Review Katsuten - Calgary

Hands down my favourite sushi place in Calgary. Their rolls aren’t over saturated with rice and the ingredients are pretty fresh. I can tell because the soft shell grab and the scallops did not taste fishy at all. I loved the black fish eggs on the hidden dragon rolls. I would definitely come back again.

A great neighbourhood sushi restaurant worth making the trip to. Had lunch here by chance over the holiday, as it was the only place open in the area. I will definitely be back. The sashimi was fresh with generous portion sizes, the rolls were great and not loaded with rice. The tempura was crispy and light. The prices are decent.

Great service in this hidden gem restaurant. At 5pm on a weekday, the restaurant was not too busy. There are about 7 tables available in the restaurant. The owners were attentive and polite. The menu is elegant and organized to look at. Food came quickly and hot. Katsu were crunchy and plentiful. I enjoyed the dynamite roll as well.

This was really good! I eat a lot of sushi. In Vancouver and Japan. Let’s face it YYC doesn’t have a lot of sushi game. This little gem was pleasantly surprising. Their Crispy Spicy Salmon Roll was really good! They lightly battered and fried the roll so it was slightly warm and crispy on the outside. Yum! The sashimi was melt-in-your-mouth. If I wasn’t so full I would have ordered more. The service was excellent. The ambience is a small area with maybe 7 tables. It’s not fancy but we don’t always need fancy. It was interesting to eat sushi with 80s music playing but we didn’t mind because we love retro music. Lol. Definitely try it out! The price is right too. Dinner for two adults was around $68 and we were full! We will be back for sure.

If you are looking for delicious and cheap sushi - that's the place. Small, nothing fancy, straight up street food eatery with great options of sushi sashimi and etc. Salmon lover set is a great order for 2. If you are in that area don't look further, visit and enjoy. Recommending 👍

I honestly couldn't decide what I wanted to eat between the 3, so I got all 3 dishes. Was absolutely amazing. The coating on the fried stuff was so addicting. Would love to try the rest of the stuff on the menu I didn't get to eat. Looking forward to my next visit!

Some of the best value in town, when it comes to Japanese food. If you're a fan of rolls or Katsu, this is a fantastic place for lunch and dinner. Their rolls are large and consist of high quality ingredients. They have very little filler/rice and taste great! Their Katsu with curry is crispy, rich, and moist. My wife and I are usually stuffed after sharing these two items and take whatever we can't finish home with us.

This was our second time getting take out. Once again it was fantastic. Yam and avocado rolls were so creamy. Rice was perfect and the rolls were so large. They also put all of your order in a platter and arrange it so nicely. Great value for money! This is our new favourite sushi restaurant!
Hitting The Sauce
It was L’s birthday on Saturday. I asked him where he wanted to go for lunch. He said no where far and something warm. I reminded him of Katsuten, which is a five-minute walk from our house. For this post, let’s listen to Shape of You by Ed Sheeran, with a dance choreographed by Kyle Hanagami.

Hands down one of my favourite places in Calgary. I crave it on the weekly! If I lived closer I would be here every week. Cutlets are crispy and good sized. The lemon salad is so refreshing and delicious. Wish I could have this sauce for my house. Potato croquettes are also one of my favourites here. I have yet to try something I don't like. Only downside to this place is that it is extremely small, less than 8 tables. Waitresses are friendly and when you have leftovers they are very attentive when packing your food up. They have pieces of paper to separate the food so nothing gets soggy.

If you are ever craving meat and rice, this is the place! Their pork cutlets are light/crispy on the outside, and juicy on the inside. Service is superb here as well. I personally would have preferred the dishes to be a bit less saucy though.

Katsuten is certainly a hidden gem, tucked away in a strip mall and serving some of the best katsu I've had. I arrived on a Friday evening and the restaurant was already packed, with a line quickly forming. We were quickly seated by the incredibly friendly staff. Inside, the small restaurant is very welcoming (and pretty adorable), with sunny walls and big windows. After pouring over the menu for awhile, I decided to order the Okonomi-Katsu ($15.90), and my friends got the Katsu Don ($13.90) and Chicken Katsu ($15.90). The miso soups that came with each of our orders arrived quickly, and they were definitely some of the best I've had in Calgary restaurants: umami-rich while not being overly salty, and served with just the right amount of tofu and spring onion. Our main courses soon arrived, and portions are very generous. The two katsu courses came with a delicious shredded cabbage salad: crisp, refreshing, and served with an addictively creamy and tangy dressing. The Okonomi-Katsu came heaped with fish flakes, curling from the steam of the katsu, and was drizzled with japanese mayo and okonomi sauce. And I have to say, the katsu here is pretty incredible. The breading is so impossibly light and crisp, it's almost like eating air (albeit golden, perfectly seasoned air), and the meat inside is tender, moist, and full of flavour. The dipping sauce that comes with the katsu is also delicious (I unashamedly ate it just with rice). I also tried the Katsu Don - a marriage of crispy batter and creamy egg all bathed in a scrumptious sauce that had just a hint of sweetness. One of the best meals I've had in a long time, I will undoubtedly be back to try everything on the menu.

