Review Pho Kim Restaurant - Calgary

I’ve been coming to this place for the last couple years, and it’s still as good as the first time i had it. Everything about this restaurant is amazing. The staff, the atmosphere, the service, the food, it’s all so good. And it’s very inexpensive. I always leave this place full and happy. The pho is my favourite, a large number 1 is my go to. The food comes out remarkably fast, so it’s really great when you’re starving and don’t want to wait for slow service!! 10/10, would recommend :))

Haven't been to this place for almost 8 years due to not working in downtown any more. The flavor didn't change much. I found the noodle is little soft compared to what I had before. The broth is almost as flavourful as what it was before. Will come back if I ever happen to visit that area.

We love this place, both for dine in or takeaway. Their Satay Pho is amazing [#15], also the Satay Shrimp on Vermicelli [#33] is outstanding. When you dine in, they offer you complimentary tea. The service is efficient. Located in the Far East Shopping Center, the location can’t be beat.

Had the extra large Pho Sate - excellent as usual. Awesome broth, great noodles and beef... just overall excellence! I'm pleased every time I come here

A nice Vietnamese restaurant in an Asian shopping center in Chinatown. Don’t be fooled by the sketchy appearance of the shopping centre, the food is worth it. The menu features lots of different affordable dishes. The pho is tasty and the portion is HUGE. Like most places in the area, service isn’t very friendly for western standards but it’s indeed very quick, and complimentary tea is served. The pho broth was really aromatic but a little on the sweet side (personal opinion and taste), but the side vegetables were super fresh. I would recommend this place to any pho lover that is willing to be lenient towards the staff’s attitude.

Very delicious pho!! I'm visiting from Toronto and I thought Pho Hoai was really good. The service was so nice. I ordered the Pho Sate and they offered to give me more sate on the side. It was the perfect amount of heat. I loved it. Tasty beef!! I would definitely recommend this place to anyone craving for pho!

Ordered 200$ for group meal uber eats. Long strands black hair on two meals, plus shorter strands inside freshrolls. Please do something!!! Thankfully uber responded, but the restaurant need to be more complaint with hygiene and hair nets.

Great pho with great tasting broth. Service is amazing. Would definitely recommend visiting them. XL bowl is size comparison to my hand which is large.

Hmm, we used to come here ALL the time. Always good, fast, food with value. But came here the other night for the first time in a couple of months, and it wasn't the same. The portions were very small and not worth the price. The broth was good, noodles perfectly cooked, but the small bowl size of soup was obscenely tiny for the price, and you can get a larger and better bowl of pho not much farther away for the same price. I had to order a Large for it to be the same size as other Pho places. The spring rolls were good, and the nuam choc dipping sauce was great, but think we'll stick with our neighbourhood pho based on price/value alone. Sorry!

Good spot for your fix of cheap and tasty pho. The service is not the most attentive - the staff will sometimes forget about requests for water, etc - but IMHO the fast speed of the service makes up for this oversight.

Was here for lunch today and a small beef noodle soup was not the value it use to be. The food was hot and the veggies were fresh but the small size food portion is more designed for a child. It may be a good idea to order an appy for 2.

I used to like coming here, but the food isn’t as good as it used to be. My fiancé ordered 24b and didn’t like it at all. Normally you can’t go wrong with vermicelli, but it was bland. We originally ordered the same thing to go, and asked the server if we could change it to 24a since it had spring rolls but she said no because they already made it. They’re similar dishes, all they had to do was add a few more things to the dish. Instead, we just ordered a side of spring rolls and hope it would salvage the dish. I was extremely disappointed with the service and the food. This used to be good. The service needs to improve, the server seemed really annoyed when I asked her questions. I probably won’t be returning here anymore.

Pho Kim gets a 4.0 because at cheap and quick restaurants like this, I'm only here for the food. And the food is great. The service, however, is absolutely horrendous. I asked the young waitress (who wore death on her face) if she could please bring me a small bowl for my child and she responded with an eye roll and walked away. The bowl never came. Come to Pho Kim for a quick delicious bite but don't expect service (of any sort, really)

I have been here many times over the past 12 years and always a decent meal. However, my last visit was just last week (and I hadn’t been for about almost 2 years) but the lady who served us was obscenely rude and disrespectful. I was showing the place to a friend for their first time and because of this women it made the whole experience highly uncomfortable to the point where we had our things packaged up and left to eat at home. On the lighter note, there was a very sweet and wonderful man working that made up for the poor service on her behalf. Will take some time before coming here again sadly.

