Review Phil's Restaurants - Calgary

Excellent service and excellent food today. Everything was cooked perfectly and I could not believe the quality of the food. It’s been over 20 years since I’ve eaten here, and this is now my new go to restaurant. Their prices were absolutely excellent and again I can’t say enough about how hard the servers worked today. We really appreciated everything they did for us and can’t thank them enough. Manager on duty was just so nice and deserves a shout out to her and her team.

Phil's is a classic, you can't go wrong. I got the Bacon (3) with 2 eggs (over medium), with chunky hash browns and brown toast. Fast, friendly, good prices, good coffee. There's a church nearby so be mindful of after-church breakfast/brunch rushes, but the parking lot is decently big, so it probably won't be a problem!

This place is amazing! Despite it being full on a Saturday morning, the service was excellent and I was amazed! My breakfast (back bacon, eggs, shoestring hash browns, toast and a POT of coffee) was perfect and hot. My waitress (Carina) was right on top of everything, friendly and attentive. I wish I could give bonus stars!

It's our go-to for breakfast because it's consistently good. If there's ever an issue they are quick to fix it. You can tell they appreciate your business. I'd stick to breakfast though, it's what they do best.

Love Phil's.... It reminds me of Home and those Beef Chubbies.... Yum

Our server Meagan was amazing. When I voiced an honest opinion management took it to heart and found a way to rectify the situation. This is a second visit. Hubby said that he'd return again. Hear, here.

Phil's was excellent. Service was prompt and friendly. Food was good. A bit of an overload on the hollandaise sauce, the shredded hash browns were terrific and my easy over eggs were done to perfection. Pancake came with a side of whipped butter - delish! Coffee was flowing! They leave the caraf at your table so you're never out. Prices were great. Washrooms were clean. Highly recommend Phil's for a sit down breakfast spot.

Phils what can I say ... not a usual place for me to frequent. Thought I would order something safe, BLT it came with lots of bacon which was nice. And a side salad that was not overly fresh but edible. Server was amazing, kind friendly and fast.

As a senior born in Calgary, I have frequented your restaurant since it opened on the north hill and Miller was singing there. Over the many decades as a regular customer, I have been more than pleased with your food and service; however, I have encountered difficulty with your Kingsland location over the past few months. Your beef dip has been my favourite for decades, but recently when this was served on a very stale bun and was not enjoyable - I did not say anything the first time as I figured it was just a mistake; however, it happened again a few weeks later and was not enjoyable. The next time I visited (a couple of weeks ago) I mentioned to the server that the buns were stale the last 2 times I was there and she made sure I had a very fresh bun and I thoroughly enjoyed a delicious meal. I returned with friends the following week and made mention to the server that I would appreciate a fresh bun rather than a stale one ... I could not believe that I was served the STALEST bun EVER - I could not even scoop out the inner part and it remained unchewable even after soaking it in the gravy. I mentioned this to the server but the only response I received was "it is toasted, that is why it is hard'. This is a lame excuse for serving food that is unsuitable for human consumption and I will NEVER order your beef dip again as I am sure this has a lot to do with the 'bad attitude' of the so-called cook at Kingsland location. I will probably go back to this location; however, I will make sure I order something that does not involve STALE week-old bread and that is guaranteed fresh. I am really disappointed in the negative reaction of the cook and the server.

I've been here 3 times now. I've been looking for a good breakfast restaurant in the area and this appears to be as good as it gets around the here. The prices feel a little high but I haven't found a good breakfast place anywhere in Calgary that you can get out for less that $40 for two. The service is about normal, nothing special, but not bad either. My overall view of the restaurant is also basically nothing special as well.

I've been going to this Phil's for years and know exactly what to expect. Not sure who they've hired in the kitchen but today's breakfast was a pile of crappola. Totally raw uncooked onions and unmelted cheese in the omelette, bone dry toast and brutally burnt hash browns. Gross all around

Have only been to this location a few times. Used to frequent the one in Banff when we went until it was replaced by a Chinese food place (which was stupid and unnecessary in my opinion) their hash browns are very tasty and their eggs Benedict is good. Wait staff have always been friendly.

This place is pretty cool, but it definitely feels like you stepped back about 30 years when you enter the diner. However, it is always busy, and that's because they serve good, cheap, no frills food. In our late 20's, we were some of the youngest people in the place. However, we've been twice now, so that speaks for itself. If you want a big sized, good tasting breakfast, without anything fancy, this is your place.

