Haru Sushi Bar is located at McKenzie Towne Ave SE Calgary, which is 10 minutes away from my home. 2017. 12.01. After the Christmas Concert, my boyfriend took me to Haru Sushi Bar for dinner. It was our first time, came to this restaurant. Before we came here, we did research online. I found that Haru Sushi has a great rating on both Google and Zomato review. In this way, my boyfriend decided to take me here for dinner.
We arrived the restaurant around 7:30 pm, which was right at the dinner time. The restaurant was full and busy. Luckily, we still found a table. After we sat down, the server brought the menu and drinks our table. The menu looks very fancy and has pictures on it, which is more convenience for us. The prices of food are a little bit expensive. We had CALAMARI, TERIYAKI BEEF, and Two special sushi rolls to share. The food came out fast and fresh. The Calamari was very fresh and soft different from what we thought. But, the taste of it was so salty. Beef Teriyaki was grill beef and mixed vegetable which is different from what we ate before too, but the taste was great. Two special rolls were tasted decent. Nothing excited comparing with special sushi rolls in any of sushi restaurants in Vancouver. We were a little bit disappointed with our meal. The server was very nice and friendly. The environment was clean and peaceful. In summary, it was a new experience having sushi in Calgary.
Food is always amazing & tea is hot and service is always fast and with a smile !!
Soups are piping hot and taste amazing,
Always a place to enjoy 😊
Haru is my go-to sushi spot in the SE. Many evenings of takeout or a quick roll have been had. The sushi is consistently well-executed. Tonight, as had salmon Sashimi (three thick pieces), avocado tempura (hot so you know it was freshly fried), salmon-avocado roll, dynamite roll and spicy salmon crunch roll. These are some of my favourite rolls. The dynamite has avocado in it, and the tempura shrimp is they use is fresh, not stale like I have sensed at other places. The spicy salmon crunch has a cereal texture crunch to it with fried bits inside and dollops of spicy mayo on the top. If you are looking for a place to eat good quality sushi in the south, this is your best bet. My other favourite spot is Oishi if you are seeking AYCE.
Very fast service and the staff were friendly.
Drinks came as soon as we sat down and they gave us enough time to figure out what we wanted to order. Repeated our order back to us (which is always nice) and food came quickly.
Cheese tempura was good (never seen it before) kind of like the Japanese version of mozzarella sticks. Cheese was gooey and batter was sweet and crunchy.
Golden spicy tuna roll was tasty. Was covered in tempura batter so added a nice crunch. Sauce was flavourful.
Beef tataki was good. Very thinly sliced with green onions and sauce on top.
Nice that it's so close to us. Can see myself coming back for more since they have so many menu options.
***still fast....ok for quick lunch. Their lunch combos have a lot of california roll. Rainbow roll is a california roll topped with shrimp, salmon and tuna with lovely golden and orange topiko....friendly service****fast and fresh. We enjoyed the smaller rolls. . Avocado and dynamite rolls. Assorted tempura was kinda greasy but tasty. We enoyed the rainbow roll. I wish they leave the tea pot on the table. I asked if they only had one teapot and I think she said yes. Lol. Tables r a bit narrow. Bathrooms are clean. I did get my tea refilled frequently.
I've been eating at the same sushi place a lot lately and decided to have a bit of a change. This place is awesome. Tried some different sushi rolls and a few different appetizers. Only thing I wasn't fond of was the tempura avocado. I thought prices were reasonable and it's a great place. Lots of space but filled up really quickly when we got there (right at 5pm).
Haru in McKenzie is the restaurant's second location, and I have to say that I have been pretty impressed by the consistency across the three different storefronts (Springborough, Mckenzie, Keynote). Once again, the service was fantastic, I found the prices fair, and left feeling satisfied with a belly full of sushi! For a longer review, check out my thoughts on the Keynote location!
Staff are friendly, and food always comes out quickly. Rolls here are quite good, but the sashimi is even better. I come quite often and the only bad thing I've had was the spider roll, as the softshell crab was too chewy. Would recommend the tempura and stampede rolls.
Been here during lunch hours and their service is fast..Its quite busy but you'll always end up getting a table cos its a decent size restaurant. I have no particular favorite at this restaurant as all their sushis are prepared well, fresh and delicious. Definitely one of my favorite restaurants for sushi in Calgary.
Haru is so consistent. The sushi is always so fresh! Such a great price too....
And eating in is also a nice experience- the staff is always efficient and friendly.
Haru is always a great choice for sushi. The food is always top notch and the service is usually pretty good. Hopefully you can go to Haru when it is not so busy as it can get a little hectic. The prices are reasonable for the area but definitely higher than some other not so far away options. I have always left Haru happy and willing to return.
