Found this place tonight, while looking for my hotel. I got a traditional poutine, a donair hot dog and a cream soda screamer...it was very very delicous! Best poutine I've had in a very long time.
The staff were also very friendly and service was quick.
The staff was super cool with my kids (ages 5 and 7), the food came out fast, and my Philly cheese steak poutine rocks! My daughters are enjoying their poutine and think the staff on shift right now are really nice.
who doesn't love poutine??? the service is excellent!! super friendly and delicious food!! I will be back again!!
Always open late on the weekends when you need it the most!! :) Great staff and vibe!
My youngest son is a poutine-lover and Big Cheese is his go-to place!
I'd never tried poutine before, and tried The Big Cheese on a whim while I was in Canada. I'm now fundamentally depressed that poutine isn't readily available everywhere. I can't believe I lived 29 years without this place. Great job, guys.
I wish I could like this more than 5 stars. This place knows their poutine!!
As a South African having Poutine for the first time, I feel The Big Cheese was more than enough reason for me to love it
Just got the donair poutine amazing XD would totally get another
Huge servings, lots of options, decent prices, good service!
Still the best damn poutine I've ever had. When will there be one in Toronto so I don't have to come here to get some???
Had the Notorious PIG...excellent....except maybe next time I'm hung over...a small portion will do! Lol
Only one thing to say about this place AMAZING
Great concept,
Great tasty food,
Great logo,
Grand Slam
If you're looking for fancy fine dining this isn't your spot. However, if you want bomb poutine that is hot, fresh, quick, and tasty then Big Cheese Poutinerie is a place you need to go. The very small but we'll laid out restaurant provides seating, funky decor, and very friendly staff. When you walk in you basically are taken straight to the order counter (so you might want to think ahead of what you will get). They have a large variety of poutine as well so hot dogs. I opted for a traditional poutine, they only have one size but price varies for how complex your poutine is. At 6.99 for the traditional I got a big enough portion that left me full and satisfied. Get grub food if your out drinking in downtown or looking for some late night grease šš½.
I recommend this place for:
Food, quality, price, and service
The Montreal smoked meat is killer. And the large size is large. I am trying to finish it.....might have to tap out. The GF had a small donair one and she couldnāt finish. If you want a quick bite and are really hungry come here....so good. And itās fast and fresh. Definitely coming back for another poutine when Iām in cowtown.
The food and service here are awesome! I have been here quite a few times since they opened and only 1 poutine did I not like the taste of the sauce, but the rest in my group did so it as just a personal preference for me. Bought a groupon the other day thinking it was for this location but sadly it was for the kensington location so I cancelled it and will just go spend the money cus it is worth it at this location. Going back to get my yamtastic poutine, mmm...
I've only come here a couple times at like 3am after a night on the town. It's been satisfying - not out of this world, but pretty solid, as far as my limited experience with poutine goes. I always choose the regular standard poutine and haven't been disappointed - it's very tasty. It's pretty busy as well, even in the middle of the night, but you don't wait long for your food. You may have trouble finding a table though, as it's small inside.
Being a vegetarian on a trip to Canada, the only place I found Veg.Poutine is here. And I loved it. A tiny place but yummy poutine. Would like to have again!
Soo many options makes it hard to decide, one day I'll try them all. Lots of flavour and filling! Staff is great although when it's busy it gets a little cramped but other than that it's a good place to go if you're wanting some good poutine!
Stopped here quickly one night on our way home. Boyfriend got the Philly cheesesteak poutine and enjoyed it. I wanted to get the Montreal smoked meat but they were out of smoked meat so got the beef with peppercorn sauce instead. Didn't seem to work well. The caramelized onions were too sweet with the peppered gravy and salty cheese curds. The beef was oddly dry and had a weird taste to it. The fries were also quite sweet I found. Ordered the corn fritters as well but the guy forgot to include them in my bag so when I finally realized I had to book it back there before they closed. They did feel bad and I should have remembered but I think they should have too considering I was the only one in the shop. I do want to come back here and try the smoked meat one and hopefully raise their rating.
Great friendly staff. Poutine is quite good, one of the few places I have found in the west that serve gravy hot enough to actually melt your curds! Portion was perfect and I think it was a fair price. I had the small traditional. Will go back to try others.
Super friendly staff didn't mind checking ingredients for us and making recommendations. The portions are huge! Three of us shared a large. We tried the Nacho poutine and an apple pie milkshake. Was awesome.
While the service is hit or miss, what can you expect for a meal that costs less than $10? A huge selection of poutine is what awaits you, from traditional to vegan, and beef and pork in between. It's hot, full of flavour, and satisfying. Great choice after skiing or late night drinks. Hot dogs as well for those who want something different.