Very bad. My beef pho was oily with very fatty meat. Vegetables means carrots (it came with diced pieces and, oddly, one large piece floating on top??). Coffee came premade and tasted old. Peeked in the kitchen and they had jugs of coffee they microwaved before serving. Would not go again. Would not reccommend.

Portions are very generous, price is fair. Their pho has much more beef than most other restaurants. Service is quick and owner is very courteous. They open late too ! Overall better experience than most Vietnamese restaurants I've been to.

My boyfriend’s friend invited my boyfriend and me to have Vietnamese food for lunch when we came back from Toronto during the weekend. I am not a Vietnamese food fan. But, the one we had, was very great. We went to Pho Kim’s Vietnamese Noodle House for lunch. It located on Centre B St NW, Calgary, AB T2M 2R5. It is a very big restaurant, has two floors. We arrived the restaurant around 12 pm right on the lunchtime. The restaurant was very full already. We were very lucky to find a table Upstairs. We all had the Noodle Soup with beef ball, rare beef, flank, tripe & tendon with different sizes. I had a small size, my boyfriend had large, and his friend had x large. All the noodle soup was in the large portion. They were all very well cooked and fresh. Even though I don’t really like the Vietnamese Noodle Soup, I really enjoy having noodles at Pho Kim’s. Very great experience.

Quick and friendly service, Pho comes in large proportions (generous amount of meat), cheap and the broth is hot! Great place for a quick lunch.
The provide fresh, raw beansprouts with basil, lime slices and chili peppers (a lot of other places don't provide chili peppers).

Standard ass pho place. Low cost and gemerous portion sizes It's nice that they have parking for customers. Nothing to really say about this place other than average average average across the board in all respects.

Lap Chi Duong
Pho here is not bad for close ton downtown. I had breakfast here the rice cake and viet ham is quite tasty. Bun bo hue is probably better than the Pho. Try those 2 items if you aren't there for the pho!

Decent place for Pho. Its quite a big place so the wait is not bad for lunch and they are quick.
Wish the sizes were a bit bigger compared to other restaurants
Tkadventures
Very good broth, I like how they open a little bit later than other pho restaurants, good place to go for a late night munch. Service is friendly, portion is very good and filling.
Whitegurlsushi
Nice little pho place just off centre street. The sate beef pho is really good and has a nice flavor. The noodles are perfect and the chili oil goes nicely on pretty much everything. The service is insanely fast and overall fairly pleasant

The Pho is amazing! Best I've had in Calgary. Can't seem to find any better. I've had it spicy (#15) and it's delicious!!! And I've also had it rare (#2) and added my own spice to increase the heat to exactly where I want it! I highly recommend the place. Good food at a good price. And the staff is super friendly.
Hypsochromic
Worth going to! I love their huge bowls of pho! Satay is consistently spicy! Service is never outstanding, but it's not awful. Would be nice to be able to split bills though, that's basic service offered everywhere else!
KT
It's a decent place, there pho is good, but everything else i've tried here is a miss. I go here mainly because since it's so big you're guaranteed a seat.

pho kim is one of my go-to spots for pho. what sets pho kim apart is their broth, full of rich flavour which has undoubtedly been slowly brewing since the wee hours of the morning. some pho restaurants are guilty of using packaged seasoning. how can you tell?

the measuring bar for me, when rating the quality of a bowl of pho is how thirsty i feel after the meal. if you feel the need to drink an excessive amount of water after your meal, you probably ate a bowl using packaged seasonings for the soup broth. you'd be surprised how many places do this.

i don't find this to be the case with pho kim. my usual is a mixture of the rare beef, beef tendon, tripe and meatballs - a wonderland of deliciousness with various delightful textures. when it's a hot day during the summer, i often also go for the Bun Thit Nuong - grilled pork, spring roll and vermicelli, which is fresh, light and tasty.

service is always prompt and attentive, when you need them to be. reasonably priced (for today - i remember when pho used to be $5 for an XL bowl back in the day) and conveniently located by 16th ave and center street. 4 stars from me, since i'm a regular.

Nice and clean Vietnamese restaurant with friendly service. I found their soup base for beef noodle soup very tasty and among the very best. Pay a dollar more and get the extra size, you won't regret it. When you want to take the left over soup home, they will separate the soup and the beef noodle into 2 separate containers so they don't get soggy, this is very thoughtful and caring. Highly recommended.

