Review Bona Roma Pizza - Calgary

Damoona Moradi
A cozy family restaurant specializing in Italian food. Great vibe, acceptable taste, and fast serve. The portion of pasta was ample, and they served all pasta dishes with garlic bread. There was a girl who worked there who was nice but she seemed in a hurry to end the service soon, making us uncomfortable.

A staple go to place for a good non chain pizza! Prices are reasonable and the fact they keep a record of your order makes calling in to order a breeze. Staff have always been very helpful willing to explain any specials that they have and how long it will take to pick up. Can recommend 14inch house special and 8inch special…good for the price. Ordered some anchovies too and they gave us a couple on the house as they were running out…. Have not experienced dining in but always seems to be a steady supply of customers.

Best pizza I have ever had hands down ! And the owners are great!

Our pizza was delicious. My son has no cheese on his pizza and it was still made with care. My pasta was creamy and tasted like home made.

One of the best pizza we have ever tasted. It was really good. We got the vegetarian pizza it was so delicious. I will highly recommend this place.

This place is fantastic. We ordered the Pizza Fingers, fettuccini Casanova and classic Alfredo. The sauces tasted home-made and fresh. The pasta noodles we’re cooked perfectly and everything was done just the way it should be in a classic italian restaurant. The chef definitely knows what he’s doing. Portions are good for the price and quality. The service was awesome, you don’t ever have to wait for your server to check up on you. Thanks Hayley. It’s a small location but you can make reservations and the atmosphere is cozy and relaxing. It’s places like this that make me sincerely appreciate the little guys who haven’t lost touch with the soul of their craft. If you like little restaurants where the staff have a real passion for making good, delicious food, and providing a comfortable environment, check this place out.

I read a lot of reviews about the pizza and ordered one (pan fried). I was blown away by how low the pizza’s quality can be. The dough is very dense and heavy. The pasta is just unflavourful. My expectation was that it should be better than dominos or papa John’s, but it is half as good as those, which is a shame. Not sure why it is this pricy if it can’t even match what others offer. In the menu card, the pizza is supposed to have 5 meats, but got only 2. Definitely do not recommend. I understand the establishment is a family run, but it doesn’t preclude them from putting out atleast a decent quality of food.

One word! AMAZING! Definitely a must try! This small Italian restaurant is family run and owned. It’s adorable inside and out and serves up the most delicious pizza and pasta. Do yourselves and this family owned business a HUGE favour and go and try it out! They do pick and delivery as well and it’s been great through Covid! Go support them, you won’t regret it!

Bona Roma has awesome pizzas. We also like their pasta dishes. Nothing fancy & family friendly, great place to go eats.

I remember years ago this place used to be amazing. Not the case anymore. Were out of so much product we almost left when trying to order and the food tasted awful once we got it. My girlfriend and I went there last night and both got sick later that evening due to food poisoning after ordering their Rocky pizza. People used to line up to come here a long time ago but I/we will never go back. What a shame how far its fallen from its roots. Get your stuff together guys, your too small of a business to mess up on such a huge scale.

Ordered takeout from here so can’t speak to the decor or service. Ordered 2 pizzas and came out to $50 which I find absolutely ridiculous. Got back to the house and noticed that 1 of our pizzas had beef on it and one didn’t (we ordered 2 of the same pizza and it was supposed to come with beef). Called them and they did make it right by offering us a free pizza the next time we came in. Don’t think we’ll be back though as it is nowhere near worth it for the price.

Not the best pizza and fairly expensive for what you get, but good and better than what you would pay at the hotel I suppose:) it as close enough so a point for that.
Martin Patel
Not even close to worth the price. pizzas were okay but a lot of places nearby that are better for half the price. I'm talking about the Groupon price as well, the non groupon prices are just ridiculous.
Kathy
Small, quant and great pizza's - thank you! Ordered gluten free bases and they where delicious! Very generous with the toppings! Also ordered a normal pizza base and it was delicious as well!

My folks got us a Groupon for Christmas to Bona Roma, a small Italian eatery near Canada Olympic Park. Of course, I waited until a week before it expired to use it, but I’m sure glad we used it. The deal was for a shared appetizer or salad, 2 pastas or 2 pizzas (or 1 of each) and a shared dessert. You could choose 8″ or 10″ pizzas (of course we chose to get 10″ because leftover pizza is the bomb!).