What Canadian doesn't love poutine? Best poutine I've ever had, definitely would recommend the perogie poutine. I like the atmosphere, and the fact that you can add more seasoning if you choose to do so.
The poutine was amazing and fast . But the lady at the desk was wearing a very provocative shirt. I almost wanted to leave. I came to eat poutine. Not to see a peep show. Very unprofessional. I couldn't consentrate on the menu with "hooters" in my face.
Poutine is fantastic...poutine with loads of extra toppings is fantastic-er. This place will make you one if the best traditional poutines you will ever eat, but they will also fantastically and deliciously disgrace the term. The menu has a type of poutine to suit anyones tastes and the portions will fill any belly. Big Cheese is a definite recommendation.
I finally got the app so I'm reviewing - even thought it's been a while. I used to go to Big Cheese at least 1-2 times a week when I lived in Calgary. I always got friendly service, the food was fresh, hot, and the restaurant was always clean. I miss this place!
My fave was the vegetarian (minus the salsa).
Fast service. Clean place. Fresh flavours. We will go back. A large is more than enough for two people to share Generous serving size.
Another great experience at the Big Cheese. I am from the east and grew up on poutine. This is the closest I've come to good poutine out here. The service is excellent, and the poutine authentic. I'll be honest, I stick with the basics, but the basics are awesome!!!
They give out candy and stickers to my kids. My 2 boys won't stop talking about this place. We were a bit overwhelmed by the huge menu but the guy behind the counter explained all the options to us and we decided to get just basic poutines for our 5 and 7 year olds. While we waited for our poutines our boys were offered stickers and told if they ate all there lunch they could get a surprise. After my wife and I allowed it he brought out a bowl of suckers and various candy they could pick from. Fantastic food and great experience. More places should be this family friendly.
Wow tastes like home (montreal). Poutine was the best west of home. Great atmosphere and super fun and friendly staff. Also I think it has the cleanest bathrooms I've seen on 17th ave. Have to try the monthly special for sure. Its not only fantastic but it's organic as well.
Awesome!!. I had a poutine at this restaurant today for the first time yesterday. I had the veggie one and it was awesome! I was born in Calgary, but I go to university out in Quebec, so I've had a lot of poutine from the source and I can honestly say that this is the best I've ever had!!
Keep up the awesome poutine work!
(also, thanks so much for making a veggie one! I really appreciate that!!)
Nothing wrong with that.... Didn't try this one for a while because 17th isn't my normal haunt. Had heard both good and bad about it. Went with a large Notorious p.i.g. and thought it was really well done. Obviously not authentic poutine but they nailed the fine balance of fries/gravy/cheese/toppings. I liked the sweetness in the pulled pork with the richness of the gravy. The bacon and sausage didn't hurt either. The very last bite had a little bit of everything on it which is the way it's supposed to be. No dry fries or excess gravy at the end. Going to try some of their other options but for now this is a solid "like".
Stumbled upon this one day, and I fell in love.. love the variety! Delicious!! Always crave it when i'm in the area
Amazing!. My boyfriend and I have been going to the Big Cheese pretty much since it opened. We now always order the traditional poutine. The large is big enough for both of us! Others that were good that we've tried were the italian poutine and also the smoked meat poutine.
Also, they have a good selection of condiments and things after you get your meal that you can add to your poutine: mustard, chilis, saracha sauce, vinegar, etc.. etc...
The first few months, I felt like their fries weren't cooked enough, but last few times we've gone, it has been simply satisfying.
I was born & raised in MTL, and although this does not taste exactly like the poutines back home, they use real squeaky cheese, their gravy is good, and fries are really decent.
And get a pickled egg while you're there! Nice way to finish it off!
Scotish curry was spot on. Nice to have some options with your poutine.
curry with chicken was mild but had a nice flavour. blended well with the poutine.
i would order it again.
I was absolutely thrilled to find a place in Calgary that serves vegetarian poutine! The fries were perfectly crispy, the cheese curds were perfectly squeeky, and the vegetarian gravy was just awesome! I will definitely be coming back here when I am shopping on 17th Avenue!
Perogies + Poutine = :). I've only been to Big Cheese once, on my stumbles home on a Saturday night, but it was fun and tasty! We tried Cluster Buck (bbq chicken and carmelized onions) and Perogie Poutine (perogies, sour cream, bacon, carmelized onions) . The latter was definitely the winner amongst the crowd I was with, whoever thought to unite perogies and poutine is a genius.
The large is LARGE - large enough for 3 people. Cast your low-fat and low-sodium diets aside and dig in as an after-the-bar snack. I don't know, especially after reading some other reviews, that Big Cheese would be a good option for sober eats, but it's lined up outside the door in the wee hours of Sunday morning.
