Review Sun Island Eatery - Calgary

C
Incredible food! We stopped in for a quick bite to eat after a long day of running around and could not be happier! The service was fast, friendly and engaging and the food is delicious. I will definitely be recommending Sun Island Eatery to all my friends and family. Thank you for your amazing hospitality. We will be back!

This is our family's favourite Chinese food restaurant, the food is always amazing.. comes out fresh, so delicious , generous portion sizes.. never disappoints. You feel so welcome from the moment you step foot inside, and the owner is so kind and friendly. Hands down the BEST :)

I want to go back and eat in the nicely decorated dining room. Then I’ll be ordering takeout because I haven’t yet tried the War Wonton Soup. Last night’s food was exactly what I wanted: flavourful and fresh and served with great friendly service. This restaurant is definitely worth the trip and easily accessed off of the McLeod Trail South. You will be glad you went there!

Want great food? Want a wide selection of items? Want superb service? Want attention to your food allergies? I really REALLY love when the choices include the thin chow menu noodles AND the thicker yummy Shanghai noodles. Go to Sun Island Eatery and then go back for more. I did and I’ll be back again!

I want to share my Father's Day dinner experience so that others don't have to deal with the same issues that we had to deal with this evening. Our favourite Chinese food restaurant in South Calgary has been Sun Island Eatery for many years. I placed an order at 5:30 pm for a dinner for two and was told that it could take 2 hours before the food would be delivered. I was okay with that and placed the order. I asked if they would have a machine to take a credit card payment which they confirmed. It was Father's Day and we ate a late brunch so 2 hours was fine. At 7:00 pm I received a phone call asking about the payment type and let them know that I had confirmed a credit card payment when I placed the order. I was then told that if I paid cash it would be another half an hour which was 2 hours from when we placed the order, but I was also told that it would take longer if I used my credit card. I agreed to pay cash to get the order as planned. At 7:45 I called to see when we would receive the order. They were going to call the driver and let us know. They also said that it would be fresh and warm when it arrived. They called back at 7:55 and told me it was going to be another 20 minutes. The restaurant is a 6 to 10 minute drive from our house. I told them that if it didn't arrive on time it would be free. At 8:15 I called again, but it arrived a few minutes later so I still paid. We got a 10% discount, but I called back to let them know that the food was cold and not fresh as they had promised, and that it was the last order that they will ever receive from us. Our other favourite is Mighty Mango. They will be our go to choice in the future. Maybe this was a one off experience, but they did not do what they said they would do on 4 occasions during this order process. Where you order from is your choice, but I thought you might appreciate a recent review when considering your choice.

Amazing Food!! We ordered grilled dumplings and they we 10/10! Wor won ton soup was incredible! Also ordered pepper hot pot beef. Also delicious. Service was excellent, price very reasonable.

Went there with the wife and little girls. Food was absolutely fantastic. I have a picky eater for a daughter but she ate a lot. The service is also beyond our expectations. The manager lady that also served our table, gave our little ones ice-cream just for being friendly at no cost. So far the best Asian/Chinese food we've had in our travels.

What personable service and delicious food: Yummy crispy ginger beef & ginger squid - tired of calamari? Try ginger squid! & pork dumplings (which are not from Costco) & rice for the ginger beef & ginger squid sauce What shall we eat next time? Sooooo many choices. Also, while we were dining in the restaurant, the takeout service was busy with many satisfied customers being happily greeted by the cheery staff. You NEED to eat this fantastic food!
Chris
Best ginger chicken in the city. The salt and pepper squid is good but over cooked half the time. They have a very busy take out and need to work on there time estimates. The last 2 times they said 35 min and it took over an hour.

The night before Christmas is the night I truly enjoy Chinese food. It started over 30 years ago. The only restaurants open on Christmas Eve were Chinese. So we started our Christmas tradition. This year we tried this location as we heard many positive reviews. The food was tasty. It was prepared quickly. The Ginger Beef was outstanding. All 8 dishes were very good. We’ll be back.

They were the best we could find in Calgary South. Especially friendly service; we loved the salt and pepper chicken. Hope we find a replacement in Cochrane!