I can say for me that this place is somewhere I will never attend. My friend enjoyed his meal, but as a VEGETARIAN they are downright awful. They made me feel horrible for being a vegetarian because both servers kept sighing to thinking of option for me to eat. The girl server left, and the guy server was left to deal with me, the demanding customer. He suggested vermicelli with fried veggies, peanuts, and it'll almost be like some sort of pad thai, it wasn't. When the food came out.. It was a plate of what looked like canned vegetables, which were cold, and the vermicelli had no sauce (sort of pad thai my ass) it was simply the noodles alone. I had two bites and it was distasteful. They didn't care about me as a customer and my needs, which are very basic. I've been to enough pho places where they have plenty of vegetarian options. I hate to rant, but for once I felt bad for inconveniencing them. When I went to pay, he didn't even ask me about my food, after he took away a full plate. I can't believe he didn't ask what was wrong, or even try to accommodate me. He charged me FULL PRICE!! Even though the people who may read/skim this post may think I am a hippy that complains too much.. no... simply just letting you know of service you shouldn't have to go through.

One of the friendliest Vietnamese restaurants in the city and a solid choice for great food. Super yummy soup broth! This is also a very large restaurant so there usually isn't a worry about getting a table right away.

We went there around 9pm and the server told us that they already did the last call for the kitchen. I asked her what the closing hours were and she said sorry and went back inside. Pho is good here but the broth tastes like has lots of MSGs in it. Limited parking is available.
YYCFoodie
I like that they have parking spots for their customers. Service is fast. The pho sate has the light kick of spice but I feel like it's a bit too oily. They don't do beef on the side so the beef is well done. Beef stew is quite spicy according to my friend. But it looks delicious!

Very good!. We went here a few weeks ago, and the service was excellent. It's a nice place, as well. I had the taro bubble tea, which was delicious and pork and spring roll bun. Everything was very, very good and we will be coming back in the future! Definitely try it out.

Ordered through Skip the Dishes. I order Pho 3-4 times a week.. The first time trying somewhere new I ordered through Skipthedishes.ca
I order a RARE beef pho and asked for Extra Beef and Extra Veg Both with an added charge. I asked for all my beef on the side so it wouldnt become well done on the trip here.. which is my regular order
I just opened my pho to well done beef and probably not even half the amount of beef I usually get.
VERY disappointed.
Austin
No amount of hot sauce can save this vermicelli. Cool atmosphere but the food is absolutely terrible. The service is really bad as well. I would never recommend this dirty hole. I actually threw up after eating here.

Still my favorite. As a vietnamese food lover,I tried many other vietnamese restaurant in the city for three years. Still this is my favorite. No surprise or no disappointment, if u don't order the spring roll. The meat in spring roll doesn't taste good. other than that I like other menus.
Billy Orcinus
The pho is just water with powder, blandest pho in the city. Nothing more has to be said. Automatically a phofail.
Erin F.
The restaurant is clean and modern, the staff is friendly, the service is speedy, and most importantly - the pho is awesome! Great spring rolls and salad rolls, too. Will definitely return. Excellent!
Famished Feline
Average at best. Limited parking
food came out fast
What we got seemed fresh
What I was most disappointed with is amount of meat..I had the 24a... shredded pork and grilled pork spring roll bun. The shredded pork was MIA and there were 3 pieces of pork slices that were thin enough to let light through.

Good but pricey. I live in the area and get takeout once a week. I enjoy the nights I go to Pho Kim because the have the best salad rolls I have ever found and the peanut sauce they give you is awesome.

I will say that the prices here are noticeably more expensive for food that tastes relatively the same from other Vietnamese restaurants in the area (the salad rolls being the exception).

The Best..... I travel a lot for work, and I order Pho virtually everywhere I go.

I've probably ordered Pho at 3 dozen different establishments across North America in 2013 alone, and I can honestly say without a doubt the Satay Beef Pho at Pho Kim is the best!
Kelly
Meh. I used to like this place; maybe I have been spoiled by other, better Vietnamese restaurants. The service was exceptionally bad today, to the point of being really awkward. Our server brought us cold tea that we has specifically told him we didn't want. After ordering soups and spring rolls, the food came to our table in less than one minute, which was weird. Spicy sate soup was SO bland... looked like murky water with one tiny spoonful of chili oil on top, not even mixed in. Something was wrong with the spring rolls too... they had a really odd texture and seemed discoloured.