Good sushi. Outside of Kinjo or Sakana in the core, this is likely the best on this side of the city..
Whats with the bad reviews?!. I am not sure where all of the horrible reviews of this place are coming from! Maybe you are all reviewing the wrong location. We eat here very often as we live right in New Brighton and it is convenient. Sometimes we eat in and sometimes we take out. The inside of Haru is clean and modern. The food is always hot and fresh. We LOVE the tempura here, always comes out piping hot with a light and crispy batter. Rolls are made well which I appreciate. Food always comes out fast so you are not waiting forever which is great. I usually order tea and there is almost always someone walking around with the tea pot to fill it up if i need a refill. We have NEVER been rushed out of here, charged auto gratuity or given the wrong order when picking up, and we pick up A LOT. We will continue to come here for our sushi fix whenever the mood strikes!
This restaurant is an excellent combination of price, quality and service. A real hidden gem and it blows my mind every time I come in here that there isn't a lineup out the door. Highly, highly recommended.
Tasty. I had the terryaki beef with rice and tempura shrimp. The beef was soo good, not what I was expecting but very tasty, can't wait to go back and try some other dishes.
My fiancé and I came to Haru as we live in Deer Run and there are no sushi places down there except Edo (no thanks)
We like to try different places so we checked the reviews and gave this place a try.
The decor and atmosphere was very nice, as soon as I walked in I felt welcomed and comfortable. The staff were incredibly friendly and very attentive.
We ordered a whole bunch of different sushi rolls and every one was delicious and tasted distinct from each other. I've been to a few sushi places where it all tasted a little too similar.
The Philadelphia roll was really lovely, my favourite. I love the different sauces we had with each roll and the fish tasted fresh.
I would definitely recommend this place!
At home. My wife and I go to Haru whenever we are down in the area (and when we feel like having Japanese). What we love the most is the people, they really make us feel at home. The staff is friendly and want you to enjoy your experience there. When our child can eat sushi for the first time, guess where we are taking him!
Food is great and the quality is really good. I really enjoy their tuna tataki and the deep fried squid. In terms of sushi, nigiri and sashimi, the softshell crab roll is also good but can be big for some people's mouth. The nigiri is really good, they use the right amount of wasabi for my taste. The sashimi portions will leave you satisfied in terms of size and delighted in terms of quality.
If you have a limited budget, stick to the combos they have. If you don't, then adventure through the menu but be ready to pay (but trust me, you will not leave feeling you got ripped off).
You won't regret eating at Haru.
Great fresh sashimi and wonderful service.
Great food... Odd service as items come at different times so you may end up watching your friend eat first :) just request to have it all come at once. Make reservations on Fridays or be prepared to wait 45 plus minutes.
Very good with lots of options for people who don't like sushi too.
Good sushi! Friendly staff! I've lived in the area for the past 4 1/2 years and most restaurants are middle of the road chains. This is a refreshing change with a food variety of dishes. Even for the foody who isn't necessarily into sushi; they have a great variety of fully cooked Japanese foods. Also a few things for the more adventurous. I would defintely recommend trying at least once.
Worth Every Penny. I very highly recommend Haru! The service was beyond excellent, the atmosphere is great and the food was fantastic. I love that is conveniently located in the suburbs and is a nice change from the chain restaurants we are surrounded by. It is a little expensive, but good sushi anywhere is a little expensive because it is worth it for quality food. If you haven't alreay been, go now!
My husband and I stop in frequently for a bowl of udon and perhaps some sushi. (The agedashi tofu appetizer is delicious!) The service is usually great though sometimes a little distracted, and on a rare evening the kitchen might be slow, but generally it's fine. We think the food is worth the occasional snafu there, and they are trying hard to be more consistently efficient. If you like Japanese food and live in the SE, give it a try.
Great place! Went here for lunch and had a great meal. Decor is very nice, service was excellent, & food was yummy! Pricier than Ichizen which is also nearby but has more variety. Definitely going back!
I ordered from Haru tonight for takeout, my first experience with the restaurant. They handled a substitution with no problem, were ready when I arrived and food was packaged very well - no miso leaks! Fish katsu and yam tempura were lovely, not greasy or overbattered - the 2 year old devoured them and finished off most of the nicely sticky plain rice. Agedashi tofu was just crisp enough (I hate soggy agedashi) and the portions of fish on assorted sushi combo were quite large, comparable to Vancouver. Miso so-so - stayed hot and not over salted but nothing special. Overall, great introduction to Haru! Welcome to McKenzie Towne!
Hello Haru. I think that all us die hard sushi lovers can agree that finding that perfect sushi restaurant, especially in land-locked locales, can be the ultimate challenge. But I am here to tell you to look no further than Haru Sushi & Grill-- Phew, what a relief!
