We finally found our ‘go to’ sushi place here in Calgary!!! We tried so many places and we’re disappointed until coming across Momo-Yama. It seriously has the best tempura - remains crispy until you’ve finished the whole dish. Highly recommend the fujiyama roll (especially if you like a little kick) and the magicarp roll. The fish is fresh and the service is amazing! The food is pricey, but honestly, it’s worth it. I’ve never rated a restaurant 5 stars, but this one deserves it!
Honestly nothing negative to say for my first experience! I grabbed a late lunch/early dinner and the server and sushi chef greeted me warmly and continued to impress. I tried the shrimp sunumono which was the perfect balance of sweet and vinegary. The highlight of the meal was the Happy Spoons (scallop in ponzu sauce and fish eggs). The name says it all. I also had a delicious piece of uni and the Samurai Roll that is a top roll in the city in my opinion.
We had such an awesome lunch here! Everything was delicious 😋We tired the soft shell crab which was coated in the most delicious batter and cooked to perfection. You get plenty of crab with dish as well. Of course I had the beef tataki and it was a generous size, very tasty sauce and beautiful presentation. The samurai roll was a hit and is served with fried lotus root on the side. Sashimi was incredibly fresh tasting and was a nice size. Overall the food and service was brilliant!! The restaurant itself is quite plain and small but if you want high quality Japanese cuisine, this is the place to come 👍🏼
Great local sushi restaurant. I recommend the dragon and unagi rolls. The rest of the menu is pretty good from what we had tried. I recommend if in the area.
Haven't been here in along time. Service was friendly and waiter/waitress check one our numerous time to refill our tea, ask if we want more ginger and how we liked our food. The spicy salmon was different from other restaurant that usually do the spicy mayo on top, here they do a mixture of chopped up spicy salmon with hint of sesame oil. Different but tasty. I really like the unique coating of the Phoenix roll and the combination of fried squid legs, salmon, avocado and tobiko. My husband got the bbq pork ramen and he said the pork was very tender and overall it was really good. I also tasted the broth and it was flavourful. Would come back again since it's close in our neighborhood
New owners. So a surprise when I ate there. Does anyone know where the original owner went ? Ok sushi, but not the same. The sushi and sashimi special was good portions and nicely presented. Agedashi tofu coating was too tough and not tender. Two adults costs about $70. I can go elsewhere for same price, such as Misato. Won't be back.
The new owner has created some amazing rolls! I love the magicarp roll, their tempura is very delicious compared to other places as well as their ramen! Would definitely recommend this place :)
We have been to this place for the past 8 years and each time the sushi is nothing short of outstanding. The rolls are fantastic and the cuts are delightful! Just a great little place that looks like a bit of a whole in the wall but it's really worth a visit or more! Our favourite sushi in the city'
The food tasted great! It's a bit expensive though. The service is very prompt and timely too. The sushi was freshly made for us and the tempura was also made for us.
This place is legit. We've ordered take out from Momo-yama many times in the last few months. High-quality sushi and friendly staff. The chef is really friendly and knows what he's doing! Sashimi and sushi portions are generous and we haven't been disappointed yet. Only change I'd like is better agadashi tofu, it could be crispier, felt it was a little lack lustre compared to other spots. Nonetheless, this place is great and we're glad we found it close to our home!
Finally got John to come with me to Momo-Yama! One of my favourites! Always came here when I lived with my cousins way back when. Also, Ryan joined us today!. Tuna and Salmon Sashimi- 4pc tuna and 4pc salmon. All the sashimi pieces were great. The toro was John’s favourite because it just melts in the mouth and is so full of flavour. Not as delicious as the otoro from the Goro and Gun Blue fin Tuna event but still good >=]. The salmon had great texture and flavour. The tuna was good, but definitely wasn’t as good as the toro.