This place used to be pretty good, but I won't be back. I like food that has flavor; nothing we ate today did, and the service was not good enough to make me give it another chance.

Good Except.... I used to come here at least once a week. I have a severe peanut allergy and never had an issue with the Pho. The last time I went there I ordered my normal #2, when the waitress brought it to me it was clear that that there was Satay sauce in it, which has peanuts. I asked her if it had peanuts a few times and she said no every time, then I asked her if that was satay sauce and she said yes. I didn't return.

I enjoyed my time here as it is a good price and filling food and definitely miss it. But the service left something to be desired and the bathrooms aren't clean, have to wonder about the kitchen.

Great. Haven't been here for a long time. Came on a Friday afternoon and I was very surprised how great the interior looked compared to the exterior. The place has been renovated and it is very clean and open. Lots of space and it was very bright. The waitresses were fast and nice. Had a Pho Sate and Pho Dac Biet which both were great. Also had an Avocado smoothie which was well made as well. I can never understand how Pho place's always pull off this smoothie so well. Will be coming back in the future.

Too Bad. I have been eating at Pho Kim for 6 years. It only seems to get worse. Today I orders spring rolls with extra lettuce to go. I didn't get any fish sauce, only hot sauce in the bottom of the sauce container and my extra lettuce was a half head of Ice Berg lettuce. This to me is a serious waste of food and a rip off. If I am going to pay an extra $2 to get lettuce with my spring rolls it had better be green leaf or romaine, not the cheapest lettuce on the market. Perhaps to some of you this is petty but I have been eating at Vietnamese restaurants in this city for 30 years. At one time lettuce and mint were served with the spring rolls & fresh ingredients were never in question. It's getting harder & harder to find a good Vietnamese Restaurant.
El Paso
2nd time there. We probably were sat at the worst table there. Tea wasn't hot. Within a minute of giving our order sheet to the staff, we had our meal within another minute. Really? We ordered a large bowl of pho and to us, compared to other places, it seemed a small size. $7.00 for an order of 4 pc spring roll is expensive compared to many other places. Go back..not so much.
Yrodriguez
Honestly best Vietnamese restaurant in town!! Only complaint is that within the last 6 months or maybe a bit more their noodle bowls have gotten way smaller and are still the same price as before , other than that everything else is great!
David
Love the pho sate here. It's a bit different than other pho sates in that it's devoid of peanuts but it's still good. Kids are a big fan of the pho tai.
Peter Pham
Pho is only good thing here. I didnt like any else except the pho soups and drinks. The springrolls and salad rolls just didnt taste right. The place was dead yet the service was poor and the dishes were dirty when they brought it to us. 6/10 star

Rediscovery of an old favourite. I used to frequent Pho Kim often to satiate my pho cravings, however since moving away from the area I stopped going.

Had a chance to retry Pho Kim again, and since I've been there last (years ago) it is under new management now and their prices has (understandably) gone up. I ordered the rice, pork chop, shredded pork, and egg pie meal, around $10.

Since we went on a weekday shortly before 11 am, the place wasn't too overly busy. We were greeted and shown to our table quickly, and our tea arrived immediately after. We all placed our orders in, and the food came out relatively fast.

First thing I did notice was the portion sizes, my meal, for around $10, was quite small, adorned with slices of cucumber.

One good thing was the items that were supposed to be hot were hot. The shredded pork was fresh tasting, with the 'gelatin' strands exhibiting an al dente texture. The egg pie was good, but the real star of the dish had to be the pork chop. It was sliced thin for ease of cooking, but it was absolutely moist. The marinade they used (fish sauce ?) was absolutely amazing, had abit of sweetness to it yet salty enough to make it savoury. This has got to be one of the best vietnamese grilled pork chop I've had.

Despite the chintzy amount of food, it was overall quite good, and I was pleased with the level of service. One downside was during the meal a whole pile of screaming kids came in for drinks, and that took away from the overall dining experience.