This is my favourite Western-style Chinese food in the south. The quality is very high- vegetables are always crispy, fresh and clean-tasting. Ample nuts are provided in the cashew dishes. As well, they take pride in their restaurant and are very friendly! They take such care to ensure the fried dishes are still crispy when you get home, making a whole in the box to let out steam so the food doesn’t soak up moisture and get limp. This is my new go-to in the south.

Best Chinese food in the city. Been coming here for 9 years and I've never had better. Owner's are the nicest people and food is always ready on time and delivered quickly.

Came here on a Sunday and boy, was it busy. Service was friendly but scattered and slow. The food was good but nothing exceptional. The ginger chicken had good flavour but more batter than necessary. The portion of chicken fried rice was very generous but, again, nothing extraordinary.

As a Chinese myself, and struggled to find a good chinese restaurant in the south, the food here was great and quick! They don't have authentic chinese menu, since the population by the area is mostly caucasian, but the food I ordered were delicious and remind me of some restaurants in chinatown area! And the owner was super nice and she was even teaching my husband some cantonese which I struggled with!! Lol will definitely come back!

the best food I had. So fresh and not slimy as most Chinese food. Priced right friendly staff and gluten free item. when in Calgary that the place i like to eat.Never disappointed.

Just ordered delivery - ginger beef, mushroom fried rice, Cantonese chow mien, chicken curry. It was all SO good. Arrived quick, was piping hot and amazing. The ginger beef was tender and probably the best we've had. Awesome!

We absolutely love this Chinese food. It doesn't taste like the standard tin foil bowl food you get in other Chinese establishments. Everything we have eaten here is good. Plus there is no MSG, so you don't have to worry about your heart racing at midnight.

Ordered takeout last Friday evening for two. All the dishes were top quality. Best Chinese food in south Calgary hands down. Loved the won ton soup....so many fresh ingredients. Very yummy.

Perfect!
Lived in Calgary for 5 years and FINALLY found yummy Chinese food.
I always get the dinner for two to go.
Fresh and crisp.
So happy once I had found this place.
The lady who owns is very sweet.
She remembers your name and cares about their food.
They will always have my business,
Jw
Not good at all! Actually very disappointing. Before I continue I have to say the won ton soup was great. But way to pricy. Not only was the food over deep fried and dried out the prices are outrages for what you get...95$ by the time we received it and not a single person enjoyed any of the dishes. We had 5 dishes. Special rice, not so special, hardly any meat and tasted like the container it was served in. There was a hair in the sweet and sour pork (awsome). Even if we wanted to return any of this we couldn't because the lady who took our order sounded offended that we even called to get food. Never ever eat here again, would never recommend, and feel badly for the people who "like" this food, guys keeps looking there are better places to eat!

Best in calgary!!. We moved from a small town in Ontario with an Amazing Chinese restaurant. Since moving to Calgary, we have tried so many Chinese restaurants and ONLY sun island can compare to what we are used to. Staff are super friendly, food is delicious and they deliver!! Highly recommended!

Best hidden gem. I have been eating there since 2007 and this restaurant by far is the best. I recommend this place to everyone and it has never disappointed ANYONE!
Best salt and pepper chicken (or squid) ever!

Absolutely increadable. Very consistent, fast , never had a bad dish.
Phenomenal

Terrible service. I tried to place an order to be delivered. I was put on hold, then advised, she don't know where my location was. put on hold while she took numerous other orders instead of dealing with me. I finally had enough and hung up. Terrible business practice to take customers ahead of the customer who called in first. BTW I had a huge order and they would have had a nice tip. Too bad

Good food, poor telephone etiquette.. Each time we call to order delivery, I find the woman answering the phone to be quite rude and impatient. This has happened on more than one occasion and does not contribute to a satisfying experience. Having said that the quality cuisine has us coming back. My hope is for someone with more of a chipper demeanour field the calls from now on.

To summarize the reviews here:. Personally I love this place, I think the food is great and it usually meets all my expectations. Best ginger beef I've ever had. In my experience the more popular dishes are usually better. The dishes that are not made often can be a gamble.

