of the best sushi places in Calgary!~
Chockful of Salmon. 12 years in Calgary and I still hadn't tried Towa Sushi - it was almost sacrilegious! So on a Wednesday night, a friend of mine and I had a catch-up session at the sushi restaurant I had heard so much about.
We ordered the black and white roll, the spicy salmon roll, several pieces of salmon sashimi and the agedashi tofu. I was a little worried about whether that would be enough food for the both of us as we were both starving - but that worry quickly disappeared as the dishes came out!
The spicy salmon roll was stuffed with delicious chunks of salmon. The spicy sauce on top of the roll was the perfect complement to the richness of the fish while the black and white roll satisfied my need for a crunchy roll. The avocado slices within the roll were the perfect size so you could taste the avocado but not have it overwhelm the roll. The crunchiness of the tempura pieces was the perfect mate for the creaminess of the avocado.
For the next time, I would have done without the agedashi tofu so I could save more room for their delicious rolls. Overall, for the amount of salmon alone, Towa Sushi has definitely earned its place as a staple Calgary sushi restaurant and will remain as one of my top sushi choices! Two enthusiastic thumbs up!
Freshest Fish in town. We are raw fish snobs. Towa has by far the freshest salmon and white tuna we have had in Calgary. We have been coming here as regulars for the last three years, recommended to us by a friend who lived in Japan.
The secret to the large portions is to cut them in half with chopsticks. The fish is so fresh and tender, we can cut it easily with chopsticks.
With the busy turnover, we trust this fish. We have never had a fishy piece yet. There have been numerous time we have seen the sushi chef with a fresh whole salmon on the bar, getting it ready to slice up.
The Negi-toro roll is also one of our favorites - simple raw fish, wrapped in rice and seaweed with a generous sprinkling of green onion. Mmmm.
Love it. Been coming here for years now.... Food is always fresh and tastes amazing! Best sushi in town. They know to make great sushi. Would recommend to anyone. Hope this review is helpful
The portion sizes are really good. They have excellent salmon here too. I really enjoyed the food and would go again. Try it out!
Always a good time here. Towa is one of my favourite restaurants and having been a long-time patron, I decided I should finally write a review about them. It also gave me a reason to gather up some friends and head down to Towa so enjoy a good meal. :o)
The restaurant is nestled in the heart of the trendy and popular neighborhood, Mission. The first impression upon entering is that restaurant is modern and cozy. The décor also has an IKEA feel as you will likely recognize some of the iconic IKEA pieces in the restaurant. The lighting is also a bit dim which can make reading the menu slightly difficult, especially when it’s dark outside. The staff are real Japanese people, which I love, but that also makes communicating a bit onerous as their English is not always the best.
Towa doesn’t take reservations and can get busy on weekend nights during prime dining hours. They are really good about taking down your number so you can take a stroll around the neighborhood and they’ll call you when your table is ready.
Towa is known for its sushi rolls: the fact that they’re larger than your typical sushi restaurant and also the unique combinations and varieties. The menu features 20+ different “contemporary” rolls along with seasonal specials. The rolls range from $11 – 18 but when you see the large portion sizes, you’ll understand why. My favourite is the spicy salmon roll with the rainbow roll not far behind. The rolls are always fresh with an appropriate ratio of rice to filling.
I’ve read reviews of people lamenting over the difficulty of eating the rolls due to their large size. I honestly have never had that much difficulty eating their rolls. I wouldn’t worry too much about it falling apart since that’s what good sushi is all about anyway!
Some other Towa favourites are: agedashi tofu, assorted tempura, black and white roll, and the unagi roll. And if you still have room afterwards, definitely go for the tempura green tea ice cream. I’ve had it numerous times and it’s made to perfection with a thin crispy batter on the outside which juxtaposes the cool soft green tea ice cream on the inside.
Another successful meal at Towa!
Best place to go for speciality rolls. This place has the best speciailty rolls if you are looking for something different. Rolls seems pricier but its because they are big!! so good!
You get what you pay for. Okay, first off I want to say that I am in no way rich or wealthy by anyone's standards. There are those people who wouldn't flinch at a $50 bill for two people at a sushi place. The food here is amazing. I always get the cubed tofu salad and split some sushi with my gf. The portions are HUGE so don't order more than two selections if you have two people. It is premium priced because you get top quality sushi. If you can afford it, this is a great spot.