You'll always find solid meals at Phil's. It's been here since I attended junior high at the school that used to be across Glenmore, and things haven't changed at Phil's since then. There are a few more things on the menu, but it's good to see they haven't changed things a whole lot.

It's standard diner fare, and you'll mostly find older folks and hungover college-aged kids in there (especially on Saturday and Sunday mornings) but the service is always quick and the food is good and hearty.

Great breakfast restaurant. Had chorizo eggs Benny was so delish! Just your typical chain restaurant that's always busy and has a decent breakfast!

This place used to be pretty decent. It was never anything amazing, but a nice little diner. Over the last few years I've felt that the food quality has gone down, and now it's mediocre at best. In terms of staff, the waitresses are usually okay..nothing great, nothing bad. Some are attentive, and some are very lazy.

Always a great breakfast stop. A Calgary classic. Great service, friendly staff. There can be waits but that's what happens at good places. Get the chubby sausages. Yum! Family run and a better place to go to over the humpty and Denny's of the world. Nothing totally uniquely special, just honest good breakfast.

Quality and comfort!. I went here with my boyfriend this evening for the first time. It was dead inside, literally only one other table full in the entire restaurant. I was going to get a breakfast related meal but saw all the vegetarian dishes they offered and went with the roasted vegetable quesadilla. It had A LOT of fresh veggies in it and a good portion of cheese. It was very good and filling. Only complaint would be some of the veggies were chopped large and it was very hard to handle and fell apart as soon as you picked it up. Other than that very delicious. My boyfriend got eggs Benedict and said it was on par. The portions are good and price is fair. Very little wait time. Nice staff. I will go back in the near future and try something else as they have a large menu.

Poor service. I go to Phil's regularly and think their food is awesome, but we ordered take out recently and experienced very poor service. Two dishes we ordered were not in the bag, as we discovered when we got home. I called to let them know and they were very rude about it, trying to demand I drive all the way back to fix it that moment. Overall, unimpressed.

Inconsistent food quality. We started going to phils as it was close to the hospice my mom was at. For awhile we had just great food and since then it has seriously declined. The hashbrowns which are our favorite may or may not be cooked very well. Some days it so overdone you can't eat it. Toast comes out burnt and dry and the kids pancakes are either so over cooked the kids can't eat them or almost raw. I honestly worry that this resturant will go the way of Banff's location. GONE!! It might be a good thing if someone actually read some of these comments and looked into quality of food and consistency of the quality as well.

One more thing the last time we went our food was a disaster and we found out from wait staff that the cook showed up to work late and very hungover. His worked showed it and lucky we found out or we wouldn't even consider ever going back. We will wait a few months and give one more the manager time to sort some staffing and quality issues out if it doesn't change then sorry but we will go find other places to dine.

Steady decline in food quality and 20% increase in price over the last year. I had been going to Phil's for breakfast regularly for a couple of years. I was very happy with the great service staff, the price was reasonable, and the food quality was good. The service staff are constantly kind, prompt and considerate. Over the past six months there have been two separate price hikes which have added 20% to the cost of my standard order. As food costs and overheads rise, restaurants must raise their prices to maintain margins, however a 20% increase in less than a year seems excessive. In addition to the rising prices, the food quality which had been good to excellent over most of the previous year, has dropped at an alarming rate. Specifically the shredded potato hash browns which used to be cooked to a crispy tasty golden brown have been burnt on the outside, and mush on the inside on my last several visits. I am currently reluctant to return, and I am looking for a new breakfast place.

Regular Customer. I go to Phil's at least once a week for breakfast before heading to work. The food is always of good quality, the service is prompt and friendly and the place is always clean. It costs me about $14.00 (tip extra) complete with a big carafe of coffee. I doubt you could get a better place to go in Calgary for a standard breakfast that you don't feel rushed to finish.

Good food, decent price, quick service!! Come here regularly, and as long as you avoid the after church Sunday rush, will get seated right away and never have to wait long for your food.
I highly recommend their Eggs Benedict

Uncooked pancakes, kids burger burnt to a puck, nuked burger buns dried hard & rude manager! Outburst OMG! When we had enough of the place & time!

Very basic and somewhat pricey, considering.

First time - Impressed. First time visiting Phil's, after driving by it a few times. Thought there would be a wait as it was super busy looking, but they sat us right away. Very friendly service and very fast timing. Really happy with our first time! We will be back!