The servers and staff are so welcoming and friendly right when you enter the door. It's a quaint restaurant hidden in a plaza. So onto the food! We got the Momo Yama house special roll. It is massive!!! If you've ever been to Misai and got their special roll it is the same size as that. However I was still able to eat it in one bite =P. It was so bountiful with different pieces of fish, tam ago and avocado. The beef Tataki had a lot of pieces and it had a lovely sear to it. After that, the special scallop, spicy scallop, Cajun prawn and dynamite roll arrived. The dynamite roll was also larger then the average roll. The crust on the shrimp tempura gave it substance and texture and was quite tasty. The spicy scallop was more sweet than spicy to me, but an after taste of spiciness lingers on the tongue. The Cajun prawn had good texture (in my opinion) and you could taste the prawns. The special scallop was just delicious, our favourite of the three. With the special and spicy scallop, the scallops were large chunks so yummy. Overall, I really enjoyed it even though I haven't been here in ages. I think I over hyped it for John so he thought it was okay but better than most.
Fantastic sushi, but it's a bit on the higher end of sushi pricing. The selection for rolls is a bit limited, but their nigiri and sashimi selection has good variety. Overall it has a very authentic atmosphere and the food quality is top notch.
I ordered the deluxe sushi combo. Of the bunch, the salmon nigiri was my favourite. Smooth and buttery, the salmon was sweet and nicely marbled.
Nothing but good stuff to say about this place!. This is one of the places I regularly visit when I crave sushi! The service is excellent and the food is delicious and reasonably priced. My favorites are the volcano roll, chicken katsu don (super juicy, delicious, big portion), and the beef tataki is the best in the city according to my boyfriend!
Great hole in the wall. Having spent the last few years living on the west coast, I've been spoiled with some good sushi places that aren't too expensive. With that in mind, I wasn't expecting to find a place I'd recommend for sushi in landlocked Alberta, but I can heartily say that Momoyama is good. They had quality salmon in the salmon and avocado roll, good agedashi tofu, a good chicken terriyaki plate with sizzling veggies, and their yam and dynamite rolls were massive, and tasty.
I have to accept that a sushi roll in Calgary is going to be $2.50 more than on the west coast, so putting that aside it's great quality for the price you pay. Momoyama's a place I could recommend even if it were in Vancouver (priced accordingly), where it'd fit in quite nicely amongst many good sushi places. But in Calgary, it's a treat to find somewhere that's up to snuff.

Great Spot!. I frequently visit sushi restaurants here in town. You can really tell the quality from one to another, in addition to the service you recieve. Momo-Yama has amazing service, with generous portions of sushi, not to mention great tasting! The past few times we visited, the quality was by far, above the vast majority of sushi restaurants. We highly recommend !! :-)
Go to place for sushi. This place gets crazy busy on the weekends. Twice I've watched them turn away dozens of people for both the restaurant and takeout because they were running at maximum. I like the rolls here because when I get rolls I do not like them to be hidden under so much sauce and mayo that they look like Jackson Pollock was doing the bottle work. Their house made spicy sauce (free of mayo and sriracha) is excellent and doesn't overpower the taste of the fish. The seafood tastes fresh and has the appropriate texture. Definitely will be going back. The service is good or bad depend on who you get as a waitress.
Looks old/run-down/small but it is ANYTHING BUT!. This is what I call a hidden gem - low prices, high quality food, good service. You can't ask for much more. I'm so surprised at how good everything tastes and how much they give you for the price they ask for. I hope they are making money by selling in large quantities and with high customer traffic.
I actually liked the spicy tuna roll and it was actually spicy and huge. Jeez. I was overwhelmed and taken aback by it. The unagi roll was really good too - not fishy at all or overtaken by teriyaki sauces.

Tasty. Great sushi rolls.... very creative (unlike many other sushi restaurants). Would happily go back.
Went here with my boyfriend two nights ago, arrived at 8:30 (sign says closes at 9) so we were glad to have made it for sushi as we were running errands all day and tried to come as early as possible and were hungry. There were two servers (one obviously with a more 'rushed' attitude and one who was more calm and kind). After we enter, the rushed lady flips over teh open sign and let us know that they have closed but will let us dine in. I think she could have been a little more hospitable with this but we were glad we could get sushi i guess... Anyways so we ordered Chirashi sushi, the dragon roll, the BC roll and a kapa roll for two people. The sushi was great, wonderful presentation for the rolls especially and we had a good time. When we were leaving the sushi chef gave us a smile and thank you, and that left a good impression. Would return and next time will try to come earlier so won't feel bad for coming at 'last call' for food.
One of my favorite sushi restaurant. Small but cozy, great service, food is excellent and most of them all the price is cheap!!!!!
Excellent Quality. I have been going to Momo-Yama for years. It's my boyfriend's and my favorite place to get sushi. It's a tiny place but the service is always great. The thing that keeps me coming back to Momo-Yama is the quality of the fish, and one dish in particular: the Tuna Tataki. There are about 10 thick, super fresh and tender slices of fatty tuna served on top of ponzu sauce (like a lighter soya sauce infused with citrus) with shredded daikon, green onion and a spicy yam mash. I seriously cannot get enough of this dish and order it every time I go. If you love tuna and you go, you have to try it! The sushi itself is excellent too. It's nothing pretty to look at but the amount and quality of fish will always keep me coming back here.
Hidden Gem. This place is great. It is small and sort of looks like a dive from the outside but the food is unreal. I always get the chicken katsu and my gf gets sushi. It is not overly expensive and the portions are fairly large. The sushi guy there is a blast too, very friendly.