Don't waste your time.. The past 3 visits have been terrible. I have gone with family and friends and have taken out of town guests as well. I extolled the flavour of the food and the service. But, these past few visits were embarrassing. On 2 occasions I had to go to the front desk to advise that our table was ready to order. On my last visit the food was cold when it was served. Its a shame as this was once a favorite of mine.
Pickier Than You
Simple requests....ignored again. The soup is good here, but last time was the last visit for me. I requested well done spring rolls (explaining that they are usually cold in the middle on previous visits). the waitress said sure no problem... goes to the Kitchen and comes back within 5 seconds with spring rolls??? I tried doubtfully and sure enough, they are the same as always.

I also requested NO tendon in the Pho, and it was there too... plenty of it. I understand mistakes happen, but this restaurant could not care less. When I sent the spring rolls back, they did not even ask why. I was not rude, or pretentious... and there was no communication problems, so I can only assume that they just don't care.

So I leave, no tip, no plans to return....

Looking for new Pho place :(
Hitting The Sauce
Pho!. The service is quick and friendly (enough). I ordered a medium pho with beef flank. The broth was very clean - and I didn`t get the MSG after effect that occurs at some places. The noodles were cooked perfectly - nice amount of noodles and meat. The salad rolls were fresh - good peanut sauce. The spring rolls aren`t as good as Golden Bell or Song Han, a bit doughy.

A good place to go for Vietnamese food in Calgary
Aki
I liked sate, fresh roll was great with juicy beef inside, Taro slush is my favorite here
Milo
Food is pretty good, but I would not recommend this place based on service. If you go with friends and would like to pay seaperatly (even if you are willing to figure out what you each owe) you better have cash. They will not let you pay with more than one credit card or visa. They also don't accept MasterCard so if you don't have a visa I guess you have to wash dishes. They need to join the rest of this century and get with the program.

Consistently Awesome! Get the 17a or the 15!!! Also, the salad rolls with satat beef is great. cheap, awesome food

Delicious!. I love Pho Kim! I've dined in or ordered takeout from there at least once a week for the last two years and never had a bad experience. They have one of the best satay beef soup in the city!
Vicky
I love this place! The best pho place in Calgary. I prefer their soups and wraps and spring rolls over any of their other dishes though.

Love it. If I want Pho I usually go to Pho Thanh but other than that I often go to Pho Kim to get Viet food. I love how they have a pretty good menu with so many choices. Most of the dishes are pretty good with a decent amount of food, the price are avarage,or even cheaper compare to lot of Viet restaurants this size.
The restaurant is clean, the service is extremely quick ( I heard it is b/c they got a new chef) The servers are quite nice and friendly.
Highly recommend you try :
#17 The beef Stew ( mix salt+pepper+ lime juice-->great sauce to eat the beef with ;) )
#29 Spicy jumbo noddle Bun bo hue,
the veggie springrolls ,
and
the egg noodle soup with a deep fried chicken drumstick on the side
Robby
Just ok. Good and inexpensive. nothing special. I am sure everything is pre-made as it took them literally 2 minutes to bring our order

Steadily going downhill. I love Pho. I had my first taste about 10 years ago, and I was hooked. Pho Kim used to be among the very best in Calgary, and was the best place to get a large steaming bowl of delicious pho sate outside of forest lawn.

I'd been frequenting this place for the last 10 years, and used to go at least once a week. Unfortunately, over the last 3 years, the prices have been going up, and the pho sate has been going downhill. The broth is weak and thin, and the sate just doesn't have the same depth of flavor that it used to.

Sadly, nothing comes close to what Pho Kim used to be... and I still haven't found a go-to place to get my Pho Sate fix.

It was really good. Service was friendly and fast food was great. Nice looking place. Only bad thing is that the mens washroom does not lock

Yummy broth. The broth is really flavorful and their service is super quick. The pho satay is really good.

I got my standard bun bo hue. Nothing really special but I do enjoy the meat to noodle ratio!

It was nice to see that Pho Kim did a full renovation inside and out since the last time I went several years ago. There’s just something about the white walls and boreal green that they had; these colours can make any restaurant feel old and outdated and possibly spark the curiosity of patrons as to how clean the entire establishment is (including the kitchen). However, now Pho Kim is caught up with the modern times as they have a brand new colo
For The Love Of...
Pho Kim's menu offers the standard Vietnamese fare: spring rolls, salad rolls, grilled meat on rice/rice vermicelli and variations of rare beef, brisket, tripe and beef balls in noodle soup.

No two palettes are ever really the same. When comparing personal preference on something as varied as Pho, there really is no true way of determining which bowl is better. It’s all a matter of what suits you best.