Great Stuff. Building was old as Calgary, place was clean, serving staff really friendly, food was good. Kids were welcome. we went on a sunday morning, the turnaround was super fast. suggest if you are going to get there before 9AM crowds started rolling in

I grew up coming to this location and recently revisited with my own little fam. It's still as busy as it always was. Is verging on a greasy spoon cafe, which I enjoy because the food is yummy. They are more family/baby oriented now (or maybe I just didn't notice as a teenager?), and along with the high chair your little one gets a bib, dippy cup and some toys to play with while there. You also can get a free baby plate consisting of mashed potatoes, peas and gravy. My 18 month old daughter enjoyed this. Kids under 8 get a free plate of silver dollar pancakes which are a good size and filled up my 6 year old son. I had the clubhouse which was yummy with some tasted salted fries and hubby had breakfast which is still consistently good. The portions are all a good size and we left with full bellies.

On the fence.... Went with 9 friends for a brunch and they got us in quickly even though the restaurant was busy. Drinks were kept filled and service was prompt. Everyon'es food looked great although I found the crepes to be lacking. The filling was basically non-existant I ordered the california crepe and I couldnt see or taste any granola next to the 2 slices of banana, strawberry and 1 slice of apple. A friend ordered the minced ham and chese and had the same issues. All of the other plates looked full though. If we ever go again I am not going to bother with the crepes I would rather go to Cora's and get a large one filled with fresh fruit.

Favorite breakfast spot, food is always good and plentiful with endless coffee. Breakfast served all day. Lunch and dinner items are basic diner fare

Basic Good Food, Cooked the Way you Want It. Phil's has been around for a long time but I hadn't been there for years.

Our family was craving a basic plate of eggs and accompaniments - nothing fancy...so we thought of Phil's.

Phil's did not disappoint. It was delightful to see that Phil's takes their breakfasts seriously, having many variations on the basic breakfast plate. Do you want your hash browns chunky or shredded? Do you want brown or whole wheat toast? How would you like your eggs done? What would you like with your eggs, Pork links or chubbies, Chicken or turkey links? Side or Back Bacon? Would you like your poached eggs soft, medium or hard?

We joked with our server that we sure had to answer a lot of questions just to get our breakfasts. We could basically customize our plates any way we wanted...many things are also offered as additional sides.

Everything was cooked just right - or should I say EGGSactly as we ordered! The table was outfitted with a selection of jams and jellies and three kinds of syrup to go with Phil's signature pancakes. Also a nice touch for a breakfast place is our own carafe of coffee at the table. It's so nice not to have to wait for someone to refill your coffee.

The only negative I must add is that the ambient noise in the side of the restaurant we were in was deafening..There wasn't any music playing, but the acoustics in there are made miserable with many hard surface walls. The sound of the table chatter bounces around but not much gets absorbed. So we found ourselves shouting just to hear each other across our table. It's like being in a traffic jam - you don't like it - but realize you are part of the problem.

Phil's is nevertheless a great place for family dining - good basic food cooked the way you want it and at a still decent price.

I had the Monte Cristo sandwich, both boys had burgers, Jordan had the l’il spaghetti and Autumn ordered pancakes and was over joyed when the waitress brought her three different syrups to choose from.

Phil’s Restaurant on Glenmore Trail has always been a hot breakfast, brunch and lunch spot here in Calgary. Phil’s offers some of the best breakfast and brunch for the price, and is a top contender for my hungry business any day of the week. Atmosphere – 8/10 Service – 10/10 Food – 8/10 Atmosphere and Service One thing I always love about Phil’s Restaurant on Glenmore Trail is how quickly they manage to seat you regardless of how busy it is. I have visited Phil’s before on a Sunday with a party of 10 and was seated in 10 minutes, making it a great place to go if you don’t have reservations. Phi’s is also a great family dining spot with kid’s menus and toddler seats. To top it all off, every server I’ve ever had at the restaurant are the best at what they do… no complaints whatsoever! Our Orders West Coast Omelette – $12.50 – onion marmalade, cream cheese, smoked sockeye salmon, grilled tomatoes topped with hollandaise sauce – I must say t

Phil's has existed in Calgary since the 1960's, and it's not hard to figure out why they've stayed in business for so long. They offer good, simple, hearty meals that will appeal to just about every age and demographic that I can think of.

Your basic breakfast joint that isn't Denny's. I think what makes Phil's different is that they have better combination's of your typical breakfast items. And if there isn't one that you like, you can always make substitutions. I had the beef traveler's s