Food has improved since opening day and everything was super tasty during my most recent visit. I've tried a few different dishes so far, food has been definitely improving. Cute little joint, it's more of a place to hang out with a few friends as it is small.

Good but not great.

I found the food looks better than it tasted. The meat of the tonkatsu weren't very flavourful. We got the original and the okonomaki flavoured one (forgot the name. I'm the worst for that). The outer coating of the tonkatsu was different than I imagined. It was more flaky and crispy than crunchy. It almost had like a disintegrating crisp than a lot of bite/body like Korean fried chicken.

We also got the cheese tonkatsu which was actually my favourite of the three we had. The cheese was less stringy than I imagined tho.

The cream curry udon was really good. The cream with the curry paired well. I didn't imagine that combo would go well. But it was great. I felt like you didn't get too much tho. Not very much stuff In the curry beyond the udon but even then it wasn't a lot of udon.

I found the price was also a bit high for what you get. We all left still hungry after spending nearly 20$ a person.

Service was great tho!

Nice new place to try with very reasonable portions, the food is very well presented and tasty as the pork was not dry at all and the breading was not soggy; the flavours go well with each other and the rice is cooked well.

Service was good and I was not left raising my hand or calling over for service.

General atmosphere was fine some of the music was not my style but it was not grating and the decor was nice and simple.

Nice place with tasty food and good service. The katsu curry was tender and the curry had nice flavour just right and not overpowering. Comfortable seating as well.

Cute little joint. Definitely good place to think about if you're going on a date. Service was good, environment was nice and the food was great.

I had this mashed potato on top of soup / Curry thing and it was good. The takoyaki and the gyoza were on point. The pork cutlet was covered in an interesting crisp that was unlike any other Japanese place I've tried so far.

They had this bottled peach soda which was really good too.

Definitely coming back to try more of the menu.

Very cute little restaurant! The service was amazing and the food was 10/10. They get their supplies from local shops in Calgary. And it definitely adds to the quality. Must try their cheese katsu!

Small little restaurant in our neighborhood. Came into Thursday night one hour before they closed and it was not busy at all. Friendly service and food came out fast. Started with takoyaki and it was crispy and hot. Got the Gyu Don and it came with miso soup. I added a bit of soy sauce to add a little bit more flavour. Finished with the chocolate pear dessert. Overall had a pleasant meal, would go back and try the katsu and udon.

Update: definitely try their dons. So flavourful
And filling.

I came on a Friday evening. It wasn't very busy and was smaller than I had thought it would be. Nonetheless, the service was superb. The waitress was very friendly and always made sure to check on us and how we were doing. I tried the creamy whipped curry udon and the pork katsu curry. Both were very good. The whipped udon was very interesting and I enjoyed it a lot. The curry katsu wasn't that bad as well, it was fried nicely. Next time, I would like to come back for the cheese katsu.

Best tonkatsu I have ever eaten!! The outside is so crispy and the meat inside is so soft and juicy. The lotus rood salad was also very interesting and tasty.

I can't wait to go back!

Everything about our experience eating at Katsuten was great - from the delicious food to the outstanding service we received. I had the Okonami Katsu - the breading was perfectly crispy and the bonito flakes elevated the taste. Definitely coming back to try the rest of the menu!

Going to Katsuten was definitely one of the best restaurant experiences I've had in Calgary in recent memory! We ordered the okonomi-katsu, the loin katsu with curry, and the potato croquette with curry. The pork katsu was perfectly fried, with a nice flaky crust; the potato croquettes were nicely crispy on the outside and smooth and mash potato-like on the inside; and the curry hit exactly the right spot, thick and nicely seasoned, wonderfully accompanied by the rice. On a cold winter's day, Katsuten was absolutely perfect, from the genuinely attentive service to the clean, nicely-lit ambience. If you are wondering where to eat, look no further -- this is a unique little spot that makes the Calgary restaurant scene a little more vibrant and a little more interesting. Can't wait to go back!!

Neat, small restaurant in this area that always seems to be deprived of good Asian food! This place definitely adds some flavour to the neighbourhood! The pork chop was super thick, crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside. The curry was awesome. And that cheese! Omg that pork chop stuffed with cheese was just divine. Definitely will be hitting this joint more often since it's so close to my house!

Really tasty curry katsu rice and oyako don. The katsu is in a very well seasoned batter, very crispy and very good flavoured Japanese curry. It is not dry as compared to other sushi joints. Oyako don also has very well seasoned rice and chicken, egg was also cooked very well.

We went for lunch on Friday and had the katsudon. It was tender and delicious! Service excellent and attentive. My only criticism was the rice was not that hot and it wasn't Japanese rice! So it fell apart with the sauce. I would prefer Japanese rice that stays sticky and holds together, especially for the price. If the dish was below $10 I could see them using a cheaper rice, but it was $15. Please consider using a proper Japanese or even Calrose rice. Other than that, it was excellent!