We had a great experience here. Used the groupon, made a reservation for a Saturday night. Had a greek salad and a vegetarian and greek pizza. Tiramisu for dessert. The service was great. It wasn't that busy for a Saturday. The food was delicious and we thought we got great value for our money. Would return.

Service was great, the waitress was friendly and attentive. The garlic bread was unbelievable - fluffy and delicious!! Likewise to pizza crusts. We ordered the caesar salad, BBQ chicken pizza, lemon fettucine, and a dark chocolate ice cream for dessert. It was fantastic!
Kirsten
I can't begin to tell people how much I love this place! The food is to die for! They aren't joking when they say their pizza is award winning, that rocky special is fantastic! And the people are even better!
They really create a family environment. A perfect quaint dinner with home made fresh ingredients, tops every other pizza place I've been to.
I highly recommend going there!

Always good. Went in tonight after our team played a game and remembered this place from last time very accommodating!!!!

This place is expensive. The service is crap and their food is average at best. And to top it off they are open to 11 pm on a Friday night but they stop delivery at 8:30 pm. What is up with that? I had a house full of people at my house after a team event and we were going to be ordering a lot of food but they had stopped delivery at 8:30. I guess they done need the business. I will not be ordering from this place ever again.

Outstanding. I went in for lunch, a polite young waitress served me. She presented more options to the meals, that I would've have never thought of, and was very helpful. The food was amazing! Definitely a must. Will be back.

Always great. My kods love the food here! Always oir first choice! Hrlps that the staff are friendly too!

No more second chances. Used to really enjoy their pizza, but lately they've been completely devoid of pizza sauce. Last straw was my order with extra banana peppers having literally nothing except banana peppers on it.

Just Try Everything. All I can say is this place is amazing!!! Great food and the customer service is impeccable. My family and I order take out from here and it's always perfect. There is something for everyone and it keeps the whole family happy. Definitely try this restaurant you wont be disappointed. I am a thin crust lover and their Neapolitan Pizzas are a must try in my books.

Great food. We have been many times don't listen to the Brian donors that said it was no good pastas and pizza all homemade maybe the cheep creeps should stay at home and get a frozen pizza it would be in their budget you gotta try this place

Disappointing Dinner. This place has a quaint, hole in the wall feel but the vibe is not reflected in the prices of the dishes. Portions sizes were small, especially for pasta. For dinner, I had the manicotti (+$16) which to me looked scant even for lunch. Maybe this place has decent pizza but we hardly felt cared for and won't be returning.

I must say I have never been their but found out about this little gem from a friend. We went in on Sunday and were quite pleasantly suprised. It's amazing. The lady working was extremely nice and doing a great job considering it was extremely busy inside and the phone for what I assume was takeout. She recommended a pasta to us and it was amazing. My sons pizza was really good also. I must say I am quite happy this place was recommended to us. The quality of both the food and service will ensure I definitely come back again.

Organ donor. It is surprising that a pizza restaurant can ride on a reputation and get away with expensive substandard food for so long . Well now you are welcome to Bona Roma, home of the chewiest thin crust pizza in the world and screwed up orders. Order extra sauce and less cheese on a Hawaiian pizza? not a chance, it comes with extra cheese and no sauce on a doughy not crispy crust that resembles a wet diaper (we don't know where the crispy comes from). not once not twice but three times!! this is one bowness business that doesn't need to be patronized any more. Enough is enough. Way better pizza everywhere. And you don't have to sell your kidney to afford it.