Not only was this the best sushi I may have ever had (and I hail from the BC coast so that's saying something) but I also had three somewhat picky sushi people with me who all emphatically agreed. I will need to go back a second time to ensure the experience wasn't a clever fluke on their part but for now I remain pleasantly blind to all other sushi restaurants.
Now for the specifics. Walking into the open concept modern dining area I was glad to see they didn't dispense with the sushi restaurant standard that puts the sushi chefs out in the open behind the sushi bar. Not only is it much easier to tell them how incredible their food is on your way out but it's comforting to be able to see the people who prepare your food is it not? The servers and hosts were delightful and prompt with their service but seeing as there were three other tables in the dining room besides ours, I wouldn't expect less.
We ordered an assorted tempura which was fairly standard fare, the shrimp were tender and the vegetables still had that crunch telling you that the dish has been cooked-- oops, deep fried-- to perfection.
As for the rolls, we ordered a few of the smaller ones namely the Dynamite, Smoked Salmon and Creamy Scallop roll which was to die for and at $7-8 each for six pieces a total steal. And then come the "Haru Special Rolls" or as I like to call them "Giant Extremely Special 8+ Bites of Heaven Rolls." We ordered the Aburi Tuna and Spider rolls, the latter being a personal favorite when I've visited other establishments but Haru's version put all other Spider rolls to shame and made converts out of everyone else at the table.
The sashimi was fresh and chilled to that perfect temperature that bites your tongue but doesn't hurt your teeth and we were amazed at the portion sizes of Tuna! Ordering two portions of Tuna and one portion of Toro, I'd have to say that while they were both delicious the Tuna is much better value for the money. Three huge slabs of tuna per order made me wish I had a scale to see how much of the fish we actually consumed-- probably most of it!
All in all, four people ate 6 rolls of varying size, an order of tempura and all that gorgeous fresh tuna and washed it down with one souse ordering a large beer and the rest having tea and water and the grand total was $105. Very reasonable for the experience we all can't stop talking about. When you visit be sure to grab a take out menu on your way out as you will probably want more tomorrow. Well done Haru, I for one hope you are here to stay.
Huge Portions. This was my 1st trip to Calgary in a while. Haru Sushi & Grill has just opened recently. We ordered a Haru Platter for all of us. I ordered the Chicken Udon and one each of the Nigiri Sushi of Tuna and Salmon. My friends had Miso Soup, Vegetable Tempura, and the Gyoza. Overall the taste of all the dishes were great. The portions were huge. Not quite enough to ask for a doggie bag but almost! The total cost of the dinner came to $64.00, which I found reasonable. I will definitely return here. It is a short walk from my friends Condo.
Overall the quality of the food was good. I found the price a bit higher, but I would go again.
Great food!! Seeing as today is the second day they have been open in the mckenzie location I was impressed. Rolls and sashimi were great:) Ambiance was good too!! Nice modern Decore too!! Highly recommend. Glad they are in the neighborhood!!
I highly recommend Haru for small groups and families- Haru has some of the best service I have ever had at a Japanese restaurant- and not because they know me by name ;). James and I are addicted to the golden California roll.. Next time we are definitely trying something off of the grill though. Here is what we had- along with some pinot grigio.
Haru is nestled in the strip mall on the McKenzie Towne side of 52 Ave. The decor is very modern & upscale, in comparison to the more traditional, homey look of nearby Ichizen. Their menu has most of the traditional sashimi and nigiri sushi staples like salmon & california rolls but I did notice some items that were not so typical. For an appie, I decided on the grilled squid, against Jesse's slight discomfort. I've never actually had grilled squid from a Jap resto before but I love the Flip (filipino) version which we dip in fish saucy mixed with lime or lemon. Haru's grilled squid came served on a hotplate with brown, teriyaki-like sauce at the bottom and a tangy mayo-like sauce on top. When cooking squid, the most important part is to avoid overcooking as it gets very chewy. This squid was perfectly cooked. The sweet & savoury brown sauce complimented the tangy sauce very well and made for a great appie. Even Jess, who's not really big on squid really liked it. For
Haru Sushi is amazing. I love the decor and the atmosphere. The place was well lit, the tables spaced out nicely, cause honestly, who wants to hear what their dining neighbors are saying. It was welcoming ambiance and I like it. But seriously, we are talking about my new found addiction to this place. The waiters are all super friendly and by the third time
We ate lots at Haru Sushi - just to get a good sample. We'll have to go back for other things such as teriyaki, or udon or things like that! I love soup noodles such as udon, so I'll be there to at least try it out some other time!
Scrumptiously Fit Food

contemporary and tranquil space due to the usage of calming colors and keeping the dining area nice and open. Great for small groups and families.