TIP: If you happen to have leftovers: refrigerate and pan fry until crisp to sub in for breakfast "home fries" the next morning ;) It works!
Pricey and tasty and enormous big size.
Okay maybe not pricey if you factor in that I could only eat half a big box...
Poutine.. Was good food but not great value.
I guess that is part of being on 17th Ave.
I would suggest at least going once but sharing a large with another person.
Good poutine:). I ordered the notorious b.i.g.and my wife got the nachos poutine. I ordered the large which was alot. Lol. Overall good poutine. Great flavor, good amount of cheese curds, sausage and gravy. Friendly staff and not too busy. We went right after lunch time on a wednesday. Unless you are realllly hungry. Order the regular size.
Okay Food Horrible Female Counter Staff
Best Poutine in Calgary!. My husband and I really enjoyed the Big Cheese Poutinerie- a Montreal quality establishment it is not, but it is exceptional for a poutine place in Cowtown. I had the smoked meat poutine and thought it was delicious and that the grainy mustard gave the dish some much needed acidity. Their variety of sodas was a really nice change of pace as well. I've certainly recommended this place to friends and will return to try some more of their specialty poutines in the future!
Worth the trip. Loved it. Highly recommend the corned beef poutine with a nice dill pickle. Nice laid back atmosphere.

Poutine is a norm.. My friends, boyfriend and I had arrived at The Big Cheese after an insane craving.
My boyfriend and I had both gotten the Normal Regular Poutine,
as we are first time eaters at The Big Cheese, and we found the fries to be a bit on the burnt side,
the gravy was a tad too plain, but the cheese was thick, melty, perfect amount of salt and delicious.
I will return, only to try a different poutine and give them a second chance.
Overall, I enjoyed it.
But It wasn't anything special, or memorable.
Not so bad.... Craving something a little on the salty/greasy side took my 2 companions and I here on a Sunday afternoon (which makes parking much less stressful). The Hogzilla & Pigasus options were pretty tastey. The Buffalo Chicken certainly smelled good, but too much Franks Hot Sauce overwhelmed it. Still, we liked the unique choices & would try it again.
YUMMMMMY Those pickles are amazing. Look kinda dirty while eating it though. lol. Need a knife.
50/50 chance of food being good. First time I went I got the Philly cheese steak poutine which turned out to be a mistake, the fries were soggy and the steak was bland. The second time I got the traditional poutine and this time the fries were done just right. The condiments they provide at the side counter were a nice touch, specifically the mexican hot sauce. Poutine with cheese curds are hard to find in this city, and I would definitely go to the Big Cheese again.
So to start, while drinking all afternoon... We ended up here as our last stop. I had the peppercorn beef poutine and it was dead sexy. (beer goggles) prices seemed right and it hit the drunken spot.. so to all my fellow beer drinkers, you have to try this place out!
I immediately fell in love with this place ! The name of the restaurant says it all & the food too . My favorite is the pigasus & it's divine ! It's good with ketchup & hot sauce :D overall great experience for a first time going . Will be coming back soon again .
Big Smile!. I actually really really enjoyed Big Chesse! Good prices, good portions and i left pretty stasified.
I went early on a saturday evening and didn't wait too long. I can see this place getting rowdy later on in the night. The menu board was a tad bit confusing but the clerk easly helped with my confusion.
My only compliant, is minor.
Of course being quebcious, i ordered the Montreal Smoked meat poutine. I found it a tadddd bit salty and the smoked meat pieces were large and nothing like typical smoke meat i'm used to. However, really filling and a great late night treat. Defiently would like to come back again and try some of the other menu selections!
Love this place!!. I had the Breakfast poutine & omfg!! It was like a party in my mouth lol comes with scrambled eggs, bacon, cheese curds, gravy AND hollandaise!!!! My bf ended up getting the Philly Cheese steak which was also fantastic since I tried a bite of his. Great service and great food! Highly recommended! :)
Oh my goodness..love love love. I just have to say that I just had the most delicious experience. I had the greek souvlaki monthly feature and uh yeah, oh my goodness SOOOO GOOD! You have to try it. Atmosphere was cute and comfortable, staff was so friendly and helpful. I highly recommend you check this place out. Yummy.
Anti-maskers are mad at this business for following government guidelines hahaš¤£. Make it make sense . This place is phenomenal food is very filling. You just have to make sure which poutine is best suited for you
Nice decor, friendly staff and very good poutine. Had a large traditional that fed 1 adult and 2 kids. Lots of variety on the menu.
They have gourmet hot dogs too which was a nice to find. Fun food.
Great portion sizes and lots of toppings. The potatos are also really good.
A solid poutine.
Crunchy fries, smooth gravy, and gooy cheese curds.
The traditional poutine is a great standard dish.
If you are feeling adventurous you can also try their various variations.
