Review Pho Chu The - Calgary

I've tried many styles of Vietnamese foods and this place hits the right spot. The flavours are all there and the price is very affordable. One thing to mention is that upon waking towards the front door, you can smell the amazing fragrance of their grilled meats.

New Vietnamese restaurant in Mahogany. Tried it today. Small setting, very clean, and environmental friendly. Would definitely go back again! The beef steak with rice and egg.. sooooo good! And so cheap too! Friendly staff. Taro Bubble tea was too sweet but it’s all good, it’s not a bubble tea place so can’t be picky. Chicken wings were so yummy but they’re small and only comes in 6 pieces, not sure it’s worth the price. I love it tho! Can’t wait to go back

The Bun Bo Hue here is great, and so is the Vietnamese egg pancake! Highly recommend trying them out.

Good food and service. Many places food go up the prices and quality wasn’t good but here better food and prices wasn’t expensive. Will be back

Finally found our Vietnamese restaurant for Calgary. We visit our kids regularly and love the variety of ethnic restaurant available but never quite found our "go to" restaurant for Vietnamese food until now. We all had bun dishes and simply put were perfect for us. Add the friendly service and ambiance that made for a great dining experience. We loved it and recommend giving it a try as we're pretty sure you will to.

So this is a two fold review. My mother and her friend went for lunch today. It was mother's first experience having Vietnamese and she was so impressed with the restaurant the cleanliness and service was top notch! The food was fabulous as well. But to end this already great experience for them was that some kind young gentlemen paid for their lunches! Who ever you gentlemen are you get an "Atta boy!"

The best phó place in Calgary hands down. And it’s not only soups that are fantastic, the produce they use is always fresh and it shows! The server Mai is also so lovely. She has great attention to detail and is always such a ray of sunshine 😊

My favorite pho place in Calgary. I always get the beef stew and the beef is always perfectly cooked and tender. Definitely recommend giving this place a try!

Broth flavours didn’t combine well & brisket texture was odd. Lots of other options on the menu though & the staff were very attentive (3/5).

I was with my sister and we wanted to order one XL bowl since I was full. We asked for a separate empty bowl for me since I wanted a few bites of her food but they didnt let us only order one bowl. This was ridiculous since they didnt allow us to share while we didnt want to waste food. I will not be coming back in the future and will not reccomend this place because of its service.

This is probably my most recent favourite Vietnamese restaurant but unfortunately, is quite a task for me to get to. <br/><br/>They’re located on the main floor of an old apartment building. During non-peak hours you can readily find parking out front. The restaurant isn’t very big but the handful of times I’ve been here, there’s always a lot of tables left unclean. I think I’ve only ever noticed one server though.<br/><br/>The food is excellent. I especially love their egg pancake. So crisp and yummy! The bun bo hue is pretty good as well. Not overly spicy. The ox tail soup is extremely flavourful. Tastes like they’ve spent at least a day stewing it!

This is my favorite restaurant for pho and I have gone to many. The quality is consistent and the flavour of the broth is amazing! I always get the #19 and I go at least once a week!

I love that they are open at 10am because I love having pho for breakfast. I like that they have fish sauce right on the table (just straight fish sauce, not the one mixed with sugar water and lime served with spring rolls and vermicelli bowls). This place is becoming one of my top Viet places. <br/><br/>Atmosphere/service: small dining area, but not dirty <br/>looking like some Viet places.<br/><br/>Price: A couple dollars more expensive than some other places, but it might be on par with other pho in the neighborhood. ($12.50-$14.00 pho in 2017)<br/><br/>Review of two dishes:<br/><br/>Beef ball pho with sate: <br/>Good! Good sate oil, LOTS of beef balls. About double the amount of beef balls I get with the same dish at my favourite pho place, Pho Huong Viet, but it is a few dollars more so I guess it's the same thing. Pho comes out quickly. <br/><br/>#10 (Pho with assorted meat):<br/>light aromatic broth that I enjoyed very much. Noodles came out perfectly al dente. <br/><br/>

Good brisket good flank! Good soup! Fresh bean sprouts and basil, freshly made spring rolls were quite tasty. Clean restaurant! Service is ok, too. In my top 3 list now for choice of pho hehehe.

Very good! The restaurant is very nice inside and the service was very good. The soup was very good! Very fresh and delicious. The soup was huge and was also very well priced. Highly recommend this place.