:

Great Hole in the Wall. Was reading some of the reviews and felt the need to help this little shop out. I have been going there for years, the portions are always big, I easily have some left for lunch the next day. Not to mention, one of the few pizza places that I have found that still tastes great cold for lunch. I have had a number of different pizzas, pastas and a few of their appetizers (the Melinzano is a must), my personal favourite is the Lasagna. They make all the sauces in house (meat sauce, tomato sauce, pizza sauce) and they all blend together wonderfully. I have never found the prices to be anything but reasonable. To each their own though.
One thing I do enjoy about them, they have a huge selection of toppings yet they don't 'follow the crowd' to shove the latest topping on there (ie. avacados) just to do the 'In' thing.
Give it a shot :)
Cheryl
Expensive for average food. Slow delivery. 30 dollars for single lasagna and side tossed salad!!
Jennifer
Extremely dissapointed. It should have been my first clue when I called to place an order that the girl who answered the phone obviously didn't care and sounded about 16. The food was VERY dissapointing. The manicotti was not worth the $16. Plus it was cold and watery in the middle. The Lemon Chicken Fetuccini tasted odd. Not really sure how to describe it. Will not be ordering from there again.

I read the review of 4 stars got excited to try a new place good pizza so wrong... Got a extra large same kinda crust as papa johns the only difference is "NO TOPPINGS". I am a good eater and ate half of pizza and still was hungy!! never been able to eat that much pizza in one sitting. lucky if i got 4 pieces of assorted 5 choices on one piece of pizza. very very disappointed....

Certainly not what it used to be..... We used to love Bona Roma and thought that they had one of the best pizzas in the NW. I don't really know why we continue to give them a chance. It was at least a year between visits because the food quality was so poor, but we decided to give them another try about two or three weeks ago. Delivery was going to be 90 mins so we picked up the order. Their once fantastic pasta was dry and flavorless and they shorted us a salad. We called and they put a note on our file to credit our next order. We tried again tonight (since my wife wanted a salad and we had the credit) and it was no better. Spinach salad does not even have fresh red peppers, and my pizza was horrible. (evidently they no longer use fresh side bacon - just the crap in a bag). Further I asked for fresh tomato on my pizza and it was missed. All this after being delivered to the wrong house initially. What a joke. Don't waste your time or money. Clearly they simply don't care and have ran this place into the ground.

The gluten free pizza is no good. It was super thin and very cracker-like. The toppings were scant and over all, the pizza seemed overdone. Would not order there again.

Impolite staff, owners as well. They offered a coupon on their website and when the staff was shown they claimed it was supposed to say only on Monday's and they forgot to update the website and still would not honor it. I've worked next door to for 2 years and they always expect a discount when they come in but never give out discounts to neighboring businesses, and they're incredibly over priced as is.

Brutal service, horrible meal. The food we ordered wasn't great... however I could overlook that and not bother with a bad review, had the waitress not been so incredibly rude to us. I don't know that I have ever been spoken to in that tone of voice in a restaurant before.... I will NEVER be back, and suggest anyone else also find an alternate place to dine.

Meh. My husband ordered a spaghetti carbonara and I ordered the greek salad. The food was not spectacular but it was fine (I would recommend the salad but not the spaghetti carbonara. What 'ruined' it for me was that the staff at the restaurant weren't very friendly. They made it seem like it was the last place they wanted to be: resting their head on the counter and finally, after 10 minutes of waiting, grabbing our bill and credit card from our table without any sort of acknowledgement. You can expect to get your food put on the table by the waitresses but nothing more.

Great find!. Great great great!
If you are lucky you will get a table as the place as only about six. They sold a wild amount of take out pizza while we were there. The Mexican pizza was awesome so was the lasagna. Great as it s right off highway 16 on the was to Banff, opposite COP and there is free parking!

It's good but not enough sauce on the pie for my taste. Other then that it's a good choice for family pizza.

Great find! I got stick out.... Great find! I got stuck out at the Four Points (normally downtown at the Westin) and I was dreading my restaurant choice but my meal here was wonderful. Small place but busy with very friendly service and the best pizza I have had in a very long time. I won't be changing from my downtown hotels but I would gladly eat here again. Had the famous bona Roma pizza.

Good Service. Staying at the Sandman Hotel way out here, there is limitations to good food close by. This place is a "mom and pop" place, with a cozy atmosphere. The server is very friendly, efficient and welcoming. She delivered the food exactly as ordered, even though I changed a few things from the standard menu. I like the the calzones, because it's like a pizza with a caesar salad included. I asked for extra-cooked because the first time it wasnt as crispy as I wanted. I have been back a few times since and I overall think this place is affordable and good quality. I do think the sauce can have a few more spices though, it was a little bland.