Lots of variety. Yummy!!!
Tasty. I haven't been here for a while, but the portions are still as large as I remember. We ordered a couple of dishes per person which would usually be good at most places and we were stuffed. The sushi is delicious, it wasn't hard to get a seat and the service was fast. Good reason to go on a Thursday night.
Great Sushi and friendly service. Great sushi. The portion sizes are huge so make sure you don't over order. The calamari and baby spinach salad is so refreshing.
Amazing sushi!!. From the minute you step in, you notice how uptodate and modern this place is
although the sushi is pricy, it makes up for it with its size and taste. YUM!
Love it. What sucks about this place is that the first time I went here, I couldn't find it because it looks like a house rather than a restaurant, so basically I drove right passed it. Anyways the other sucky part is that the wait. They don't take reservations so we always have to wait in line and because it's so popular, there was always a wait line. Anyways the food is great here, the portions are large, and when I say large, even the sushi rolls are big. I had the sashimi here too and they were really fresh and really good. The interior of this place is very modern, not very Japanese themed but it's nice. The servers are nice as well, sometimes when it gets too busy, food comes out a bit late.
Overall, I like it here just it's hard to find parking so I don't go there too often as I should.
Most Excellent. The black and white roll is to die for.
Great service, delish rolls - super huge though... one is more than enough, so go with friends and share!!
Best Japanese restaurant in Calgary. Great food, friendly servers& great location.
Towa is back and better than ever.. A few years ago- I'm thinking it was maybe 2003- a new sushi place called Towa Sushi opened on 4th Street SW (aka "Mission") here, and it was hugely successful owing to the fact that it was the first place in Calgary that did what might be called "LA-style" maki. Huge rolls with huge fillings, too much to stuff into one's sushi hole at once unless you have my gaping mouth. It was really exceptional at the time and like I say was very successful. Over the years, this style of sushi has been taken on by pretty much every new place that's opened in Calgary and there's nothing remarkable about big, over-the-top maki anymore. You can find examples of it at both Japanese-owned and non-Japanese-owned places, and in fact, though Towa is Japanese through and through, the most complex rolls are from the Korean ouvre, not the Japanese. Koreans call this "fusion" sushi, it's roll- (not nigiri-) centred and like I say you can find it all over town, at El's Japanese Fusion, Sushi & Co, Midori, Globefish, Sukiyaki House, Sushi Motto, and as I say pretty much every place that opened after, say, 2004 in Calgary.
So I don't go to Towa that often anymore, because it's no longer that unique. But I did last Friday, and it was EXCELLENT. I got two rolls, one each spicy tuna and "veggie." I remember these as being massive but also very rice-heavy. Well, both were massive, but neither had a particularly large amount of rice. In fact the outside layer of rice on both was quite thin. The fillings? Huge. Spicy tuna had maybe 90% of its big diameter comprising tuna- really good, clean-tasting tuna. The veggie roll was similar: Somewhat thin "shell" of rice stuffed with avocado, tomato, lettuce and red bell pepper. Two rolls were about $26 with tax but before tip. This is pricey for lunch but I assure you that for most of you, that is, most non-gluttons, these two rolls would be too much food for one person. Order carefully.
It's so nice to see Towa back where it once was, as one of the best sushi restos in town. In 2003, this wasn't a challenge. In 2011, it's a monstrous challenge, what with the 70 or so sushiyas in Calgary now. Kudos to them; I'll be back.
Great sushi. We can wait to return for more. Best tempura, nice miso and great looking and tasting sushi.
Best in Calgary. Fresh ingredients, giant comtemporary rolls, saucy and super tender chicken teriyaki. I love this place.
Hands down the best california roll i've ever had. My wife even likes this place and she doesn't even eat sushi.
Don't eat fish? Have chicken sushi!. Everyone I know loves sushi. I don't eat cooked fish, let alone raw, and often feel left out with friends or forced to order the always disappointing overcooked Teriyaki Chicken and rice on the side in a sushi restaurant.
Towa has a teriyaki chicken roll that they make to look just like sushi, and it's fantastic! Here I can join my cultured sushi eating friends and not feel left out. I also don't like seaweed (clearly sushi is not going to be part of my repertoire, ) but Towa can make the chicken rolls in an egg wrap that tastes awesome! Most sushi restaurants can't cater to this kind of picky, but Towa makes the cut.