However, you may notice a theme to some of the negative reviews here. If you are a special snowflake/princess, and complain about when they would like you to pay, or how delivery is sometimes later than estimated, they will not cater to your whining (rightly so). There is a difference between customer service and the 'customer is always right, even when they're wrong' attitude some people have. These things happen - and if you whine about the realities of life, or use them to push for a discount, they will tell you NO. I think this is a good thing. If you don't, you may perceive this as poor customer service.

If you are looking for really great chinese food - go here. If you expect to be waited upon hand and foot, and you are not shy about complaining about minor things - you are probably going to have a bad experience here.

Really good!!. Compared to any other chinese restaurant in the area it is by far the best!! one of the best in the city!
the honey garlic pork is amazing! and the veggies with cashews!

Go-to place. We've been going to Sun Island Eatery for the past couple of years. Love it. It's your standard Westernized Chinese food BUT with way better quality ingredients. All you have to do is go to a regular chinese restaurant and compare it with SunIsland to be able to tell what a big difference good ingredients make. The chicken at Sun Island is all white chicken breast with very little batter. It's way better than other places where you're lucky to taste any chicken amongst the large gob of deep fried batter. I love this place. It's always been delicious!

Good. It was tasty

Extreme Experience. Quite a bit of variance in the reviews...from best in calgary to worst. I have now experienced both extremes. First time..friend ordered was delivered - quick, friendly, very good food. Second time I was on my own to order and pick up - quick, very, very, friendly, very, very bad food.
When I got home I thought (now wish they had) given me the wrong meal as I had ordered almond chicken...but thought I was given fish - sans the chips. Nope. They batter a perfectly good serving of chicken, deep fry it, throw it in a container with and handful of almonds and I had some kinda sauce on the side. I tried to salvage by picking off the batter but in the end tossed it all as the sauce wasnt good either. The menu does NOT say the chicken is breaded nor have I ever in my life seen Almond Chicken prepared this way. Most disgusting Chinese dish I have ever eaten. Photo included. The vegetable dish with cashews was just ok. Steamed Rice fine.

Maybe the trick is to know what to order?

Appalling. My friend and I came into Sun Island Eatery and sat at one of the tables. We each ordered a "lunchbox" (a $5 item that includes ginger beef, rice and a dumpling), as well as two drinks. The waitress, an Asian lady who does not usually serve us, basically told us that because we weren't ordering a real menu item we had to pay before we ate. I was appalled by her rude attitude and refused to pay until after I ate, like a normal customer, despite her haggling. I will never come to this over-priced, tacky restaurant ever again.

Not too great - many better options nearby. I decided to try this place for lunch during the week and ordered the C68 vegetables/chicken in a flower. I've had this dish at a few places; the 'flower' is a bed of noodles. After a few minutes, the server came and told me that they were out of noodles and would serve the dish with rice instead. She didn't seem to be giving me a choice to change my order but I was fine with it. I thought it was strange that a Chinese restaurant could run out of noodles. The dish was average with perhaps a bit too much large onion chunks and bell peppers for my liking.

I was the only one seated in the dining room and as soon as it was midday, a lot of students came in for takeout food. Looks like this is their main target market.

It took a long time to pay and leave because of the big teenager crowd. I wasn't given a discount for not having the flower part of the dish. There are a lot of other food choices nearby. For Chinese food, Hong Kong Garden in the Shawnessy shopping area is a way better choice than Sun Island in my opinion.

Best Chinese in South Calgary!. WOW! We've tried almost every Chinese place in the south part of Calgary and FINALLY found Sun Island Eatery. The food portions and flavors are amazing and the prices aren't too bad either. We ordered take out and it was pretty busy so the wait was about 40 min but obviously that was for a good reason as the restaurant was packed and the food was well worth it. Give them a try, you wont be let down!

The best Chinese in Calgary. This is by far the best Chinese food in the city. I have lived in Sundance for over 10 years and have been going to Sun Island ever since it opened. Their prices are good, and food is even better. Anyone who doesn't like the food there has to be crazy! No other Chinese food restaurant comes close.

Thought we'd try this place because most of the reviews were positive. Well that was a mistake. Food was terrible, everything was either soggy (ie. noodles and veggies) soured (dumplings and seafood) or anything breaded had more breading than anything in it (like the salt&pepper squid, sweet&sour pork etc). Would NOT recommend this place, and am wondering if they are frequently posting ratings themselves....