One of the better Phos in macloud trail. Possibly top 10 in Calgary. Broth is different through out the day. Make sure you catch the better end of the pot. 11am tastes pretty good but I do taste some msg.<br/>

Excellent food here. One of the only places that serves egg pancake as well (classic Vietnamese breakfast food) fluffy, savoury, spongy Mmm. Not to be confused with seafood pancake (ban xiao). Just about everything is good here and I enjoy that they carry traditional stews as well.
Karen
Really awesome Pho on Macleod trail. I like that they give you jalapeños in addition to the regular bean sprouts/basil. Service was good. Lots of meat in the Pho dac biet which was great! The bun bo hue was just ok. I'd recommend sticking to the Pho

This is one of the best restaurants for pho that I have found in Calgary to date. I've tried eight so far. A nice looking place, efficient staff (if not particularly friendly), the pho was good. I had the rare beef and tendon. I'll keep looking for other good prospects, but I look forward to going back to this one.

this used to be my go to place in SW, in that area.  but the quality has gone quite downhill.  The bowls have gotten smaller, the prices have gone up, and the cleanliness of this place has significantly dropped.

This is a nice little place, cozy and casual. I've been here a few times and I really like it.<br/>The food comes out pretty fast and the service is alright. I really enjoyed the Iced Coffee, although very strong it's soooo good. I've had the beef ball noodle soup and the beef sate soup. Not that much different but I must say I liked the beef ball soup more. They have good bubble tea too. All in all good food and I will definitely be back!

Good soup!  I order the pho, my wife orders Bun.  Both are very good.  If they could charbroil the meat, as Bun Boys does, it would be outstanding!<br/><br/>Only criticism is the staff.  One waitress was talking on her phone for a period of time and I could hear every detail of her weekend.  It wasn't appropriate.<br/><br/>I will return.

(Updated 2017-08-27 - looking back at my review I made way back, I felt like even though my words were true, they actually deliver good food.  So I'm adjusting my score from 2.0 back to 3.0)<br/><br/>I used to come to this restaurant almost every week. My favorite on the menu was 23B, the beef stew with baguette. I decided to eat less meat so I came here less, but that's not the only reason. The service I received sometimes just made me shake my head. <br/><br/> Last week I came here and my husband ordered his usual vermicelli. Another server later brought his dish and said "here you go with no peanuts". My husband and I looked at each other and said to her, "we didn't say anything about no peanuts". The restaurant wasn't busy at that time but it took our first server a full three minutes before she came back and said, "Oh I must've confused your order with another table that asked for no peanuts. Haha... so do you still want peanuts?"<br/><br/>Our answer really didn't matter at this point, but... excuse me?<br/><br/>We were surprised she would even ask that and not just bring the peanuts over. This petite server has been rubbing me the wrong way two other occasions. One time when I was about to pay she asked if I wanted the receipt, and I said yes. Then I tapped my card and then gave her back the card machine, she said thank you and was about to walk away. I asked her, "Excuse me my receipt please?" "Oh sorry I forgot. I can't print it again, it's too late now.  Thank you!"<br/><br/>Another occasion I ordered the drip coffee, something that I always love but don't order very often.  But the coffee came dripped, so really, I felt like I was paying a lot of money for milk coffee. I asked her "Excuse me, I thought this coffee comes with the drip filter?" and she simply said "No we do it in the kitchen" and just walk away.<br/><br/>I won't be coming here much after this I don't think. Their vegetable rice noodle soup (number 28) only has a few cauliflower, broccoli and carrot; the amount of vegetable is pathetic. Also this is one of the very very few Vietnamese restaurants that doesn't have seafood rice noodle soup.<br/><br/>Too bad, their other dishes are really good (food alone I would give it a score of 4.0).   My experience here has just to be constantly disturbed by the level of service.<br/>...

Consistent. Delicious. Quick service. Lunch time can be busy. Their sate soups are quite different than other places - and delicious, more hot than peanuty.<br/><br/>Update: increase in prices as of April 2018 is not sitting well with me. Nothing has changed in terms of food or quantity.