Went for date night and was pleasantly surprised at the quality of this small sushi house. Reasonably priced $1-2 per piece, with some specialty rolls at a bit higher cost. Very good spicy tuna roll and House special handcone. Very friendly and helpful staff. Small w/bar and only few booths and tables, and can get cold if you sit near the door in winter! Looking forward to next visit!
My all time favourite!. The sushi is incredibly delicious, made fresh to order, good price, super friendly service, and nice atmosphere. It is operated by super friendly people who work hard and do a great job. No other sushi place compares to momoyama!

Love it! I'd definitely be a regular if I could ever get a table in the evening. The single chef they have is the happiest Korean I've seen in my life! I love the guy! Service is definitely as good as the delicious food. I recommend the salmon kama and spicy tuna.
Great casual sushi joint. Just took my girlfriend here (Thurs @ 6) and it was really good. It's small, but we got a larger table right away. The food is very good. We had Negatoro and California rolls, teriyaki salmon and battered chicken. The service really sells this place. The servers are friendly and energetic. With 2 servers and 9 tables, we got lots of attention. $45, including 15% tip. We'll definitely be back.
A hidden secret in the SW. Wow! I am really impressed by the sushi at Momo-Yama. The rolls are HUGE! Honestly, if you order more than 2-3 selections, you are going to have leftovers the next day. The service was great. The servers were really good at taking away dirty bowls, getting drinks, making suggestions. I didn't mind the decor, because the good was great! I would def. recommend anyone to go if you are looking for quality sushi without the price tag!
Officially Calgary's #1 Sushi Place!!!. I just finished eating some more sushi from this place. I've been to all the big name and expensive sushi places in Calgary and some are okay but definitely NOT worth their prices.
Now at Momo-Yama the sushi is "DELICIOUS", it is so well made and you get so much sushi for the price which is also the lowest prices I've seen around Calgary for sushi!
My favorite is definitely their rainbow roll which is huge and i would also recommend the california roll, spicy tuna roll and philadelphia roll although it doesn't matter what you order because it's all prepared with so much passion! I can't say enough good things about this place I only hope their around forever!!!
Good Sushi. This places is tucked away in Richmond Shopping center, not really noticeable to anyone. Although it does serve some pretty decent sushi.
I agree with a previous review, the menu is not extensive by any means, but the cut and quality of ingredients make this a must try place for anyone in the SW or area.
The place is small, only has 3 booths, 8 tables, its run by a family. Started off with the Sunomono salad with shrimp, very nicely chilled and flavorful and a very nice miso soup.
Next we ordered the Philadelphia roll and volcano roll, both were good, then we ordered some tamago, Cajun shrimp and special scallop. All were really good.
Price is a bit steep for what you get, for the whole meal it was $63. Not horrible and it didn't leave me hungry, but at other places you do get more for the price.
Overall will be back for sure.
Gem. The sushi is phenomenal in this unassuming little restaurant. Fresh and delicious. Make a reservation - tables are always full, even mid-week.

Excellent inexpensive sushi. I have been to Momo three times this month. I originally decided to go elsewhere the first time I drove by because it looks cheap. I decided to go in one lunch by myself when I was in the area and was pleasently surprised. The rice is really good and the fish is fresh. The amount of fish/ingredients to rice is perfect. I've tried the philadelphia roll, avocado roll, california roll and the spicy tuna roll.
The staff seems like it's a father/wife/daughter who are usually there along with a few other younger girls. They all are super friendly and seem really happy and pleasant.
During both the lunch and dinner rush there was several people coming in to pickup take out orders. The staff seemed to all know these customers and the people dining there seemed to be regulars, too, which is always a good sign.
Although some people have commented on bad service, I received nothing but great service. It does seem like there is only the one chef and whether or not there's anyone in the back using the deep fryer or not I couldn't tell but it is very consistent and perfect portions on the above mentioned rolls.
The server (maybe the wife?) said that a lot of people really like the spicy tuna roll. They have a special spicy sauce which is unlike anything I have ever seen before. It is really spicy and has a weird texture, I forget what all she said was in it but she said it's very popular. I myself don't really like the spicier rolls so I can't really comment on it.
I highly recommend the phili roll, though. It's awesome and the smoked salmon is amazing! I have been trying different sushi places in the city for the past year and this is one I will continue to go back to because the prices are good, the fish is fresh, the service is great and the staff are awesome.
Sushi Snob. I love sushi so much and my family and I always eat here. It's closed sometimes on random days and we have tried other place none that can even come close to this place. I used to eat sushi at globefish and sushi boat which are alright but after trying sushi in many different cities and many different places in this city I am always delighted to come back to this one. The staff are amazing they know us by name now, and the fish is as fresh as it can be considering we are land locked. It's amazing and the value is beyond amazing. We spend 60 dollars there and leave full, we spent 100 at globefish and are disappointed and still hungry! this is for 4 of us. It's an amazing place would recommend it to anyone.
The sashimi is the absolute best value in Calgary. You get HUGE portions. Service is horribly slow. It's a small place. I bet take out is a better bet.
Best Value in Calgary. This restaurant is run by a single Sushi-Chef so the quality is always good. The portions are large, with no sacrifice for quality. The fish is as fresh as it gets in Calgary... I used to go to Sushi Hiro, and that was great, but too pricy. Lovely Lovey house roll.... it is the best.
Amazing food... fresh sashimi :). You can always tell a true sushi place by the freshness and quality of its food... especially the sashimi :)