Fantastic!. I have been ordering and dining at this place for a few years. It is the best chinese food in the city. (that I have tried anyway) Phenomenal ginger beef and dumplings. Sometimes the service can be a bit slow when it gets busy as they seem to only have one waitress. It is also a little pricier than some other places, but to me its worth it. I have had too many bad chinese food experiences elsewhere. Sun Island is a refreshing change and I reccomend you try it out.

Too bad.... The food was good, but customer service: nope. When food was late for delivery we called and got very rude response from the staff. Basically would not accept responsibility for their mistake putting the order in late or apologize. We didn't want want anything just them to apologize for the delay and maybe offer a small discount for the inconvenience.

That said, we really liked their lemon chicken, dumplings, cashew vegetables and ginger beef was ok, but they've likely lost us as a customer due to their rudeness.

Disappointing to not have the typical big chicken balls. Besides that, the food was amazing! Easily the best chicken fried rice I ever had. Chicken and broccoli was great. Even the sweet and sour chicken was good. Huge portions for a good price. I'd go there again in a heart beat and suggest it to everyone!

Huge portions! Their ginger.... Huge portions!
Their ginger chicken is just chicken balls in ginger sauce. Not as good as some other places. But everything else they make is vey good. Awesome for leftovers since you know youll have some. Great value considering its about the same price as anywhere else.

Excellent Food! Fast Service. Was looking for a Chinese Restaurant that did not have MSG in the food and still tasted great. I found the place! Will be getting my business.

Excellent food and service!. Great, fast and friendly service! Makes sure you get what you order and it's the freshest, best tasting Chinese food I've ever had!

Great as always. Had take out last week, and it was excellent as usual. Service a little slow, but the place was hopping and lots of take out going out the door. This is one of the best chinese places in the South

Love it!!

The best Chinese food in the city! Always quick and fresh. Not over-battered and greasy. I love the $5 lunch box - just picked it up and had lunch at the lake!

Manipulated score?. Thought we'd try a restaurant with 95% rating.

If you like exta grease on or in all dishes, mismatched decor, stir fried cucumber in your dish, and burnt egg foo young then this place is for you.

Even when we pointed out the cucumber to our server, she thought it was zucchine nothing was done, only laughed about it.

Not to mention this pleasure was $50 for two, with only tea to drink.

This is worst chinese food we have ever had and find the rating highly suspect. They even have a sign on the door mentioning the ratings............Beware!

Best food! My favorite Chinese restaurant in Calgary! I always make sure to tell everyone to check it out!

Best Chinese Food in the South. Terrific food. Really busy on the weekends so be prepared to wait for your order unless you order early. Well worth the wait though. Especially the ginger beef, dumplings and sweet n' sour chicken. All so very yummy!

By far the Freshest tasting we have had in quite some time. The vegetables are crisp and firm and the containers Full. We have gone back twice since our first experience 2 months ago and have not been disappointed Give them a try!

Best Chinese Food in the South end!!! Hands down better than any restaurant ever.

BEST CHINESE FOOD IN CALGARY. Sun Island is by far the best Chinese restaurant in Calgary! The food is always delicious, quick and reasonably priced for the amount they give you. I will never eat anywhere else now that I have had Sun Island.

The joint is outstanding. The food is to die for.

Food's decent but expensive. We ordered delivery last night, we were told 45mins to an hour, took at least and hour 15mins and food was barely warm, had to reheat it. The ginger beef was good but nothing overly special, the lemon soo gai was very greasy, not so good, cashew chicken was awesome, steamed rice was overly sticky, szechuan chow mein was ok, strange sauce, mixed veggies were normal. Was very shocked when delivery finally showed up and the bill was $74! 5 dishes & rice for 2 is usually around $55-60. Overall I would consider eating here again, but likely in the restaurant rahter than dilvery but if I'm in that area I'd prefer Bill's everytime. The food really doesn't justify the additional $2 average per dish.

Dinner for two ! Best won ton soup in town.

Amazing service. We order from there all of the time, and delivery is really fast, always faster than they say. They remember who we are and always friendly.

Decent food, poor service. Beware of the red headed waitress.