Having to each lunch at one's desk in the office in sad; forgetting said lunch in the fridge is even more so. Since my mentor and I were already talking about Vietnamese I was craving it, and ended up picking this place due to its proximity to the office as well as Zomato rating. <br/><br/>For comparisons, I did their pho chicken satay and pork spring rolls. <br/><br/>Pros: quick takeout service. Place looked clean, decor is functional. Lots of Asian people in here for lunch. Lots of rice noodles and sprouts for my pho. <br/><br/>Cons: the satay pho was weak. I'm used to my broth having a bit of backbone and this was spicy, but not really meaty, very watery. Decent spring rolls but on the expensive side($6.25 for 4). Wrapping for takeout was barely done, so soup spilled in the bag. <br/><br/>Maybe I caught them on an off day, so hopefully it'll be a better experience for others.

Being a Vietnamese male, I grew up with eating Pho all my life.  My mom always makes home-made pho, so for years I always thought her was the best until I tried Pho at Pho Chu The.  Literally the best Pho I've had, including my mom's.  Broth was nice and tasty, they give you a nice sized plate of bean sprouts and basil.  The best part has to be the meat.  I absolutely love the meat they provide in the bowl of Pho. My mom also boasted about this restaurant, and usually if she says a place is good (especially if it's Vietnamese), then its good.  Another great plate is the Bot Chien.  Again, my mom says this is the best place to get Bot Chien, so trust her and order it the next time you go here.  Great place, love it!
Ricebelly
They used to have good chicken pho and that is only thing I came for. Not only it's not that good anymore, every single items on the menu has been jacked up by at least $2.00. <br/>
Theresa
I used to love coming here whenever I was in the area up until about a week or two ago. Price to product was always even but since their price increase they decreased their portions. Paying around $6-$7 for spring rolls is a little excessive. There is a lot of msg in their food as of recent which makes up for the increase in food because it's cheaper to purchase msg. Needless to say I will not be back any time soon.
My Lucky Belly
This is my other favourite Vietnamese restaurant! I come here often because it's closer to my house. I really like the flavourful broth. I always order the Vietnamese pancake. There is something about the combination of the crispy pancake, pan fried egg, pickled vegetables and dipping sauce that is so good. I would recommend the grilled squid as well.

Very poor service not authentic on Vietnamese food I try there bun Bo hue few weeks ago is one of the worst one in town don't waste your time & money. The owner is rude and not friendly at all. Will not come back <br/>

Possibly the Best Pho in Calgary... Drive from far NW to this place just for their soup. Yummy... Highly recommend this place to everyone looking for good Pho!

Really enjoyed my WonTon soup. Very fresh ingredients, delicious hot broth and a very pleasant family run restaurant.

Best Vietnamese Restaurant. I have never written a review on a restaurant but I had to after my visit today at Pho Chu The. I have been to a dozen Vietnamese restaurants in Calgary and the quality of the food here is far superior. What first piqued my interest about this place is a review I read about how they make their own broth as opposed to pre-made or powdered broth. I read other reviews that mentioned that it might be closed but I took a chance and went anyway... so glad I did. There was a sign that read "Now Open" so I am assuming they went through some renovations. The interior was simply but tastefully decorated; very clean and well laid out. The space is small and unassuming and the service was warm and friendly although low key. Plenty of parking in front of the restaurant. I was able to pick a spot and was offered a beverage right away. The menu was interesting as there were quite a few variations on Vietnamese dishes that I had not encountered. I ordered the beef stew with rice noodles Pho and it arrived within 10 minutes. As this is the only dish I have ever ordered there I cannot speak for the whole menu but this was the best Pho I have ever had. The beef was so tender, the vegetables cooked to perfection and the broth was delicious and tasted "homemade" in the best sense of the word. I looked around and everyone else seemed to be enjoying their food just as much and all the dishes were very well presented and looked very tasty. I will not be going back to any other place for Vietnamese cuisine!

RUDE, terrible service even from the owner. We used to go to Pho Chu The once in a while, but hadn't gone in months. Went back today and service was terrible. Not a smile to be seen, wasn't asked about drinks, went hunting around for a menu. Some other folks came in to use a table right beside and wife's purse was on the chair. With kids, I guess it took a few seconds too long and the server dropped my wife's purse on the floor to clear the chair.<br/><br/>When service is this bad, the food doesn't matter.

When will they be open again. Really like there spicy phõ, but they've been closed a lot lately. <br/>Anyone knows when they'll be open again???