Great Sushi. My husband and I love going to Momo-Yama's for sushi. It's our favorite place in Calgary for good, not expensive sushi. The restaurant is small, so I'd recommend making a reservation before going. If it is really busy, it could take awhile to get food because they only have one man making the sushi. The servers are always really friendly.
What K and I liked most was the subtle taste of vinegar in the rice - something that seems to be rare in sushi restaurants in Calgary.
The slices of tuna were thicker slices than the salmon. The tuna was firm yet when you bit into the tuna, it had that melt in your mouth texture.
My sister-in-law raved about her recent meal at Momo-Yama Sushi Japanese Cuisine. Given that she rarely eats sushi, particularly the raw stuff, I took her advice with a grain of salt.

One of my favorite places to go for sushi has long been MomoYama, in the Glamorgan shopping plaza in SW Calgary. It is a tiny little place, with active to-go customers (largely because getting seating is difficult!) and reasonably prompt service.

Everything was delicious and wonderful. My partner and I ate every single bite of our food because it was so delicious. The tuna and salmon sashimi was the best I’ve had in the city. Great quality for good price! The chicken karage portion was so big and crispy. We even had a time crunch because we had to leave in 45 mins and everything came out so fast! I was so impressed and go back!
popped up the street here tonight for an impromptu meal out and we were very impressed! Quiet, unassuming place with some of the best sushi we've had! The sashimi was so fresh and buttery, and some unique takes on our favorite rolls like the spicy roll and yam roll. Service was quick and friendly, I would highly recommend stopping in!
ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS PLACE!!! This is my favourite sushi place by far. If your there I definitely recommend trying their spicy sauce and their tuna appetizer with cucumber and avocado. Been going here for years and will continue to go for many more.
Fabulous sushi and the staff is amazing - I have ordered from here for years and the food is always top-notch. We even had an order delivered from skip which didn’t have the wasabi and ginger in it and the owners personally delivered it right away - what restaurant does that!!! Can’t say enough good stuff about this restaurant - you won’t be disappointed!
A nice small neighborhood Japanese restaurant. Service was prompt and friendly. The tables appear clean and the restaurant t looks like it is adhering to covid precautions. In terms of the food, we had miso soup toro sushi and sashimi plate. The portions were very reasonable, well proportioned and delicious. The sashimi plate had salmon, tuna, whitefish and octopus. The pricing was reasonable as well. I definitely recommend this place if you are craving good quality sushi.
Surprisingly nice little place, much better than the kinjos and those types of sushi places. The sushi was very good, the staff friendly. I would for sure return. It was a nice find.
This is my to go place for Sushi, Today I bought Salman Maki, Unagi and Sockeye Sushi. Sockeye sushi Has turned bad. I ate two of them they were ok, the third one tasted weird ( i did not eat it completely) and I am going to put fourth one in trash ( as I don't want to get sick). The Salman and Unage are still good to eat.

One of my go to spots for a quick Sushi experience. I have tried their eel +rice meal or in a sushi roll. Freshly made and won't disapoint. Their ramens are great too. I specially love their sushi rolls, avocado or mango. Clean and fast service, I often see Skip the Dishes assisting on their delivery. Decent amount of space, cozy ambiance and attentive staff. I like the fact that they customize my sushi orders and food is presentable and warm/hot for soups. Plenty of parking, although can be challenging to leave on peak hours. Summer or winter this is recommended.