Best Pho that I eat in Calgary. Currently Pho Chu The has the best pho (that I try and this may change) although it may not be cheap as other Vietnamese restaurants in the SE/NE area. I recommend "pho tai ve don".<br/><br/><br/>-----15 Aug, 2014-----<br/><br/>Best Pho that I eat in Calgary. Why I Would Like to Live at Pho Chu The. This is the best place in the city for Vietnamese. After scouring Calgary for that special Vietnamese place after my old favorite got turned into a Golden Bell (Most sad), I finally found Pho Chu The. The food is hands down the best, the satay soup or the satay beef are probably the best but its all pretty much awesome. <br/><br/>So fresh and delish! And cheap too compared to some places. The people are super friendly, which makes sense since we see them 3-4 times a week. <br/><br/>I wish I could live here and repeatedly down bowls of soup and noods. That's the life for me.

Authentic Vietnamese food. Everything of the menu is a delight to try. Best pho for miles around.

Decent Vietnamese, service somewhat unpolished. We decided to try this place with my mom, as she used to work in the general vicinity.<br/><br/>I've been into the same place (before it was a Vietnamese eatery; Big Muffin years ago) and the interior has not changed much at all. The tables and chairs may have been new at one point, but the layout and the swinging door into the kitchen remains the same.<br/><br/>When we all got there, it was very much quiet; shortly thereafter the placed started to fill out quickly - not to the point where it was super crazy busy but bustling.<br/><br/>Once busy, it was a little bit of a challenge to flag down the waitress so we could place our order.<br/><br/>We decided to try the grilled squid (appy), and I ordered #42 - charbroiled pork chop, shredded pork, and pork egg custard on rice. The waitress informed us that the squid does take a while, and asked if we wanted to wait for the squid first or bring out the mains and then bring out the squid when it was ready. We chose the latter.<br/><br/>Since it was busy, food service was longer than usual. Once all the food came, there was a mixup between my mom's order and my companion's. They had gotten the pho orders mixed up, and when brought to their attention the waitress insisted that she was right. Upon checking the order, it was proven she had made a mistake (fine, we're all human) and offered to correct the order, however no apologies were given. <br/><br/>Side note : she could have double checked the order first before insisting she was right, and an apology would have gone a long way. However, she did offer to replace the meals as ordered.<br/><br/>The pho seemed plentiful enough, but my rice dish was more on the skimpy side - consisted of a bowl of rice, a small dollop of shredded pork, and mini wedgie of the pork custard pie, but the pork chop was decently sized.<br/><br/>As for flavour/taste, I thoroughly enjoyed the entire meal. The pork chop could have used more of a smoky grilled flavour but the marinade was top notch. The pie was good, as the shredded pork. I had a taste of my companion's pho soup and it was good, nice sweetish flavour yet balanced by a nice salty seasoning. The slice of beef I tried was tender and intense beef flavour.<br/><br/>The squid was amazing. It was very tender (sans the tentacles) and moist. I really enjoyed the subtle smoky grill flavour infused into the flesh of the squid.<br/><br/>Overall, the food is a big 2 thumbs up (despite my dish being rather lukewarm). However, I felt the service could have used more polish.

So good. I ordered number 19. I ate every bit of it, again. <br/>Never been to Vietnam, but I love this food.

This used to be my absolute favorite pho soup in the city. I have been ordering the satay chicken soup for years. The last time I got it, it was SO oily I threw it out and went without lunch. Today I requested that they go easy on the oil, and I could tell she didn't really understand what I was asking for. Sure enough, when I opened it up, there was about a half inch of oil floating on top. So, I go hungry again, and resume my search for a good pho place in Calgary. Never again.<br/><br/><br/>-----29 Jun, 2013-----<br/><br/>I love this place! I've never had a dine-in experience, as I love grabbing it on the go because it's super quick, but it is consistently excellent. Tons of flavour, large portions, and friendly service. One of the top pho joints in Calgary, for sure!
CJG
Food was decent but not great... service was some of the worst I've seen. <br/><br/>I had beef sate pho. Good broth but the meat was clumped together so a lot of it didn't get cooked in the broth <br/>My wife ordered vermicelli with spring roll. She didn't get her spring roll and when she asked the waitress for it, the waitress couldn't understand the problem and went and got the manager. My wife's bubble tea also took FORTY MINUTES to make. We were all done eating before it showed up. Nothing was comp'd on our bill either.
Cuckoobutcool
Love this restaurant!! Especially the chicken and beef noodles, and the pancake too!
Victor B.
The welcome wasn't friendly but the server was nice. I had a noodle bowl with charbroiled pork and spring roll. The pork was very flavourful truly and properly charbroiled. The rest of the dish was fresh and tasty. I also ordered a wor wonton soup and that was a little disappointing compared to others I've had; little veggies and mostly broth. The ingredients seemed fresh however and the broth was tasty. I'd come back.
FoodJunkie
Overpriced for less than average Vietnamese cuisine. Worst service in the city in my opinion. Had a younger vietnamese server, possibly the owners daughter, she had by far the worst attitude problem I've seen in the food industry. Throwing our plates down on the table, responding to customer requests rudely, giving my party snobby looks, etc. She must hate what she does for a living with everything she's got. I will never return to this place again.
Pho Ng
Authentic Pho. I ate alot of pho, from Wpg to Vancity. And I gotta say Pho Chu The's pho is way up there with the best. It has the authentic smell and taste you look for in your vietnamese beef noodle soup. I only started eating here since a few months ago, and I've never gone anywhere else since. Highly recommended if you're a pho-eater.
Feedmeseymour
Pho so fresh should be the name. So delicious.
Jackpot
One of the better pho joints around. Great tasting beef pho. Good portion size, fast service. vermicelli dishes are up there too compared to most.
Foodie29
Love this restaurant! One of my favourites in Calgary.. Excellent service and tasty food. I always get "38b" and it is awesome. The restaurant is owned by a family and they work very hard to please their guests. My hubby and I have tried other Vietnamese restaurants in the Calgary and we think that Pho Chu the is the best.<br/><br/>The restaurant is very clean as well. Their soups are awesome as well. We've talked to the owner and she makes her own soup stocks from scatch and this is why the flavour is amazing.<br/><br/>Give it a try! You won't be disappointed.

Excellent Vietnamese food at a reasonable price

Likes it. I have had both Beef noodle and Chicken noodle here, The beef noodle is just average, but the Chicken one is delicious, probably the best in town! Firstly b/c it tastes pretty close to the real Chicken noodle I had in Vietnam and in California, secondly since beef noodle is more popular, there is not that many Pho restaurants in Calgary that actually serve chicken noodle or actually put an effort into making the broth for chicken noodle like this place. I usually order beef noodle but always go for chicken noddle when I'm here. Highly recommended!
The Skinny Food Lover
The noodles were over cooked, the meat was old and dry. I will not be going back
Whine 'n Dine
Their sate soup is not up to scratch. Tried their Vietnamese Subs. They ought to supply a bicycle to find the meat. The cilantro should be chopped. On the whole, more spices are in order.
Jay R
First time here and it's a positive review from me! The service is awesome! Food is good, I'm having pho and it's doing the job, they even cut the pepper for you. The meat might be the freshest I have had from a restaurant serving pho.
Mike
Great Vietnamese Restaurant awesome Beef sate soup very friendly and fast service
Cody Battershill
...has a great pho sate. The broth is balanced nicely between sweet and spicy and is quite delicious. One thing that I would have liked to see is more beef. It seems as if there was a bit less than in comparison to other pho restaurants pho sate soup. On a good note, the beef was very lean without any gristle at all.

We were meeting up with some friends of ours where they introduced us to Pho Chu The for really good Vietnamese food at a great rate. The location is on the west side of Macleod Trail and it could be tough to get to if you’re not sure where you’re going. I ordered the standard Rare Beef Noodle Soup as it was a day I ate dinner before having more dinner. For some reason I thought it was a lighter meal! I did finish the bowl regardless of what I ate – so clearly it was really tasty! The plate of condiments that came with our noodles were presented really nicely. The beansprouts were fresh and plump (and not brown) while the chilies were cut up for us! It was nice seeing it so pretty! My husband ordered pretty much the same thing but their spicy version! They looked like they enjoyed it thoroughly and it smelled amazing! Fragrant and flavourful – that’s what you want in a spicy dish… not just pure spice! I did try a spoonful of the soup and it was pretty amazing! You don’t need to add anything else to make it better! Overall, it was a nice place to visit! The place was really clean, the prices are average, the service is a bit slow, but they’re friendly. There was a parking lot in front of the restaurant, but if I recall, there wasn’t that many spots. We actually walked over so I don’t remember. Pho Chu The 4633 Macleod Trail SW Calgary, AB (403) 457-3455
